-Winners:
“Thursday Night Football” (CBS), “Grey’s Anatomy” (ABC), “Scandal” (ABC), “How To Get Away With Murder” (ABC)
-Fading Fast:
“The Vampire Diaries” (CW), “Bad Judge” (NBC)
-Losers:
“A To Z” (NBC), “Gracepoint” (Fox), “Reign” (CW)
———-
-Ratings Breakdown:
The New York Jets at the New England Patriots on “Thursday Night Football” kept CBS in the Thursday overnight winner’s circle with an estimated 9.5 rating/16 share in the household overnights from 8:30-11:30 p.m. ET. Comparably, this was three percent above the 9.2/16 in the overnights for Indianapolis versus Houston last week, and that translated into 15.85 million viewers and a 5.4 rating/18 share among adults 18-49 (based on the Live + Same Day data and including results on the NFLN). In other words, “Sunday Night Football” on NBC is a notably stronger option.
Earlier in the evening on CBS was the Football Kick-Off Show at a second-place 5.2/ 9 in the 8 p.m. half-hour. As a reminder, results for any live sporting event are always approximate.
There was more positive news at ABC, the most-improved network on Thursday, with its line-up of “Grey’s Anatomy” (#2: 6.6/11), “Scandal” (#1 of the scripted shows for the evening: 7.7/12) and week four of “How To Get Away With Murder” (#1: 7.2/12). Although “HTGAWM” dipped by nine percent week-to-week (versus a 7.9/13 on Oct. 9), it was still four percent above “Scandal” on the year-ago evening (6.9/12 on 10/17/13).
Elsewhere, the results were limited. Veteran Fox drama “Bones” was on par from one week earlier, with a third-place 4.1/ 6 in the household overnights at 8 p.m. But week three of limited drama “Gracepoint” dipped to a 2.2/ 4 at 9 p.m., which was 12 percent below the 2.5/ 4 one week earlier. And that translated into a mere 3.80 million viewers and a 0.9 rating/3 share among adults 18-49 (based on the Live + Same Day data). Three-week overnight track for “Gracepoint”: 3.0/ 5 – 2.5/ 4 – 2.2/ 4.
On NBC, “The Biggest Loser” at a fourth-place 2.9/ 5 from 8-9 p.m. remains a marked improvement from year-ago sitcoms “Parks and Recreation” (2.4/ 4 on 10/17/13) and short-lived “Welcome to the Family” (1.9/ 3). But the inspirational reality/competition has lost steam since moving to Thursday.
Next were episodes three of sitcoms “Bad Judge” (#3: 3.1/ 5 at 9 p.m.) and “A To Z” (#3: 2.3/ 4 at 9:30 p.m.), which dipped from last week by 16 percent and eight percent, respectably. And “A To Z” was only equal to failed year-ago time period occupant “The Michael J. Fox Show” (while “Bad Judge” was 24 percent above former — and also failed — time period occupant “Sean Saves the World” (2.5/ 4 on 10/17/13).
Three-week overnight track for “Bad Judge: 4.4/ 7 – 3.7/ 6 – 3.1/ 5.
Three-week overnight track for “A To Z”: 3.3/ 5 – 2.5/ 4 – 2.3/ 4.
Consider both comedies nothing more than time period filler until sophomore “The Blacklist” steps into the Thursday 9-10 p.m. time period in February 2015.
Soon-to-conclude “Parenthood,” which is exiting on NBC the way every established series should, finished a distant third with a 2.9/ 5 in the overnights at 10 p.m. But that was 12 percent above the 2.6/ 5 one year earlier.
The CW, meanwhile, has sprung a leak at 9 p.m. care of sophomore “Reign” at a 0.9/ 1 at 9 p.m., which was a hefty 40 percent below both lead-in “The Vampire Diaries” and its year-ago time period average (1.5/ 2). Also concerning for The CW is the overnight loss of 25 percent from the year-ago evening for “The Vampire Diaries” (2.0/ 3 on 10/17/13).

