FOX has ordered SCREAM QUEENS, a new genre-bending comedy-horror anthology series, it was announced today by Dana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group. The series, produced by 20th Century Fox Television, is from Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, Ian Brennan and Dante Di Loreto, the executive producers of Glee and “American Horror Story.”
The first installment in the new anthology series revolves around a college campus which is rocked by a series of murders.
FOX has ordered 15 one-hour episodes, which are scheduled to begin production in the spring and premiere in Fall 2015 on FOX. New settings and storylines will be featured in subsequent seasons of the anthology series.
“I knew I wanted to work with Brad and Ian again on something comedic, and we are having a blast writing SCREAM QUEENS,” commented Murphy. “We hope to create a whole new genre – comedy-horror – and the idea is for every season to revolve around two female leads. We’ve already begun a nationwide search for those women, as well as 10 other supporting roles, and we’re very grateful to Dana and Gary for their enthusiastic support.”
“One of our top priorities at the network has been to get Ryan Murphy to create a new series for FOX. We loved every element of the pitch for this show — the genre-bending concept, which blends true horror with big comedic moments; the diverse and Unforgettable characters; and reuniting the phenomenal creative team that delivered Glee,” said Walden and Newman. “SCREAM QUEENS will go straight to series. ReplyDeleteUhm.. I guess Ryan Murphy has never seen an episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, or the movie Scream.. seems he's going to be pretty stretched-thin between AHS, ACS, and now this. Kind of strange to be doing 3 anthology shows at once, they're basically all a branch off of one success, which is never a good thing. I hope AHS doesn't suffer for it.
You can go back further than that, April Fool's Day (1986). Evil Dead 2 (1987) is a more comedic version of the first Evil Dead movie. I am sure there are movies older than those as well.

ReplyDeleteSupposedly Ryan has been trying to get Lea, Darren and Chris to jump over to AHS (Lea especially)...I'm expecting them to show up here instead.
If Lea is not in this, she will be in American Crime Story.

ReplyDeleteYup, of course, the 80s and 90s and even further back were full of b-movie comedy-horror and straight-up funny horror flicks. Buffy came to mind because it's so prominently known and a TV show. Whedon did it again not long ago on the big-screen with Drew Goddard and "Cabin in The Woods".

ReplyDeleteAHS is still brilliant, one of the few shows which still manage to keep me excited. Glee is total crap and this new idea sounds plain awful. But AHS is good.
ReplyDeletePlus, Scream is also going to become a TV series at MTV. So this show is not going to be the only 'horror comedy' ;)
ReplyDeleteInitial reaction was to laugh a bit, as essentially FOX just ordered a spin-off/clone of a show airing on their cable counterpart. But... I have never been opposed to "horror" on TV... even horror on cable is never really scary, just more gory, so the writing will have to be clever to be must-see TV. It sounds like something that could be better in subsequent seasons, this sounds awfully close to "Scream" which is already getting a series...
ReplyDeleteMy major issue: Why call it "Scream Queens"? Is it going to center around a cast of girls each season, who all scream a lot? Please change the title, especially if you have serious plans for this to be an ongoing series.
Well if it's titled Scream Queens they better have Danielle Harris in it. She's the greatest horror movie screen queen of all time!

ReplyDeleteBased on Season 5 ratings Ryan/fans should be lucky Glee got any final episodes at all, any other network would have cancelled it. Maybe this was the deal that he made them a new series and they promised to let him have a episodes to end glee properly.

ReplyDeleteScream Queen is a term used in cinema for the 'leading lady' in a horror film.... i gather that each season will focus on a different 'type' of scream queen with the first being the traditional high school one.
ReplyDeleteAHS is up there as one my fav programs. The good thing is if you don't like one season storyline just wait for the next. I have a few friends who didn't like the first but loved the rest

ReplyDeleteI thought his involvement in ACS was rather minimal compared to his control over AHS? So he should only be focusing on 2, since he clearly stopped caring about Glee years ago.
