Ratings Breakdown:
CBS scored another Wednesday overnight household victory. And ABC’s two-hour sitcom block is looking particularly solid. But also worthy of bragging rights is NBC. Anchored by surprise older-skewing hit “The Mysteries of Laura,” NBC built by 32 percent in the overnights year-to-year.
“The Mysteries of Laura” opened with a 6.0 rating/10 share in households from 8-9 p.m., which inched past competing “Survivor” on CBS (5.9/10) by one-tenth of a rating point (or two percent). “Survivor,” which was on par from one year earlier, will lead the hour in the key young adult demos, of course. But compared to former time period occupant “Revolution” on the year-ago evening (3.6/ 6 on 10/09/13), “The Mysteries of Laura” increased by 67 percent. And it continues to give a boost to lead-out “Law & Order: SVU” (#3: 5.3/ 8 at 9 p.m.), which increased by 21 percent from the 4.3/ 7 on the year-ago evening. Not bad for a series in season No. 16!
Sophomore “Chicago PD” capped off the night for NBC with a second-place 4.6/ 8 in the overnights at 10 p.m., which increased from the failed revival of year-ago occupant “Ironside” (3.9/ 7 on 10/09/13) by 18 percent. Last week, “Chicago PD” scored a 4.3/ 7 (out of a 5.3/ 8 for “SVU”). In an environment where youth is the main ingredient, NBC’s 50+-targeted combination of “The Mysteries of Laura,” “Law & Order: SVU” and “Chicago PD” still has value.
In season-premiere news, “Arrow” opened season three on The CW with a 2.0/ 3 in the overnights at 8 p.m., which was one-tenth of a rating point (or five percent) below the 2.1/ 3 for its season-opener on the year-ago evening. One night earlier, spin-off “The Flash” launched with a 3.4/ 5. And “Arrow” led into an encore of that pilot episode of “The Flash” at a 1.6/ 3 at 9 p.m. (#5). Comic-Con, which begins today in New York City, should be buzzing with talk about these two CW dramas. Note to The CW: you have found a solid niche!
In episode two news, CBS drama “Stalker” scored a dominant 5.1/ 9 at 10 p.m., which was a typical 15 percent below its 6.0/10 debut one week earlier. And that 6.1 in the overnights translated into 9.05 million viewers and a 2.0 rating/6 share among adults 18-49, based on the fast nationals. Comparably, retention for “Stalker” out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “Criminal Minds” (6.6/11) was an acceptable 77 percent. In other words, dominant “Stalker” is respectable but by no means a breakout hit.
“Criminal Minds,” now featuring Jennifer Love Hewitt, led the 9 p.m. hour overall in the overnights with a 6.7/11, which was 11 percent below its season-premiere one week earlier (7.5/12 on Oct. 1) and seven percent below the 7.2/12 on the year-ago evening. Regardless, “Criminal Minds” remains a solid midweek performer for crime-drenched CBS.
Over at ABC, relocated sitcom “The Goldbergs” (#3: 4.7/ 8 at 8:30 p.m.) remains a solid fit out of lead-in “The Middle” (#3: 5.2/ 9 at 8 p.m.) with overnight retention of 90 percent. Last week, a 4.9/ 8 in the overnights for sophomore “The Goldbergs” out of a 5.2/ 9 for five-year old “The Middle” translated into a 2.3/ 8 in adults 18-49 for “The Goldbergs” and a 2.0/ 7 for “The Middle (based on the Live + Same Day data). In other words, you can totally anticipate a long run for “The Goldbergs.” Note to the Emmy voters: keep an eye (or two) on “Goldbergs” Mama Wendi McLendon-Covey.
In week three news, sitcom “Black-ish” on ABC (#2: 5.7/ 9 at 9:30 p.m.) remains the best fit, to-date, out of “Modern Family” (#1: 7.1/11) with overnight retention of 80 percent. Failed “Super Fun Night” on the year-ago evening (4.7/ 8 on 10/09/13) held only 62 percent of the 7.6/12 from “Modern Family.” Expect a back-nine episode order for “Black-ish” at any moment. Three-week overnight track for “Black-ish”: 7.6/12 – 6.1/10 – 5.7/ 9.
Closing the night for the alphabet net was quiet drama “Nashville” at a third-place 4.0/ 7 in the overnights at 10 p.m., which at a 3.9/ 7 in the overnights last week translated into 5.34 million viewers and a 1.6/ 5 among adults 18-49.
Fox, unfortunately, is suffering another evening of hefty losses with the pairing of “Hell’s Kitchen” (#4: 3.1/ 5 at 8 p.m.) and week four of “Red Band Society” (#4: series low 2.3/ 4 at 9 p.m.) down by an average of 49 percent in the household overnights from two-hours of “The X Factor” on the year-ago evening (5.3/ 9 on 10/09/13). Note to Simon Cowell…stop smirking!

