    I'm still annoyed about the decision to replace Shay with Brett. Maybe they did so that they could eventually have a possible long term love interest for Severide, but couldn't they at least have picked an actress (or created a character) with a personality? I can't believe she's a season regular. The temporary paramedic who replaced Dawson while she was in training (I can't remember her name). would have been a far better choice for the role.

    This was my least favorite episode of the season. Brett really annoyed me this episode. We get it- Shay's dead. You don't have shove Brett down our throats and make her have a relationship with Severide. I had started to warm up to Brett before this episode, but now I'm just annoyed again. The only thing I enjoyed tonight was Newhouse and Mills.

    I know. It was bad enough that they tried to pair her up with Jay on Chicago PD, but forcing her together with Severide was a huge turn-off for me.

    It was Casey's time to shine and I think he did was what made the episode for me, along with Newhouse, they are really trying to get us to forget Shay I'm puzzled though why would they replace her with a carbon copy, was she a cheaper version of the exact same character, if she was going to be replaced why not a redhead or even a brunette but the same petite blond I just don't kow then they want to forge a relationship with Kelly, just don't understand

    I'm in the minority apparently, but I really love Brett and what they seem to be starting with her and Severide. I feel like they've done a great job of developing Brett so far and making her her own character. She's very different from Shay, but still strong. As far as being a love interest for Severide, she's exactly what I always hoped for for him. She's got a very big heart, and she called him out on being cold towards that mother. Too many times he's been put with women that are a lot like him and too forward. She was smart enough to turn down his offer to Vegas. I think there seems to be a lot of misdirected hate towards Brett because she's seen as Shay's "replacement," which I understand, but I think it's ridiculous to accuse the writers of killing off Shay so they could bring in a love interest for Severide. If their only goal was to bring in someone like Brett for Severide, they would have brought her in anyway as Dawson's replacement and I'm sure the storyline with Mills would have gone a different route.


    Rant over. I applaud anyone who made it through that entire paragraph.

    As long as Brett stays away from Halstead on CPD, I could care less what they do with her. Don't care for fake Shay, want real Shay. Sick of seeing her on CPD

    I dont like Brett as she is really bland. Why do they always have to have a love interest for everyone? I didnt realise she was on PD before fire. The best thing about this show is Casey, Severide and the firefighters, except Dawson as she is annoying. I wish they would concentrate on the relationships between the firefighters and especially Casey and Severide more.
    They said this series would be about their friendship but I am not seeing this.

    The reason I resent Brett is because the writers killed off Shay because the idiots in charge made the decision to let the actress who played Shaw go so hence Shaw was killed off ! it was not the actress choice to go as she wanted to stay on the show so I understand the tesentmnt toward Brett and interesting how they could never find the time to five Shay a decent story and airtime but in the short time the lookalike Shay Brett has been on she has been getting
    plenty of both so favoratism is most definitely being played and it sucks !

    I think the direction of Brett's role basically confirms that they let Shay go because she was gay.It's the only explanation for why they would switch a petite blonde paramedic (played by an actress with tons of charisma) with another petite blonde paramedic , played by a lackluster actress. People say that most of the dislike towards Brett is resentment, because they let go of Shay, but had they chosen a more likeable actress, then people wouldn't resent her. Also, your point about Shay not having a decent story just ads to the annoyance. The fact that they seem to be pushing this new actress into a potential relationship with every single attractive male on both Chicago Fire and Chicago PD (First Jay, then Mills, then Severide) when I see no chemistry in any of those cases is even more annoying. Would it have killed them to put this much effort into finding a decent relationship for Shay?

    I completely agree. Another thing that annoys me about Brett is that she's new, yet she already has tons of screen time. There are other characters that have been there from the beginning that I would love to have bigger storylines. Give Otis or Cruz more airtime. I wouldn't be so judgemental towards Brett if they had gradually introduced us to her.

    It's not ridiculous to think that. People forget that money plays a big role in these decisions. Certain roles (like Shay's) get much higher billing than others, If a show wants to introduce a new major character, then sometimes it means having to kill off another major character. Chicago Fire has kept the same main characters around for a long time, without introducing any new major characters, even though they've had a number of temporary characters (mostly females), who would have been great additions to the cast. I'm guessing that the writers wanted Severide to develop a relationship with a main recurring cast member (instead of a guest character), so they had to get rid of a major character in order to stay within their budget.


