Ratings Breakdown:
CBS got over the Wednesday “hump” in winning overnight fashion, besting second-place ABC and NBC by an average of 23 percent. But the home of “Modern Family,” ABC, should have no trouble narrowing the gap in all the key young adult demographics. The real question is how episode one of “Stalker” fared demographically.
In series-premiere news, crime solver “Stalker” on CBS won the 10 p.m. hour with a 6.0 rating/10 share in the overnights. Comparably, this was right on par with year-ago occupant “CSI,” which resulted in 9.66 million viewers and a 2.1 rating/6 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data. And overnight retention for “Stalker” out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “Criminal Minds” (7.5/12) was adequate at 80 percent. But given that most new series drop 10 to 20 percent in week two (see “Black-ish” on ABC below), time period dominance does not always warrant being labeled a “winner.” And this is actually a disappointing start – at least in the overnights – for “Stalker.” Let’s wait and see what the demos and DVR usage looks like.
The 10th season-premiere of the Eye net’s aforementioned “Criminal Minds,” now featuring Jennifer Love Hewitt, scored an overnight victory from 9-10 p.m. with a 7.5/12. Comparably, that topped the evening with minor growth of four percent from the 7.2/12 on the year-ago evening.
At 8 p.m. on CBS, meanwhile, was veteran “Survivor” at a solid 5.8/ 9, which was equal to last week’s 90-minute season-opener and six percent below the year-ago evening. The 5.8 in the overnights on Sept. 24 translated into 9.75 million viewers and a 2.7 rating/9 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data.
In week two news, ABC sitcom “Black-ish” dipped 20 percent in the overnights week-to-week, with a second-place 6.1/10 at 9:30 p.m. But this was still 11 percent above the series-premiere of failed year-ago occupant “Super Fun Night” (5.5/ 9 on 10/02/13). And the retention for “Black-ish” out of lead-in “Modern Family” (#2: 7.4/12) was still very promising at 82 percent. Two episodes in and it looks like ABC might have finally found something worth keeping out of “Modern Family.”
Earlier in the evening on ABC was “The Middle” (#3: 5.2/ 9) into compatible “The Goldbergs” (#3: 4.9/ 8), which bested failed year-ago occupant “Back in the Game” (4.7/ 8 on 10/02/13) by four percent. And “Nashville” capped off the night with a typical third-place 3.9/ 7 at 10 p.m., which was equal to its week-ago season-premiere (which only translated into a 1.5/ 5 rating in adults 18-49).
In episode three news, NBC Debra Messing drama “The Mysteries of Laura” remains a surprisingly positive total viewer entry, with a dominant 6.1/10 at 8 p.m. Comparably, that was just eight percent below its time period debut last week (6.6/11 on Oct. 1) and it beat year-ago occupant “Revolution” (3.9/ 7 on 10/02/13) by a hefty 56 percent. But, looking at the entire picture, that 6.6/11 in the overnights last week only translated into a 1.5/ 5 among adults 18-49 (with 10.01 million viewers overall), based on the Live + Same Day data. And NBC may not necessarily be a fan of “The Mystery of Laura’s” older audience skew. Remember the premature cancellation of similar appeal “Harry’s Law” with Kathy Bates in May 2012?
Next on NBC was veteran “Law & Order: SVU” at a third-place 5.3/ 8 at 9 p.m., which was eight percent above the 4.9/ 8 on the year-ago evening. And sophomore “Chicago PD” followed with a second-place 4.3/ 7 at 10 p.m., which was 19 percent below its 5.3/ 9 season opener one week earlier and 14 percent below the series debut of the failed revival of “Ironside” on the year-ago evening (5.0/ 9 on 10/02/13). Retention for “Chicago PD” out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “SVU” (5.4/ 8) was 80 percent.
On Fox, “Hell’s Kitchen” perked up a bit to a 3.1/ 5 (#4) at 8 p.m., which was 15 percent above the 2.7/ 5 one week earlier. But, versus year-ago occupant “The X Factor” (5.6/ 9 in the time period on 10/02/13), it was still down by a significant 45 percent. And it led into a 2.6/ 4 in the overnights at 9 p.m. for “Red Band Society” at 9 p.m. (#4), which equaled episode two one week earlier. And that translated into just 3.43 million viewers and a 1.1/ 3 among adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data.