If you’re interested in Ratings/Renewals/Cancellations then we have a number of resources here at SpoilerTV that we recommend you check out.
Arrow did 1.2 and the repeat of The Flash 0.8???? What a great week for CW!!!
ReplyDeleteThose are just the Top 25 Markets so far. We don't have the full 18-49/Total Viewers for all markets yet. We won't have those for another 90 minutes.
ReplyDeleteI really hope Arrow doesn't fall much from the top25.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, amazing addition with the regular posting of the top25 markets, makes it so much better and provide so much more of a reliable indicator than the overnights!
ABC: I see this line up staying put unless Black-ish crashes or TM is moved next season. It's finally working. Nashville might be moved, but what might replace it?
ReplyDeleteNBC: Unless the entire line up is shifted to Thursdays, which would happen if/when NBC blinks and doesn't move TB there, I see this largely staying put, especially if, overall, TMOL is doing a 1.5 or better. I happen to think NBC is wasting prime real estate here, to a large degree, but whatever. Maybe, since they have so many sitcoms on deck, 8:00 will be given over to them towards the end of the season.
CBS: I see Stalker biting the dust early if it doesn't hold up. CBS has too few slots open, it has been critically reviled, and I'm not sure it can last for the long haul. Maybe it'd be a good idea to move CM to 10;00 and use a still-strong Survivor to launch a new show, or maybe even a pair of comedies.
FOX: I can see RBS lasting until the spring. It is well reviewed, and Fox has so many holes to fill, they might give it time to grow. Besides, it probably does pretty well with the 18-34 demo. Maybe not next season, but we are a long way off until that point.
Thank you!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the top 25 :) Are they going to be posted with the article from now on? It's really nice to have them.
ReplyDeleteWednesday ratings are pretty boring for me until The 100 starts, I dropped Arrow & Stalker and RBS is clearly headed for cancellation :( AHS will do well too.
Well done Arrow! It rose from the final and was close to it's year ago premier.
ReplyDeleteLooking good for Arrow so far!
ReplyDeleteRed Band Society doesn't do well in A18-34 at all.

Stalker will likely be replaced by CSI: Cyber by January.
ReplyDeleteGreat for Arrow.
ReplyDeleteWhat are the top 25 markets?
ReplyDeleteCyber is scheduled for Sundays. And Stalker is a 13 ep season.
ReplyDeleteLet's just hope that Arrow's ratings look like that in finals. The Flash fell ~12% from the top25 market yesterday. A drop like that would put Arrow squarely in the middle of 1 and 1.1. It would still be good but I much prefer the 1.2
ReplyDeleteDo shows always drop a lot from the top 25?
ReplyDeleteBlackish's episode last night was really excellent and so was The Goldbergs. Also, I loved Arrow last night.
ReplyDeleteHmm, I thought I remember reading it did. Maybe it was with females in that group or something.
ReplyDeleteYou are right however wouldn't be surprised if it changed to actually give it a halfway decent chance to survive. They also have Battle Creek.
ReplyDeleteSome increase, some stay the same. You just never know.
ReplyDeleteWe'll do out best to post them when we have them. All depends if Ed can get them sent to us when they are not busy.
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure.
ReplyDeleteRed Band Society has died of a terminal illness.
ReplyDeleteGreat for Arrow
ReplyDeleteThey are in the main post.
ReplyDeleteokay! I think I get it now. With all this top 25 stuff etc. Think/Hope it will be most likely 1.1 or 1.2 :-)
ReplyDeleteStalker is not planned to be 13 episodes a season, where did you heard that? Like most new series, its original order is 13 episodes, but with the option of a back-9 if it does well.
ReplyDeleteI probably should have explained that better, I mean what are they and how are they different from the actual ratings that come in?
ReplyDeleteI am no expert at all but my impression is that the young skewing networks (ABC, FOX, CW) tend to go down while old skewing networks (CBS, NBC) tend to go upwards. But this not scientific by any means, just by impression.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I read an interview with K. Williams I believe, that it only be 13 eps long. But maybe I'm mistaken.
ReplyDeleteMaybe then. Modern I don't have the W18-34 breakdown for this season yet. keep in mind however that MF is huge in the already scarce A18-34 demo group so gathering a lot of interest in that demo going directly against it will always be challenging.
ReplyDeleteThey are the largest 25 TV markets in the US. They would include cities like New York, Chicago, LA, Philadelphia as oppose to a market like Fargo, ND
ReplyDeleteBlack-ish is get better and better, I still have to catch The Goldbergs, I even watched yet.
ReplyDeleteOh sorry, I didn't get it. The poster below has already explained it in the meantime.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know why Marc is championing older skewing shows and DVR ratings this year?
ReplyDeleteDear Fox:
ReplyDeleteI need to hide 50 pounds of contraband. Could you possibly put it on your prime time schedule?
