After one of the season's most outstanding premieres, CBS's Elementary continues on from its excellent start to its third season, in its second episode, titled "The Five Orange Pipz."
This really is a marvelous hour of television, which you'll get to see for yourself on Thursday, November 6, 10|9c. It's beautifully written, has the one-of-a-kind humor that the series is known for, and the case is very well thought out too. The duo of Holmes and Watson take charge of a case involving the murders of two men, one the owner of a toy company, the other being his lawyer. The title comes from the events that transpire moments before the pair were killed, and Holmes and Watson come to the awkward decision of taking a body each.
The episode focuses prominently on Kitty Winter, and we watch her walk in the shadows of these master investigators as their bond begins to rekindle. Ophelia Lovibond does an outstanding job in the role - if last Thursday's premiere didn't sell you on the character, you will be after this episode. We see a young woman who has had a pretty tough run, and needs a shoulder to lean on. It's fascinating to watch Holmes as he tries to work out how best to nurture what he sees as tremendous talent, while Watson, having been there, don that, seeks to assist both without getting in the way. This will continue for a wee while yet, which is really pleasing to see.
While the unqualified trio try to navigate each other, the qualified duo remain an integral part of the episode. Catpain Gregson and Detective Bell both share moments with Kitty. They also have to punch well above their pay grade to get to the bottom of the homicide. Oh, and Holmes shows off by solving a case pretty much instantly.
I won't spoil the fun any more, but "The Five Orange Pipz" is an excellent follow-up episode from last week's premiere. You'd be silly not to check it out.

ReplyDeleteNice text. Im even more anxious for the next thursday now :D
ReplyDeleteLoved last nights episode and after reading this I can't wait for next weeks. Thanks Jimmy!
ReplyDeleteThe title may come from the events of the episode but it is also a nice callback to Five Orange Pips ,a story from one of the 56 short stories of Sherlock Holmes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Five_Orange_Pips
ReplyDeleteHmm. Looked up pipz. It means people or persons according to the Urban Dictionary. So, Five Orange People. Wonder what it means. Tanning failure? Or does it refer to these people? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajneesh_movement
Cool. Thursday's ep was awesome. Kitty is an interesting new addition.
ReplyDeleteYou'll see what pipz means ;-)
ReplyDeleteYeah, as I said, Ophelia Lovibond is perfect for the role
ReplyDeleteKinda don't like kitty yet don't know what it is but I don't trust her
ReplyDeleteThough a big fan of the series I was just a teeny tad pulling for a stronger premiere episode than what we got last week and hope this one does the trick. Enjoy your reviews and enthusiasm for one of my favorite series. Hope you are correct in your feeling that Kitty will impress more this week because for me she could just as easily not been around last week. Looking forward to a good episode. Thanks.
ReplyDeletereally looking forward to the ep as the premiere was an excellent return from where last season left off and I was on the fence with the intro of the Kitty character, and I like the decision to take her perspective in this ep in order to give us background and to fill in her character some more.
ReplyDeleteWho is the actress who played the US attorney? Cannot find her name in any credits.
