A weekly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great scenes that we've seen recently on TV.
ARROW, "Sara", October 15, 2014, Actors: Stephen Amell, David Ramsey and more, The Scenes: Oliver talks to Diggle at the end & Sara's funeral
Sylvie C: Oliver line to Diggle: I don't want to die down here. Stephen delivered that line so amazingly. It overshadowed all the other scenes from this emotional episode for me.
Daniel van der Veer: Even though I was not entirely satisfied with how Arrow handled Sara's post-death episode, the scene where she is burried is still a good scene. Seeing Sara laid to rest in the grave that was originally dug for her years earlier, was quite an emotional moment. Team Arrow and Laurel all showed their emotions in their own way.
BOARDWALK EMPIRE, "Devil You Know", October 12, 2014, Actors: Louis Cancelmi, Stephen Graham and more, The Scene: Michael D'Angelo kills Van Alden
Darth Locke: Michael D'Angelo puts a bullet in the back of Van Alden's head, killing him, as Van Alden was strangling Al Capone.
CRIMINAL MINDS, "A Thousand Suns", October 15, 2014, Actor: Matthew Gray Gubler
The Scene: Spencer Reid talks us through the plane via green screen
Laura Markus: This scene was so refreshing to see, especially with the use of the green screened plane ride. It draws callbacks to the earlier seasons of this show, which had such lovely scene with special effects. Also, when they use Reid appropriately, it's always a great scene.
DOCTOR WHO, "Flatline", October 18, 2014, Actors: Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman and more, The Scene: The Doctor's speech as he banishes the aliens
Justyna Kubica: I absolutely loved the moment when the Doctor stopped the monsters. It was not only a great speech but also the scene I've been waiting for since the beginning of the season. It was just such a Doctor thing to do! Like Nine, Ten and Eleven (and probably the others) before him, Twelve faced the aliens, introduced himself and send them away, threatening not to come back because this plane, the Earth is protected. So many great references in one single moment! Made me think of The Christmas Invasion, The Eleventh Hour and The Shakespeare Code all at once. And despite the episode being about Clara acting as the Doctor for a while, it was him who absolutely stole the episode for me in the end. And it was a brilliant hour! Peter Capaldi's performance was also fantastic and I've never felt more confident about Twelve. Because the truth is, that deep down, no matter how many things change about him, the Doctor is always the Doctor. The one we all know and care about. Already can't wait for the next episode! Kudos!
Sandi: The Doctor's speech as he banishes the Boneless. Finally in a scene reminiscent of Eleven seeing off the Atraxi, or Ten the Sycorax, Twelve gets a defining speech and Capaldi nailed it! Jamie Mathieson may be a new Who writer but he certainly gets the character and I would love for him to come back and write another episode or two in the future.
GOTHAM, "Arkham", October 13, 2014, Actors: Robin Lord Taylor and more
The Scene: Oswald Cobblepot brings the guys he hired some cannoli's
Nirat Anop: Oswald Cobblepot gives the guys he hired to raid the resturant, a present, some cannoli's. Oswald just sits there on a seat watching them eat away, his facial expression is so devilish yet with a slight innocence. Robin Lord Taylor is the perfect Penguin, especially with his suit and walk and the characteristics he adds to his performance like his cunning smile. Also picked by Sandi
HAVEN, "The Old Switcheroo (Part 2)", October 17, 2014, Actors: Emily Rose, Lucas Bryant, Eric Balfour, The Scene: Audrey comes back
Justyna Kubica: Finally! Even though it was interesting to meet Mara, I couldn't wait for Audrey to come back from the very start. And in the surprising twist, we not only get Parker back but also will continue to learn more about Mara, since there's two of them now. I really like the decision to split them. It's gonna give us a chance to see Audrey and Mara interact together and in a way, gives Audrey a fresh start and a real chance to stay. Also, a great thing about the entire scene is Nathan fighting for and showing how much he really cares about Duke. I love how things changed between them last season and how strong their friendship is now. Always happy to see these little moments with the two. Also, it's so good to have Audrey and Nathan back together. They didn't really have much of a chance before so hopefully it will be better this time. Can't wait to see what's next. Kudos to the cast and crew for their great work!
