Ratings Breakdown:
The Big 3 dominated the Monday household overnights once again, with first-place ABC besting No. 2 NBC and No. 3 CBS by 4 and 11 percent, respectively. But the home of “The Voice,” NBC, is a lock for dominance in all the key young adult demos and CBS remains the most improved.
In season-premiere news, sophomore CBS sitcom “The Millers,” now featuring Sean Hayes, opened with a third-place 6.0 rating/9 share in the household overnights at 8:30 p.m. Comparably, that was 18 percent above the 5.1/ 8 for year-ago occupant “2 Broke Girls.” But the overnight retention for “The Millers” out of “The Big Bang Theory” (#1 for the night: 10.2/16 at 8 p.m.) was weak at 59 percent. And airing out of “2 Broke Girls” effective next Monday will certainly cause slippage. While no one expects any show to hold the majority of a lead-in as strong as “Big Bang,” below 60 percent is not a positive.
CBS would be wise to keep returning “Mom” out of “The Big Bang Theory” on Thursday all season.
Next on CBS was episode five of drama “Scorpion,” which rose to a 7.2/11 (#3) from 9-10 p.m. and is a shoo-in for a full season renewal. Although “Scorpion” minus the “Big Bang Theory” anchor support next week (and beyond) could also lose steam, overnight growth of 20 percent from “The Millers” last night is a positive worth noting. Yes, BH…”Scorpion” looks like a definite keeper!
Relocated “NCIS: Los Angeles” closed the night for the Eye net with a third-place 5.7/ 9 at 10 p.m., which was a hefty 63 percent above failed year-ago occupant “Hostages” (3.5/ 6 on 10/21/13). First in the hour was NBC’s “The Blacklist” at a 6.3/10, which was seven percent below the 6.8/12 one year earlier. And second was “Castle” at a 5.8/10, which slipped year-to-year by 16 percent. Despite the minor losses, 10 p.m. on Monday is a rare example of a time period where all three scripted dramas are working.
On ABC, “Dancing With the Stars,” featuring guest co-host Leah Remini, scored an 8.8/13 from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, that was just four percent below the 9.2/14 on the year-ago evening. Competing “The Voice” on NBC also had some year-to-year slippage (down five percent), but an 8.1/12 from 8-10 p.m. is still a rock-solid performance that should translate into a high 3-rating among adults 18-49.
In week two news, “Jane the Virgin” on The CW scored a 1.0/ 2 at 9 p.m. (#5), which was nine percent below the 1.1/ 2 one week earlier. And that translated into 1.61 million viewers and a 0.6 rating/2 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data. But this was still 25 percent above year-ago occupant “Beauty and the Beast” (0.8/ 1 on 10/21/13), and the overnight retention out of relocated “The Originals” (#5: 1.1/ 2) was 91 percent. Note to The CW: please be patient. Usual “Jane the Virgin” is a show worth keeping.
“The Originals,” meanwhile, was equal to year-ago occupant “Hart of Dixie.”
On Fox, full season-renewed “Gotham” was on the overnight map with a 4.6/ 7 from 8-9 p.m., which was just four percent below the 4.8/ 7 one week earlier (which resulted into a 2.4/ 7 among adults 18-49). And it led into a 3.2/ 5 at 9 p.m. (#4) for sophomore “Sleepy Hollow,” which held 70 percent of the “Gotham” lead-in. Given the stellar reported DVR usage for “Gotham,” consider it a “winner.”

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

That was predictable for The Millers...
ReplyDeleteDespite this, CBS is gong to drag The Millers for 4 full seasons for syndication. That show is garbage and I doubt Sean Hayes, playing the same character as always, added anything to it.

And "full-season renewed" is not really a term.
If The Millers grows on 2BG next week, it should be safe for 3 & 4 since CBS owns it. If it falls apart, I think CBS needs to keep there and give Mom a chance to grow after TBBT. Is that too much to ask?

ReplyDeleteLol about the millers, this was so predictable. And I still think it will struggle to even hit a 1.5 out of 2 broke Girls. NBC will have a field day with this.
ReplyDeleteElsewhere, everything looks quite decent actually. Scorpion appears to have held up very well which are great news for CBS. I also hope TO didn't fall, it appears to have held.

ReplyDeleteI agree wholeheartedly. I think it's hard to make a case for The Crazy Ones somehow but Friends with Better lives was getting comparable numbers to The Millers with a lead-in half of its size and double the competition. It's quite ridiculous.

ReplyDeleteI am pretty sure Mom will never leave Thursdays again this year. CBS will probably just put Mike and Molly after 2 Broke Girls and rearrange The Millers on Thursdays once it cans The McHarthys at Christmas.

