Tuesday 10/07/14
Household
Rating/Share
CBS 9.1/15
NBC 5.8/ 9
ABC 3.1/ 5
CW 2.6/ 4
Fox 1.8/ 3
-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Tuesday 10/08/13:
CW: +86, NBC: – 6, CBS: – 7, ABC: -18, Fox: -25
———-
Note: The following labels are based on the household overnights and are subject to change given the availability of other pending data streams. As always, these overnights are your first look at the ratings and a precursor to what could lie ahead. And we take into account other benchmarks including the expected demographic ratings, potential DVR usage, the critical acclaim (or lack of) and the social media presence.
-Winners:
“NCIS” (CBS), “The Flash” (CW), “NCIS: New Orleans” (CBS)
-Honorable Mention:
“The Voice” (NBC)
-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Selfie” (ABC), “Manhattan Love Story” (ABC), “New Girl” (Fox), “The Mindy Project” (Fox)
———-
Ratings Breakdown:
CBS, as expected, dominated the Tuesday household overnights with its line-up of “NCIS” (11.1 rating/18 share – #1 for the evening), week three of compatible “NCIS: New Orleans” (#1: 9.8/15) and “Person of Interest” (#1: 6.4/11). And a two-hour clips edition of “The Voice” (#2: 6.1/ 9 from 8-10 p.m.) leading into reliable “Chicago Fire” (#2: 5.4/ 9 at 10 p.m.) should be enough for NBC to compete in the key demos. “Chicago Fire,” which built year-to-year by eight percent, will have no trouble winning the time period in adults 18-49. But worthy of accolades was the series-premiere of The CW’s highly anticipated “The Flash.”
“The Flash” finished third in the 8 p.m. hour with a 3.4/ 5, which was The CW’s highest-rated premiere in the overnights since “90210” on Sept. 2, 2008 (translation: six years). Comparably, episode one of “The Flash” bested “The Originals” on the year-ago evening (1.3/ 2 on 10/08/13) by 166 percent. It beat the first hour of special “The iHeartradio Music Festival” last Tuesday (0.7/ 1) by a mammoth 386 percent. And “The Flash” outdelivered the debut of parent series “Arrow” (3.0/ 5 on 10/12/12) by 13 percent. And also very promising was the growth of one-tenth of a rating point (or three percent) at 8:30 p.m. (3.3/ 5 to 3.4/ 5). Given the available platform, “The Flash” is off to a fast – and “winning” – start on The CW, which is also expected to resonate via the DVR and in social media.
Lifted by the solid sampling for “The Flash,” season 10 of lead-out “Supernatural” opened at a 1.9/ 5 at 9 p.m., which was 27 percent above the 1.5/ 2 (out of “The Originals”) on the year-ago evening.
In week two news, ABC comedies “Selfie” and “Manhattan Love Story” both dipped by double-digit percentages from their already soft starts last Tuesday. “Selfie” opened with a fourth-place 2.9/ 5 in the overnights at 8 p.m., which was 22 percent below the 3.7/ 6 one week earlier (and that translated into 5.31 million viewers and a 1.6 rating/5 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data). And “Manhattan Love Story” dropped to a 2.3/ 4 (#4) at 8:30 p.m., which was 28 percent below the already anemic 3.2/ 5 debut last Tuesday (which translated into 4.70 million viewers and a 1.5/ 5 in the demo). The two sitcoms, on average, dropped from year-ago Tuesday 8-9 p.m. time period “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” (5.3/ 9 on 10/08/13) by a hefty 51 percent.
Given the lack of lead-in support, relocated “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” dipped to a series-low 3.0/ 5 in the household overnights from 9-10 p.m., which was six percent below the 3.2/ 5 one week earlier and 43 percent below the aforementioned 5.3/ 9 on the year-ago evening.
Episode four of drama “Forever” capped off the evening for ABC with a series-low 3.6/ 6 at 10 p.m., which was still a marked improvement (+57 percent) over a repeat of “Scandal” on the year-ago evening (which replaced canceled “Lucky 7”).
Struggling Fox closed the night with a repeat of the one-hour “Family Guy” season-opener (featuring the crossover with “The Simpsons”) in place of “Utopia” at a 1.6/ 2 from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, that was actually one-tenth of a rating point below “Utopia” last week (1.7/ 3 on Sept. 30), and it led into the pairing of tired sitcom “New Girl” (#4: 2.1/ 3) and “The Mindy Project” (#4: 1.8/ 3).
