Shirley, Community fans are going to be disappointed with this news. But alas, it's true: Yvette Nicole Brown is departing the fan favorite comedy after five seasons.
Brown — who has played Shirley Bennett since the 2009 launch of Community — confirms to TV Guide Magazine that she has asked to be released from her contract for personal reasons. Sony Pictures TV and executive producers Dan Harmon and Chris McKenna have honored her request.
The actress says the change was necessary in order to take care of her ailing father. "My dad needs daily care and he needs me," Brown says. "The idea of being away 16 hours a day for five months, I couldn't do it. It was a difficult decision for me to make, but I had to choose my dad."
That means Brown won't be a part of the group that makes the transition from NBC to Yahoo! Screen for Season 6. "Yvette was an integral part of Community and is irreplaceable. We are sad to see her go and wish her the very best," Harmon and McKenna said in a joint statement.
Brown says Harmon "has been so wonderful about it all. He told me, 'Yvette, I'm praying for your dad.'" The actress also thanked Sony for allowing her to take a recurring role on CBS' midseason reboot of The Odd Couple.

ReplyDeleteMan, we've just lost too many original characters :/ And too few new characters who actually add much substance to the dynamic. They definitely need to find 2-4 new stars to help re-energize the show a bit.

I understand her reasons, and I really hope the best for her and her father, but DAMN!!!!!! DAAAAAMN!!!!!!!!! I'll miss her like hell :(

ReplyDeleteAs for the show, not sure but maybe a cast changeup isn't the worst thing, if they intend to do a semi-reboot (again) they could have the yahoo era stick out more and could possibly open up more creative potential.
Oh boy, Community is one of these shows where I'm glad that they're still around but am completely confused how.
this is saddening news being that the show is already Troy-less, but her decision to care for her ailing father was a no brainer and I her family the best
ReplyDeleteShirley may not have been one of my favorites, but I love Yvette and I completely respect her decision to leave, it is absolutely the right choice. I hope for the best for her father and her family. And if they can get her back for a cameo here or there, and maybe for the movie, then I'll be able to say "That's nice!"
ReplyDeleteIncreasingly I wished Community hadn't been saved and just ended with S5. I feel terrible for Yvette though.
ReplyDeleteThey need to throw a bunch of money at glover now more than ever to bring him back. I dont know how good season 6 can be with only 3 of the originals.

ReplyDeleteSad Shirley is going, I always felt they didn't reach the full potential of her character. Still it's understandable, and as she says she is open to guest spots, hopefully she will return for the movie/finale etc.

ReplyDeleteWhat a sad way to look at things. There are still things that need to be addressed and wrapped up in season 6, and the 4 characters who always got the most screen-time are still there. As well as Oscar winner Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong (who's the biggest star the show has thanks to the hangover films).
ReplyDeleteSomething has been lost for me though when Troy left as well. I just sometimes wonder if ending after S3 might have been best for the series creatively.
