Note: The following labels are based on the household overnights and are subject to change given the availability of other pending data streams. The overnights, of course, are your first look at what to potentially expect when the other results come in. And we always take into account other benchmarks including the expected demographic ratings, potential DVR usage, the critical acclaim (or lack of) and the social media presence.

-Winners:
“Sunday Night Football” (NBC)

-Solid Total Viewer Base:
“60 Minutes” (CBS), “Madam Secretary” (CBS), “The Good Wife” (CBS)

-Disappointing:
“Resurrection” (ABC)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Mulaney” (Fox), “Revenge” (ABC)

———-

Ratings Breakdown:
The Cincinnati Bengals at the New England Patriots on “Sunday Night Football” led NBC to another Sunday overnight victory, with an estimated 12.8 rating/20 share in households from 8:30-11:30 p.m. ET (peaking at 9:30 p.m. with a 14.3/22). Comparably, this was five percent below the 13.5/22 for the New Orleans Saints at the Dallas Cowboys one week earlier, which translated into 22.68 million viewers and an 8.7 rating/25 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same Day data. In other words, this is another stellar football performance for NBC.

Earlier in the evening on NBC was pre-game “Football Night in America” at a 2.2/ 4 at 7 p.m. (#3), a 5.1/ 9 at 7:30 p.m. (#2) and a 7.9/13 at 8 p.m. (#2). As a reminder, results for any live sporting event are always approximate.

Over at CBS, results are estimated due to an approximate 30-minute late start caused by an NFL Football primetime overrun. And the estimated half-hour breakdown is as follows:

CBS Sunday
7:00 p.m. NFL Football: 12.6/22 (#1)
7:30 p.m. “60 Minutes”: 10.3/17 (#1)
8:00 p.m. “60 Minutes”: 10.7/17 (#1)
8:30 p.m. “Madam Secretary”: 8.7/13 (#2)
9:00 p.m. “Madam Secretary”: 8.8/13 (#2)
9:30 p.m. “The Good Wife”: 7.8/12 (#2)
10:00 p.m. “The Good Wife”: 7.7/12 (#2)
10:30 p.m. “CSI”: 5.7/10 (#2)
11:00 p.m. “CSI”: 5.3/10

Particularly promising was this third episode of older-skewing drama “Madam Secretary,” which dropped by only an estimated three percent from the 9.0/14 one week earlier (which resulted in 12.72 million viewers and a 1.4/ 4 among adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same Day data). Like “The Mysteries of Laura” on NBC, there should be room for dramas as such that cater to an older audience.

With more compatible lead-in support this season, “The Good Wife” on CBS is benefitting with a rise of an approximate 13 percent in the overnights from the 6.9/11 on the year-ago evening.

In series-premiere news, live action “Seinfeld”-wannabe sitcom “Mulaney” on Fox got off to a poor start with a mere 1.7/ 3 in the household overnights at 9:30 p.m. Comparably, this was 39 percent below “American Dad” on the year-ago evening (2.8/ 4 on 10/06/13), with retention out of lead-in “Family Guy” (#4: 2.7/ 4 at 9 p.m.) of just 63 percent. While the strength of the Fox sitcoms falls among the young adult demographics, of course, a 1.7 in the overnights just will not translate well elsewhere.

Earlier in the evening on Fox was the season-premiere of animated “Bob’s Burgers” at an estimated 2.2/ 4 at 7:30 p.m., which was 19 percent below an encore of “The Simpsons” on the year-ago evening (2.7/ 4 on 10/06/13) and 31 percent below the 7 p.m. half-hour on Fox (3.2/ 5, which is a combination of a repeat of “The Simpsons” and a primetime football overrun). Veteran “The Simpsons” followed with a 2.9/ 4 at 9 p.m. (#4), followed by relocated “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” at a 2.4/ 4 at 8:30 p.m., which held an adequate 83 percent of “The Simpsons” lead-in.

ABC, meanwhile, was considerably soft from 9-11 p.m. with its pairing of dramas “Resurrection” (#3: 3.8/ 6) and “Revenge” (#3: 3.4/ 6). Comparably, “Resurrection” slipped from its week-ago season-opener (4.8/ 7 on Sept. 28) by 21 percent, with a loss of 16 percent from the 4.5/ 7 for former time period occupant “Revenge” on the year-ago evening. And while “Revenge” is an improvement from failed year-ago occupant “Betrayal” (2.8/ 5 on 10/06/13), it did drop by 13 percent from last week’s season-premiere (3.9/ 7 on Sept. 28) and by 24 percent from the aforementioned year-ago overnights at 9 p.m.