Scandal seems to be up.
ReplyDeleteScandal was so excellent last night!!!!
ReplyDeleteReign going down! Really sad! Last night was a solid episode as well.
ReplyDeleteI will wait to see the demos and finals, but just yesterday, I was thinking BJ had an outside shot at a back nine pick up. It's hardly a hit, but NBC needs new comedies, and if it demonstrated any sort of stability, I could see it being used in the future. obabin mentioned the Heroes follow up as a potential Thursday contender when TB moves there. That makes sense, but if it's not ready in time, or if the network wants to try comedies there, maybe BJ isn't a terrible option,. The behind-the-scenes showrunner problems wouldn't help, though.
ReplyDeleteI had a dream that Bad Judge was the first cancellation of the season. Of course it won't happen though.
ReplyDeleteGreat for ABC TGIT lineup!!! Alright for Biggest Loser and Parenthood. I was hoping for Bad Judge to go up considering it showed stability last week, I hope NBC gives it at least a chance.
ReplyDeleteCW has fixed Mondays and now has to fix Thursdays!!! Good luck!!!
ReplyDeletePoor A to Z
ReplyDeleteCW should ship Reign to Fridays, SPN to Thursdays after TVD and premiere either iZombie or The Messengers after The Flash come midseason.
What I find so odd is that this series was pulled up from a previous season. NBC clearly wanted to work with Kate Walsh in this vehicle, as opposed to something else, and yet, it seems like nothing could go right with the creative end. You'd think they'd do more to make sure the series had a steady creative team behind it, to whatever extent they could. If not in the fall, why not hold it to midseason? Clearly, you wanted the show there, so, what gives?
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if Mondays are fixed.
ReplyDeleteVery curious to see L+3 and L+7 da
ReplyDeleteTVD and SPN didn't mesh well the last time.
ReplyDeleteCW better put the development of the next DC show into hyper drive to fix Thursday next year
ReplyDeleteWell, SPN has proved that it can hold an audience, even if it drops to 0.7 to 0.9 after TVD, it would still be better than any show that has had TVD as a lead-in in recent years.
ReplyDeleteindeed one of the best this season
ReplyDeleteScandal was excellent last night! Bellamy Young is simply killing it week after week. Loved her scenes with Mary Mouser (new Karen), very touching!
ReplyDeleteTrue. I'm just wary because people suggest SPN should be moved anywhere and everywhere.
ReplyDeleteSPN is the Bones of CW.
ReplyDeletekerry too killed it
ReplyDeleteMellie has been my favorite character since season 3! She looks one of the girls from the 90s sitcom, Step by Step.
ReplyDeleteEspecially when she screamed at the boy's parents for not taking responsibility for their son being inappropriate to Karen.
ReplyDeletei know right that was amazing!!!
ReplyDeleteDespite the additional scripts, I think it will be MLS.
ReplyDeleteI think it is!!! The numbers are way better now; I don't know if it will last long, but, right now, it's good for CW!!! IMO
ReplyDeleteDoubt they'll move SPN they really found the ground after that Friday time slot, eventually maybe move them to Friday if Jane doesn't work out.
ReplyDeleteBut I must say it would be a smart move to put a newcomer behind The Flash.
This episode was great. Kinda reminds me of "Slap Bet" episode of HIMYM.
ReplyDeleteI really hope that doesn't mean Bones went down.
ReplyDeleteIt should have been paired with Marry Me on Tuesdays; those two shows are crazy compatible!
ReplyDeleteWhich was heavily damaged by too many moves.
ReplyDeleteFor now, yes. I guess I was waiting to see next week's numbers.
ReplyDeleteI agree, but NBC wants to groom AAB. I am gonna be so sad when A to Z gets cancelled and that would be partly because we won't find out what happened after 8 months....
