Mindblowing.
That's the only word that seems to do last night's episode of Scandal justice.
This was simply stunning television. There's no doubt about it. It doesn't get any better. Written by Mark Fish and directed by Paul McCrane, "Like Father, Like Daughter" ranks as one of Scandal's best ever episodes, and makes it onto my personal list of best ever television episodes, comprising of around 60 total episodes from the thousands of hours of television I've watched,. In my opinion it also easily slides atop the list as the season's best episode.
The beautiful thing about this episode was that none of the featured storylines felt like they were superseded by another. Karen's crisis at the party, the reunion with her father, Mellie's mother to daughter moment, all felt perfectly balanced with the progression we saw in the investigation into the first family's son's death. You also had Mellie and Fitz face off in one of the series' most memorable scenes. And so much more.
The long awaited reintroduction of series leads Olivia and Fitz finally occurred too, with Karen Grant dialing Olivia to get her out of a messy situation. This was beautifully executed throughout the episode, with the chemistry between the pair feeling a lot hotter than previously. Tony Goldwyn showed his class throughout the episode, and really shone in his scenes with Kerry Washington, who delivered her best performance of the season.
Jake Ballard saw significant screentime last night, starting the episode off with a bang thanks to a failed attempt at a car bomb. In the best final 5 minutes of an episode of Scandal yet, Ballard was singled out by under duress secret service agent Tom Larsen as the one who ordered Larsen to kill Jerry Grant. In their reunion, Olivia revealed to Fitz that she hadn't been alone. Without knowing it, Olivia has done the next closest thing to sealing the fate of her second lover, giving Fitz more than enough reason to be biased and tunnel visioned in his quest, led by Rowan under his orders, to find his son's killer.
Joe Morton proved his worthiness of his recent Emmy award, doing what he does best - delivering powerful dialog in defining moments of the series. Equally deserving of praise is Brian Letscher, who plays Larsen, and absolutely nailed it in the interrogation box. I for one almost began praying for Fitz to walk into the interrogation box and rescue him. How much more we will see of Larsen is unclear, but I'm putting my money on Olivia having something to do with his possible fight to clear his name and out her father as the mastermind.
It remains to be seen whether Ballard's repossession of his B613 files from David Rosen will impact his chances against Rowan. Rosen has been relatively stagnant thus far in season 4, so if he's been smart and backed up the flash drive he handed over, his actions over the next couple of weeks will impact a significant amount of characters. Though Olivia will try to work her magic, as we see in next week's episode promo, it's Rosen who has the house of cards resting on his shoulders.
Bellamy Young put on another great show as Mellie Grant, and guest star Mary Mouser as Karen Grant opened her account on the series in good fashion. I'm hoping the mother-daughter talk between the pair will finally help right the boat for Mellie and help her snap out of her trance, which has gone on long enough for me.
Before I wrap, the other lead characters, Cyrus, Quinn, Huck and Abby deserve a mention. I'm pleased Cyrus's arc was halted somewhat to free up airtime for the meaty stuff. Cyrus putting Abby in her place was strangely satisfying, as was seeing Quinn and Huck on better terms. At this point, a more appropriate OPA reunion between the former trio looks some way off, and hedges on Abby's job security which could take a hammering very shortly. We will just have to wait and see.
Thanks as usual for readingmy review for one of Scandal's best ever episodes. I'd love to hear your thoughts and theories in the comments below. Don't forget to track Scandal's ratings on my TV ratings website, www.seriesmonitor.com/scandal.

I agree with you. This is the best episode of the season so far, and one of the best episodes in the overall series. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. The dialogue about the sex tape was so raw and realistic. The scene where Fitz learns about Olivia going away with Jake was excellent. Poor Jake, I'm seriously fearing for him.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment! Yes this episode kept my attention right throughout. If an episode does that then it's pretty darn good. I think it's safe to say Jake is the focus for the next fortnight at least
ReplyDeleteYes clearly the best episode of the Season. Well, I want to say because the focus was back on Olivia and Fitz. Whether people want to admit it or not, these two leads and the Scandal that surrounds their relationship makes for great drama and television. I really hope they make it together one day and Fitz get his Presidential divorce and Liv realize that she shouldn't have to pretend to be happy with jake if she isn't and go after what her hearts really wants, Fitz.