The Goldbergs is really better than season 1.
ReplyDeleteIndeed they are!
ReplyDeleteDespite having aired mostly repeats for the first two weeks of the season, since the official start of the season, the CW is already up 2% year to year. That may not seem much but ABC is down 1%, CBS is down 4%, NBC is down 14% and FOX is down 25%, so being up, even for a bit, is a big achievement.
Another way to look at it is that on Monday and Tuesday from this week alone, the CW is up an hefty 52% year to year, which is mind blowing.
(Note: Sports excluded from all numbers mentioned)
He has always cheered for older skewing shows. He did the same for Harry's Law back in the day and we all know how that turned out.
ReplyDeleteI really doubt it. Maybe I've missed it but I usually keep good track of those things and I also haven't seen anything else discuss it in any of the other ratings website I usually go to. It's also a pure CBS procedural so I don't see the reason for it to be capped at 13 episodes. The only show CBS has done that with was Hostages and that was not a procedural.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree with you. Any improvement is important for any network. And all the big ones are down like you said; so it's good to finally see good news for CW.
ReplyDeleteIt's great to see the CW doing well. Last year there up from the previous season and it seems this year it will be the same.
ReplyDeleteFox's drop is bigger than I expected.
Cool, thank you :)
ReplyDeleteThey will have a problem on Thursdays though. Reign really came back much weaker than it should have. It's sad because I've really grown to love the show despite my initial prejudice against it. But it will bring their numbers down considerably. As will Jane IMO.
ReplyDeleteFox is down 25%?! WOW!
ReplyDeleteFox is really disappointing since last year. I really don't understand what is happening to it. But all the shows are dropping in a large way. They already have to be alert and start to do sometinhg to change all of this.
ReplyDeleteI hope that number for Arrow stays. It would be great if The 100 would do in two weeks what tht Flash repeat does now.
ReplyDeleteStalker expectedly dipped. I hope it holds in the demo.
They are spiraling out of control right now.
ReplyDeleteI agree
ReplyDeleteThe 100 deserves to do even higher in my opinion. I wish it could be that transcendent show that does not only great for the cw, but great in general. Like The Flash is doing. It deserves it.
ReplyDeleteWow, the CW is on a roll so far this week. So damn happy for them and Arrow :)
ReplyDeleteAs for Reign, I hope it manages to stay at 0.5's and also if Jane the Virgin is over a 0.4 in A18-49, this is good for The CW, because that would be improvement of last season's 0.3's.
ReplyDeleteAnd that's largely because of Sundays (the first one anyway that had the huge crossover episode) and Mondays. If you look at the other days, it goes like this:
ReplyDelete- Tuesday: -37%
- Wednesday: -51%
- Thursday: -36%
- Friday: -45%
Mondays are down 8% but that's only because of premiere Monday which was up 3%. The last two Mondays have been -14%. As for Sundays, it went +59% on premiere Sunday which was certainly amazing but -39% the second one.
The Flash and The Originals (and Whose Line to a smaller degree) will probably be enough to ensure so but they will be handicapped by a hard dropping TVD and by Reign & Jane.
ReplyDeleteIt's always hard to be sure without more information. I just think that, for Fox especially, given its issues, I think we might see more patience. Sunday nights are okay, and Mondays are doing reasonably well, but it's horrible on all other nights. it simply needs new programming, and if RBS skews young in any way, I see it sticking around. Maybe it gets 18 episodes total for this season or even 16 and then they try to relaunch it next fall.
ReplyDeleteIf NBC is only down 14 percent without SNF, it will have to finish number one again, especially with the Superbowl. Unless it collapses later in the season, that is. I think it has to hope at least two of its scripted shows catch on, especially one of the comedies.
ReplyDeleteArrow did well. The CW is having a great week, and I hope it continues. Mondays, Tuesdays are up, Wednesdays seems also to be up, or steady from last season. Thursdays is down, and needs some fixing, and Fridays are steady.
ReplyDeleteIt's roughly the same thing that happens to other networks on the way down. It is fighting for viewers on a number of fronts, and its programming is older and its newer stuff isn't catching the attention of audiences. It wouldn't be so bad the network could count on Idol to give the scripted programming a boost, but even that is hard to expect now.
ReplyDeleteOh I wasn't even going against your main point about Red Band, just commenting on your idea about the A18-34 numbers.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Red Band has any shot of renewal unless its numbers improve. But I also don't think it will get pulled. I think it will be 13 and out. Idol takes over at midseason, probably combined with Empire.
I expect a number of shifts by CBS - the new schedule is just not working as well as they'd hoped. Stalker is not nearly as strong as CSI, MS not better than TAR, POI and LA not doing well. All these shifts did not produce the results. When TBBT shifts back to Thursday, Scorpion will sink will TM(!) as a lead-in.
