After one of the season's most outstanding premieres, CBS's Elementary continues on from its excellent start to its third season, in its second episode, titled "The Five Orange Pipz."
This really is a marvelous hour of television, which you'll get to see for yourself on Thursday, November 6, 10|9c. It's beautifully written, has the one-of-a-kind humor that the series is known for, and the case is very well thought out too. The duo of Holmes and Watson take charge of a case involving the murders of two men, one the owner of a toy company, the other being his lawyer. The title comes from the events that transpire moments before the pair were killed, and Holmes and Watson come to the awkward decision of taking a body each.
The episode focuses prominently on Kitty Winter, and we watch her walk in the shadows of these master investigators as their bond begins to rekindle. Ophelia Lovibond does an outstanding job in the role - if last Thursday's premiere didn't sell you on the character, you will be after this episode. We see a young woman who has had a pretty tough run, and needs a shoulder to lean on. It's fascinating to watch Holmes as he tries to work out how best to nurture what he sees as tremendous talent, while Watson, having been there, don that, seeks to assist both without getting in the way. This will continue for a wee while yet, which is really pleasing to see.
While the unqualified trio try to navigate each other, the qualified duo remain an integral part of the episode. Catpain Gregson and Detective Bell both share moments with Kitty. They also have to punch well above their pay grade to get to the bottom of the homicide. Oh, and Holmes shows off by solving a case pretty much instantly.
I won't spoil the fun any more, but "The Five Orange Pipz" is an excellent follow-up episode from last week's premiere. You'd be silly not to check it out.