Earlier in the evening on ABC was an encore of “Once Upon a Time” (#4: 1.8/ 3 at 7 p.m.) into a third-place 4.9/ 8 for the second episode of the new season at 8 p.m. Given the traditional pattern, that 4.9 in the overnights could come close to a 3-rating among adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same Day data.

I really hope OUAT stayed above 3.0, I'm hoping for at least a 3.2. That episode was even better than the premiere imo, definitely in for the best season yet!

    ReplyDelete
  2. Of course Mulaney bombed.

    ReplyDelete
  3. ABC's Sunday would be dead without OUAT.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I'm so with you on this! :)

    ReplyDelete
  5. Wow, I didn't expect for FOX to fall this much! And ABC didn't do that good either; at least it doesn't seem like Revenge will fall much

    ReplyDelete
  6. Hope OUAT is above 3.0.Last night episode was better than premiere .

    ReplyDelete
  7. Resurrection failing is "surprising". Last night was a good episode, much better than the premier. I mean all 3 ABC shows rose their level last night. But Resurrection got such a bad promotion that it isn't surprising.
Sadly ABC isn't into shifting time slots. Forever and Resurrection would be the perfect switch.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Hope OUAT did well in the ratings and demos.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I guess CSI did better than last week ?!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Once 2.9/3.0
    Res 1.6/1.5
    Rev 1.2/1.1

    ReplyDelete
  11. I hope Madam Secretary will skew younger this time.

    ReplyDelete
  12. ouch for revenge, cbs?

    ReplyDelete
  13. I hope Revenge managed to improve its relative performance and that OUAT stayed up there. Also really hope that B99 did well again, I am in love with that show.

    ReplyDelete
  14. The numbers for CBS are way off because of the football overrun.

    Mdm 1.9
    Good 1.9
    CSI 1.2

    ReplyDelete
  15. Seems like OUAT did around a 2.9/3.0 and Revenge a 1.1/1.2 in the halfhours for the top25 markets.

    ReplyDelete
  16. ABC does a horrible job at promotion for Sundays-
I mean not 1 promo for revenge during TGIT but like 100 for Selfie which is gonna flop anyway

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm confused, where are you getting that number for Once? Doesn't it say 4.9/ 8 ?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Those are the demo inTOP 25 markets

    ReplyDelete
  19. PLEASE ABC do something with Revenge :(

    ReplyDelete
  20. I hope Once gets higher than 3.0 this week too.
I can't see neither Resurrection nor Revenge renewed.

    ReplyDelete
  21. That would be very disappointing, I hope it doesn't remain like that in the demos.

    ReplyDelete
  22. That would be perfectly fine for OUAT, especially since it would still potentially adjust up like every ABC show has been doing.

    ReplyDelete
  23. same but it hardly received any promotion

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yes, it would. But it's sad for Revenge although I'm not exactly hyped for this season.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hope OUAT and Resurrection has good numbers. The first is one of my favorites and the latter is really good too. Underrated show.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Last week, the top 25 demos were Once 3.5, Res 2.3, Rev 1.5 as a point of comparison.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It's looks like revenge did a 1.1 :(

    ReplyDelete
  28. I hope your right

    ReplyDelete
  29. I hope Brooklyn Nine Nine didn't drop too much.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Mulaney has to be one of the crappiest, least original shows I've ever seen.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well, I guess ABC try to save Selfie somehow. It's a new show and every cancellation after a few episodes is kind of an humiliation.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Keep in mind that MS likely has an older but wealthy, educated audience, CBS owns it, and it's not a crime show. All of that works in its favor, even if it doesn't skew young.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hope B99 does OK. I'm sadly not surprised about Revenge at all even though I like it the show has been falling for such a long time now, I hope the writers realise this and start wrapping storylines up.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hi @Edward Would you mind me asking where you get the Top 25 Demos from? If you'd rather answer privately I'm on darkufo@spoilertv.com

    ReplyDelete
  35. I don't dislike Resurrection but the problem is that it's just too damn slow. I almost fell asleep watching the premiere. It's definitely better suited for binge watch later. I can take slow episodes. The governor episodes on TWD for instance were really good in my opinion though a lot of people complained and I can also enjoy a slow burner a la The Killing, but Resurrection is just too much in my opinion. I did think the ending to the premiere was great and unexpected though, it was the highest point in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Honestly, could CBS have actually expected MS to skew young? Does anything about the show indicate that it'd even have a slight chance of being younger-skewing? If they ordered it expecting it to skew young, they are dumb and deserve to keep sinking more and more into the pits that they are becoming increasingly trapped in.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I've read people rooting for Mulaney as a comedian but there were comments that his show just didn't turn out well.