ReplyDeleteI caught an episode for the first time last night and liked it, but wow, that demo drop is really something. I imagine this temporary switch between Mom and TM will become permanent, despite CBS owning TM. It might go back to four hours of comedy at some point, but right now, it's at six and Thursdays appear to be the focus. It needs something to work, and I could see Mom moving up to 9:00 next season if it clicks.

ReplyDeleteYou know, I remember Will Arnett being on Conan this past summer, and he was asked about everything he was involved in, right down to that cartoon on Netflix about a depressed horse. Everything, that is, except TM on CBS.
No I mean the year. It looks modern, but in last nights ep Bruce had one of the old box TVs.

ReplyDeleteI do not know but in any case remember that passive repeat viewing is a different beast than actual originals viewing. It sometimes is a good indicator (for instance The Goldbergs regularly building on the middle this summer) but sometimes it isn't (for instance Mike and Molly is regularly the best CBS comedy in repeats not named big bang theory and often one of the non-freshman lower rated ones in originals)

ReplyDeleteI know I harp on this a lot, but CBS is leaving a lot of openings for a network to establish a comedy block on Mondays. If I were NBC, and I needed a spot, I'd seriously consider launching one at 9:30. it's worth it to take the temporary hit to TV, at least for one cycle, to see if it clicks. If so, it might be a good option for them going forward.
ReplyDeleteI remember the days when NBC used to rule Thursdays, but who says a comedy block needs to go there? And if CBS can replace NBC as the Thursday comedy king, why can't NBC replace CBS on Mondays?

ReplyDeleteI know. I'm just saying that if it showed some positive results from its run on TBS, perhaps we could expect something good to happen on CBS.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, if any network should do it would be ABC, not NBC. Two main reasons:
ReplyDelete1) The Voice is a much more valuable property to cut hours from than DWTS is
2) There is a strong veteran at 10pm, while NBC will have a freshman show there, which means lead-in support is much more important there
3) They are already using the voice to prop up comedies on Tuesdays, so Mondays should be reserved for drama. ABC, on the other hand, has nothing supporting the Tuesday comedies, which aren't working.
I am not saying I want this to happen but maybe doing DWTS | DWTS + Fresh off the Boat | Castle in the spring wouldn't be such a bad idea.
Those are top 25 markets, which will most likely see adjustment when the prelims are released in a little over an hour.
ReplyDeleteGood point. Still, exposure is key. I'm fairly certain it ran after TBBT a few nights a week on TBS, and given how dominated that network's schedule is by TBBT, that had to give the show some new eyeballs. I wouldn't expect it to pull a Seinfeld after Cheers move and build on the show, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it hold more of TBBT's audience and, over time, get better and better at it. For CBS, that would be huge, because it could then have another comedy anchor and, over time, something to build another show.

ReplyDeleteOh I agree 100%. And in the case of Mom it's even more relevant since it was never sampled in a big way anyway partially because its lead-ins were always fairly modest.

That's a good idea, too. And if it works for ABC, I could see the network pairing the show with, say, Cristela.
ReplyDeleteBut I still think it makes sense for NBC to try it. I think it's worth the risk. It needs to get something, anything, working with comedy, and TV won't be around forever. If SOA looks at all like it might be able to work on its own, it should take the plunge. The worst case scenario is that SOA gets good reviews but needs more time to grow its audience. In that case, NBC can work on scheduling the show during the summer to get it more eyeballs.
According to Heller, it's a mix of different eras, so a little bit of the past, and a little bit of the present.

ReplyDeleteGood point re TOC. One possible solution is to air a repeat of TBBT at 9:00, or maybe 9;30 to give Elementary a boost. If I were scheduling CBS and I saw Mom working behind TBBT, I'd leave well enough alone until at least the middle of next season. At that point, I could see it moving into an anchor spot.
Not that this means anything, but I remember thinking last year that CBS would be wise to air the show behind TBBT. Now it looks like they are doing that.

ReplyDeleteIt's possible (maybe even a bit probable), that the cancellation of The Crazy Ones was one (of several) contributing factors to Robin Williams eventual suicide. What if The Crazy Ones had never been cancelled? We'll never know...

ReplyDeleteGotham actually rose!! Going by the early markets, I guess between 2.6-2.7 or even the 2.8! Also glad Sleepy Hollow is steady, guessing a 3rd season is all but certain at this point?
ReplyDeleteTwo and a Half Men is premiering next week, so it's only missing out on the first 5 weeks of the season. Meanwhile, last year, even ending early, How I Met Your Mother still repeated 4 times. And that was with a 24 episode season. If Men has a regular 22 episode season, it could finish a week earlier than Mother did or at the same time if it runs repeat free.

ReplyDeleteNo, the worst case scenario is that NBC ruins any positive momentum that SOA may have in favour of a non promising comedy. It's quite a risky move and frankly I don't think it's worth it. Tuesdays work just for that .