    The dislike is not not misdirected. I actually agree about Brett being a good character on paper. However, the actress is so unconvincing and unsuited for the role that I find the disconnect distracting. Do you really think that the actress is a good choice for such a major role? I don't. They've also left absolutely no room for character development, which is also another problem because it feels like they are rushing her storyline. BTW, her character appeared in a recent Chicago PD episode, where she had a lot of scenes opposite Jay. .At the end of the episode, she actually tried to ask him out; it seemed like they were setting her up as a love interest for Jay. It's just too much, too soon.

    Okay, but Shay and Brett: two completely different characters. If you're going to resent anyone, don't resent a character; resent the writers/producers.


    I miss Shay. I loved Shay and was extremely sad that they killed her off. However, I just wish people would give Brett a real chance because the resentment is misdirected.

    Most shows keep the same main characters the entire series. I've never heard of a show killing someone off due to budget. I'm not saying it hasn't happened, but I don't think that's the case here. If it were, there are tons of other main characters they could have killed off that wouldn't have had as big an impact. They've said multiple times: they went through each character and what it would mean if they got killed off, and story-wise, Shay's death would hit the hardest.


    Agree to disagree, because I find the actress fantastic. She brings a quirkiness to the character and I think she does a great job. Bringing her on CPD, yeah I didn't like that. But that's on the writers/producers. Not on the actress.

    No she was introduced on fire first. And then she was on CPD the next night of premiere week. She was on 201 and then 203, her and mills were on 204 but they just picked up the victim and left

    I said that in order to bring in a NEW major character they probably had to get rid of one major character. And just because they don't mention budget doesn't mean it's not a factor. It has to be. What is more improbably to me, is killing off a favorite character on a TV show like Chicago Fire, just to create an impact. Maybe in a movie, or Game of Thrones, but most TV shows avoid that. And if they wanted the most impact, why not kill of Severide or Casey? There is no shortage of male characters and their death definitely would have had a tremendous impact. I'm just curious....if Shay had been straight, do you think they would still have killed her off?

    Shay being gay was never a problem on the show, so yes, I do think they would have killed her off regardless.

    I'm fully aware of that. I wasn't trying to create some big debate or make it seem that everyone that dislikes her resents her because of Shay. I was just trying to put a different perspective out there.

    I can't tell you what goes on in the writers' room. I'm just saying that if her being gay was the problem, they wouldn't have given her romantic storylines. I loved Shay as much as the next person, contrary to what you probably think. I was just trying to defend Brett. Separate character. Separate argument. (Not that I wanted to argue; as I said in my other comment, just trying to give another point of view.)

    Sorry.., I didn't mean to sound so defensive, although you probably aren't reading this! I was just trying to say that I'm capable of separating my annoyance with the writers from my evaluation of a new character (without letting resentment get in the way) and I phrased it really badly, so I apologize. As for the romantic storylines with Shay, I think that all of her relationships were either incredibly dysfunctional or lazily written...nothing that anyone would be interested in shipping, which was unusual for a main character who was also very attractive. It's not that they have a problem with her being gay...it's that they don't know how to write for gay relationships in a way that's interesting enough to make viewers actually ship the relationships. Either that, or they assume that viewers will be offended, if they show too much passion, etc. I wouldn't have noticed something like this a few years ago (probably because I'm straight), but in recent times, I've watched a few shows (most of them foreign) that were a lot more balanced and open in their portrayal of gay relationships, and now I really notice the discrepancies in how they portray gay vs. straight relationships in a lot of shows.

    It's alright. Thank you for the apology. The last thing I ever wanted was for people to feel I was treating them like they were stupid. I do agree about Shay's romantic storylines. I would have loved to have seen Shay with Rafferty and it seemed like they were trying to build something there.


    I'm sorry if I ever made you feel like I thought you were inferior. More than anything, I was just trying to be a positive voice for Brett.
