Once Upon a Time - White Out - Review: "From Fables To Human Beings"
6 Oct 2014
Once Upon A Time PB ReviewsSo this episode is very, very good, even almost great. OUAT avoided a slump on its second episode and gathered even more momentum than before by focusing on the characters above all else. Not a lot of things happened plot wise; we don’t know how Regina is doing with the whole quest to find the writer, Anna is still missing, Emma still doesn’t control her magic, and we just barely got to see Elizabeth Mitchel by the end of the episode. And still, even though we didn’t have that much plot for the whole arc- and most of what happened was pretty much trouble of the week 101-, it did something amazingly well: it grounded our characters.
It’s not a secret that I’m not David/Charming’s number 1 fan, but I do like Anna a lot; I liked her on Frozen and I like her right now on the show, and it was really surprising to see how strong her relationship with David was, and it certainly helped him look like a real human being. My main issue with him is that he always acted too nobly to the point that his character looked a cartoony, but by having a glimpse to his beginnings with Anna it finally feels like he is an actual human being rather than just a mere fairy tale character.
Anna stopping by David’s house brought a lot of goodwill to the show; though the flashback started a bit slow I appreciated how fast it helped grounding David’s character- especially with his father's backstory. He wasn’t always the brave one, there were fights he wouldn’t pick out of a survival instinct, but that was just cowardice, and Anna helps him realize that- and she also teaches him swordfighting in the way, how cool is that? (Cool is Pun Intended).
Last week I said that I wished that Elsa and Anna were presented with some more humanity since they seemed to be only their Frozen personas instead of human characters on the show, but this week I have no trouble with Anna just being her because it helped bringing some goodwill out of David, a feat I deemed almost impossible before. I still want to see more to Anna than what the movie Frozen presented, but during this week’s episode it just works.
I like how everything is being tied up: the whole Bo Peep magical shepherd was obviously a plot device to tell David’s story and it was so over the top- and her entire fight scene was dreadful- that I really couldn’t connect with it, but I’m willing to let it slide since it did manage to bring us the interesting- and surprisingly powerful- dynamic of Anna and David.
Meanwhile in Storybrooke, Elsa is desperate to find Anna so she locks up everyone on the town- even though no one would probably leave anyway, but she couldn’t know that- inside ice walls. So Emma, David and Hook are up to investigate what’s going on since the ice wall Elsa created cut the power in the town. There are some entertaining chit chat on the way, but- as mentioned before- the plot isn’t really progressing.
And so Emma and Elsa meet and Elsa locks the two of them inside the ice wall. We get to see some really interesting interactions between the two of them; Emma manages to get through Elsa and they bond over their troubles of controlling their magic. But what I really like about this whole thing- aside from seeing Georgina Haigg and Jennifer Morrison’s performances, which are great- is that OUAT tackles an important theme Frozen left behind along the way: you have to confront your fears.
Fighting a battle that seems impossible is just a way for the show to represent those fears that shackles everyone; just like they shackled David on the past, they are shackling Elsa now, and while she hasn’t mastered her powers just yet she has the chance to stand up for herself without Anna and undo the harm she brought upon Emma. That’s a very important and huge step since the movie didn’t really allow Elsa to confront her fears, so it feels like a huge deal to see her doing so- or starting to do so- in the show.
And while all of this is taking place, Henry is growing up: he receives a message from Regina saying that she doesn’t want to see him right now and so he just shut downs for a while before realizing he has a say on the matter and he is not just on the sidelines.
That’s a big deal for the show. While he could still be the kid we knew back in season 1- whom didn’t change much during season 2 and 3- it’s starting to become noticeable that he is actually becoming a teenager and that he is changing. And that’s good.
Thankfully Jared S. Glimore’s performance has been constantly improving- peaking when he did the whole Peter Pan body switch- and I’m glad to see that he is more and more able to build a believable performance as he grows up in the show. His scene with Regina at the end of the episode was very heartwarming, and though he still needs to improve on his acting, so far things are looking much better than in the previous seasons.
