Chicago PD - Get My Cigarettes - Review
Oct 4, 2014
Chicago PD MR Reviews“In our house, we were supposed to trust each other. So I’ve told you everything: good, bad, ugly, illegal. I’ve laid all of it out. You should have told me, ‘cause I would have told you.”
We are still very much getting to know these characters, who they are, who they were, and who this team is as a whole. Voight initially told his team, “Tell me the truth, so I can lie for you.” This team prides itself on being honest with each other, but they each have pasts that no one seems to know much about, yet. This week, we get glimpses into the pasts of Lindsay, Voight, and Halstead, a trio that I’m sure will be heavily featured this season.
Three things you need to know going into the episode:
1. The team knows about Voight’s deal with Internal Affairs.
2. Lindsay is still furious about #1.
3. There is a $100,000 bounty on Halstead’s head.
Within just the first few minutes of the show, the team has two victims, Billy Fagan and Nick Marcello. Both were killed with a shotgun and left with a single dollar bill pinned to their chests. The case gets personal, as Nick was a childhood friend of Voight. When the team visits Nick’s wife, Tricia, she says Nick “retired” long ago (from a less-than-reputable line of work). Later, however, Tricia admits to Voight that Nick was involved in some shady business.
Of course, the initial suspect turns out to have an alibi, and the team moves on. Olinsky points out that they have only seen a handful of shotgun murders through the years. That leaves them with two options: a pro, or a redneck. Or a third, courtesy of Halstead, “A pro redneck. I’m calling it.” The team didn’t laugh, Jay, but I did.
The team learns both Fagan and Marcello were partners in a shell company, running some shady business (duh). Connected with this shell company is a dry-cleaning business, run by a man named Dale Hansen. When Halstead and Antonio visit Dale (in the hospital, where is wife lies unconscious after an overdose), they learn Fagan and Marcello weren’t too happy with Dale, and threatened his life.
Voight visits another old friend, Don Enrietto. Something’s fishy about him, and he is also miffed about the IA deal. Don says he’s not connected with Dale and the murders, but my gut says, “liar.”
“You were always the one who was running his mouth the most, and had the least to say,” said Voight. Isn’t that always the case?
Another shotgun victim, another dollar bill. Is it bad that all I’m thinking is, “Mo’ money, mo’ problems?”
This time, a girl was left alive in the trunk of the car next to the victim. The girl is the latest victim’s daughter, and got a good look at the killer. They use her to create a sketch of the killer. When Ruzek brings the sketch upstairs, Antonio and Halstead immediately recognize the killer as Dale Hansen’s son, Nate. Nate was enrolled in a military academy and disappeared days after his mom overdosed.
Per Olinsky’s advice, Jay changes up his routine and visits a bar other than Molly’s. It’s implied he used to frequent this bar, as he knows (and is quite flirty with) the bartender, Mandy. Before the flirting can continue Jay gets a call and leaves suddenly (thank goodness). Someone broke into his apartment, and his landlord tells him it’s the only one in the building that was broken into. Of course it’s not random. Someone is hunting him.
Erin meets up with her mom, who tells her she’s been sober for 7 months. Momma Lindsay wants to reconcile and reminisce about the happier times, but Erin is extremely unwilling. When Erin was younger, she found Momma Lindsay overdosed and passed out on the kitchen floor.
“Do you know what you said to me when you woke up? ‘Get my cigarettes.’”
When they talk about Voight, Momma Lindsay reminds Erin, “He’s not your blood.” But, blood only goes so far. This unit is family, and that’s one thing this series is out to prove.
Later, the team pays a visit to the Hansen house. Dale and his daughter now know about Nate. The already deceased victims had shown up at the house, which is how Nate knew who to go after. Dale gives them the big boss’ name, Nate’s logical next target; Don Enrietto.
They find Don, still alive (though maimed). Halstead finds Nate, or rather, Nate finds Halstead. After a pursuit, Halstead, Lindsay, and Atwater lose Nate along the train tracks leading into a tunnel. They get a tip, Nate’s gone to the hospital, where his mom is staying.
Halstead is able to connect with Nate and gets him to put down the gun. “I was in the army…I know exactly what you’re dealing with. We’re trained to protect. That’s what you did.”
I am so happy with Halstead’s character development. I do hope we learn more about his time in the army. He gets a bit of the spotlight this week to lead into next week’s Halstead-centric episode.
Erin meets Jay at the bar after meeting with her mom, and proceeds to down some drink quickly. When she asks for another, Mandy flashes a smile at Jay.