ReplyDeleteI think part of the struggle is bringing any eyes to the network. TMOL, despite skewing older, is doing that, and it's helping NBC on the entire night. They might not be as valuable, to say the least, as younger viewers, but they do bring something to the table...older viewers, that is.
ReplyDeleteAlso, maybe there's some hidden demographic strength that we don't know about.
ABC: I agree that they will probably keep all of the comedies in place next season. NASHVILLE will probably be moved and replaced with an all new drama. Honestly the Wednesday 10pm hour is wide open since both NBC and CBS have 2 low rates procedural there.
ReplyDeleteNBC: The old-skewing procedural lineup probably would do better on Thursdays than anything else NBC has placed on the night, but at this point I think Wednesday's are going to stay in tact for NBC this season. But I don't think TMoL is going to be renewed. Next year I think we'll see a Wolf night featuring SVU, Chicago Fire, and PD on Wednesdays.
CBS: I agree that Stalker probably won't see a season 2. I don't know if moving CM to 10pm is the answer because the show still gets great demos and should be a great lead in to another crime drama. Stalker's problem was probably the negative critical reception.
FOX: RBS is going to be replaced by IDOL and FOX's whole Spring lineup wil probably look a lot different. Sadly it looks like they shouldnt have gitten rid of X-Factor because it was doing much better than all of their new scripted shows.
I forgot how much programming we have for the middle of the season. Does it seem like a lot this year, at least compared to previous years?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I could see Fox being patient with the show, especially since shows like SH and Gotham are set to have shorter seasons, along with shows like TF, which can't go on forever, and since shows like Wayward Pines are probably meant to have shorter life spans, if they aren't considered event series like Gracepoint.
The Mysteries of Laura is a winner??? Now THAT's a shocker.
ReplyDeleteI think they got too confident about American Idol and The x factor and never thought what could happen if these shows failed. Now they have more hours to fill and except for the animated shows, Gotham and Sleepy Hollow nobody cares about the other shows.
ReplyDeleteProbably because of the viewers. Marc loves old skewing shows.
ReplyDeleteNBC's numbers are somehow misleading, for a few reasons:
ReplyDelete- They've been airing the voice 4 hours a week and they will soon replace one of those hours by a much lower rated hour of comedies
- Their average usually goes down very significantly in the Spring when they start programming Sundays
- They will have a clear low point of the calendar which is January and February in which they have no voice for its usual three hours and no boost for its lead-out shows
- The Voice is done with the highest rated portion of its season (blind auditions). I realize I mention the voice a lot but it accounts for such a large portion of NBC's schedule and numbers that it makes a lot of difference.
All these three points can be summarized by saying that NBC's seasonal numbers are frontloaded in the fall, as in, they tend to decline throughout the season.
- Finally, and most importantly, their weeks are also frontloaded (meaning that Mondays and Tuesdays are their best day). This skews the comparisons in their favor and against ABC, for which those are the weakest days. If you look at week 1 and 2 only: ABC was up 1 % in week 1 and 1% in week 2 whereas NBC was down 15% in week 1 and 11% in week 2. So if we do this on Sunday, chances are that ABC will be looking healthier again and NBC looking worse.
On the topic of ABC, one should also bear in mind that their week 1 and 2 numbers look favorable and that is in spite of some stuff they had skewing the numbers from premiere week last season such as: the highly rated Shield opening which was bound to be a one time only thing, double Modern Family episode and three Castle episodes instead of one.
NBC: I can easily see TMOL getting renewed. Of course, I reserve the right to change that opinion as the season goes on, but NBC needs new hour long shows. Also, why move CF? It seems to be growing on Tuesdays. My biggest issue with these shows, aside from seeming kind of bland, is that they take up prime real estate. Even with NBC's current Friday programming doing kind of well, I could see the value in shifting everything there. I think TMOL would kill it there. But even more than that, SVU can't go on forever. Why not wrap it up next season?
ReplyDeleteCBS: I have to wonder, though, if Survivor wouldn't be better used on trying to establish another younger skewing show. Maybe a comedy block would do well there.
Fox: Will Idol be 2 hours on Wednesday?
NBC has the Bible sequel AD this spring and that should stabilize Sunday's for them. Also they will have a more competent Thursday lineup this season as well. So by the end of the season the year to year numbers (excluding the super bowl) should be up even with the Voice's decline.
ReplyDeleteABC needs to be taking advantage of MF lead-in while they can and launch new comedies every year they still have it. Keep 8-9:30 the same for now.
ReplyDeleteAnd the final season of The Mentalist, but that's obviously a lower priority.
ReplyDeleteCBS isn't really limited in the number of slots it has open. I mean, to some extent it is, but it could always end one or two shows early and then debut a new drama in one of those slots.