ReplyDeleteYes, it did seem Olivia and Fitz were hotter than ever. Maybe it was the distance, but I will say Kerry and Tony chemistry so palatable and sexy. What Jake brags about, with one touch Fitz had Liv mind, body, and soul. They are magnetic.
I really don't like Jake or Rowan, so I'm hoping for a Reservoir Dog situation where they both shoot each other at the same time and dies. Two birds...one stone...kill em both! Rowan really is playing his daughter like a fiddle and plus he killed a child. He's terrible.
Yeah, love it or hate it, it's Fitz and Olivia that make the series what it is, so without their relationship of any sort, the thing just wouldn't work.
ReplyDeleteKilling Jake or Rowan would be a big call, but I'm getting the feeling one of them will be 6 feet under soon. Killing them both wouldn't be the greatest option in terms of storytelling. I'm just waiting for Jake to join Maya Pope in the B613 bunker. That would be epic
I'm fearing for Jake. Scott Foley is developing a new comedy with Shonda Rhimes called "To Max and Paige", he's the script-writer and co-producer with Shonda. I hope he can multitask.
ReplyDeleteThis was one of the best eposides. I am surprised google search did not go down after they metioned the Efiel Tower position. LOL My twitter feed went crazy. I sure hope Millie is back in the game even though I loved Smelly Millie. And when Fritz grabbed Olivia I thought my tv was going to melt.
ReplyDeleteTony Goldwyn and Kerry Washington were steaming hot. Just the way they look at each other and that kiss was quite enjoyable for me. I agree, it was like watching more than one show. Great acting by Brian Belscher.
ReplyDeleteEven though I love him, before Rowan dies, because he will, he can't keep on doing these stuffs; I hope he takes Fitz and Jake 6 feet under. I can't stand these two buffoons. I miss Sally so much. But great review and great episode.
ReplyDeleteSome questions though. Wasn't Mama Pope the one Fitz thought killed Jerry? So, they'll need to explain what's going on here.
ReplyDeleteI think the hand papa Pope gives to Larsen in the interogation´s room will be his destruction. because every saine person should be asking why give a comforting sign to a killer, unless you are hidding something
ReplyDeleteGREAT episode. When those parents tried to extort more money out of the Grants, I was like 'Hurt them Olivia.' And that she did. The way she ERADICATED those horrible parents made me hop up and down for joy. That is the Olivia Pope we haven't really seen since Season 3. The Lady Hell and High Water.
ReplyDeleteAs for Jake, it sucks but he really screwed himself. If he had quietly built a case file like a competent spy would have, came to David as an ally instead of threatening him, NOT bragged to Rowan about what he knew and just went to Fitz on the DL with all his evidence, this wouldn't have happened. SO, it kinda serves him right.
Agreed on Olivia's scene with those parents, that was awesome to watch. So well played by Olivia
ReplyDeleteWell Jake worked for Rowan for 22 years so do you really think he didn't know what he was doing? I'm guessing Jake is after something else that he could only get by pushing Rowan as hard as he could.
ReplyDeleteoh I love Jake. I guess the entire story arc works best on an emotional level when you can't remember or connect previous episodes with the most current
ReplyDeleteYes Rowan told Fitz it was Mama Pope who killed little Jerry. Harrison figured that out and confronted Papa Pope who had Tom kill him. In S3, Rowan told fitz he killed Mama pope as he requested. In the S4 opener, he tells Liv that he killed her mother. But when Jake interrogated Charlie, I'm pretty Charlie told him Mama Pope was still alive.
ReplyDeleteYes Jake suck and he's not very smart. Rowan is a mastermind.
