One of the questions that was asked concerned the introduction of Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer in the Arrow season premiere, which is called “The Calm.” Fans of DC Comics, of course, know another side of Ray — he shrinks into the tiny titan known as The Atom. Could shrinking and a blue and red costume be in his TV future on Arrow?
“I think anything is possible. My instinct is that if Ray Palmer’s going to shrink, he’ll probably shrink on another show,” Marc Guggenheim told us. “With The Flash in existence, there’s no real compelling reason for us to do super powers on Arrow. We can bring characters to Flash to have super powers. We have plans for Ray that don’t involve shrinking, but our plans for Ray are actually really cool.”
Later, Guggenheim talked about how much fun it is to have Ray Palmer as part of the series. “Ray is a joy to write for, because his banter with Felicity is a lot of fun. It’s a quality of the show that we’ve never seen before,” he said, adding that Ray Palmer’s story will be one of the mysteries of Season 3. Some of Palmer’s plans for Starling City and Queen Consolidated will be revealed in Wednesday’s season premiere.

Although I like that the Flash will have more superpowers than Arrow, I kinda hate how they're excluding superpowers strictly for that show. It makes it seem like they're gonna come up with some pretty ridiculous crossovers just to make it happen, and no doubt there will come a time where someone using powers in Arrow is actually pretty damn plausible (it's also hard to see powers in Flash and pretend they don't exist in the Arrow world).
ReplyDeleteBut I do think shrinking isn't that important. Nothing to rush into.
So then why have him on? Probably could have used another non-powered character. Unless that other show remark is a hint that the Atom could be a spinoff down the road
ReplyDeleteI guess that means no canary cry for BC. TBH I prefer it more grounded in "reality". I liked that it didn't have superpowers before.
ReplyDeleteThat's such BS- then why even have him on Arrow (other than as a love interest) instead of introducing him on The Flash? If they don't want a character to have powers, introduce a character that DOESN'T have powers, I'm sure they have plenty to choose from.
ReplyDeletewell they were originally going to use blue beetle but weren't allowed too. But I agree this is BS. Why would you use a character that has powers on a show and then not use his powers? Seems like he's only there for the love triangle lol. They should have just used a different non-superpowered character.
ReplyDeleteWell, it might be more tech oriented, but Blue Beetle has powers too, though my only exposure to him has been through Young Justice. I can't believe they brought a superhero character to the show and they'll only use him for a love triangle. Seriously? If this is really the case, I'll be pissed, they could use any non-super powered obscure DC character, no need to use The Atom.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, the "grounded" reality for Arrow was a big draw for me, it's also why I'm still iffy on watching The Flash. I prefer they keep powers out of Arrow or at least limit them to "science" based stuff.
ReplyDeleteIt's for the press. If they bring in an unpowered character then most people wont care. But the minute it's someone with powers in the comics, people start to talk and build hype.
ReplyDeleteConsidering they're bringing in Ra's freaking al Ghul, I don't think they needed one of their million love interests this season to be known superhero, unless they WERE going to go there with him.
ReplyDeleteNeither Blue Beatle nor Atom have actual powers they're both more "science" based (IIRC) one has a super suit, the other has the White Dwarf Star belt.
ReplyDeleteAs for powers, I always figured shrinking was out, they've been pretty adamant since March/April that powers would be on Flash and Arrow was going back to S1 reality based powers. In fact they even said at the start of S2 that Mirakuru was just being used as a gateway for powers on Flash.
I figure Atom's suit (which BR says he's seen the concept art) will have powers but not the really out there stuff, no shrinking, flying, traveling through phone lines, etc. Probably strength, agility, etc...stuff that can be (sort of) grounded in reality.
Right, I knew BB was tech based powers, why can't they use that as an explanation? We're not talking Mirakuru or Particle accelerator accident, I think they can find some mumbo jumbo explanation. I also don't want his suit to give him powers other than the ones he's meant to have, or there's no point in this specific character. Just ship him over to The Flash where they can actually utilize the character without bending him so out of shape, his only resemblance to his comic counterpart is the name (i.e Vertigo).
ReplyDeleteBut he does have those powers, at least according to the wiki that I read.
ReplyDeleteAtom can use the belt/suit to increase his mass (making him super strong). He could also use his belt to alter his mass allowing him to fly. Obviously flying is out but he could alter his mass allowing for high jumps.
The last one, Atom could phase into different dimensions allowing him to disappear..not happening but they could come up with some tech mumbo jumbo that allows the suit to reflect light aiding in camouflage and keeping him off of heat signatures and stuff.
Well you know The Atom better than I do, I just know him from the little I've seen of him on Young Justice and from what people say about him, so I mostly knew about the shrinking. You're still basically saying he won't have most of the powers he's known to have, so I'd prefer him on The Flash where he can actually be himself, powers and all and not Atom-lite.
