Gracepoint - Pilot - Review: "Here We Go"

A young boy, Danny Solano, is murdered in a small town where everyone is a friend, and also a suspect.

Review and Recap of the Premiere.

From next weeks review , I will be introducing an episode suspect (who I think looks the most guilty that episode)

Dark and chilling from the onset , Gracepoint does a good job within the first 10 seconds , with it's perfect camera shot's of different locations which gave off a feeling that this town was abandoned. We quickly see a chilling image of Danny on a cliff side with blood dripping down his fingers... and so the mystery begins.

We meet the Solano family (Danny's family) straight after , it is a typical school day and work day for them. A mother's instinct kicks in straight away when Beth wonders why Danny has forgotten his lunch and had a troubling look on her face like she already knew something bad has happened to him. We see Mark Solano take a walk towards his work , greeting everybody on his way there which just shows us how many potential suspects there could be as don't forget everybody is a suspect in this small town.

The show really starts at the point when the body is on the beach this is when we see our two main characters Emmet Carver and Ellie Miller begin a partnership that they will need if they are going to solve this mystery.
A really good scene just before that was when Beth was looking for Danny in her car and she gets out to see what the hold up was heading towards Gracepoint beach. A Woman told her "they have a found a body" Somehow she already knew it was Danny her gut was telling her it was him. She wasn't wrong because , it was.
At the beach you see two people following Beth's every movement Jack Reinhold and Susan Wright they both look like they are hiding something , but they could just be two nosy people if they are hiding something I am sure we will find out what soon enough. Susan Wright in particular looks very suspicious , she is lurking every where watching everything that happens related to the case. Why is she so interested?
The Solano family is distraught , they don't know what to do. You really feel for the family , as it's one thing for an adult to die , but a child just makes it harder to bare.
They are trying to cope , but it is hard when Owen Burke (the Journalist) releases the information about the identity of the victim. He is instantly dislikeable as that is a heartless thing to do , especially after Ellie didn't confirm anything and said "we will release a statement at the appropriate time". Doing what he did just makes me want to punch him. We can probably rule him out of the potential suspects , though since only an idiot would tweet about someone they had killed. We find out also that the police did confirm that it was a suspected homicide not a suicide since the rocks around Danny's body had been placed there and there are no evidence to presume he jumped off the cliff. I wonder if in the opening scene with Danny dripping blood from his hands if he was trying to get away from his killer and then thought about jumping off. Perhaps the killer persuaded him not to jump only to then kill him and move his body to the beach. How did nobody see this happen though , as it is in a prime location in the town and surely someone would be walking past even if it is late.

At the end of the episode we see our first suspect it is Tom Miller , who is drastically cleaning his hardrive out and deleting all phone calls and text messages from Danny.
He is hiding something , he and Danny clearly had a huge disagreement if he is deleting everything from him. I wonder what he is hiding and why he doesn't want people to find out Danny called him. Maybe Danny called Tom the night he was killed or maybe Tom saw something related to Danny being killed. I am sure we will find out as soon. I don't think Tom is capable of murder , but he is still a suspect in my eyes until the truth about what he was doing is revealed.
We also find out amongst Danny's possessions there should have been a cell phone , but there isn't. This means that the killer took the cell phone with him/her as Danny always had it with him we learn. Could the killer of texted Tom using Danny's phone? , which is why he deletes all the messages? It is doubtful, but nothing is not probable.

Summary
The pilot was very good , it was a good introduction into the series. The pilot did everything right , it introduced us to most of the characters , the dialogue was nicely written , the actors had solid performances , also some of the visuals were stunning. The first episode set us up for the rest of the season , and I can not wait to find out the truth behind this mystery. A great start!

What did you think of the pilot? Is it better or worse than Broadchurch? Will you be continuing to watch? Who do you think killed Danny? What do you think Tom is hiding?

Thanks for the review and I couldn't agree more! It's amazing how it feels so familiar and yet so different. The visuals really have me! :)

  3. Yeah the visuals are great , I might go as far to say they are slightly better than Broadchurch's. I don't know what it is about Gracepoint , but it just feels better than Broadchurch. Maybe it might be because I actually know who all the actors are nearly where as with Broadchurch I only knew David.

  4. I feel similarly. I'm American so it might just be it's closer to home. I thought Broadchurch was a little unique for UK TV shows, but it still felt like a UK series....