    ReplyDelete
  38. this looks good for B99, guess it was a smart move to get it away from tuesday

    ReplyDelete
  39. Fast nationals - Once 3.0/3.2, Rev 1.3/1.2

    ReplyDelete
  40. I agree with this. I am not fully able to explain what CBS had in mind with Madam but I have sincere doubts they were expecting it to be a hit with the 18-49 demo. Maybe they've managed to sell adds based on the 25-54 demo for this show, in which I assume it does better, I don't know.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Do we have the ones for Ressurectio?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Where did you get these from?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Frozen Oncers(was TeenWolfers)October 6, 2014 at 4:10 PM

3.1 for OUAT is awesome considering it will most likely adjust up again :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Mulaney does a 1.0 and looses 50% of Family Guy!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Why FOX didn't premiere Mulaney last week is beyond me.

    ReplyDelete
  46. 1.8 for Resurrection is not as bad as I expected from Marc's analysis.

    ReplyDelete
  47. 3.1, great. The same drop as scandal and the week 2 of season 2

    ReplyDelete
  48. Great for ONCE. Hopefully it will be adjusted upwards slightly, to a 3.2 or 3.3. Great to see it holding up well.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Great to see OUAT still in the 3.0 range.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Actually, Scandal dropped only five tenths; OUAT dropped six. (barring adjustments)

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hoping it adjusts up.

    ReplyDelete
  52. It will prob adjust up to a 1.4
    Not great but stable

    ReplyDelete
  53. Frozen Oncers(was TeenWolfers)October 6, 2014 at 4:18 PM

I'll be shocked if it doesn't adjust up!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Considering how much ressurrection fell I don't think that's bad for revenge. I expected a 1.1

    ReplyDelete
  55. I was prepared for a 1.1. It's not a good number, but it's on line with its spring ratings, so I'm fine with it. And it'll probably adjust up

    ReplyDelete
  56. It will adjust up, that's for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  57. OUAT is still over 3s! I'm really glad for it!
A 1.3 is not a great rating for Revenge, but it is in line with its spring ratings; plus, with all the ABC adjustment it will probably be a 1.4 or a 1.5, which is very little fall from its premiere

    ReplyDelete
  58. I'm just relieved that it's not a 1.1

    ReplyDelete
  59. I have to think they are expecting an older-skewing show as well. It's a Sunday night, which CBS has struggled with for years. It gets solid overall numbers. Yes, it's demo is weak, but the demo as a whole is weakening. I imagine if it slips below 1.0, the show is toast. But if it can hold in the mid 1.0's with a high audience, it might manage to survive as a time period holder of sorts. It's not like CBS can reasonably expect anything else to do better there. All of their 10PM dramas now struggle to crack 2.0 on a good night. Moving any of them would surely bring them down to MS level, likely with lower audience. Or worse. MS could become another Harry's Law for sure. But at the same time, what was CBS expecting?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Me too. I think there are fair chances Revenge holds at that level

    ReplyDelete
  61. actually Revenge being against CSI is not a good thing... It's expected to see Revenge decline a bit and CSI rising a bit...

    ReplyDelete
  62. 3.1 is what I expected for OUAT, probably adjusting up to a 3.3.
Mulaney is DOA. With the standard drop it'll be roughly .7 next week. We now have a new contender for first cancellation of the season. Possible series low for Family Guy too.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Awesome for Once & I predicted 3.0-3.2.Great episode too

    ReplyDelete
  64. Ya I think so too. If it adjusts up to a 1.4 that would make it a stable performer

    ReplyDelete
  65. Who said CBS expected the show to skew young? As one reporter said last spring, when the shows were being revealed, ordering this show looks like CBS waving the white flag on Sundays. It won't compete with other networks in chasing down younger viewers, so why not go for older, wealthy/educated audiences, as in the same people that watch The Good Wife? Made sense to me then and makes sense to me now.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I really doubt that they share an audience.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I think Revenge held up ok given the expectations set by the premiere. An upwards adjustment would be more than welcomed though

    ReplyDelete
  68. What do you mean the demo as a whole is weakening? I think I know, but I want to be sure.
And yes, good points all around. Not to harp on this, but let's keep in mind CBS has to have something other than a crime show, which this is, and it owns the show. All of that will probably work in its favor.