ReplyDeleteI think The Messengers is assuredly going to replace The 100, so iZombie after The Flash, if CW decides to do that.
ReplyDeleteStill, it FOX's most resilient show.
ReplyDeleteSPN now like an old grandma in the house full of people : doesn't matter where she lands she always irritates someone and on someone's way. Yee, lets put it back on Fridays, because SPN always "wasting" precious lead-ins, like it was with Arrow 2 years ago and now with The Flash.
ReplyDeleteBones if fine. I think FOX is gonna get a couple more seasons out of it
ReplyDeleteI know, About a Boy is probably going to get to syndication and NBC really needs a comedy that does that, but damn it! Marry Me and A to Z are crazily compatible, they are a perfect fit! Just today I watched them back to back and it was incredible! So even though I understand NBC's reasoing I just can't help but think of how awesome it would have been to have both shows airing back to back. *sigh*
ReplyDeleteBasically, bad news for NBC comedies, Gracepoint and Reign.
ReplyDeleteIf/When they move Reign I could see either iZombie or The M get the post VD time slot, with the undeath combo having probably a better chance than the undeath-angel combo. But BatB could snitch the post Arrow time slot, doubtful but maybe.
ReplyDeleteI think the CW will avoid pairing up 2 DC shows on the same night.
I've seen one episode of AAB. I should probably watch more before judging it, and maybe I was just kind of tired, but I watched it right after MM and didn't laugh all that much.
ReplyDeleteNBC does need new comedies and, one would think, ones that get to syndication, but I don't think that is going to help AAB right now.
As for A to Z, don't give up hope just yet. It's not like NBC has anything else doing all that well.
Wasn't this or next season supposed to be the last?
ReplyDeleteFox has Backstrom for midseason. which is supposed to be like House and/or Bones. If that does decently, there's less pressure to renew it, I think.
I think the same. If it wasn't a limited series, I would say Gracepoint would be the first cancellation.
ReplyDeleteThe thing about A to Z is that NBC will probably air all 13 episodes and maybe give it a partial back order as a filler till Blacklist airs in it's slot, but that will be pretty much the end of it. It is not doing it well for NBC to consider moving it to another slot when Blacklist takes over Thurs 9PM.
ReplyDeleteWhy, oh why, does NBC keep airing new comedies on Thursdays?
They are not exactly fixed, but Mondays have definitely improved.
ReplyDeleteFOX hasn't confirmed it. I think they will keep renewing till the two leads are willing.
ReplyDeleteI see Backstrom going the same way as Rake; DOA.
I think they should have paired Marry Me and A to Z after The Voice, and About a Boy and Bad Judge after The Biggest Looser.
ReplyDeleteSeems like TVD & reign will score the same as last week-0.8 & 0.4.
ReplyDeleteBad Judge is still holding its in and doing better than last years Thursday comedies.
ReplyDeleteThere's always one show that gets moved around an absurd number of times on each network--3rd Rock, Mad About You and Scrubs on NBC, for instance. Hell, even Parks and 30 Rock have had numerous time slots.
ReplyDeleteAAB is not a funny show.
ReplyDeleteReign 0.5? It's not too much but it's better than last week. I hope Reign gets better week by week.
ReplyDeleteMaybe, but networks seem to be more patient recently. Half the battle seems to be getting a show that doesn't stink, and NBC has comedies, to varying degrees, that fit that bill. It's not like the other shows are doing 3.0 and it's doing a 1.0. I can see the network trying it out somewhere else.
ReplyDeleteIt has a lot of dramas/event series on deck, but some of them are limited in where they can go. Hannibal probably stays at 10;00, as might Aquarius. AD is bound for Sundays. And it's not clear Heroes will even be ready in time for the spring. Meanwhile, only Parks is returning from last season. Mission Control is already cancelled. UKS got 13 episodes, but M. Robinson has only 6. The new Cosby series has, I am pretty sure, been pushed back to next season. Whether or not One Big Happy has
Both have 10 seasons of the bag and been in almost every single timeslot possible, and both of them still bring ratings to their networks. I can see the resemblance
ReplyDeleteIs that your opinion, or are you saying that it was never meant to be funny?
