"If I was the Sun way up there
I'd go with love most everywhere
I'll be the moon when the sun goes down
Just to let you know that I'm still around."
- "That's How Strong My Love Is" - Otis Redding
Last week on Resurrection we learned a little more about the mysterious matriarch of the Langston family and her even more cryptic past as a young girl. The twelve men that we were told died in a truck accident actually died from a fire in the Langston family factory. The truck story was a cover up to save their family from being held responsible. We learned that the 'returned' have been around since the 1930's and back then the community was not very kind to them and considered them, as Margaret so eloquently put it, demons. It was revealed, by the end of the episode, that she was part of the lynch mob that chased down the 'returned' boy with a broken leg each time he came back until they discovered that burning him prevented them from returning again. This would explain the dreams some of the 'returned' would have of smelling smoke and seeing fire as some of them have a sort of connection to each other.
The big mystery the past few episodes is the virus that has been plaguing only the 'returned'. I think it is interesting that with current events being what they are and the Ebola virus giving the entire globe a scare that we have episodes like this. We are not sure yet as to why the virus only affects the 'returned', or if it has anything to do with them disappearing or not, but one thing for sure is the government lady that Marty is working for is not helping out at all. Her character is starting to get on my nerves as no one is exactly sure what her role is at all.
Barbara responds to all of this by giving her view of the "why". She believes it to be a 'second chance' by the powers that be; a chance to start over and try again. That formula would explain a little better the situation of the 'returned'. Still, however you view it, the scene was powerful especially as it was mixed with scenes of Carl's brother, Mikey, and his struggle with the virus.
The scene between Margaret and Barbara also revealed some other clues that could explain the 'returned' in Arcadia and the mechanics of their disappearances. It mirrored the scene between Marty and Caleb last season right before Caleb disappeared and Marty told him that no one wants anything to do with him. Caleb needed the 'will' to let go just like Barbara and Mikey did this episode. Both, Barbara and Mikey, at the same time repeat the same phrase, "I don't think I can do this anymore" immediately before they disappear. They had the 'will' to leave this plane of existence and they took it.
The episode ends with us not knowing the fates of some of the infected characters. Rachael has a great story line right now that I have been looking forward to this season and I hope they figure out how to treat the virus so we can see how that turns out. We were also left with Marty looking very sick and moving out of Maggie's apartment to "look for answers" (we all are, Marty). What started out as a promising season with Resurrection is slowing turning into a long drawn out story with some much needed answers if the creators want to keep fans interested. The acting from the major characters has been great the past few episodes especially with the addition of Michelle Fairley. I just hope that we start learning more about what is going on before to many of the 'returned' disappear for good.
Thoughts and Discussion
- That was a little creepy when Margaret came home and Jacob was just sitting at the top of the stairs, Lol.
- Did you notice...When Carl's brother disappeared his blood went with him too. The same is revealed of Barbara's blood when Maggie goes into the fridge to find the vials.
- I still not sure that Margaret is completely correct about the reason for the 'returned' coming back. I just don't think it because they are being punished for their sins. I would love to know what all of you think.
- It is mentioned by Margaret, a few times throughout last night's episode as well as last week's, that there are several ways for the 'returned' to not come back. Last week she mentions that if they burn a 'returned' they will not come back. This week it is revealed that it is there 'will' that affects their returning. I would like to believe that it is their 'will' and only their 'will' that affects if a 'returned' will come back or not. It would explain Caleb disappearing from the prison cell last season. It would also explain the boy with the broken leg from the thirties. Every time he came back the lynch mob would kill him. Maybe it wasn't them burning him that finally prevented him from returning, but the fact that he lost the 'will' to return?
- I recall one commenter saying that they read Caleb is not coming back for a surprise visit, which is a shame. Does this mean that any of the disappeared 'returned' will not be coming back? I was just getting to like Barbara's character.
- One thing I am also wondering is if Margaret 'returned' long before she showed up on the series. She obviously knows a lot about the 'returned' and I'm certain she gave the same speech to Arthur Holmes that she gave to Barbara in Maggie's clinic before he disappeared. "You just have to let go".
- Why hasn't Marty figured out that his parents are in Arcadia? He must know the Thompson's are his parents, right? Or someone like Jacob must know.