“You’re sleeping with her.”
“What? No!”
“You’re a horrible liar.”
“We played Scrabble, like once, at her apartment.”
Jay needs a place to stay until this bounty thing blows over, and asks to stay with Erin. Please, please, PLEASE let this happen.
“You gonna try to play Scrabble with me, too?”
“I will be the perfect gentleman, as usual.”
I think they should play Scrabble. They should have a Scrabble marathon. But, before we can hope for more flirting between the two, Erin sees a man walk in with a gun, pointed at Jay. They duck in time, but shots are fired, and Mandy is hit.
What did you think of the episode? Which character’s backstory do you want to see the most? I, for one, am looking forward to lots of Halstead next week.

Thanks for the great review Meghan, really enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteGlad we have someone reviewing this show.
Looking forward to Halstead as well.
I loved it. The Erin and Jay moments. They are so cute together. I really want them to play scrabble. And Jay I loved his scenes. I also loved everyone else. My favorite show. I want to know more about Halstead, his family. Erin's been calling Halstead by his first name a lot. Love your review
ReplyDeleteLol at the "Scrabble marathon" sugestion. I so agree with that one. I m so happy we get a Jay centric ep so early in the season and I totally agree with you on the development of his character. I hope it continues bc for me he is one of the reasons I watch CP. Jay can be a badass but he is also sweet, funny and has the most adorable facial expressions. that s one of the reasons I love him with Erin bc he makes her laugh and we see a different side of her. Kelli, although my favorite in CF is too intense and so him and Erin are just no fun.
ReplyDeleteGreat episode and very nice review. I liked that they continued with a story in relation to Voight's past, I think there is a lot to explore. It also brought an arc to Erin, because she also is a part of Voights past. A note to the Voight and Erin story: Thankfully she isn't holding a grudge for too long. And that she told Voight everything is not really true, if I recall correctly at the end of season 1 ''she was boxed in really bad'' when she knew her friend had killed somebody as a teenager and she wanted to take the fall for it. It seemed at that point that this story was new to Voight, because Erin told Jay she did not want to go to Voight.
ReplyDeleteThe ending of this episode really gave us something to look forward to next week, I liked that Jay apparently knew that Erin was meeting her mother which showed a level of closeness of the two. Same as she was calling his lie regarding Meghan, especially because in this episode he showed that he is actually a good lier when got the kid to drop the gun. To me that meant that he is open to her. The character development of Jay ist great, I also love his variety of facial expressions. I cannot wait for next week, when Jay will put out himself as bait. How will Erin hide from Voight that she cares about him? I think it will be interesting to see.
Atwater's character is still a mystery to meet, plus I am not sure I want to know more about him. Too bad they killed of Jin, he was way more entertaining, also with his small crush on Erin. I think they could use a new tech guy, Nadia is not enough....
Hmmm not sure how I feel about Voight's redemption. I like his edge...and the fact that he dabbles in the grey....
ReplyDeleteI think that Voight is still working in the grey - we saw the safe filled with money, I bet he did not get it legally nor is he willing to report it. He might be on a way to redemption but he is nowhere there yet. Just for Jin he had to come forward and to open up about his relation to IA.
ReplyDeleteThanks! It's becoming my favorite show as well. Love learning more about Halstead, I think he may be my favorite character.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree. Erin and Kelly are too similar, Jay is a much better option.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDeleteI love learning about Voight's past as well, and I hope that we learn more (and I'm sure we will) about how Lindsay came to be so close with him.
I caught that bit too, about Lindsay telling Voight that she doesn't lie to him, when she has. I also love that she seems to be going to Jay more than Voight.
Atwater definitely hasn't been given the character development he needs. I don't mind Nadia, but she can't fill the void on her own!
I do too. I think at his core, he's a good man. His "flaw" is that he isn't afraid to outside the lines to keep the criminals in line.
ReplyDeleteSo true, I am very excited for tonight! It seems that Severide needs police assistance in next weeks episode, so there is room for another cross over, which I don't like so much as I don't want Severide anywhere close to Erin.
ReplyDeleteAt some point the writers have to make a choice if they want to give Erin and Severide a real relation ship or not. I rather prefer not because I want her with Jay on the long run. All that flirting and closeness between Jay and Erin is in jeopardy if Erin enters a more serious relationship with Severide. Severide is the most interesting character on Chicago Fire with all his flaws and weaknesses but still I don't want him with Erin.
