The Indianapolis Colts at the Houston Texans on “Thursday Night Football” kept CBS in the Thursday overnight winner’s circle with an estimated 9.2 rating/16 share in the household overnights from 8:30-11:30 p.m. ET. Comparably, this was eight percent above the 8.5/14 in the overnights for Minnesota versus Green Bay last week, and that translated into 16.54 million viewers and a 5.9 rating/19 share among adults 18-49 (based on the Live + Same Day data and including results on the NFLN).
Earlier in the evening on CBS was the Football Kick-Off Show at a second-place 5.2/ 9 in the 8 p.m. half-hour. As a reminder, results for any live sporting event are always approximate.
Vastly improved ABC finished a solid No. 2 for the evening with its line-up of Shonda Rhimes dramas “Grey’s Anatomy” (6.6/11), which increased by 83 percent from failed year-ago occupant “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” (3.6/ 6 on 10/10/13), “Scandal” (7.4/12) and “How to Get Away With Murder” (7.9/13), which earned the additional two episodes ordered for the season. Three-week overnight track for “How to Get Away With Murder”: 9.7/16 – 8.7/15 – 7.9/13).
In week two news, Fox limited crime solver “Gracepoint” dipped to a distant fourth-place 2.5/ 4 at 9 p.m., which was 17 percent below the already lackluster 3.0/ 5 from one week earlier. And that translated into just 4.76 million and a 1.2/ 3 among adults 18-49 (based on the Live + Same Day data). Comparably, overnight retention for “Gracepoint” out of relocated lead-in “Bones” (#3: 4.2/ 7 at 8 p.m.) was weak at just 60 percent.
Week two of NBC sitcoms “Bad Judge” and “A To Z” also suffered slippage, which is nothing unusual in the second week of any telecast. But both did not exactly get off to a rousing start last week. “Bad Judge” scored a 3.7/ 6 at 9 p.m., which was 16 percent below the 4.4/ 7 last Thursday (which came in at 5.84 million viewers and a 1.3/ 4 among adults 18-49). Particularly positive for “Bad Judge,” however, was overnight growth of 61 percent from failed year-ago occupant “Sean Saves the World” (2.3/ 4 on 10/10/13). And “Bad Judge” built from lead-in “The Biggest Loser” (#4: 3.0/ 5 from 8-9 p.m.) by 23 percent. So, consider week two of “Bad Judge” not necessarily a bad thing (pun intended).
“A To Z,” in contrast, slipped by a more severe 32 percent with a 2.5/ 4 at 9:30 p.m. (#3), which was 24 percent below its already anemic 3.3/ 5 debut. And that 3.3 in the overnights translated into 4.79 million and a 1.2/ 3 in the demo (based on the Live + Plus Same Day data). Comparably, “A To Z” was also only equal to failed year-ago occupant “The Michael J. Fox Show.”
Next on NBC was another installment of the final season of “Parenthood” at a distant third-place 2.9/ 5, which was equal to one week earlier and 16 percent above lead-in “A To Z.”
As for “The Biggest Loser,” while that 3.0/ 5 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m. is a noticeable loss from its performance on Tuesday last season, it was still 43 percent above the year-ago combination of “Parks and Recreation” and short-lived “Welcome to the Family” (which outlived its welcome after three episodes).
While you certainly cannot fully judge any network by the overnights, veteran “The Vampire Diaries” on The CW dipped to a 1.5/ 2 at 8 p.m. (#5), which was 17 percent below the 1.8/ 3 on the year-ago evening. And sophomore “Reign” followed with a depressed 1.0/ 2 at 9 p.m. (#5), which was only equal to an encore of “The Originals” on the year-ago evening.

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

ReplyDeleteNBC: Results like these are why I think NBC will, overall, see some growth this season, if it is new scripted series don't flop. None of the shows here are doing well, but last fall on the night, things were so bad, there was only one place to go, which was up. And up they went.