So yeah; the show is still introducing us with the whole Frozen arc and while a tad slow, I’m very pleased with the way the characters have been presented thus far, and not just Elsa and Anna, but our main cast members seem to be benefitting from their introduction to; it’s like they have a chance to re-examine themselves and along the way they found something that has been somewhat missing on OUAT lately: their humanity.
Grade: B+
Stray Observations:
-Grumpy: “Look at the baby…”
Snow: “Thanks!”
Grumpy: “It’s what I would say if I could see the baby, but I can’t because it’s dark.”
-David: “I think it’s time we have a little talk about your intentions with my daughter.”
Hook: “That’s old-fashion even for my standards, and I still pay with doubloons.”
-Snow: “STOP SAYING LETTERS!”
That whole scene cracked me up.
-Ema: “Are you cold? I am freezing.”
Elsa: “Never bothered me.”
At least she didn’t sing it.
-Emma: “This is kinda… cool. Pun intended.”
-Signs of OUAT being a bit over crowded with its cast: main cast members such as Belle, Gold and Regina merely stopped by the episode, while Henry and Snow had just some moments of fair screen time.
-Elizabeth Mitchel is in town people! And she does ice creams! She must be the coolest evilist ice cream maker of all time.
Oh boy, I’m so going to enjoy this season of OUAT.
Great review :) I really enjoyed the episode. I loved that Anna was the one teaching David how to fight instead of the other way around like most people assumed form the promos. I know you said that Regina & Rumple got sidelined but it's impressive that the episode was so enjoyable and well received considering Regina & Rumple are the 2 fan favourites.
ReplyDeleteI really loved the Elsa & Emma bonding, they almost seemed like sisters to me. I really hated the fact that Emma hugged Hook instead Charming though when she escaped the ice cave. I'm not a Hook hater I just didn't like it. I agree that Jared is improving his acting and Henry seems to be maturing a lot too which I'm glad of.
I loved all the Snow scenes, they were so funny lol, "BUY A FLASHLIGHT!". That rant was hilarious. I haven't liked Elizabeth Mitchell in any of her roles but even in that short scene she had I was really impressed, I'm really looking forward to seeing more of her :)
"Elizabeth Mitchel is in town people! And she does ice creams! She must be the coolest evilist ice cream maker of all time." literally!
ReplyDeleteAs always, your reviews are wonderful! And about the main characters not having time on the screen, I felt that way too! It is starting to feel like Game of Thrones: too many characters to show in one episode. I like that the OUAT world is growing, but I still want to see my all-time favorites every week on TV!
Elizabeth Mitchell yay! I didn't think she was going to show up soon, I have a feeling she is going to be so fun in this part.
ReplyDeleteThank you, I'm flattered by what you say of my reviews, glad you like them :D
ReplyDeleteIt's good that OUAT has a vast cast, but it also limits how much we see of our favorite characters; from now on it's all about balance, how the writers decide to give them screen time
Same here! There is so much potential there I can't contain my excitement!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your words! Glad you are liking these reviews :)
ReplyDeleteI think it is a good thing that OUAT has found a place in which it can deliver even when Regina and Rumple are not in the spotlight, I like that that Elsa and Anna seems to have brought more to our main characters than we previously thought, it could easily help making this OUAT's best season to date, but we are just on episode 2! There's lots of potential and reasons to be excited, but we still need to see how it goes :).
And yeah, I also want to see more Elizabeth Mitchell! I know I may jump the gun saying this, but it's going to be fun!
I like Charming, and scenes with Anna was good, and seeing his mother again :)
ReplyDeleteI like the Elsa and Emma scenes and why these two can really bond
I love Hook, and his distress at Emma's situation, he has lost two ppl he loved the most and losing Emma is not a option for him, its understandable and he loves Emma. So glad we got a hug and hand holding and the little moments that speak volumes.
Snow Queen is at the end?