Capping off the night were two encore telecasts of “Arrow” on The CW at a very non-competitive 0.6/ 1 from 8-10 p.m. Next week, look for the season premiere of “Arrow” into a repeat of the pilot episode of spin-off “The Flash” (which debuts next Tuesday).

It seems Black-ish is holding nicely behind MF.
ReplyDeleteHmm, I was hoping Stalker would do a little better.
ReplyDeleteTMoL is definitely Harry's Law 2.0
How can something be 'Dominat' and 'Dissapointing' at the same time?
ReplyDeleteBlack-ish is holding the way it can. Staker could do better and Red Band Society struggles more and more. Don't think it will last long. Considereing that Chicago PD is retaining 80% of SVU audience and it only dropped 19% percent, don't see a reason to be worried.
ReplyDeleteCPD might the most up and down show I read about. One week, it seems to be doing well, and the next week, not as much. I've long thought NBC should wrap up SVU and move it around to make way for something else, but considering how it's actually growing, it looks like I might have made a poor suggestion.
ReplyDeleteAs for TMOL, as long as it maintain its current demos, I think NBC will find a home for it. I'd love to see the network to try establish a Saturday block of programming. I wonder how expensive this show is and what sort of ratings it would need to get in order to work on a night like Saturday. Given that nobody programs there now, including NBC, wouldn't anything be a plus and add profit to the network?
By dominating the time slot it's in but not living up to expectations.
ReplyDeleteProbably cuz the numbers are "good", mostly cuz CBS has always a great audience, but it could have done way better.
ReplyDeleteQuite a drop for Black-ish but the other ABC comedies held pretty steady week to week.
ReplyDeleteStalker didn't do that great and it was terrible. Where was the stalking? It was a typical bland boring CBS show.
I hope they won't jump on bad conclusion for "Stalker" I really like it.. it seems promising !!
ReplyDeleteProfit implies that you care about costs as well. Sure NBC could probably collect a higher revenue from airing TML there but would the increase in revenue be enough to offset the increase in costs, which is probably close to zero right now since they only air repeats there?
ReplyDeleteI don't think Stalker did all that hot if even Mark is having doubts, he is usually the biggest pro-CBS person.
ReplyDeleteGoldbergs is fitting nicely after The Middle. Expectedly down for Black-ish but still worth keeping.
ReplyDeleteIn the case of Stalker, the fact that it is dominant may only mean that competition was weak and not really say much about the show's actual strength. The fact that it didn't build from year ago CSI is not very promising (if that's the way it ends up in the demos)
ReplyDelete@Edward, any metered market numbers from ABC Wednesday and CBS?
ReplyDeleteStalker's bigger problem is that it's fighting for a limited number of slots on the schedule. I believe CBS only has Battle Creek as a new show, but it still has to put on The Mentalist as well as a few comedies. And then there's next season. It's still early, but Scorpion looks like a keeper and I, for one, wouldn't be surprised to see Madam Secretary stick around. But with considering none of the NCIS shows and neither Blue Bloods nor H50 nor CM nor Survivor, and probably at least one of the CSIs and TGW are going to be back, it can't afford to be so so.
ReplyDeleteIndeed. My thinking on the matter is this: Saturday is like an unseeded field. Sometimes sports air there, but mostly, it's repeats. There's no additional cost to those repeats, but it's not like they are really all that well. If a show could generate around a 1.5, it'd be huge for that night. It'd also free up another slot during the week.
ReplyDeleteI know everyone focuses on younger viewers, for a reason, but you can always make money off of someone. It'd be nice to see a network not put a show about zombies or superheroes on Saturday night. Do two comedies like The Golden Girls, followed by an hour long show like TMOL or Parenthood, then followed by a news show like Dateline. I think it could work, if given enough time.
Good for Criminal Minds.
ReplyDeleteI'm interested in seeing the demos for ABC comedy block and Stalker.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how ABC, CBS and NBC did. Looks like ABC was pretty darn steady, even blackish, Criminal Minds premiered well. Stalker on the other hand....NBC did alright. I hope MOL kept its 1.5 while SVU and CPD are in the high 1's.