ReplyDeleteOf course! Kerry is amazing no matter what the episode :) And I agree with you, the scene where she yelled at the parents - ahmaaaazing!
ReplyDeletethat's the number of top 25 markets,it means lower rating in average.
ReplyDeleteWonderful (sarcasm). It's a shame...this episode was so good.
ReplyDeleteWith that top 25 demo, it doesn't look because the overall demo is usually lower. :(
ReplyDeleteYes, TVD was very good last night - IMHO the best episode of S6 to date and I'm not even a huge TVD fan. I think Reign is always very good and gets more intense with each episode. Hopefully TVD gets at least 0.9 in the finals and Reign holds at 0.5.
ReplyDeleteYes, I live overseas and I don't understand why ratings are so low. Reign is a good show, I don't want it gets canceled.
ReplyDeleteit definitely is in danger for cancellation this year unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteEdward, do you already have any fast nationals numbers?
ReplyDeleteThere above
ReplyDeleteThey should be released in a few minutes.
ReplyDeleteNo, those are the top 25 numbers.
ReplyDeleteOh sorry misread
ReplyDeleteI know, it's so sad but I can't help. I can hope for the better, nothing more.
ReplyDeleteTGIT:
ReplyDeleteGrey's: 2.4/8.5M
Scandal: 2.9/9.8M
HTGAWM: 2.7/9.7M
Good but big drops hopefully they pick back up next week
ReplyDeleteFor FOX
ReplyDeleteBones: 1.6
Gracepoint: 0.8
Only big drops for HTGAWM.
ReplyDeleteIt got a 1.6, Like I said, it's fine.
ReplyDeleteTGIT?
ReplyDeleteYou never heard of TGIT?
ReplyDeleteHopefully greys and scandal adjust up to tie last week
ReplyDeleteThank god it's thursday.
ReplyDeleteI think Grey's also got a 2.4.
ReplyDeleteHTGAWM needs to stabilize.
ReplyDeleteYes it did so
ReplyDeleteHopefully it beats last wk
NBC Thursday:
ReplyDeleteLoser: 1.3
Bad Judge: 1.2
A to Z: 1.0
P'HOOD: 1.3
Both Reign and TVD up.
ReplyDeleteThat's the danger of premiering so high and it's at 10
ReplyDeleteABC's lineup down, but still strong.
ReplyDeleteWhere I'm from it's Thank God it's Friday.
ReplyDeleteGood for Bones. :)
ReplyDeleteIt used to be a year ago
ReplyDeleteABC has been promoting Thursday line up as TGIT for weeks.
Yeah for Reign. Perhaps there's still hope.
ReplyDeleteHalf hours ?
ReplyDeleteSo if this demo for BJ keeps up, I think it'll get an order for more episodes. At this point, why not?
ReplyDeleteNot released yet.
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting in two weeks when Elementary premiers and provides 'real' drama competition. Even if there is slight overlap, could push HTGAWM down to low 2s. Will be interesting to see how TBBT impacts GA as well.
ReplyDeleteIf you consider Elementary's 2.0 real competition, sure.
ReplyDeleteKeep in mind that in two weeks, BJ will have CBS comedy competition. I think NBC will wait until that test before ordering more episodes. Football brings in a completely different audience and most of those will not migrate to NFLN for the remaining games.
ReplyDeleteYay!TVD up from next week!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I just saw that. :)

Yay Reign is UP!
ReplyDeleteBoth TVD & reign stayed stable in their half hours!Nice!
ReplyDeleteYay Bones :)
ReplyDeleteYay for tvd up from last week
ReplyDeleteViewership is up too.