Great review! I really loved this episode, may be my favorite since a long time ago. I loved all the bonding scenes between Anna & Charming, Elsa & Emma, they both seemed quite like brother/sister moments to me. Regina & Henry and Emma & Hook were so cute and touching, two emotional hugs awww... :)
ReplyDeleteAnd wow Elizabeth Mitchell was awesome in the evil ice cream maker/ Snow Queen!
Great review I love this show because they have strong female characters loved that it was Anna that teach Charming how to sword fight and that she the reason he became the hero he is today loved seeing a piss Snow Buy A Flashlight! hope we get to see more of her as town mayor love Emma and Elsa bonding scenes along with Charming and Anna I wish Emma hug her father rather then Hook they really need give Hook more to do beside being obess with Emma I don't ship couples i like whatever the writers put together but to me Emma doesn't really seem that interest into Hook the way he is in her which make me think this pairing is not long term love the Henry and Regina scene I found it funny that Jared Gilmore is the same height as his mothers compare to first time we met him in season one he sure growing up but I do wish he can have friends his own age to hang out with don't get me wrong love his moments with his moms and grandparents
ReplyDeleteThis was a very good review. The episode was great and I think this is going to be one of the best stroy arcs (if not the best) on OUaT. I loved the carachter development in this episode and it didnt bother me at all that we didn get much story development this week because the episode was still great. Anna and Elsa were very good and the casting for them was done perfectly (altough I would still prefer Kristen Bell as Elsa, Gorgina Haig is also great). The only thing I didnt like about this episode that much was Bo Peep but I still get why she was there. I cnat wait to se what happens next I sae Rumples reaction when David and Hook were asking about Anna and I am dying to know what he did whit Anna.
ReplyDeleteI share your dislike of Charming, he was pretty much useless and does nothing but go to the gym. I liked we dipped a bit into his character last night, I still hope there is more to him and his backstory.
ReplyDeleteThey used Elsa and Anna so well in this episode. Hope their character development will continue and they reunite in SB.
EM was so good in this 30sex she appeared. Quite teasing. According to the lastest spoilers she is interested in Emma, could launch an interesting storyline for Emma if she goes icy.
Emma hugging hook and not her father kinda surprised me too & i'm a die-hard fan of hook!
ReplyDeleteEmma is about actions and this episode she shownd it in her hugging him and clinging to him and interlacing their hands. I assume you all being here on spoiler tv page have read pretty much all the spoiilers and interview. Emma is INTO him, and is finally opening her heart. :)
ReplyDeleteI think it made sense that the way it was done she was into Hook's arms, it was impactful whilst Charming was helping and tending to Elsa.
ReplyDeleteIt easily could've been the other way IMO!
ReplyDelete"That whole scene cracked me up. By the way, who was taking care of baby Neal at that moment?"
ReplyDeleteHenry? He is old enough to take care of his uncle.
Great review. I loved this episode. The flashbacks were great and Anna is so adorable... Plus,I also liked Elsa/Emma scenes. They have a lot of things in common and I think they can learn from each other. It's true there were characters that didn't appear but ouat has so many charactersthat it'
ReplyDeleteActually, he was there with Snow the whole time. I thought I deleted that paragraph
ReplyDeleteOk. Best Regards!
ReplyDeleteThe moment I saw Elizabeth my brain went "That's it"
ReplyDeleteSince this show love to base their stories into fmilies, even though this time around no one is related to the min characters, I'm pretty sure there is a really big connection here.
So, the king and queen of Arandelle "once upon time" couldn't conceive, so they followed one of this series guide books and got Rumplestilskin to get them a baby, an amazing and beautiful blonde girl, what they didn't know was that the girl was actually the daughter of the Ice Queen, which was owned by her to Rumple because of their contract of the firstborn rule. After Elsa was brought they, miraculously, conceived a child, but Elsa was the older and they loved her like their own, so she was kept as their heir. Once Elsa's gift became dangerous, they sought Rumple, who was occupied with Regina at the time, to help them control it, but never made. The ice queen doesn't know that Els is her daughter, so she's fair game so far.
