But these metered markets are an indication of what could lie ahead, and there is no way to put a positive spin on the opening overnights for ABC comedies “Selfie” and “Manhattan Love Story.”
CBS, as expected, topped this second Tuesday of the new TV season in the overnights, and the home of “The Voice,” NBC, is a lock for leadership in adults 18-49 (and all key young adult demos). The Eye net’s veteran “NCIS” was top-rated for the evening, with an 11.7 rating/19 share at 8 p.m. Comparably, that was six percent above the 11.0/18 for the season-premiere one week earlier (which translated into 18.23 million viewers and a 2.9 rating/10 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data).
Next on CBS was episode two of “NCIS: New Orleans” at a dominant 10.3/16 at 9 p.m., which bested year-ago occupant “NCIS: Los Angeles” (9.5/15 on 10/01/13) by eight percent and maintained 98 percent of its 10.5/16 debut one week earlier. Yes…”NCIS: New Orleans” is a hit. And capping off the night for CBS was drama “Person of Interest” at a dominant 6.7/11 at 10 p.m., which dipped by 19 percent from the 8.3/15 on the year-ago evening. Competing “Chicago Fire” on NBC (#2: 5.5/ 9), which was equal from both one week and one year earlier, is a lock for leadership in the key demos.
“The Voice” on NBC, meanwhile, scored a healthy 9.0/14 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m., which was six percent above the 8.5/13 one week earlier. And now onto ABC…
Sitcom “Selfie” launched with a distant third-place 3.7/ 6 in the overnights at 8 p.m., leading into the debut of “Manhattan Love Story” at a 3.2/ 5 at 8:30 p.m. – also a far No. 3. And the two comedies, on average, trailed year-ago occupant “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” (5.6/ 9 on 10/01/13) by a hefty 38 percent and the week-ago live “Dancing With the Stars” Results Show (7.0/11 on Sept. 23) by 51 percent. Since most new series drop in the vicinity of 10 to 20 percent in week two, this is a stalled at the gate start for both comedies.
Next on ABC was relocated “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” at a 3.2/ 5 from 9-10 p.m., which was 16 percent below the 3.8/ 6 one week earlier (which translated into 5.98 million viewers and a 2.1/ 6 among adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data). Keep in mind that the “SHIELD” sophomore season opener increased to 8.9 million viewers (+2.92 million) and a 3.2 in adults 18-49 (+52 percent), based on the Live + 3 Day data. The DVR usage is significant.
Capping off ABC’s night was episode three of drama “Forever” at a third-place 3.9/ 7 at 10 p.m., which decreased by seven percent from the 4.2/ 7 in the overnights for its time period debut one week earlier. Compared to failed year-ago occupant “Lucky 7” (2.0/ 4 on 10/01/13), this was still a rise of 95 percent, however.
Elsewhere, the Tuesday results remain challenging for Fox, which cannot compete with its combination of “Utopia” (#4: 1.7/ 3 – tick, tock, the cancellation clock is ticking) and sitcoms “New Girl” (#4: 2.0/ 3) and “The Mindy Project” (#4: 1.8/ 3). And The CW populated the evening with part two of low-rated special, iHeartradio Music Festival, which scored a mere 0.7/ 1 from 8-10 p.m. Next Tuesday on The CW will feature the series-debut of “The Flash” and the season-premiere of long-running “Supernatural.”

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

ReplyDeleteManhattan Love Story bombed but I'll wait on the demos for Selfie. Compared to Mixology, it premiered on par with it but that may not be enough for a full season, let alone a 2nd season.
ReplyDeleteI want to personally slap the person responsible for delaying Agents of SHIELD from hitting Netflix. The show has gotten SO much better but people who quit watching in early S1 are probably gone for good.

ReplyDeleteI've yet to watch yesterday's episode of AoS (trying not to step on a spoilery mine over here!), but anyway, I hope the HH slippage doesn't translate into a lower demo. The show really can't afford to drop beneath, say, 1.8, its low so far. I know HH numbers tend to not mean squat, but anyway, I'll be worried over here until I see the demo. It's really annoying, too, that the show has to rely on a lead-in as ill-fitting and low-rated as the new comedies - although I guess nothing would rate too high against NCIS, as AoS itself knows all too welll.

ReplyDeleteOMG, Forever is getting better, last night episode consolidated my loving for Abe-Henry relationship.....so adorable to watch, the one thing peculiar about this show is the love between Abe and Henry, a father and son relationship but we see the 200 yrs old father looking younger than the son, and acting way older and wiser than the 60+ son. The interaction and acting between these two actors is great!!!!!!!

ReplyDeleteMe too but I the overnights for these young skewing shows are often so misleading that I don't want to jump to conclusions just yet. It's like last week when the overnights made it look like Laura was a winner when it was clearly a looser.
ReplyDeleteABC should move Grey's Anatomy to Tuesday 8pm next season. It held up well on Thursday 8pm and Season 12 could be the final season because most actors contracts ends after S12. They could launch a new Shonda show at Thursday at 8pm (Scandal and HTGAWM are not 8pm shows...)

