On the 50th anniversary of its debut, classic TV sitcom Bewitched is eyeing a comeback. I’ve learned that Sony Pictures TV is shopping a new version of the supernatural comedy, which ran on ABC from 1964 to 1972. I hear there is already interest from multiple networks in the modern-day take, which is being penned by The Vow writers Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein.
he project hails from Lucy Fisher and Douglas Wick’s Red Wagon Entertainment, which produced Columbia Pictures’ 2005 Bewitched film starring Nicol Kidman and Will Ferrell, and also teamed with Sony TV on a potential series remake at CBS in 2011. Also producing the new version is Management 360, which reps Kohn and Silverstein, along with CAA.
Created by Sol Saks and executive produced by Harry Ackerman, Bewitched starred Elizabeth Montgomery as a witch married to an ordinary mortal man and chronicles the way her powers and her wicked family get in the way of her efforts to live a normal, magic-free life as a typical suburban housewife.

I love this show. I hope it gets picked up. However, it would have to be the right actresses to take on Samantha and Tabitha.
ReplyDeleteSome concepts are very "of their time" and Bewitched seems like one of them to me. Shows like this and I Dream of Genie are better left alone.
ReplyDeleteOMG, stop it with the remakes and reboots.
ReplyDeleteI would actually like a new updated version of this show.. The original was very much a product of it's time so I'm curious what it'll be like set in our time.
ReplyDeleteI imagine a mix between the original, Charmed and Sabrina TTW and since I loved all those shows it could be pretty good.
Ok, I could like this... I'm surprised by the fact that I actually like the idea. It could be fun.
ReplyDeleteOnly a really great casting choice can make this work. I like the show back in the day, would like to see it redone
ReplyDeleteI vote for Sarah Michelle Gellar as Samantha Stephens.
ReplyDeleteTabitha likely wouldn't be born if the show is starting from the beginning of Samantha & Darrin's courtship and marriage.
Instead of a 'remake' how about a modern day continuation ( Charmed + Salam + AMH - Coven ) with Sarah Michelle as a 35 year old Tabitha Stephens.
Also staring would be Tabitha's 45 year old younger mortal brother Adam, her 281 year old immortal mother Samantha, 500 year old immortal grandparents Endora and Maurice, her 50 year old childhood best friend and now husband Johnathan Tate { Larry & Louise's son }, her immortal relatives aunt Clara, uncle Arthur, cousin Serena, Esmeralda, Doctor Bombay, Elspeth { Samantha's childhood nanny }, and mortal grandparents Frank & Phyllis Stephens.
( Nicholas Brendon as Adam , Jessica Lange as Samantha and Fionnula Flanagan as Endora )
Elizabeth Montgomery was 31 when "Bewitched" began + 50 year anniversary = 81
Tabitha - Jan 13 1966 = 48 and Adam - Oct 16 1969 = 45
I agree that revamping them and trying to fit those concepts in today can be a little tricky.
ReplyDelete(However I will say both shows have aged quite well in spite of their concepts being dated)
