Ratings Breakdown:
The season-premiere of CBS’ regularly scheduled Thursday night line-up led the evening, besting No. 2 ABC by 13 percent in the household overnights. Comparably, while the Eye net did increase by 13 percent from its year-ago overnight average, it was 26 percent below the average for opening night Thursday last season (9.2 rating/15 share on 9/26/13). And the final “Thursday Night Football” match-up last week (San Diego Chargers vs. Denver Broncos) was considerably stronger overall with a 10.6/17 in the overnights.
At 8 p.m. on CBS, “The Big Bang Theory” moved back to the night with an 11.0 rating/18 share in the household overnights, which topped the evening and beat its most recent Monday 8 p.m. outing (10.2/16 on Oct. 20) by eight percent. At 8:30 p.m., the sophomore season-premiere of relocated “Mom” returned with a dominant 7.0/11, which was 27 percent above the 5.5/ 8 for its series-debut out of “2 Broke Girls” on Monday 9/23/13. Comparably, however, retention for “Mom” out of “The Big Bang Theory” was not impressive at 64 percent.
Keep in mind that ABC’s regularly scheduled “Grey’s Anatomy” from 8-9 p.m. last night was preempted for another airing of animated special “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” (#2t, 3.9/ 6), which always manages to generate some interest in the key demos.
Next on CBS was the 12th (and final) season premiere of “Two and a Half Men” at a 6.6/10 (#2) at 9 p.m., which was 27 percent above failed year-ago occupant “The Crazy Ones” (5.2/ 9 on 10/31/13). In series-premiere news, “The McCarthys,” headlined by Tyler Ritter and former “Roseanne” star Laurie Metcalf, opened with a 5.5/ 9 (#2) at 9:30 p.m., which held a very respectable 83 percent of the “Two and a Half Men” lead-in. And “The McCarthys” beat a repeat of “The Big Bang Theory” in the time period one year earlier (5.2/ 9 on 10/31/13) by six percent. Consider this positive sampling for “The McCarthys.”
In other season-premiere news, CBS drama “Elementary” returned for season three with a second-place 5.2/ 9 in the overnights at 10 p.m., which trailed competing “How To Get Away With Murder” on ABC (#1: 6.7/11) by 22 percent. One year earlier, “Elementary” scored a 6.0/10 in the overnights (opposite a 6.8/12 for “Scandal” on ABC).
Also on ABC last night was relocated “Scandal” at a first-place 7.2/11 from 9-10 p.m., which was on par from last week.
Elsewhere, the results were minimal. Veteran “Bones” on Fox scored a 3.9/ 6 in the 8 p.m. hour (#2t), leading into episode five of failing “Gracepoint” at a 2.2/ 3 from 9-10 p.m. (#4). Comparably, that 2.2/ 3 was flat from one week earlier.
NBC’s already limited recent 9-10 p.m. sitcoms took a hit opposite the CBS chucklers, with “Bad Judge” at a 2.7/ 4 at 9 p.m. (#4) and “A To Z” at a 1.8/ 3 (#4) at 9:30 p.m. Both were series lows. Earlier in the evening was diluted “The Big Loser” at a 2.9/ 5 from 8-9 p.m. (#4), which was actually one-tenth of a rating point (or four percent) above the 2.8/ 5 one week earlier. And soon-to-conclude “Parenthood” capped off the night for the Peacock net with a 2.6/ 4 at 10 p.m., which was equal to the year-ago evening.
Over at The CW, once dependable “The Vampire Diaries” has sprung a leak, with a 1.3/ 2 at 8 p.m. down by 13 percent and 19 percent, respectably, from one week earlier (1.5/ 2 on Oct. 23) and the year-ago evening (1.6/ 3 on 10/31/13). And sophomore “Reign” followed with a 0.9/ 1 at 9 p.m. (#5), which dipped by 25 percent from one year earlier (1.2/ 2 on 10/31/13).

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.