  5. I'm from the UK so it did feel like a typical ITV show , like we get Midsomer Murders over here etc. I much prefer American TV the overal quality is much better and the level of shows that gets produced is endless. I cant remember a time when I last watched something live in the UK.

  6. I loved Broadhurch and like this i hope they change the murderer so it isnt the same repetitive s/l

  7. They will be changing the murderer , Tennant and I think one of the producers said the ending will be different. (So presumably the killer) by episode 6 or 7 (can't remember) the story changes dramatically and steers away from Broadchuch and takes its own route which leaves the door wide open to who the killer is.

  8. Thanks for letting me know i was kind of worried when the first episode was exactly like broadchurch now im back to guessing who the killer is this time around :)

  9. yeah they did say in an interview the first two episodes of Broadchurch were a good enough starting point for Gracepoint. So expect episode 2 to pan out like that did. I have managed to watch up to episode 7 and there is a least 6 people with a good enough motive.

  13. I´ve never really watched Broadchurch. It has been on TV so many times and I´ve only caught ten minutes here and there. It is so similar to Danish crime shows, and I had had enough of those.

But I´m really glad I checked out Gracepoint. I like Anna Gunn, so it was mostly because of her that I decided to watch. I thought it was a great start and I can´t wait till next week.

  17. Is Capaldi any good as the doctor? Is he better than Matt Smith (I hated Matt Smith)

  18. I loved Anna Gunn on Breaking Bad. I know she got a lot of hate, but I always enjoyed her character and she did an amazing job. But it it is good to see her in a completely different role this time.
I never watched Doctor Who. :-)
I look forward to the next few episodes to get a good feel of the show.

  19. There is no denying she did an amazing job , she won countless awards for her portrayal as Skyler , I just didn't like the "family dinners" and here constant moaning. She is very good in this none the less

  20. I cant really tell Capaldi's doctor is a lot more comedic and grumpier and i really enjoy him as the doctor i loved Matt but Peter brings his own to the doctor which is enjoyable

  21. Peter Capadi brings a while new dimension to the way that the Doctor is portrayed. He is older, more sarcastic, condescending, and alien than previous versions. Capaldi referres to humans as pudding brains. No argument there. He is no David Remnant, but still enjoyable to watch.

  22. Glad to hear it, I will definitely be checking the series out soon.

  23. Can someone clarify something for me? How is this not exactly like Broadchurch? Is this just an American remake of it? But David Tennant is still in it... lol, colour me confused.

  24. The first two episodes will be identical , to Broadchurch's as the writers felt it was a good place to start. The massive changes will happen in episode 7 , where the series takes its own route away from Broadchurch's. The whole of episode 7 has not been shown in Broadchuch.

I for one thought that the first episode of Grace-point was very good. I think within the next 9 episodes there will be a whole lot of skeletons coming out of everyone's closets. I think that the dad is lying about being at work the night his son was killed but I don't think that he killed his son. I also think that the older lady with the German-Shepard saw something that night that is yet to be known. I don't think that the young reporter had anything to do with the murder because if he did he would not be trying to attract anymore attention to the investigation. I don't think for one second that the mom killed her boy because she is blaming her self for not checking in on him after 9:00 o'clock the night before she has showed more emotion for "Danny's" death then anyone. Also I don't think that the female cop's son & Danny's best friend killed him ether I do think that he was deleting those things because his mom told him the cop's were going to talk to him and maybe he was scared that he would get in trouble for something other than killing the little boy. The reason I am wringing my comment this way is, After the 1st episode there was a web site you could go to "Suspecteveryone.com" and vote as to who you thought the real killer was. Well I went to the web site and voted and was shocked to see that almost 60% of the votes as to the real killer was The cop's Son and Danny's Best Friend I don't think that it could be the little boy because the medical examiner said that Danny died from 1 HARD BLOW TO THE HEAD "Blunt Force Trauma" So here is who I think killed the little boy "Danny" and the one I voted for. I think in the end the true killer will be the female cop's husband I think that there son and Danny had been sneaking out and meeting up at night after everyone was asleep I think something happened and the Cop's Husband/father killed the boy weather it be accidental or intentional..... But that is JMO Please tell who U think the real killer is I just dont see why so many people think that it was Danny's Best Friend