ReplyDeleteABC is in a very odd position, especially on Tuesdays. More than any other network, it lacks a clear identity. Or maybe it's better to say it is reluctant to focus largely on women, which it does best with.
ReplyDeleteI get why AOS is on, but it's kind of an odd fit for the network, especially on Tuesdays. And while there's no reason why two different types of comedy can't exist at the same time, shows like MLS seem...kind of out of place on the network, especially when all of its hits are more family focused.
At least Forever is doing better than anyone probably expected it to do. I'm curious to see what those demos look like. If it's, say, a 1.4 or higher, and stays that way next week, perhaps ABC will order a full season. It's gotta start somewhere to build up the night.
Also, interesting to see that both NCIS and TV rose and CF was even.
As for Fox...yikes. What a mess its Tuesdays are.
AoS is respectable because it got a 1.9? Really? A show in its second Season that has dropped hard since its first episode premiere and literally has synergy oozing out of it and it got a 1.9? It's pathetic.

MLS was obviously going to be DOA. I thought Selfie wasn't going to be a hit but I was expecting a decent start at least.

Those are random most years, don't put credibility into them. Some of them might come to pass but it will be based on luck, nothing else.

The second half is good and made me want to follow the show, but it was really, reaaaally hard for me to get there; the episodes were there and I was like "I don't want to watch this crap". A recomendation would be to start from episode 12 and onwards, episode 1 to 11 are truly bad

I think Babar is pretty much far away from being a fanboy. A 1.9 is a 2 tenths drops from the premiere with a possible adjustment upwards to 2.1 just like last week. If Shield is steady at low 2s and high 1s it will still be a reliable player for ABC's troubled nights. It's not pathetic at all
ReplyDeleteABC successfully fixed the 8pm Thursday death slot with Grey's. But it sounds that a lot of work still needs to be done for tuesdays. The network started this season with very healthy ratings on every night - excluding Saturdays (of course ...) and Tuesdays.
ReplyDeleteI guess, but unless all shows are equal, one has to be lower than others. TMOL, so far, appears to be doing better than Revolution and comedies that have gone in the slot. That's something. And total viewers aren't the same thing as young viewers, they can be helpful to some degree.

ReplyDeleteI almost quit after episode 4, but I'm so glad I didn't. Around episode 10 it starts to improve hugely because the serialized elements become more and more prominent and the Scooby-Do type missions start to disappear. Now it's simply awesome. For anyone who can't deal with the early eps, I recommend skipping to ep 10, it's around that point that it starts to get better and better.

ReplyDelete- Revolution premiered with a 1.8 and didn't hit a 1.5 until its third episode. While the comparison should not be made like this since we need to adjust for the year to year decline (~10%), Laura still didn't do better than Revolution. It is, indeed, less prone to fall a lot more since it is a procedural, but on the other hand, freshman shows are prone to fall more than sophmores so I am not sure how much this really matters.
- Total viewers, per se, are irrelevant. Usually though, when a show has a lot of these, what it means is that the majority of the 18-49 demo is made by people in the 35-49 spectrum, which are less valuable than the 18-34 ones. So while this is against what people usually think, having a lot of total viewers is usually an indicator of less profitability.
- Sure, one show has to be lower than the others. But by the same token, one show has to be cancelled to make room for the others.
I don't think Laura is totally dead yet, and even though I thought it would have bombed much harder than it did, I still don't think it looks healthy long term.
I quit after episode 1. I thought it was so bad it wasn't worth persevering with.

As far as what might replace it, that's a good point, but I think we need to consider that NBC still has a lot of holes to fill. If the show can get a consistent rating, it might help elsewhere on the schedule. In fact, for a few reasons, I'd like to see a network make a play on Saturdays. I could see TMOL getting a similar demo rating on that night,.
As I said above, the next few weeks are key. If TMOL gets a 1.4 or a 1.5 consistently, I think it will be given the back nine. If it gets that at the end of the season, it'll probably be renewed, given what Revolution was doing at the end of last season.

Many people hate on Arrow and The Flash and called them "teen shows about high school superheroes". They have obviously never watched the show because Oliver is 30 and Barry is 23/24.

ReplyDeleteThough ABC was the most underwhelming last night, CBS also wasn't particularly impressive. NCIS is finally showing its age. NBC was the only real winner. The Voice is having an excellent season so far after the hiccup against big bang on premiere night. Chicago Fire also continues to do well even accounting for the huge drop at the half hour. I don't even consider FOX a big 4 anymore.
I think it should be fine if it stays in the high ones, anything below that and it's in trouble.

ReplyDeleteRevenge had a season average 1.5 and was renewed last year. 14 of the 22 episodes were 1.5 or below and it was renewed. If AoS stays in the 1.5-2.0 range it will be renewed.

