Note: Monday Night Football on ESPN last night featured the Washington Redskins at the Dallas Cowboys.
Minus “The Big Bang Theory,” which is back anchoring Thursday, CBS lost steam on Monday as expected. Week to week the network slipped by 14 percent in the household overnights. But the immediate positive news was just full season-renewed drama “Scorpion,” which was consistent at a third-place 7.0 rating/10 share from 9-10 p.m. despite the smaller support from lead-in “The Millers” (#3; 4.5/ 7 at 8:30 p.m.). Comparably, “Scorpion” built from “The Millers” by a hefty 55 percent, and it outdelivered a repeat of “The Big Bang Theory” (5.5/ 8) and an original installment of “Mom” (4.7/ 7) on the year-ago evening, on average, by 37 percent.
“The Millers,” unfortunately, dropped by 25 percent from its week-ago sophomore season-opener (6.0/ 9 on Oct. 20) because “The Big Bang Theory” was not anchoring the evening. And its retention out of lead-in “2 Broke Girls” was lacking at 79 percent. One year earlier, “2 Broke Girls” in the Monday 8:30 p.m. half-hour was 20 percent higher at a 5.4/ 8 (on 10/28/13).
In season-premiere news, “2 Broke Girls” returned to CBS with a third-place 5.7/ 9 at 8 p.m., which was 44 percent below the 10.2/16 in the household overnights for “The Big Bang Theory” one week earlier. But versus year-ago occupant “How I Met Your Mother,” which was always a favorite in the young demos, “2 Broke Girls” was consistent. And that itself is worthy of honorable mention.
The Eye net’s relocated “NCIS: Los Angeles” remains a vast improvement over failed year-ago occupant “Hostages,” with a 5.8/ 9 at 10 p.m. One year earlier, “Hostages” scored a 3.3/ 5 on 10/28/13.
Overall, ABC topped the night in the household overnights with its pairing of veteran “Dancing With the Stars” (#1: 8.8/13 from 8-10 p.m.), which dropped by just four percent from one year earlier, and “Castle” (#2: 5.9/10), which slipped by 13 percent. And NBC’s combination of “The Voice” (#2: 8.2/12 from 8-10 p.m.) and “The Blacklist” (#1: 6.4/10) owns the night in adults 18-49 and all the key young adult demographics.
Elsewhere, Fox slipped, on average, by five percent week to week with its pairing of “Gotham” (#4: 4.3/ 6 at 8 p.m.) and “Sleepy Hollow” (#4: 3.0/ 4 at 9 p.m.). But “Gotham” remains a solid choice in the key demos and both dramas continue to resonate via the DVR.
Week three of critically acclaimed (and full season-renewed) “Jane the Virgin” on The CW, unfortunately, lost steam, with a 0.9/ 1 in the household overnights from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, that was down by 10 percent from the 1.0/ 2 one week earlier. And that translated into 1.61 million viewers and a 0.6 rating/2 share among adults 18-49 (based on the Live + Same Day data). Comparably, however, “Jane the Virgin” was still 12 percent above year-ago time period occupant “Beauty and the Beast” (0.8/ 1 on 10/28/13). And the overnight retention for “Jane” out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of relocated lead-in “The Originals” (1.0/ 1) was 90 percent. Three week household overnight track for “Jane the Virgin”: 1.1/ 2 – 1.0/ 2 – 0.9/ 1.

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

Cool that Scorpion appears to have held, I am sure CBS is happy that it gave it a full season renewal now! And 2 Broke Girls doesn't appear too bad actually. The Millers of course appears horrendous but who expected something else?
ReplyDeleteOn the CW, it is getting kind of silly to read every week that TO did worse than Dixie when it's doing so much better than it is in the demo, he should at least acknowledge the vastly different skews. Jane dropping is not unexpected.

ReplyDeleteI will be forever bitter that CBS cancelled Friends with Better Lives and The Crazy Ones over this turkey. I am usually not one to hold grudges against shows like this but that's because networks are usually rational when doing their renewals and don't actively renew a show that's clearly weaker than shows that were cancelled.