ReplyDeleteAlthough I appreciate the top-25 numbers, they can still vary greatly from the actual 18-49s, especially for networks that skew younger such as CW and Fox.

I keep hoping that The Millers crashes and burns soon. Then that would mean Margo Martindale would be free to return full time as Claudia on The Americans.

How I Met Your Mother finished on 31/03, so it's the exact same week. Additionally, if the McHarhys is really a flop, they can double pump Men on the December airings and get Odd Couple on the air by early March.

ReplyDeleteToo much schedule shifting. NBC needs to get a comedy hit on Tuesday before they even consider adding comedies to Monday. Marry Me's ratings were disappointing. Time to try something else there midseason (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt?)

ReplyDeleteI don't think MM's ratings were disappointing. Not huge, but it wasn't a 1.5. I'm curious to see how it holds up this week and how much it adds in the +3 and +7 ratings.
ReplyDeleteMy point is that there's a wide open space on Mondays. omabin said ABC could fill it with comedies, and that makes sense. But I think NBC could. I doubt UKS will be bad, and if it clicks at all, it could be the start of a new option for them. They'll have a few weeks of SOA to see how well it holds up. If it does, I really think it's worth trying. NBC can take the temporary hit on Mondays. It'll get a big boost on Thursdays, both at 9:00 and 10;00 with TB and Allegiance. And it will get another show to add to the ratings mix if a comedy did well at 9:30. Plus, as I said, if it stinks, it can always pull the show after a few weeks and extend TV. Any sort of momentum that was lost from SOA would return.
While that's true, once you learn to account for those, I really find them useful. I love to have them and I think they are a muuuuuuch better indicator than the HH numbers. I really appreciate Ed taking the time to share them with us.

Tuesday is a wide open slot too. New Girl and Mindy aren't even competition anymore. Shrinking The Voice reminds me of Fox's failed experiment with American Idol and Surviving Jack last Spring.

ReplyDeleteMarry Me may not be a "disappointment" yet, but I would say About A Boy's 1.7 premier is pretty disappointing. That's lower than the premier of cancelled Growing Up Fisher.
ReplyDeleteAt this point if About A Boy follows last years trajectory it should be burned off somewhere else on the schedule. Marry Me can shift to 9:30 with NBC's strongest midseason comedy pilot getting the plum 9:00pm post-Voice slot.

ReplyDeleteI hate hating on TV shows (pun non intended), but The Millers gets on my nerves a bit. It's sort of irrational, I don't even know how to justify it properly. I tried watching the show and I watched like 4 or 5 episodes of it but I just couldn't. I think my problem is how much talented is involved there and how much it is all a waste. Margo Martindale, Beau Bridges and Will Arnett are all incredible actors that are just wasted on that show.
ReplyDelete100% agree that they are much more helpful than the HH numbers. The top-25 are usually spot on for the big 3 though, ABC/CBS/NBC.
ReplyDeleteGotham had a higher Top 25 number last week so it may not have increased week to week.
ReplyDeleteI think they tend to undervalue CBS quite a lot. IMO, young skewing shows tend to be overvalued and older skewing shows (NBC and especially CBS) tend to be undervalued .
ReplyDeleteI am enjoying both right now, though yeah, TO is probably still my favorite right now. But TVD really managed to turn things around. I was really unhappy with how last year (and the year before for the most part) went, and last year I actually left most of the season to binge watch during the holidays since it wasn't really captivating me, but this year I am really happy with the show again!
ReplyDeleteAbout a Boy is premiering its sohpmore season, not freshman season, so the comparison really isn't that fair, especially because Fisher had had tones of Olympic promos by then. Additionally, Boy itself was a higher lead-in (and more compatible probably) to Fisher than Marry Me was to Boy. It came back up from its finale and was actually higher rated than its last 4 episodes, three of which had the direct voice lead-in. I say that's acceptable and not much else should have been expected.
ReplyDeleteAdditionally, this year it is expected to fall less than last year because it is a sophomore, so its audience should be more settled in already, as opposed to what happens with a freshman show in which people are still sampling it in opening weeks to see if they like it or not.
Jane went up to a 0.7. I did not see this one coming.

The Blacklist is down by quite a bit. It's still strong, but I don't think it being down this far, is a good sign for Thursdays or State of affairs in 3 weeks.

ReplyDeleteBeauty and the Beast and Hart of Dixie were never meant to air outside of Fridays or Summer, so they are not a problem. One of the midseason dramas will replace The 100 since that one has a limited order. But scheduling the second one, if Jane really keeps this, will be a challenge, I agree.

ReplyDeleteThe problem isn't even premiere. I think the premiere itself will be okayish. But what happens after the 5 episodes it gets to follow (the lowest rated portion) of the voice? It goes on hiatus so soon for two and a half months? Or it airs after some low rated/ filler show against Castle and LA? It's a loose-loose situation.