ReplyDeleteTVD was up even from the premiere, last night's episode was so good! Still hope for more 0.1 at the final numbers
ReplyDeleteYAY TVD, REIGN (and GREYS?) UP!!!... HTGAWM finally under Scandal but love both shows so happy
ReplyDeleteWell, I did say "if," lol. But yeah, good point. Still, a 1.3 is nothing to write home about, but it's a starting point.
ReplyDeleteYay Reign & VD are up!Hope they stay in finals
ReplyDeleteGood for Reign; hopefully it won't adjust down
ReplyDeleteOpinion mainly. I enjoy the show from time to time, but it feels more like Katims invested in a good story than a laugh out loud funny comedy. It's sad because the cast is capable of so much more.
ReplyDelete18-34 ratings per showbuzzdaily:
ReplyDeleteABC:
Grey's: 1.8
Scandal: 2.4
Murder: 2.3
NBC:
The Biggest Loser: 0.8
Bad Judge: 0.8
A to Z: 0.7
Parenthood: 0.8
CBS:
Football: 2.9 (8:30PM)/ 3.4 (9-10PM)/ 3.2 (10-11PM)
FOX:
Bones: 1.1
Gracepoint: 0.5
CW:
TVD: 0.9
Reign: 0.4
Sure, but it's definitely not a flop already, and that's a good thing. It'll only be on for 16 episodes this season, so ABC should let it take a break before its final few episodes, run a marathon leading up to them, and then hope it has a big impact on the final ratings. Once it's off the air for a few months, but before the second season, run the entire series again.
ReplyDeleteIt's got a cable like schedule/structure, so ABC should try to promote it like a cable show to some degree.
TVD beat Arrow this week, now can people stop talking trash about TVD while they praise Arrow for similar and even lower ratings.
ReplyDeleteHTGAWM won't have a break. Secrets & Lies is supposed to take the time slot in march.
ReplyDeletethey're definitely doing better than Reign...wich needs to be pulled ASAP
ReplyDeleteratings and quality are two different pairs of shoes
ReplyDeleteThe calendar works out so that it doesn't get a break around Christmas/the new year? It's already aired, what, 3 episodes? Running just until the end of November would take away six more. That leaves 7 episodes. Between then and March, there's plenty of time to take a break to run a marathon to juice the final ratings, even with
ReplyDeleteAh, gotcha. One thing that annoys me about a lot of comedies these days is that act as mini dramas. Not all shows need to be as bitter and cynical as a Curb or Seinfeld, but if it's a comedy, try to make us laugh... okay?
ReplyDeleteReign Up o/ im happy about it. HTGAWM drop iwas expecting that but the show is still doing great.
ReplyDeleteYeah, obviously it isn't a flop.
ReplyDeleteAnd it has 15 episodes this season, not 16.
ERMAGOD Reign is UP finally!!!
ReplyDeleteWut, I thought both Scandal and Murder were going to have at least a 3.0...... :(
maybe it will be adjust up :D
ReplyDeleteEven easier to run a marathon before the final episode, then.
ReplyDeleteIt's all relative - the 1.3/1.4 is so far acceptable for Mysteries of Laura in a weaker time slot, who's to say it's not good enough until TBL moves there in Feb - though I'm guess after SoA flops after TV, NBC will keep TBL on Mondays
ReplyDeletestill doing better than 3 years ago, not sure how you could doubt that there's a giant improvement?
ReplyDeletehappy fot TVD
ReplyDeleteArrow and TVD still tied for their second episodes this season, and we don't know how both shows would do in future weeks (though Arrow is more likely to be hurt by the World Series than TVD.)
ReplyDeleteAlso, personally though I do love Arrow more, I don't trash TVD and I love TVD too.
Thursday is already the hardest day, but TGIT is really annihilating every show. CW... damn.
ReplyDeleteTBL is scheduled to move to Wednesdays? When did they announce that?