ReplyDeleteJust like when How to be a Gentleman (owned by CBS) was axed after just 2 episodes in 2011. The Odd Couple or The McCarthys (Both Owned by CBS) could move into the 8:30 slot on Thursdays (CBS is an idiot switching back The Millers on Thursdays in midseason) unless Mom permanently stays there (which I hope happens)
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised Gotham didn't go up. It seemed like every ad during the World Series was for either Gotham or Sleepy Hollow. That aside, Gotham had a great episode last night.
ReplyDeleteIt really didn't. Excluding its last episode which aired in the summer on a very low viewed night surrounded by repeats, its last 5 episodes ratings were:

This was airing out of low rated 2 Broke Girls originals (very low 2s) or repeats, against the voice and in the low viewed spring. By comparison, The Millers
By comparison, despite airing against repeats on ABC and P&R on NBC, and leading out of 4s Big Bang Theory, The Millers was pulling 2.48 | 2.40 | 2.04 | 1.95 | 2.33.
It really doesn't look to me like the second show is stronger than the first, taking into account the completely different circumstances.
My guess is that Mike and Molly takes over on Mondays in January and The Millers does go back to Thursdays but Mom also stays there, as the McHarthys will be cancelled by then.

At least CBS seems to realize that Mom is a key to its future and will put that show behind TBBT on Thursdays. Right now, it's only temporary, but I'd bet that unless it somehow does far worse than TM at retaining TBBT's audience, it'll be there for the entire season. And if it picks up steam, I see it as a Thursday tentpole for the future, which is important, because then CBS can sandwich shows between it.

ReplyDeleteI've only seen one episode of TM and maybe two of 2BG, so maybe I've missed something, but 2BG, in my opinion, deserves the hate it gets. TM, on the other hand? Well, all of the hate for it seems overblown. Maybe it's the missed potential.
ReplyDeleteIt gets better with each episode. Problem is, the Nolan series really spoiled people into thinking Gotham (and the characters in it) can only be portrayed in one particular way.

ReplyDeleteAs far as quality, the show is great. It's a beautifully-shot, intriguing, character-driven cop procedural. After a few episodes you don't even care that Batman is not actually present in the series. Actually if Batman was in the series it would take away from the plot, in my opinion.

ReplyDeleteI don't think there is ever going to be one of these "most hyped shows of the summer" shows that doesn't result in the "disappointing" narrative to some degree. It's just impossible. If promotion and hype work as well as they are supposed to be, a lot of people will check it out. By definition, it won't appeal to all those people, so all those people will be disappointed. It's just the natural cycle of things.
ReplyDeleteThe long running argument has been that since CBS owns TM they will want to get it to syndication, but with these numbers I doubt that will happen.
ReplyDeleteSupposedly, WB decided declared that its superhero properties can't have a lot of jokes and/or need to be uber-serious, or something along those lines. I remember reading that when Guardians of the Galaxy came out.
ReplyDeleteIf that's true, then it's completely ridiculous. TDKR was just a bit too bleak for my tastes. But more than anything, it kind of limits what a director/producer might be able to do with tones and so on.
To me it has a lot to do with missed potential, yes. It has incredible actors in it that I usually adore and it's just dull in my opinion, wasting that incredible cast. To top it off, it requires most of those actors to not appear regularly on other gigs they have and in which I adore them (Beau Bridges in Masters of Sex, Margo Martindale in The Americans).
ReplyDeleteThe other reason is ratings to me. I don't think I remember a show being renewed without clearly earning it. People can hate all they want on Men, 2 Broke Girls, etc but those shows always had the ratings to be renewed, they pulled their own weight. The Millers? When did it do so? It was a guinea pig last year bleeding big bang's audience. And there were stronger comedies on the network (which yes I happened to really like) that were cancelled instead of it. So while not entirely rational, that also contributes to me having problems with that show.
I agree. I also think Mom will have to take the 9pm Thursday position as soon as this season when Men ends since The Millers clearly can't do it and I doubt they want to launch The Odd Couple there. Mom is a great comedy, that's something that I am happy that CBS is supporting!