HAWAII FIVE 0, "Ka Noeʻau (The Painter)", October 17, 2014, Actors: Alex O'Loughlin and more, The Scene: Valentine reveals he had a "change of heart"
Darth Locke: Valentine reveals he had a "change of heart" and has been protecting those he has been contracted to kill.
HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER, "Let's Get to Scooping", October 16, 2014, Actors: Viola Davis, Jack Falahee and more The Scenes: The final scene & Connor seduces Paxton
Nirat Anop: Annalise removing her fake eyelashes, makeup and wig. So far Viola Davis has been a captivating presence on TV but these final moments of the episode were one of the most moving on TV ever. In my opinion, Viola Davis removing her wig to reveal her real hair is a very vulnerable and honest move, her performance shows this brilliantly. Its very rare to see a woman on TV remove such facades that hide her real identity, the identity she puts on to be accepted into an otherwise judgmental and white man's world. Viola Davis eyes had expression beyond words, we know how much she can captivate a lecture room or court room with her voice alone but without words she's a force to be reckoned with, in my opinion.
Jimmy Ryan: You cannot compete with Viola Davis on last week's How To Get Away With Murder. Her phenomenal performances already this season were all eclipsed with the final scene last week as Davis's Annalise Keating removed her fake eyelashes, wig, and makeup before directing those last 9 words at her husband. It's one of the best scenes you'll ever see on television, and takes Murder to new heights.
Klutzy girl: It was powerfully amazing to watch Annalise remove her wig and make-up and then direct those shocking words towards her husband because that truly came out of nowhere.
Daniel van der Veer: Viola Davis was outstanding in the final scene of this week's episode. Removing her wig and make-up showed her vulnerability. You could tell how deeply she felt betrayed by her husband even before she confronted him. Davis is absolutely worthy of an Emmy nomination. Also picked by Sharon Seymour and Jamie Coudeville
Francesco B: Connor seduces Paxton and they have sex in the office. Groundbreaking and daring scenes for a Broadcast Network like ABC.
JANE THE VIRGIN, "Chapter One", October 13, 2014, Actors: Gina Rodriguez, Andrea Navedo
The Scene: Xiomara thinks that Jane is like Immaculate Virgin
Francesco B: So funny!
MARVEL'S AGENTS OF SHIELD, "Face My Enemy", October 14, 2014, Actors: Ming-Na Wen, Iain De Caestecker and more, The Scenes: Fitz bonds with Lance and Mack & May and Coulson go undercover
Klutzy girl: Fitz finally opens up and bonds with Lance and Mack. He's made some huge steps and I'm happy for him. Plus, the look on Lance's face when Fitz dropped the bomb about his feelings for Jemma was hilarious.
Jamie Coudeville: May and Coulson go undercover. This episode was such great comedic relief. May's laugh had me on the floor. I need more undercover scenes.
NASHVILLE, "I Feel Sorry For Me", October 15, 2014, Actors: Hayden Panettiere, Jonathan Jackson, The Scene: Avery and Juliette's fight
Klutzy girl: This storyline is causing me a lot of pain but Jonathan and Hayden are knocking it out of the park. I'm hoping they can resolve their issues (and get back together) in time for the baby's birth but I'm enjoying the angst right now.
NCIS: LOS ANGELES, "Praesidium", October 13, 2014, Actors: Daniela Ruah, Eric Christian Olsen, The Scenes: Deeks comforts Kensi & Director Vance talks to Hetty
Justyna Kubica: Such a beautiful and moving moment. And exactly what I've been missing on the show lately. The relationship, a romantic or not, between the two has always been one of my favorite things about NCIS: LA. Daniela Ruah and Eric Christian Olsen work just so well together, like in this very scene. I like the fact that even though both Deeks and Kensi managed to move on after their traumatic experiences, they're not completely forgotten (as it often happens on the TV shows) and they're always there for each other whenever they need to be. And that they're close enough not to hide their emotions and pain. And there's even humor mixed in between. They're so much stronger together and it's something I always enjoy watching. Beautiful work by the actors and the crew. Already waiting for more of these great interactions in the future episodes. Kudos!