ReplyDeleteAnd if SOA flops, there's no way at all NBC will put TBL after a new episode of TV. It has plenty of other dramas to put there.
How is thursday the hardest night? Used to be a good anchor last year thanks to TVD. Just because one show fails to deliver that doesen't mean the rest is doomed. TVD is still doing fine for a show in its sixth season on theCW.
ReplyDeleteIt's the biggest night in Television is what I mean by hardest. You're absolutely right. TVD is "doing fine for a show in its sixth season on the CW". But you realise how many caveats are attached after the "doing fine"? And "doing fine" isn't even that great a proclamation, let alone adding the other stipulations. I'm not bashing it, I like TVD. Fact remains, it's 25% worse ratings-wise than it was last year. And frankly, I think S6 is already 50 times better than S5 was. Ergo, me commiserating that Thursday's are an increasingly hard night. They're up against the toughest competition from rival networks. Thursday Night Football, not to mention what is easily ABC's strongest, juggernaut of a night.
ReplyDeleteLOL, no one above 34 watches TVD!
ReplyDeleteWhat only speaks for the show, TVD is doing really well against the monster that is ABCs TGIT. Especially since the shows that are on this night share a target demo with TVD.
ReplyDeleteAnd while I'm not a TVD fan anymore and rather am a fan that wandered off to 'The Originals` (despite being the biggest Klaus critic out there) I have to say: for what it is it's doing fine. Fine in terms of: despite its oh so obvious flaws, re-used sets and budget constraints. Look at the show, seen a new set lately? New anything? TVD has to be one of the cheapes shows theCW is pulling out if its behind.
I'm more talking about Reign, wich is seriously a thorne in my eyes, not only because of my bias against the whole set-up sympathizing a historical character that was never deserving of sympathy after her deeds (we all know that Schiller tried it with his novella but at least he maintained historical facts) and throwing history out of a window completely but also because it's the networks tumor.
TheCW had 3 years of god-awful monday nights, without a doubt the networks weakest night for years. Clever planning and scheduling actually managed to at least partially fix the night for now. Tuesdays were also a sore issue until last year and especially in this year took off.
All I'm arguing is: end Reign, save thursday nights. Or maybe shift the show to fridays. TheCW is doing itself a HUGE mis-favour by keeping the show in this slot
Hmmm - why exactly are Fox still showing Gracepoint? I think the public have made their views pretty clear about this one. Surely next week they have to finally put it out of its misery?
ReplyDeleteYou can definitely keep your hope. People may hate hearing it, but the network loves Reign and has faith in it. I don't think it's going anywhere this season, and I don't even think it won't get renewed. Maybe not an early renewal like last year, and maybe scheduled for a different night - but there's good reason to believe they order S3. Plus, I'm fairly certain Reign does well in the +7 numbers and also online. And overseas. All that stuff factors in!
ReplyDeletePlease don't cancel A-Z.
ReplyDeleteI really hope Grey's can maintain the ratings as some of you have told me and I saw on a commercial the other day that TBBT is returning to Thursdays next week. I was never a fan of them changing the time slot anyway. I think they should have either put HTGAWM in that slot b/c it had a lot of buzz as a new show or Scandal b/c it has a stronger same day viewing following than Grey's. I guess time will tell if they made the right choice.
ReplyDeleteusually I dont go for comedy but I like kate walsh so I give bad judge a try. its funny.
ReplyDeletei mean just this week when the eyecandy said "if you ever start reading less, give me a call" - I just loved it!
I don't think we were arguing different points. All I said is I feel bad for the CW because Thursday nights are the hardest, due to the TGIT line-up. You literally just agreed with that, so...
ReplyDeleteThe Emmy alway goes to Tony Goldwyn
ReplyDeleteTony, Tony, Tony
ReplyDeleteSeen on You Tube : "TGIT. Thank Good it's Tony!"