ReplyDeleteOh, I know that argument, and if there was less of a problem with the numbers, that argument would make sense. But Mom is a good show that could take off if a few things go the right away. CBS needs another comedy anchor, so it make sense that they'd switch up Mom and TM in order to, among other things, get one. If for some reason they cancel TM, they can always put another show
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that's just gossip. Nolan's movies were more bleak because that's the approach he wanted. And TDKR ended with a complete happily ever after ending anyway. For Gotham, there are jokes and things of a light nature.

I am sure that CBS would be willing to put up with the ugly numbers for a couple more years or so if they had a guaranteed deal but which cable network will really go the distance for something like this that would justify not one, but two more full seasons? It's a big test of the syndication reach.

Mike & Molly would probably go after 2 Broke Girls and The Millers would get the 9:30 timeslot on Thursdays and be burned off there until it gets enough episodes for syndicationin a couple of years

ReplyDeleteI agree. But damn is CBS really going to sacrifice the 9h30 Thursday slot (and implicitly the 10pm slot as well) as syndication farms? They already do it with Friday and Sunday. Pretty soon it will be half of their schedule if they go down that route.
ReplyDeleteI don't see how they can keep TM there for another year. I assume they will need to move Elementary to a weekend night to launch something there and they certainly cannot expect to do so with a The Millers lead-in. It would be like when ABC tried to launch 3 new dramas out of Trophy Wife.
I am sure that they can sell The Millers someplace, but what I doubt is that it will be a deal that is valuable enough to offset all the losses that The Millers will imply for them until then.

ReplyDeleteWell the show did make good ads sells last year even if it was only because of TBBT, so as long as it doesn't lose too much money on the ads sells I think it can still give CBS some extra bucks for the syndication money. However, I think any other show could have done this task much better, but this is the only reason why I can think The Millers still exist today; CBS wasn't so patient with How to be a Gentlemen which pulled the exact same numbers The Millers did last season and with a relatively lower rated- at the time- TBBT

ReplyDeleteHow to Be a Gentlema had far worse relative ratings than The Millers so I don't think that's a fair comparison. I am sure CBS still had some standards, even if very low, when renewing the millers.
ReplyDeleteAs for the ad rates ,I wouldn't read too much into them since the adds were sold assuming the show would be following TBBT on Thursdays the whole season. The Monday arrangement wasn't announced so the prices we are seeing aren't the actual values being transactioned for sure.
I think CBS is starting to go into the syndication farming business; they make a lot of procedurials and comedies that are easier sells to syndication than your usual serialized show.
ReplyDeleteThey could gather great ratings if they were more daring and generated a lot of buzz for some of their shows, but CBS is the least bold network I've ever seen; as far as I've seen they are not in the business of taking risk, but rather sticking with what they have and make the best out of it, even if it's not the best approach.
If they have to launch something out of The Millers on Thursdays at 10, it will have to be something with a lot of buzz or it's going to be dead against How to get away with Murder
If 2 Broke Girls numbers hold or go up then we are seeing a Frozen boost like effect on the show, only this time with Kim Kardashian... that's good for the show, but also quite sad
ReplyDeleteOne thing that has not been spoken of all that much, but is definitely a consideration, is that the stock of repeats for cable (and, I guess, streaming services) is slowly but surely drying up. Now that older shows like Modern Family, The Middle, and Parks are all in syndication, and shows like New Girl will be soon, what else is left? You've got hits like TBBT cranking out new shows, of course, but aside from what, what is there?
ReplyDeleteI mention this because, unless a network is faced with an overabundance of shows (and only CBS could possibly qualify here), I can see them being more patient, especially if they own the show.
There was an article about this in the last few months, by the way, although I can't remember where I read it.
Those are really good numbers for the show considering what it did on spring. Now the real test is next week; if it holds then the show can anchor Mondays for a while