ReplyDeleteThey might have thought that the success of GOTG and the lead up to Avengers 2 would give AoS a sizable bump that would also help the romcom's (people tuning in early). Unfortunately they've done nothing for AoS and it's all just collapsing.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, this is the first time ever I've been worried about it (last year, I always had it as a certain renewal, nothing less). It's at 75% of ABC's drama average. While said drama average is at the moment VERY inflated by the huge premieres that happened last week, it's still not very good if Shield settles at 80% or so being a sophomore show still far from syndication. I don't think it's still in any serious danger because it has a lot of other stuff going for it (particularly the M18-34) but I don't like the looks of it right now.

ReplyDeleteThat's actually not a bad thing. Usually means that the show was skewing super young and it's more likely that most of its demo audience was 18-34 (aka more valuable to advertisers than the 35-49 portion)
ReplyDeleteIt won't be a matter of renewal just for the 3rd season, but rather for the 3rd and 4th combined for sake of syndication purposes. So while the ratings remain weak, ABC is expected to make a hard decision in May.

ReplyDeleteIf it doesn't get adjusted up, that's a series low... granted, it has a long history of adjusting up, but unless it's 4 tenths it's still lower than last week and this is only the second episode of the season. I'm so damn pissed at this. The season premiere is widely agreed to have been awesome, it just doesn't make any sense whatsoever for the numbers to dip afterwards, unless people really did tune in just for Lucy Lawless.
I'm going to be blaming and hating on those stupid new comedies now, if you don't mind.

ReplyDeleteAgreed, I stopped watching AoS last season but after reading so many good things about the 2nd half, I binge watched it a few weeks ago. It is so much better and has so many stories to tell. I don't know when Agent Carter is supposed to premiere but I can only hope they would pair it with AoS and not separate the two. They could feed off of each other. These comedies are ridiculous. I am not a fan of sitcoms to begin with and these just remind me why.

I watch the show but, honestly I'm not sure for how much longer. I don't want to get into my opinion and upset the dedicated fans (cause I know how that feels to have someone bash my show) but I personally feel the ratings aren't due to promotion one way or the other.

ReplyDeleteI'm a bit relieved.. Person of Interest hasn't dropped this week. Still, estimated 1.8 isn't great either. I hope it'll stabilize (gaining is rather unlikely, in my opinion, even though I'd love to see that happening) now. :)

Actually,… according to this rating chart, CF is down less than half a million, which I’d say is pretty good considering other shows are dropping a few million in the second ep. But I understand you’re upset Shay is gone. I was angry when Grey’s killed Lexi. I stopped watching after that and I admit I kinda hoped it would flop…lol. But for me there was more going wrong with Grey’s than just one (of my favourites) character dying. That was just the straw that broke the camels back. Chicago Fire made a risky move no doubt, but I think it will survive just fine. I liked Shay but I agree with why they did it. I think we will get some really great stories with her death and I look forward to seeing the talented actors that are still on the show bring the stories to life with what I know will be amazing performances.

Here the vibe about it still seems pretty positive, but elsewhere I've seen a lot of comments about it being gone by this time or that time, that it was good while it lasted, that sort of thing. I look at the numbers, but I don't really get what they mean as far as the chances for long term survival of the show.
ReplyDeleteWell for me it's not just Shay... They are turning Kelly into the old Kelly and I really don't like this thing. He grew up so much last season and now he's like he's going back, drinking and sleeping with everyone... Plus they pretty much destroyed my favorite pair (I mean there's still hope, I know tv show change and change all the time, but still...) so right now there are more things I don't like than things I like... That's why I'll stop. The same thing happened to me with PD. By the end of first season there was just three things in the entire show I liked: Sophia Bush, Jon Seda e Jason Beghe... so I stopped! If the things you don't like about it are more than the ones you like there's a problem hahahahahahah
ReplyDeleteThe SERIES premiere, last year, had a crazy 4.7 rating due to massive promotion. The second season, however, didn't receive nearly as much promotion which I believe is being reflected in the ratings.
ReplyDeleteI'm not saying the level of promotion is the only, or even main factor that determines the numbers. There are other important elements, one of them simply being how good the show is and there's no denying AoS didn't win over a huge audience like ABC expected it to. That being said, I think the fact that ABC's entire Thursday line-up and Once Upon a Time all premiered so high proves that when a network puts real effort into promoting their shows, it pays off.
You won't upset me if you criticize the show. There's criticism and then there's bashing (the latter in the case of AoS would be the stuff like "OMG, who wants to watch a show about a bunch of boring human agents without powers and a few D-list characters from the comics! Give us Iron Man or GTFO!" that people keep posting everywhere). If someone can't handle civil criticism of a show they like, that's their problem.
1.3 isn't great. It may have higher total viewers than the rest of the ABC lineup , but what matters most is the 18-49 numbers. It got a 1.7 last week so...

I am pretty sure last season it averaged a 1.9 so a 1.8 is not that bad for the show. I believe it is also up from last week which it got a 1.7 in the final ratings.

ReplyDeleteGotham has not grabbed me, I started to skip sections in episode 2 and it's story is not grabbing me, I think they are trying to hard to make it real world and it doesn't fit, at least AoS,Arrow and Flash have a sci fi/comic feel to it. I love both Marvel and DC, but I am a bigger DC.