ReplyDeleteNBC's comedy is really up in the air. Parks is ending, Community is gone, and the only show from last season to return was AAB. Meanwhile, most of its new shows have smaller episode orders, and it doesn't have slots allotted for any of them. And next season, we're likely to see the return of Cosby.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't get worried just yet. It's gotten decent to good reviews, and it's not doing that much worse than anything else on the schedule or anything that will come up. It's definitely in trouble, but, if, say, MM does well, and AAB isn't working, maybe we'll see more of AZ, if not now, then next season.
Sadly this may be this year's Trophy Wife, a liked show that has been placed behind a show that doesn't seem compatible instead of placing it behind say Marry Me which is really compatible. It's too bad that A to Z isn't doing well. I find it charming, funny and rather adorable.

ReplyDeleteI too doubt it'll move to fri-HoD& BatB need places at Midseason and I think CW really supports Reign & I think if CW were going to move it,they would've done so on the fall schedule.CWs never moved a post VD show during the season and I don't think they'll start now.Plus,VD is fourth on the network now,it shouldn't be used a leadin for another new show when it's ratings are crashing and it as a leadin hasn't done any favors for a show after it

NBC is up 24% in household overnights versus last year which is great. Of course last years numbers were terrible but growth is growth.
ReplyDeleteIts in the 0.3-0.4 region. That is Hart Of Dixie territory. And that despite having a 0.9 lead in. Maybe VD ratings arent stellar anymore, but it still provides Reign with a decent lead in.
ReplyDeleteNFLN ratings are merged with CBS' ratings because it is the exact same program with the exact same commercials. If they had different commercials, it would be measured separately.

It's got an original premise and a great pedigree, but there's no obvious time for it, and NBC's schedule, for better or worse, looks kind of tight right now. My guess is Tuesdays, if Marry Me doesn't work, but that's bound to get decent if inflated numbers because of TV.

ReplyDeleteI think it's more about there not being an opportunity cost of keeping it there. The only solution to moving it would be to replace it with a newbie (Arrow, The Flash and The 100 wouldn't fit, I don't believe in Jane surviving, The Originals is needed on Mondays and I don't believe they would move Supernatural there, if it moves it's to Mondays).
ReplyDeleteHowever, it is an awful slot to launch a newbie. Not only isn't TVD the powerhouse it was before, but the slot is more competitive than ever due to Scandal. Launching a female skewing show against Scandal would be very hard but launching a male skewing show from the heavily male skewing The Vampire Diaries also wouldn't work. It's a catch-22 situation, so they will probably ride out Reign.
I'm guessing they do because CBS paid a huge fee to license the game. I can't believe the fee would also include a commercial split on top of it. It was a one-year experiment, with CBS having the option to renew, which the certainly will. Considering how many bad games they had, they still won the night and they were able to save the entire Thursday line-up, except for TBBT to run nearly repeat free for rest of season, which will allow them to get solid ratings while ABC is sitting out during the hiatus of TGIT.

ReplyDeleteWith TMoL starting it's decline I think the Wednesday 8pm slot will be open by spring time. There may be room for an adult comedy hour there. Remember the first season of Up All Night scored really high demos in that hour.
ReplyDeleteAlso NBC may want to keep comedies on Thursday by airing UKS paired with Parks in the Thursday 8pm hour before the Blacklist.
I personally subtract the NFLN ratings, which are published along with the Thursday cable ratings, to get the true CBS ratings.

ReplyDeleteAlso, this all depends on where TB goes. If NBC does in fact move it to Thursdays, what does it put before it? Comedies might make sense, but they will probably struggle. And new comedies would make the most sense, since they could package the whole night as being new, but again, they'd struggle.
But if NBC doesn't move the show to Thursdays, and instead moves it to Wednesdays, as I have suggested, I can see comedies going before it.
Another $10 says that if Scorpion looks weaker, or there's no comedies in the hour, or, for some reason, CBS moved Scorpio and put comedies there and they were weak, I can see NBC trying a comedy there. It'd be risky, but it could also give the show as good of a lead-in as the Tuesday comedies have.
Ouch for A to Z. If it comes between it and Bad Judge, NBC will obviously pick up the latter.