Sundays will be vastly better this season for NBC because of the BIBLE AD, and Thursday's this spring will rate MUCH higher than last year. NBC will be fine and probably up year over year, even excluding the Super Bowl.
ReplyDeleteIt is probably going to beat survivor in viewers which is a feat for NBC. Too bad advertisers don't care about old viewers!
ReplyDeleteDo you have numbers for MF in the 18-34 group?
ReplyDeleteThe bible sequel should help but it won't cover all three Sundays hours for the entire Spring, so while Sundays as a whole might be up, I don't see them being THAT much up, but it's hard to say anyway without knowing what their exact plan is.
ReplyDeleteRegardless, I really don't see how NBC can be up year to year in raw number at season's end. Mondays will be down because The Voice is down and because The Blacklist is down, and I also doubt State of Affairs manages to do better than the Blacklist was doing last year. Tuesdays is down because The Voice is down and so is Chicago Fire. The comedies are unlikely to do much better, if better, than TBL did last fall or the other comedies did in the spring. Wednesdays are down at 9, about even at 9 and up at 10. Thursdays will probably be up year to year, I agree. Fridays we have yet to see but even if Constantine manages to improve, Grimm and Dateline will probably take average year to year drops.
Reign has to hit that 0.5 first before "staying there". I hope it does though, but I am not sure. And even that wouldn't be a good number, not really.
ReplyDeleteLOL. I just noticed that. I'd love to know the average age of TML viewers. It's gotta rank up there with BB.
ReplyDeleteThere's more that I could say, but you and I think alike. Plus, the Manson miniseries.
ReplyDeleteBasically, I think the biggest deal for NBC is if Marry Me actually clicks. That will help AAB and finally, finally, give them a comedy anchor.
2.83
ReplyDeleteYou can make money off of anyone. Plus, as I noted elsewhere, getting any viewers to watch a network is helpful, so the fact that NBC can now do that is a good thing.
ReplyDeleteThat's high. But I'm surprised Scandal skews younger.
ReplyDeleteShows averaging >2.00 in the 18-34:
ReplyDeleteFamily Guy
4,20
The Big Bang Theory
3,58
The Simpsons
3,15
Once Upon a Time
3,15
Scandal
3,15
The Voice
2,92
How to Get Away with Murder
2,90
Modern Family
2,83
Grey's Anatomy
2,55
Gotham
2,33
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
2,25
Scandal does indeed skew VERY young. Family Guy usually skews very young but is highly inflated here by the crossover episode, it usually won't beat this high. Big Bang is still a monster but is less of a monster than it is in 18-49.
Thanks guys
ReplyDeleteThe TV might be down now, but so is TBBT on Mondays. It'll probably be fine when it returns on Thursdays, but those numbers impact the average.
ReplyDeleteIn general, not to sound nasty, but I think you underestimate how little improvements can help. Sure, TBL on Thursdays isn't doing really well, but its 1.3 is almost certainly higher overall than what the comedies were doing there. Same goes for TMOL and CPD on Wednesdays. SOA might not do as well as TBL, but if it has a 2.0 or higher, it'll count in the network's average, as would TBL itself. And if any of the other series, whether they are the 6 episode comedies, the event/miniseries, the other dramas, work to some degree, they will help the overall average.
But then, I think you are right to highlight how TV is down a little and TB is also down. The season is still young, and maybe TB does well on Thursdays, if/when it goes there, and Allegiance is helped by that. But any drop off has to be worrying to NBC--not just because of the overall drop in strength, but because of the loss of the ability to help another show.
NBC: NBC shouldn't announce a final season for SVU yet because it's still there #3 rated drama after all these years. I think NBC needs SVU for a few more seasons until they have more stable shows to replace it with (of course if negotiations with the cast work out).
ReplyDeleteBut with that being said I do feel that NBC missed many opportunities to move SVU to one of their harder timeslots. It's viewers will likely follow it anywhere on the schedule. Next year NBC should use SVU to stabilize either Wednesday 8pm or Thursday 8pm.
TMoL would probably do great on Fridays for the same reason. It's older viewers will probably follow it there and it'll continie to get 8-10 million viewers even on Fridays. The only way I could see that working out though is if costs permit.
CBS: I don't think CBS should launch comedies opposite Modern Family. They probably wouldn't do well, unless CBSmoves TBBT there. All of their other non-TBBT comedies aren't ratinhs juggernauts and would probably flounder against ABC's comedies.
FOX: I beleive IDOL will be 2 hours in Wednesday's this spring so no need for them to replace RBS.
Thanks. I've only been paying close attention to ratings for the last couple of years and for some reason I can't remember him ever going this hard for an older skewing show.
ReplyDeleteAll of those things can indeed help but my point is that they still are a vast minority compared to all the other things that are down. And by the way, so far Laura has not improved on Revolution, that's a misconception. It might do it if it avoids to fall as much during the year since it's a procedural and not a serialized show but not a sure thing and if anything I would expect the improvement to be marginal. Any serious help will come from Thursdays (absolutely), Wednesdays at 10 with PD, possibly Sundays and maaaybe Fridays if they get lucky.