Tonya Papanikolas: These two have had such an up-and-down relationship since last season that it was great to finally see them get raw and real with each other. Kensi is tough so she understandably didn't want to be vulnerable. But I love that because Deeks cared so much and knew how to encourage and comfort her, she eventually let herself be vulnerable with him and let him see the pain and hurt she was feeling. It was a great shared moment between the two partners. Daniela Ruah and Eric Christian Olsen were both fantastic. And the scene had the perfect mixture of humor and raw emotion. I look forward to more moments like these between the two.
Sylvie C: Deeks comforting Kensi after her interrogation. The scene shows the intimacy of their relationship. It was very moving.
Ben Norton: Director Vance talks with Hetty about her current situation, and tells her his plan all along.
ONCE UPON A TIME, "Rocky Road", October 12, 2014, Actors: Elizabeth Mitchell, Jennifer Morrison and more, The Scenes: The Snow Queen recognizes Emma but pretends not too & Will takes Emma and Charming to the ice cream parlor
Nirat Anop: This scene was really intriguing and Elizabeth Mitchell has done an awesome job in her new role. I'm really excited to learn more about her.
Darth Locke: Will Scarlet takes Emma and Charming to the ice cream parlor and makes off with the cash.
PARENTHOOD, "A Potpourri of Freaks", October 16, 2014, Actors: Craig T. Nelson, Monica Potter, The Scene: Kristina talks to Zeek at the end
Francesco B: Kristina talks to Zeek at the end of the episode about getting better from a nearly fatal illness. This scene was truly moving: Kristina faced what Zeek is living now, and their conversation felt like a realistic and authentic moment of life.
PERSON OF INTEREST, "Brotherhood", October 14, 2014, Actors: Michael Emerson, Enrico Colantoni and more, The Scenes: Mini is revealed to be Dominic & Elias and Finch meet on the subway train
DarkUFO: Mini is revealed to be Dominic. Also picked by Ben Norton
Sharon Seymour: Elias and Finch meet on the subway train. Some great dialog.
REIGN, "Coronation", October 16, 2014, Actors: Adelaide Kane, Toby Regbo
The Scenes: The coronation & Henry and Francis talk
Sandi: Henry and Francis talk. This was a creepy and moving scene, the supernatural side of the show are my favourite parts. I wonder what will become of the nanny now, and will Henry just move on to another host if she is banished from the castle to a dungeon somewhere.
Jamie Coudeville: I thought this scene was beautifully shot. One of my favorite scenes of this show. It's such an important moment.
SCORPION, "Shorthanded", October 13, 2014, Actors: Robert Patrick, Eddie Kaye Thomas and more, The Scene: Agent Gallo and Homeland Security save Team Scorpion (picked by Ben Norton)
THE AFFAIR, "1", October 12, 2014, Actors: Dominic West and more
The Scene: Noah finds his son "hanging" in the bathroom (picked by DarkUFO)
THE FLASH, "Fastest Man Alive", October 14, 2014, Actors: Grant Gustin, Jesse L. Martin
The Scene: Barry and Joe have a heart to heart
Tonya Papanikolas: I loved this touching scene. I loved how Barry and Joe each had something important they needed to tell the other. For Joe it was letting Barry know that he believed the two of them could save Barry's father and he would help. After earlier saying the opposite, it was important that he let Barry know how much he believed in him and that he would support him now. And for Barry it was letting Joe know that he had indeed been like a father to him and he appreciated it. After how much Joe had done for him, it was a great moment that Joe needed to hear. I love that they acknowledged their mutual respect for each other in the scene - because of that, their bond grew even deeper.
THE WALKING DEAD, "No Sanctuary", October 12, 2014, Actors: Melissa McBride, Andrew Lincoln and more, The Scenes: The group's reunion & The brutal trough scene at the start
Tonya Papanikolas: Those reunions were well worth waiting for and very emotional after all they'd been through. Daryl and Carol's reunion was phenomenal. I love how they wouldn't let go. And Rick being reunited with his baby daughter really got to me. After thinking she was dead this entire time, it was such an incredible, joyful moment to see her after the misery they'd all been through. I loved that they followed the lowest of lows with such a wonderful high. It was the perfect moment for that scene and it was portrayed beautifully.
