The actor is in final negotiations to play billionaire Tony Stark in the third installment, which is slated to begin production in the Spring for a May 6, 2016 release. Downey is already set to suit up as Iron Man for next year’s “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “The Avengers 3.”
The deal is significant for the Marvel cinematic universe considering the plot will pit Stark against Captain America’s alter-ego Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, as they feud over the Superhero Registration Act, which forces anyone with superhuman abilities to reveal their identities to the U.S. government and agree to act as a police force for the authorities.
Stark supports the program, but Rogers does not, saying it threatens civil liberties, causing sides to be taken and Rogers, among others, to go on the run to avoid arrest. The moral question and battle with his Avengers teammate essentially makes Stark a villain of sorts in “Captain America 3,” providing Downey with a meaty role he could play out into future Marvel films, including a fourth “Avengers.”

ReplyDeleteThat seems ... not like Stark. At all. Didn't he resist sharing his designs with the government? Isn't he the one who was most suspicious of SHIELD in the Avengers? Is he not the most difficult member of the team to actually play by the team rules, and now he's, what, champion of conformity and rules? Especially after the HYDRA reveal, I can't believe the anti-establishment, anti-war genius is suddenly all for super powered people being on the front lines for an unstable government. I understand why they want to do this kind of story, but I'm wondering how they're going to make this make sense.

I'm a little skeptical of this whole thing.A couple of weeks ago the Russo brothers said that it would be highly unlikely for the Civil War to be included in the MCU.I'm gonna wait for an official confirmation.
ReplyDeleteHmm not a huge Marvel reader (I read Daredevil and the odd Hulk comic) but Civil War sounds really cool. I'm not a huge CA fan the only reason I watched TWS was because of Black Widow. If Iron Man is in it I'll definately be watching.

Whenever RDJ does anything, I'm always 100% interested (bear in mind, by anything I mean standing straight up in front of a camera for an hour, I truly don't care). But this is amazing because it also has the potential to be awesome. And it makes sense, IMO, considering what Chris Evans said about leaving the shield after CA3. I could see him dying here, or deciding he should step down.
ReplyDeleteNah...Chris Evans has signed on for six movies. That would only be movie five. But I think that the movie will end with the Avengers taking different path, which would explain the absence of some of them for Avengers 3, and Marvel having the opportunity to include the Cap in a later Avengers movie (which would also lessen the pressure that RDJ HAS to be in Avengers 4, they can just as well built this one around Chris Evans)...and with the break, they might be able to convince Chris Evans to sign on for more.

ReplyDeleteThat was my thought too...but perhaps they have come up with another reason why the Avengers split up. I mean, what is the point of a registration act in an universe in which everyone knows the secret identity of the heroes? And in which the complete database of Shield with a list of all the special people they found being freely available? I guess the concept of HAVING to fight for earth might be a bone of contention, but I have trouble to believe that any of the current Avengers would agree to that.
ReplyDeleteThe X-Men? I hope there is no rumour that they intend to do that...I never liked the X-Men mixed up with the other Superheroes. It just never made sense to me that one kind of power is welcome, but being a mutant is treated like some kind of disease.

ReplyDeleteAs far as I know they have no plans to add the X-Men (or the Fantastic Four) in as Marvel/Fox aren't on the best terms apparently. The hot rumor was that Marvel wanted to introduce the 'Inhumans' as an X-Men replacement.
ReplyDeleteSpider-Man may be added in though. In recent days apparently Sony and Marvel have been talking about something. Sony and Marvel are apparently on more friendly terms too so it's possible they may come to an agreement on merging the universes.
Yes makes sense, the whole Thanos plot is getting a little dry and from what I hear I am personally looking forward to the Civil War storyline more anyway.