ReplyDeleteI don't think Reigns doing quite badly enough to be pulled and burned off in summer and airing in summer means less Viewrs,lower ad rates,lower international liscening fees and could confuse viewers.

ReplyDeleteThey've never brought it back so soon. A month and a half of hiatus only is crazy. They will burn the voice to the ground if they continue to do this. Last year we all complained that it was too soon when they brought it back at the end of February. So will they really bring it back on the beginning of February?
I adore Reign but the show is doing terribly.
ReplyDeleteIt's not high, but the show was never pulling 4.0s last season. It seems right in the range of what it was doing last season and doing this season. NCIS: LA is proving to be much better in the slot than Hostages. Not huge competition, but not nothing, either.

I'm curious to see how much more they make the show serialized, if at all. They'll have a nice break to work on some new stuff, won't they?

ReplyDeleteYeah, disapointing - it´s even the 1st time that NCIS:LA does better than Castle (I haven´t watched last night´s episode, but the majority of the comments I read say it was boring, maybe the 2nd half hour was very low).
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I always expected this season to be its last (and with this kind of ratings it probably will be), so I promised myself to not care about demos and just enjoy it!:)
Maybe he meant not right after, but just specifically after February 2, whether that is February 3 or at the end of the month.

ReplyDeleteI don't think this will be Castle's last season at all, unless there are big contract issues with the actors that I am not aware off. Its ratings, even at this disappointing level, are still perfectly fine for a renewal.

ReplyDeleteYou should not be surprised by Jane's ratings. It's the same pattern with ABC' Cristela: broadcast networks are slowly testing latino-oriented scripted shows (did they finally understand why Univision became much more popular in recent years in the 18-49 demos?).

ReplyDeleteThe show creatively has gotten better this season. It's less action-packed, but the character development has improved. I'm hoping it still rises for the midseason finale like it did last year.
ReplyDeleteAs I said above, I wonder if TBL producers will use the break as a way to relaunch the show to some degree, moving away from the case of the week stuff to some degree and more to the overall mystery, government-conspiracy stuff.
ReplyDeleteThe Millers is quite a cursed show: it keeps on loosing half the demo from its leadin, and the lead out alway grows out with bigger numbers. CBS execs must be really obsessed with this show.

ReplyDeleteI believe it is starting the Monday after the Superbowl. IMO that's not such a bad thing. They can use the momentum generated from the Superbowl to boost the Voice and all of their premiers that week.
ReplyDeleteBatB wasn't pulled til it had nothing but 0.3,under a million Viewrs constantly that season and had no room for itt once WL,SC,The 100 Cult didn't get pulled and moved to summer til it hit 0.1 .Reigns not doing great but it's not as bad as Cult or BatB yet.
ReplyDeleteJtV is kind of based off telenoavela - a Latin American television soap opera. So it's different and isn't pretending to be something it's not. It's not for everyone. I don't really like the telenoavela feel, it's weird, but I still want to watch for a while, see where it goes.

ReplyDeleteMy biggest issue with the show is that the case of the week stuff could get very old very quickly. Not everything has to be so serialized and/or confusing as hell, like things became with Alias, but out of the episodes I saw last year, the best were the one with Anslo Garrick, which was a two parter. Lots of action, but it wasn't confined to one episode. I think they'll run out of villains sooner rather than later. I'd also like to see a villain or two return, if possible.
ReplyDeleteJosef Adilian of Vulture had good things to say about the show, saying it had believable characters and didn't try to make them all sarcastic or completely sweet, and that it was trying something different from other shows. It made me want to check it out.

You are right. Castle does enough for abc standards. This year renewal will probably depend more on the willingness of lead actors to continue more than ratings imo.

ReplyDeleteI think all of that will happen. It's been confirmed that The Blacklist will have a few 2 part episodes this season. Also people seem to like the case of the week style. It's why CBS shows do so well for the long term.

They kept the arrangement through the season, but the comedy ended up being cancelled and AI's ratings just sank. But AI was already sinking so I'm not sure how much the comedy affected that.

Congrats to TO and Jane for giving the CW a strong, steady night. Even if Jane drops, Monday's are still better than they've been in years. I really don't need TO to start dropping though. I want them to maintain. This is a surprisingly good combo for CW Monday nights.
ReplyDeleteAs for the Blacklist, I'm getting a little tired of the false advertisement and bait and switch promo's. I didn't even watch last night. Until I read a spoiler that tells me what's behind that door, I'm not going to watch because at this point, I just don't care enough.
I am so happy Sleepy Hollow rose. I love the new addition of Hawley but not at the expense of Jenny screen time. Get on that writers.

ReplyDeleteI don't have anything against the Jane or Xiomara, they were lovely in the premier. But the voiceovers, the other characters and the way they told the story was underwhelming. Not a fan, awful was maybe a to strong word but it wasn't compelling at all to me.