Sharon Seymour: The group finally reunite. Hugs all around.
DarkUFO: The Brutal trough scene at the start.

DarkUFO: The Brutal trough scene at the start.
Absolutely HTGAWM's final scene. Viola Davis deserves an Emmy for that! I also liked Sara's funeral even though the episode as a whole lacked something. Quentin should definitely have been told about Sara's death.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't pick a third scene just yet as I still need to catch up on some episodes from the past week.
So many great scenes this week. So here's some of my honorable mentions:
ReplyDeleteArrow - Sara's funeral
How to get away with murder - The final scene
Marvel's Agents of SHIELD - May and Coulson undercover (and all their other scenes, really) & Fitz bonds with Lance and Mack
Person Of Interest - The reveal at the end - Even though I guessed it pretty early it was really well done
The Flash - Barry and Joe have a heart to heart
The Vampire Diairies - Bonnie and Damon scenes - Still watch the show because of these two.
The Walking Dead - Carol and Daryl reunite, Rick holds Judith and she gives him a "WTF are you?" look.
ReplyDeleteNCIS LA- Kensi and Deeks. They were great in this episode. He loves her, he knows her. Their hug was so sweet.
Supernatural - Dean in the back of the Impala explaining his version of mercy to Sam.
Agents of Shield - All things May and Coulson. May vs May.
The Flash- All things Barry and Joe.
Sleepy Hollow - I think I love any scene where Hawley is watching Ichabod with a confused look on his face. "Ok, Pride and Prejudice."
Abbie saves Ichabod from the Piper
The 100 is just a few days away! Expect it to sweep the scenes of the week polls, it's going to be that good!
ReplyDeleteHonorable mentions:
ReplyDeleteSHIELD - undercover Philinda
Haven - Audrey returns
The Walking Dead - Carol and Daryl's reunion
I keep reading how great the first episodes are and the anticipation is killing me! I'm doing an all day marathon on Wednesday until the premiere. So excited.
ReplyDeleteTVD bonnie getting her powers back and saving damon
ReplyDeleteThe Snow Queen recognising Emma! so intrigued!
ReplyDeleteI'm almost sure she was one of Emma's foster mothers
Voted for:
ReplyDeleteOnce Upon a Time: The Snow Queen recognises Emma but pretends not too.
- Elizabeth's acting is just fantastic, I haven't liked her at all in any other role but I adore her in OUAT!
Once Upon a Time: Will takes Emma & Charming to the ice cream parlour.
- I loved Will in OUATIW and I'm so happy he's in the show now, I loved that line he said to Charming when he was picking the lock!
How to Get Away with Murder: Connor seduces Paxton.
- I absolutely love Connor's character! The final scene was good but I really don't understand the big deal about it?
Honourable mentions:
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D: Pretty much all of Fitz's scenes.
Scorpion: Ummm...the entire episode! I love this show so much!
Once Upon a Time: Elsa & Kristoff bonding and becoming friends
On another note, The 100 is back on Wednesday! :) So excited, If last season is any indication I expect to be listing several scenes from it each week on here!
My favourite scenes this week:
ReplyDelete- How to get Away with Murder: Annalise's final scene (obviously!) and Connor having a panic attack. Connor seducing Paxton was also very well done, but his panic attack was such a game changer for his character.
- Reign: the coronation, such a stunning scene. Perfect.
- Agents of SHIELD: loved the whole episodes, especially the May / Fake-May fight.
- Glue: James' acid "trip" in the woods. I had a feeling he and Cal were in a relationship, this was such a great way to reveal it.
- Sleepy Hollow: love every time Ichabod and Hawley interact. But nothing beat "and I watched the finale of Glee" last week!!
- The Originals: Kol in flashbacks. And Kol being played by Daniel Sharman. Enough said.
The suspense is actually killing me! Not just for the episode but for it's ratings as well, i'm kinda nervous about it :P
ReplyDeleteThe Walking Dead - Carol shooting at a tanker, causing a massive explosion and helping the group out of Terminus.