ReplyDeleteI think The Millers can still make some money unless it starts doing low 1s; it's not going to be a lot- hell, it may be just barely enough to cover its cost-, but if I'm right and CBS wants to syndicate the show really badly, then that would be enough for them...
That said, however, seeing the early top markets I wouldn't be surprised if The Millers start doing 1.2s starting next week. If so, then the show should be cancelled; CBS can't be that desperate to burn it off to syndication... or can it? It's a head scratcher

ReplyDeleteI think Elementary could get moved, but it depends on what else the schedule needs. An obvious candidate for slot could be Scorpion. I don't see them making a big move of any of the Tuesday shows, and there's not much else that would make sense there. I wonder if they end Elementary early this season and then try Battle Creek in the slot.
I also have that dilemma. I kind of hope it does drop just to see what happens from a purely academical point of view. These type of situations interest me.

ReplyDeleteI agree that once they had decided to go with 3 hours of comedy FWBL was not in the running but I disagree with it not doing enough for renewal. It did more than The Millers and I don't think it did less than Mom. It had a tough situation and did as well as could be expected IMO. It could grow. CBS executives claiming that they renewed TM instead of it because that one is a family comedy so they saw more potential with the stories instead of FWBL which was a hangout comedy is just ridiculous when we all know it was because of syndication and them owning the Millers.

The pilot got stellar reviews and people were going to be disappointed if they expected a Batman show. The show is a little bit uneven but it has gotten better with each episode. Gotham is a lot better and less disappointing than AoS was last year.

But Castle rated perfectly fine against Blacklist all last season which is why I think Blacklist never really affected Castle and Affairs is more dangerous

Honestly Castle has been able to hold up against a million shows in its 7 seasons. Really dnt think this one will affect any more.
ReplyDeleteLA looks good, I don't see the problem. It has the most competition out of any 10pm show and the this week it will probably have the lowest Monday-Wednesday lead-in. Yet, its numbers are still pretty much the same.

ReplyDeleteThere are very few shows nowadays that break a 3 rating anyway, I'd say Gotham numbers would be good on any other network, but they also look better on FOX. Considering there are plenty of shows struggling with their numbers you should be happy that Gotham is doing good and that it seems that it has found a stable audience

2 Broke Girls pulled its own weight on adults 18-34, a very good return showing that the show skews enough young eyeballs.
Gotham still doing amazing on the 18-34 demo, it can be considered a hit there.
It always surprises me that DWTS has a good subset of 18-34 people watching it.

ReplyDeleteIt's all starting again: Emily Owens, The Carrie Diaries, Reign, Jane The Virgin!!! I really hope JVT to get better numbers and that CW considers that it airs on a Monday, had great reviews on press and that the show is funny and adorable!!!
I think Scorpion is their strongest drama since POI actually. Elementary was never that strong in its opening year I think.

ReplyDeleteOn a different note: I wonder why is it that women watch more TV than men does. Checking out the skews, most show skew larger female audiences. Even The Blacklist, which I was sure skew male, has more women watching it.

ReplyDeleteThere's a difference between being more serious and not having jokes at all. Like Winger said TDKR had a happy ending and Arrow, Gotham and The Flash (especially) all have jokes. The Flash is very light compared to all the other DC stuff.

ReplyDeleteYes, I'm from Brazil, so we are used to watch soap operas and we watch other ones special from Mexico and Venezuela (where they based the story of JTV), so for me, it's natural to watch and like it, it's in our culture. But, there, in the US, I don't know much about their taste and I thought many people would reject it before watch, but I was really surprised about some comments I saw online, from the audience and from the press!!! I always get attached with shows that I know will get canceled or will be on the bubble for a long time....kkkkk
ReplyDeleteThe only shows on broadcast that skew male this season so far are the FOX Sunday comedy block (all four of them), all the comic book shows except for Constantine (Agents of Shield, Arrow, The Flash and Gotham) and The 100. There is also 60 Minutes if you want to count it but I am pretty sure that's just an effect of being sports lead-out on so many nights.

They didn't have much choice, it didn't totally bomb out of the gate and with BatB,Messngers,Izomnbie not ready to air they didn't want to have holes in thier schedule.They were also thrilled about its critical acclaim and bringing in different viewers
