That was an excellent series finale! Everything came together and all the actors pulled in wonderful work. The flashbacks this season totally made sense now and what happened to Nucky was totally right. I love that Gillian was ultimately his downfall. I watched this series from the beginning and have loved every minute of it. Sad to see it go but it was excellent.
Incredible finale, I loved it. The flashbacks cross very well with the present events and close in a perfect cycle. So the kid was Tommy Darmody after all, make sense and vengeance Gillian and Jimmy for me was really a good surprise, because I like both characters. I think the writers did a wonderful job building a backstory for Nucky, we see the good and the bad of him, btw excellent job casting his young versions.
I think we need a spin off with Capone and Luciano.
Margareth learn how to make money, I would love see Nucky back with her, but sadly this is never gonna to happen again.
That was really great, as Alan Sepinwall said in his review ( http://www.hitfix.com/whats-alan-watching/series-finale-review-boardwalk-empire-eldorado-like-father-like-son ) Nucky was responsible for the mess and downfall of 3 generations of the Darmody family the moment he took Gillian by the hand and promised to take care of her. Devastating. But a fitting end to Nucky's life.
As Tommy points out he thinks he can solve everything with money, we see him give money to Eli, have a trust fund for Gillian and encourage Margaret with the shares. But whilst money may help them he really needed to get Gillian out of that hell hole.
Other sad moments include Capone and his son, I am glad they went back to their relationship it was very touching in S3 when we saw Al struggle with his son's deafness. Stephen Graham has been fantastic throughout the show's five seasons.
Before the season started I was worried because of the time jump and the shortened season (usually it takes 8 episodes for a season to build up) but I think they did an excellent job of it and we saw conclusions for the majority of the main players and a glimpse that for some life will be ok (like Margaret) and for others well they will get their downfall in the end. The flashbacks which seemed a bit pointless early on built up brilliantly and the casting of the younger versions was spot on.
I am going to miss this show but it went out on a high at least.
I don't think that Nucky actually believed that he could solve everything with money, but, as he told Tommy in that scene, it's simply the best answer he has.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
RIP Nucky

I agree everything make sense now and I like when they use the flashbacks in the right way
ReplyDeleteI agree. Best finale since Breaking Bad
ReplyDeleteThe only critique I have is that we didn't get any insight into Tommy and what exactly led him to this point. Other than that, it was great.

Yeah I would have liked more about Tommy, Terrance Winter talks about him and what happened to his adopted family here

I agree that scene with Capone and his son was very touching and well done, Stephen Graham always make great performances as Al.
