Ratings Breakdown:
The San Diego Chargers vs. the Denver Broncos lifted “Thursday Night Football” on CBS to an above average 11.4 rating/19 share in the household overnights from 8:30-11:30 p.m. (peaking in the 9 p.m. half-hour at an 11.8/19). Comparably, this is 20 percent above the 9.5/16 in the overnights one week earlier for the New York Jets at the New England Patriots (and that translated – with coverage on the NFLN — into 16.09 million viewers and a 5.4 rating/17 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data).

Earlier in the evening on CBS was the NFL Kick-off at a 6.4/11 (#2) in the 8 p.m. half-hour. As a reminder, results for any live sporting event are approximate.

Next Thursday, “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS returns to the 8 p.m. half-hour, followed by the season-premieres of relocated “Mom” and the final season of “Two and a Half Men” from 8:30-9:30 p.m. Next will be the series-premiere of sitcom “The McCarthys” at 9:30 p.m., followed by the season-premiere of drama “Elementary” at 10 p.m.

Despite the stronger football presence, ABC was on par from one week earlier with its solid combination of Shonda Rhimes dramas “Grey’s Anatomy” (#2: 6.7/11), “Scandal” (#2: 7.4/12) and recently introduced “How To Get Away With Murder” (#2: 7.4/13), which was 12 percent above former Thursday 10 p.m. occupant “Scandal” on the year-ago evening (6.6/11 on 10/24/13). Relocated “Grey’s Anatomy,” meanwhile, was 148 percent above failed year-ago occupant “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” (2.7/ 4 on 10/24/13). In other words, ABC is poised for the largest improvement with regularly scheduled programming on Thursday this season.

NBC, which was flat from one week earlier, finished in the distant No. 3 spot with its line-up of “The Biggest Loser” (#3t, 2.8/ 4), sitcoms “Bad Judge” (#3: 3.1/ 5) and “A To Z” (#3t, 2.2/ 3) and the final season of “Parenthood” (#3: 2.7/ 4). While the arrival of “The Blacklist” to the Thursday 9 p.m. hour in February will surely ignite interest, as it stands NBC just cannot compete on Thursday.

In episode four news, Fox crime drama “Gracepoint” scored a 2.2/ 3 at 9 p.m. (#4), which was flat from one week earlier despite airing out of a repeat of “Bones” (#3t, 2.8/ 4 at 8 p.m.). But that 2.2 rating translated into only 3.70 million viewers and a 0.8 rating/2 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data.

On The CW, veteran “The Vampire Diaries” remains on the downside this season, with a 1.5/ 2 in the overnights at 8 p.m. (#5) off by 17 percent from the 1.8/ 3 on the year-ago evening. And it let into a mere 0.9/ 1 for sophomore “Reign” at 9 p.m., which slipped by 36 percent year-to-year.