ReplyDeleteModern Family 3.4
ReplyDeleteBlacklist 2.8
Arrow 1.0
YES at Black-ish (I think that's what you meant) increasing from last week. It seems ABC has found a real hit behind MF.
ReplyDeleteWish Arrow was higher, but at least it is over 1s.
ReplyDeleteGood for Blackish! It rose from last week, so it seems like it's a keeper. Also, expect adjustments
Damn you Arrow, I wanted higher than that .It's still perfectly good, but I wanted higher.
ReplyDeleteBlack-ish growing week to week even as MF falls is very impressive. That show is getting renewed and should be getting a backorder anytime now.
i predict MF to adjust up to a 3.6 (so a two tenth adjustment).
ReplyDeleteLet's see if Black-ish can stay up or even go up as well.
TG 2.2.
ReplyDeleteAnd TM at 2.0
TG continues to build on The Middle. Very, very good results for ABC's comedy block.
Arrow still came back higher than it finished last season, I think some people were being a bit unrealistic expecting it to come back so much higher, even its DVR figures were down at the end of last season (same with TVD, TO and SPN).
ReplyDeleteI hope The Middle adjusts up! Then it would be up from last week!
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, these are really good results!
Yeah my optimism may have gotten the best of me. I am a bit worried about the 100 now though. And I agree that this is still a win for Arrow.
ReplyDeletewell at least it rose from its S2 premiere & finale. And higher viewer numbers then for its s2 premiere.
ReplyDeleteThis time though ABC should leave the line up exactly as is, if they have mid season comedies to come in they should replace the Tuesday line up.
ReplyDeleteI know, I wanted that too. At least it's up from last year season opener, so that's something. Still, I think there are good chances Arrow goes higher once The Flash crossovers starts.
ReplyDeleteAnd of course, let's hope Arrow adjusts up!
For mid season, I believe, they only have two comedies: Fresh off the Boat and Galavant. We know what ABC will do with Galavant but we still don't know what they'll do with FOTB so...
ReplyDeleteLast years Sunday lineup was at 0.9-1.2. The BIBLE netted 3s on the HISTORY CHANNEL. I have no doubt that NBC getting 3s on Sunday versus 0.9s will vastly improve the night and The Bible AD will provide a massive lead in for whatever else NBC pairs it with. I think overall Sunday's will be up between 100-200% year over year simply because they were so abysmal last year.
ReplyDeleteThat alone will be a major push toward moving the needle for NBC. Then consider that Thursday's will also likely to be up by 50-100% year over year, that will help NBC's Spring eclipse last Spring by quite a bit IMO.
Arrow was solid. Good. With people binging the 2nd season on Netflix there might be a potential to pick up some new eyeballs too.
ReplyDeleteI think it will do fine, though they should really have aired it last night. I predict a 0.7/0.8 for its premier which would be very good.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't worry about The 100, the show will at least perform with the 0.6s it delivered last season, so I don't think it'll be in any danger. But even then, let's hope for higher!
ReplyDeleteI agree. I am already a bit annoyed that they will preempt the first part of the block next week. I wish they would air it as a one-piece all the time, either air it all or don't air it. Splitting it is just a bad idea.
ReplyDeleteI feel like 0.6 would be a let down but maybe I am letting my love for the show cloud my judgment here.
ReplyDeleteThey'll preempt the first part of the block for what?
ReplyDeleteit rose for its 2nd episode in season 2 also. So we might see a repeat of that.
ReplyDeleteI mean for now I just want to know AHS's ratings.... Hope we'll have the adjusted ones tonight.
ReplyDeleteIf I recall correctly the premiers of TVD, Arrow and TO were not their highest rated episodes of the season, that could easily happen again this season.
ReplyDeleteIt's being reported TMOL is behind Survivor in total viewers. How can that be if Marc says it was rated higher?
ReplyDeleteVery good for Black-ish going up in its 3rd week. Full season pickup coming any day now.
ReplyDeleteRed Band got a 0.9 :( I'm gonna miss this show.
ReplyDeleteOn a happier note though The 100 FINALLY has a promo!
well Arrow went last season from 0.9 (2.7 mil viewers) for its premiere to 1.1 (3mil viewers) for its 2nd episode.
ReplyDeleteThey also need to use MF to launch a new drama at 10pm while MF is still strong.
ReplyDeleteNashville is keeping steady... I'm surprised, I honestly though it would be hitting 1.2s by now, but good for it! It bodes well for the show
ReplyDeleteLet's hope The 100 premieres high in 2 weeks! I really, really hope it can grow its ratings on S2 even if that is unlikely

Stalker dropped but not too much. And now that these numbers are out, can CBS please decide which new shows to give a full season? I would love for all four shows to get a back nine order but that seems unlikely.