ReplyDeleteMF 3.5
ReplyDeleteBlackish 2.5
I guess with the changing landscapes of how and when people view tv, it now matters or at least in an analysis point of view it does
ReplyDeleteBig drop for Blackish!
ReplyDeleteAre those the final numbers?
ReplyDeleteFast nationals
ReplyDeleteYes, that's what I meant.
ReplyDeleteWe've got the numbers in the spreadsheet. Make sure you refresh
ReplyDeleteseriously stalker 2.0....deserve higher!

Huge drop for Black-sh. I guess people didn't like the pilot and fled.
ReplyDeleteNot great for Stalker. I was expecting better.
The Goldbergs continues to do great, it even rose three-tenths from it's lead-in. I still wish ABC had moved Trophy Wife to Wednesdays.
That's quite a big drop in half-hours for Nashville.
ReplyDeleteWinners: Modern Family, Criminal Minds, The Goldbergs
ReplyDeleteDisappointing: Stalker, The Middle, Black-ish
Losers: Red Band Society
Everything else: Meh
This being said, The Middle and Black-ish are some upwards adjustments away from grading solid to me, so it's still possible.
Wtf happened to The Middle -_- I don't want to see it go! it'd better be higher next week
ReplyDeleteMe, too. The pilot was actually good... maybe the bad reviews it got in advance?
ReplyDeleteWell Nikita was airing on the CW so you can't expect a 2.0 on the CW lol.
ReplyDeleteBut having a 2.0 on CBS for its pilot is... risky and not really that good but still, it's not a flop
Well when you see Modern Family hitting 3.5 and +....
ReplyDeleteNah, the problem is that SVU just isn't as strong as was 10 years ago and, despite seeing some increases, probably won't get that way again. It's kind of limiting how high CPD can go.
ReplyDeleteThat, and both shows are kind of...been there, done that, no? One of the reasons why I wanted NBC to move these shows is that they are sacrificing some valuable real estate.
That is an apple to orange comparison.
ReplyDeleteYes it is risky and overall not amazing (considering CBS numbers). Also I was expecting a better retention out of Criminal Minds. Anyway a 2.0 is not a bad start, let's see where it levels in next weeks.
ReplyDeleteI almost did it but it's actually a much better relative performance than last week. It's only 0.2 away from Chicago PD without the compatibility of an SVU lead-in.
ReplyDeletePoor RBS. Production will probably be halted either this week or next (2nd week of October was when FOX halted some last year).
ReplyDeleteI wonder if ABC will adjust up again.
It averaged I think a 2.0 or 2.1 last season so a 1.9 isn't bad. I hope it adjusts up though as its my favorite comedy.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could say I'm sorry for PD but I'm not! Producers are ruining both PD and Fire even if Fire is still doing well for now. Shay's death and now they are falling into the same old stories with PD. The partners secret relationship, the revenge stories... they promised original things but they are doing the old same stuff right now in PD... People are not stupid, if you lie to them promising things and then those things never happen they will stop watching the show! TV is full of cops show doing the same things over and over again so if you offer nothing new, since nothing different is gonna happen, people will prefer other show made better... They are lucky to have Sophia Bush in, she's very loved and followed on social media... that's why they are still not under 5 millions viewers. IMO PD can't resist an entire season... it barely did it with a mideason last year.
ReplyDeleteSorry for my english, I'm not american.
I hope Black-ish continue with this good numbers, the second episode was great and fun, this time the comedy part works much better.
ReplyDeleteThe Goldbergs is doing very well. If it adjusts up, it will only be off 4% of its season premiere! :)
ReplyDeleteNo matter what you think about Stalker but isn´t it a little too early to call it disappointing, especially if the potential drop in week two ist currently just a guess?
ReplyDeletePerhaps the negative reviewers on Stalker had some viewer choosing not to watch.......you know believing what the critic are saying
ReplyDeleteStalker's premiere ratings are a bit lower than most have expected. I expected at least 10 million and about 2.2 or 2.3 rating. I guess critics did play a major role in this. Refer to my review on first episode's review to see my "rant" about the show. I really hope people will have a second look at this.
ReplyDelete