ReplyDeleteCarol has evolved so much since the first season and now she is a certified badass! She has come a long way and I'm so damn proud of her. Also, her reunion with the group was such an emotional scene.
The Flash - Barry and Joe have a heart to heart.
It was nice to see that Barry finally accepted Joe as a father figure. He needed to hear that and it was so sweet.
Agents of SHIELD - May vs. Fake May fight/Fitz saves the day.
That fight had to have been the best action sequence SHIELD has ever done (and there have been a lot!). It was so well done and Ming-Na must have been having a blast shooting that scene. Also, Fitz having an opportunity to save the team from an explosion was so great. He is making progress little by little and I love it.
Arrow - Sara's funeral.
The entire episode was a perfect tribute to Sara Lance. Seeing Team Arrow's reaction to her death and her funeral was definitely emotional. Can't wait to see everyone avenging her death by finding her killer. Should be awesome!
How to Get Away with Murder - The final scene.
They have been hyping up the final scene for a week and they did not disappoint! Annalise taking off her makeup and wig, showing her true self and indicating that she is going to mean business was absolutely mesmerizing. Once again, Viola Davis is one of a kind.
You should be excited! It's just that great!
ReplyDeleteTop 3 scenes for me this week:
ReplyDeleteHTGAWM - Viola Davis just annihilated everyone else with her performance. No one can come near her. That last scene from the moment Wes shows her the phone to removing her make up and confronting her husband. I can see emmy nominations next year.
Arrow - SA may not get any emmys but that scene where Oliver says "I don't want to die down here" was so powerful and devastating. At the very same time its a milestone for Oliver and hope for the future. All congrats to SA for this scene.
The Flash - The scene where Barry acknowledges Joe as his dad was wonderful. For a show that is so light it has some poignant moments this episode. Jesse L. Martin was exceptional in that scene.
Those two incredible scenes The Walking Dead, but especially the reunion. That was the moment we were waiting for most of last season. Awesome episode with many great scenes. And I chose another--this one from The Big Bang Theory: Penny in the audience of a male strip club with her I pad, studying. I'm reminding that Penny always had smarts, and we're about to see her use them. Bye bye dumb Penny.
ReplyDeleteThis episode of HTGAWM was fantastic, but Connor is what really stood out for me in this episode - his mental breakdown in the flashbacks - along with Viola Davis' last scene were the highlights of the episode. Those two are the main reason I watch this show, and it keeps getting better every week.

ReplyDeleteOh, and every scene from How to Get Away With Murder. Twice. Every scene was incredible.
I voted for Deeks and kensi. You have to understand what the couple has been through over the last year to understand just how amazing that scene was. Its been a tough year for them.
ReplyDeleteTV was insane this week!!!!! :D Thanks as always, Justyna!
ReplyDeleteYeah, Reid with the green screen was such a good scene, guys! :D

Revenge: David tries to kill Emily and recognizes her
Vampire Diaries: Bonnie gets her powers back.
OUAT:: Emma confronting Ice Queen
Arrow.- Definitely Oliver talking to Diggle at the end, and that line was so powerful and so sad. Stephen did a great job. I seriously just wanted to give Oliver a hug. And also voted Sara's funeral, I too thought it was very nice that she was actually buried in a coffin, rather than drowned at sea, like originally thought. AND to me, Sara's funeral WAS a proper funeral. As an assassin that's probably the best thing that happened for her. Being surrounded by her loved ones paying their respects, and tossing dirt as a custom, while saying goodbye. I was glad Diggle named the baby Sara too.
ReplyDeleteFlash Barry and Joe had a heart to heart, absolutely loved that scene.
We all are
ReplyDeleteHow is it groundbreaking or daring for ABC to air a sex scene during How To Get Away With Murder? This is the same network that use to air NYPD Blue for Christ sakes! It was probably tame compared to what aired on NYPD Blue.
ReplyDeleteMy top three:
ReplyDeletePOI – Finch and Elias meet on the subway
HTGAWM – final scene (!)
MAOS – May and Coulson undercover (+ May’s laugh XD)