    ReplyDelete
  69. OUAT is really a strong performer. Doesn't get the same press as other shows, but it probably should with numbers like that.

    ReplyDelete
  70. 3.1 is still good for Once...And with ABC, we could still see an upward adjustment! I hope Revenge will adjust up!

And for B99... Still good... for Sunday considering how Simpsons/Family Guy dropped...and best Comedy for the previous week on FOX...
Mulaneys rating do not surprise me!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Whoa Madam Secretary! Were there pre-emptions or did it actually rose this much!

    ReplyDelete
  72. No but CSI is a crime show, so the General Audience could chose between both CSI and revenge. CSI is more abordable for this kind of audience as most of episodes are stand alone ;)

    ReplyDelete
  73. I still haven't seen a single ABC show not adjusting up- except pre-empted Castle- so chances are Revenge did a 1.4 or even a 1.5. It may not be doing great, but it is an improvement over other things in the timeslot (Betrayal did a 1.0 on its second episode, so it's already a 30% improvement)

    ReplyDelete
  74. It started 30 minutes late due to football overruns. It's inflated.

  76. I knew there was something off. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  77. There's an error in OUAT's case. It says 3.0 at the first half-hour and then 1.4 on the second. Did you mean 3.4?

    ReplyDelete
  78. The second half hour of OUAT must be wrong

    ReplyDelete
  79. Brooklyn Nine-Nine not great, but still healthy numbers for FOX, plus its retention is not that bad. I wish it was doing better though

    ReplyDelete
  80. Network TV shows seem to be skewing older and older. 3.0 was just a season or two ago an "okay" number to debut to. Now if a show premieres to 3.0, our minds are blown. (Heck, if anything on network TV aside from TBBT and MF can even crack a 3.0, our minds are blown.) A few years ago, below 2.0 was "cancellation" territory almost automatically. Now it's pretty standard space and you have to go considerably lower to be in serious danger. Sure, new shows are on a tighter leash than veterans, but still. Will it be long before 2.0 is golden territory and 1.2 is acceptable YA demo?

And while audiences have definitely gone down considerably as well, CBS still manages to have most shows do well in overall audience. So clearly "people" are still watching TV live. Just less so in the demo. It's going to be harder and harder to punish shows for being older-skewing when the majority of all the network's lineups are becoming just that.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Well, if CBS cancels it because not enough of it's 11-12 million views are in the demo...

    ReplyDelete
  82. Oh my god seeing one hit above 3 twice... :D
haven't been in the ratings for long so I've never seen it before lol.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I hope it can remain there next week, though it seems like it could fall from there, but even if it does 2.8-2.6 it would still be better than any S3 rating

    ReplyDelete

Nice for ouat. A predictable drop but it's ok. Maybe it will be adjusted up as usual. Happy for its numbers. The second episode was even better than the premiere imho. Finally this season's villain was revealed! I love Elizabeth Mitchell and she really looks badass being the snow queen so I'm over excited for next week's episode! Damn it revenge :(

  85. Afv will return so it will have a 1.4 lead in no a .8

  86. For revenge I think that's it's ok considering how much ressurrection fell

  87. If ABC has adjustments like last week, it will probably look like this.
    OUAT: 3.4
    Resurrection: 2.1
    Revenge: 1.4
Of course, we can't know if those will be the adjustments, but it could as well happen (and Resurrection would look a lot better)

  88. I don't think OUAT is the kind of show that requires a lead-in.

  89. I know I'm impressed. Ouat has strong social media hype

  90. sounds great for ouat i hope next week will be solid rating

  91. Actually I think it's pretty good. It is going against the strongest competition of the week. The first half hour of SNF.

  92. OUAT got a 3.1, which is still very good.

  93. Mulaney premiere even lower than I expected

  94. Just thinking about it, I wonder how TWD will affect these numbers next week. 8pm and 8:30pm shows will probably be fine but from 9pm onwards...mmm. Family Guy might hit a new low and the less said about Mulaney the better (could it be this years Rake?).

Affecting Resurrection and MS might have a spillover effect to the 10pm shows too.

  95. OUAT makes me happy again.

  96. Yep, OUAT IS the lead-in, it just "anchors" the night if that's what they say

  97. Yep and most of season 2.....

  98. Yep, I fear Resurrection might be cancelled because of TWD.
I mean 1.8 with only a Fox show as competition and with TWD at 9? bye

  99. well Once is high. Still high right? :)

  100. Nashville and Blacklish also didn't adjust in premiere week. But I agree that it should be able to adjust a bit.