ReplyDeleteI say a 0.6 at the very least, I think it will premiere higher.
ReplyDeleteIf we are realistic, it will probably do a 0.7-0.8 following Arrow, but it may do even higher. Let's remember that it managed to hold 0.6s during summer with no lead in support whatsoever, so it should be able to do better during the fall and winter when ratings are usually higher.
And even if it doesn't grow, it will at least be steady, but I can't honestly imagine the show doing bad or being in actual danger, at least not right now
And that's before you consider the possible .1-.2 improvements in other slots.
ReplyDeleteI know there was huge buzz for it after it finished S1 and during summer too, and a lot of people said they were going to start watching, I hope at least some of them stuck with it...and have nielsen boxes lol. Hopefully the buzz will pick up again now with the CW's bigger shows already premiered and it should get a lot of promotional attention too :)
ReplyDeleteConfused about how TMOL rated higher than Survivor in Marc's description but lower in overall viewers and the demo.
ReplyDeleteMarc's ratings don't measure the entire country.
ReplyDeleteBecause a number of single old ladies are watching TMOL - so higher households, where Survivor has more people watching together, which won't be clear in HH numbers.
ReplyDeleteSo a 1.0 is great for Arrow but a 0.9 for The Vampire Diaries (6th season show may I remind) isn't.
ReplyDeleteWhat politics is this.
NO is certain; Scorpion is a safe bet, but CBS will wait until after TBBT moves to have new metrics; Stalker is underperforming compared to CSI; MS will not get back nine with its terrible demo performance. (This week will be very telling with no football inflation.)
ReplyDeleteHere are the 18-34 ratigs:
ReplyDeleteCW:
Arrow: 0.9
The Flash (R): 0.6
ABC:
The Middle: 1.1
The Goldbergs: 1.2
MF: 2.4
Black-ish: 1.7
CBS:
Survivor: 1.4
Criminal Minds: 1.1
Stalker: 0.9
NBC:
Laura: 0.8
SVU: 1.3
Chicago PD: 1.0
FOX:
Hell's Kitchen: 1.0
Red Band Society: 0.7
1.0 demo for arrow
ReplyDeleteHonestly expected more . :-(
Stalker :/ The critics really did a number on it.
ReplyDelete1.0 for ARROW!! That's not good. Probably it will adjust up!
ReplyDeleteHopefully, Red Band Society adjusts up!! I really love this show!! I don't want it to end.
I think Stalker is, um, dying. Black-ish is doing good. Modern Family is slaying! Nashville is OK!
;)
how could you expect more? And it was never gonna do Flash numbers. It actually rose from S2 premiere and finale.
ReplyDeleteI was expecting a little better for Arrow, but I'll take 1.0
ReplyDeleteReally disappointed by Stalker's ratings.
That makes perfect sense, and it's an indication my coffee has yet to kick in.
ReplyDeleteI expected at the range of 1.1-1.2 demo. Considering all olicity shipping
ReplyDeleteSame feeling for arrow .
ReplyDeleteWell seeing how rapidly TVD has dropped.
ReplyDeleteWhy is 1.0 not good for Arrow? It's higher than last season's premiere and is a good rating for a CW show on its third season.
ReplyDeleteHallowen specials I think
ReplyDeleteI agree with your optimism .I don't think the show will be in danger either, it's more a "I wish it was doing even better and I am worried it won't" kind of worry than a "I am affraid it will be cancelled" kind of worry.
ReplyDeleteHH is not the same as viewers or demo.
ReplyDeleteI've been switching between the two for a few weeks now lol! I seriously don't know how I'm gonna handle the wait.
ReplyDelete0.6 at the end of fall would have been good. But for beginning of the season 0.7 will guarantee s3
ReplyDeletewell those arent the final numbers yet. And this show actually increased its demo from its finale. Even SPN went down by a 0.1 from its finale. Arrow season 2 just came out on Netflix, ratings might increase next week like last season.
ReplyDeleteI don't think FOX will pull Red Band, what can they air there? And Gracepoint is probably going even lower judging by its premiere rating anyway. I suppose they can air Sleepy Hollow repeats but they might just let Red Band run through the fall...
ReplyDeleteeverybody is comparing it to Flash.
ReplyDeleteIt's always surprising to me how young SVU skews.
ReplyDeleteI've said it before that the 0.9 for TVD was fine especially considering how it ended the season and the fact that now it had to face similar skewing Grey's Anatomy.
ReplyDeleteRegardless, growing from its previous premiere is always more impressive, so I give Arrow the edge here a little bit.
I am not sure if waiting until November sweeps (when TBBT moves) isn't too late.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that New Orleans and Scorpion get it, Stalker doesn't and the only one up in the air is Madam. I had written it off last week but it almost beat Stalker this week and 60 Minutes is an equivalent lead-in to Criminal Minds, so I dunno. I never knew what CBS expectations for that show were.
ReplyDeleteI am rooting for Scorpion and Madam Secretary.
I agree. But I said last year that the show, while not a powerhouse, was beinga undervalued by the horrible and incompatible lead-ins that ABC was throwing at it (seriously Super Fun Night and Mixology?). But it's still surprising to see its competitive with Stalker and PD.
ReplyDeleteThe Flaah is a much well known character than Green Arrow to begin with in the comics though, and hopefully some of the new viewers that watch The Flash and don't watch Arrow will be interested in Arrow after seeing the crossovers and help Arrow grow over time. Assuming The Flash stays strong of course..
ReplyDeleteI really hope you are right. They need to focus their promotional efforts on it now. Use the flash to promote it.
ReplyDeleteThe Middle has gone -11% year to year in all three of its airing so far, ridiculously consistent!
ReplyDeleteI was hoping Arrow would do better considering how The Flash exploded out of the gate, but I guess 1.0 is okay, especially after that 0.7 last year.
ReplyDeleteUse everything to promote it! I really want this show to end like JR plans, I can't remember how many seasons he said he had in mind but he must get them! I find it a lot easier to love a show when the EP has a set plan from beginning to end :)
ReplyDeleteArrow season 2 premiered with a 0.9 not a 0.7
ReplyDeleteyeah I think the crossover in episode 8 will improve Arrow's ratings.
ReplyDeleteFlash's re-run numbers are actually pretty impressive. It rose in the 2nd half hour. and a 0.6 is higher than some CW shows on it's first run
ReplyDeleteAre you sure that is true?
ReplyDelete$10 says MS gets a back 9.
ReplyDeleteI bet FOX wishes it had more baseball games instead of one NLCS game (Saturday) and World Series. The have no cover for this dismal season - especially letting three decent series go - XF, AD! and AH. How soon before FOX pulls Mulaney for an animated (R)? They have 4 DOA series (Utopia, Mulaney, GP and RBS, taking up 3.5 out of 15 hours - even with slimmed down Utopia). That is a big chunk of sched and then you add underperforming SH.... I'll give NG/Minday a pass due to lead-in.
ReplyDeleteI'm not crazy about these Arrow numbers and what it could possibly mean for The 100 when it returns. Wednesday's are tougher than I thought they would be. The 8pm shows aren't powerhouses. I really thought Arrow would do better. I'll take the 1.0 and keep my fingers crossed though, for no huge drops.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't comparing it to the S2 premiere, just to another episode (2x15 I think) where the show hit 0.7, its series low so far.
ReplyDeleteaah ok
ReplyDeleteAgree entirely!
ReplyDeleteMan, The CW has done a great job the last two nights!
ReplyDeleteRapidly? Its generally been at 1.0-1.2 since season 3 and 4 and only dropped below 1.0 last season
ReplyDelete1.0 is up from Arrow's season 2 premiere and finale.
ReplyDeleteGood to know, I will catch up both seasons soon. Btw Black-ish like you mention was really good yesterday.
ReplyDeleteif Arrow goes up to 1.1 to 1.2 that would be consider a great success
ReplyDeleteI compare to Supernatural. Which scored 1.1 or 1.2.
ReplyDeleteso a 1.1 is that much better than a 1.0? One could argue that SPN had a much higher lead in with Flash scoring a 1.9
ReplyDeleteAnd had a 1.9 lead-in while Arrow at best had a 0.8 lead-in? And when Arrow had stronger competition in its timeslot vs. SPN? So SPN got 0.1 more, which could've been 1.05 vs. 1.04, big deal.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I don't know what I was thinking.
ReplyDeleteI think it will in the end, is what I am saying, and I think that, in the end, there will be enough improvement across the board so that NBC will finish up.
ReplyDeleteNice For Arrow! Can't wait til it gets higher, and I'm pretty sure it will by next week. (Sigh you know why). Flash great job!
ReplyDeleteHell yeah!! I'm so happy.
ReplyDeletei wonder how the messengers and zombie will do. i really liked the trailer of the messengers (is there one for izombie?) so I will check that one out. feels a bit more "adulty" than some other shows
ReplyDeletenot sure it would be cause it is its first season and it has a better lead in ratings wise... a 0.5 would probably be acceptable but a 0.4 would not I don't think
ReplyDeleteOn The CW, the season premiere of Arrow earned a 1.0 adults 18-49 rating up a tenth from the 0.9 last season's premiere earned. Your predictions were about right! How come this site http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2014/10/09/tv-ratings-wednesday-stalker-red-band-society-criminal-minds-slide-black-ish-rises-arrow-premiere-up-from-last-season/312521/ saids this?
ReplyDelete