ReplyDeleteTruth be told I really don't really care about the atom and prefer him NOT being on Arrow at all. But I think they are going to use him as a stepping stone per say. By that I mean he's there to show Oliver that he can indeed have a life outside of just being the Arrow. That he can be the Arrow and yet still have a life as Oliver too. I don't think he'll really be a love interest obstacle per say but he may still evoke a little jealousy in Oliver. By that I mean that there will be no love triangle but Ray's flirting with Felicity will not go unnoticed by Oliver and therefore set him off just a bit. However I truly believe that Olicity will be in a good place this season. Yes the date doesn't go well but I really don't see Oliver pushing Felicity away. Anyway as I said at the beginning I really don't care about Ray/the Atom and hope he's not in too many episodes because I have a feeling a little of him will go along way and I don't want him to take over the show. It's already bad enough he's taken over QC.
ReplyDeleteI doubt he just a love inreeest/triangle. He alsoa businessman and scientist so i sure he could have in some way.
ReplyDeleteHe's in 16 episodes.
ReplyDeleteHopefully he's only in about 1-5 minutes of each of those episodes otherwise I might throw something at my TV. Sorry but I don't want the show to become all about him.
ReplyDeleteLOL you haven't even seen him yet. I don't get hating characters before the season even starts. But I guess since he apparently messes with Olicity it would be an automatic thing anyway.
ReplyDeleteI'm just traumatized by what they did to Vertigo, who I liked on Young Justice. The guy could have had science based sonic device like Sara did, he could have been from that made up country, but they completely ruined his character and that's not even talking about the awful portrayal.
ReplyDeleteSo if they're gonna use a character, use them, don't take their name and twist them into a completely different character to fit the show. It's one of the reasons I'm looking forward to The Flash- characters can be themselves, powers and all and they're not ruined in order to fit the show.
So they should have said no to Atom and used someone else, no point in having a Justice League member if he can't be a superhero.
Does anyone else think that they'll eventually spin Ray Palmer off to Flash? Wasn't the Atom Firestorms mentor? All of this hype is reminiscent of Barry Allen last year, except they already had the spin-off planned. Just like Barry, they keep saying how great Ray is, he's a male Felicity with money, he's got great chemistry with Felicity, etc... I'm thinking if the Flash does well, and I think it will, that Ray will move to that show, and by Flash season 2 they'll try to do a spin-off for Atom & Firestorm. Brandon Routh can carry a show, and Robbie was the lead on TP. So it makes sense that he wouldn't have 'powers' on Arrow. Plus, I personally have no issue with powers, but this is Oliver's show, they can't keep him human and have a regular player with powers... it'll just make Oliver look obsolete.
ReplyDeleteYeah but they do it all the time, and yeah they could easily make new Vertigo like 52 Vertigo with the device but they won't.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a problem with them making changes to a character as long as it works in the show. Obviously what works is different for everyone.
This show hasn't stuck close to comics with their heroes or villians. Shadow is nothing like the comics, neither is Oliver or Slade (sadly they FUBAR'd that one).
I've never been one to scream it has to be just like the comics because let's face it there's a lot ythst just doesn't translate
Shado is a huge change, but I'm glad she's not a rapist villain. I think I'm ok with change as long as it works, mostly as long as the spirit of the character remains (not in Shados's case, obviously, but in all the other ones). I think it also depends on if the actor/new character wins me over, what they do with him/her and how attached I was to the original character. I think with the new Titans show being developed for TNT I'll be extremely critical of any changes to Nightwing, because Dick Grayson is my favorite comic book character.
ReplyDeleteI don't think things have to be EXACTLY like the comics, because it's a different medium, but if you take a character and twist them so much their only resemblance to the original is the name, what's the point in using them? Use someone else or make up a character.
these guys have got to realize that thy're creating a comic book world, they're having people putting on masks and saving the city with bows and arrows, it's not exactly grounded on reality so they gotta get off their high horse and introduce powers once and for all
ReplyDeleteThat's not even way I'm dreading him. It's more to do with the EPs shoving the chemistry between BR and EBR in our (or my) face with every interview they give that has me dreading him. Plus I watched Chuck and if this character is anything like that one then it's even more reason to dared his introduction. Don't get me wrong, I loved BR as Clark/Superman in Superman Returns. I just don't like him coming in and disrupting a already great show, takes too long to get everything sorted out. But I well try and keep an open mind (tell after the season premier at lest).
ReplyDeleteIt's all that hype that makes me leery of this character. If they want to give him his own show, great, the faster the better. I'm just really worried that it's going to be the Ray Palmer show this season and that is something I don't want. As you say this is Oliver's show not his.
ReplyDeleteI really think it's way too early to be passing judgment on the introduction of Ray Palmer and how much of his Atom persona will be or won't be incorporated into Arrow. After two strong seasons, the show-runners have earned some latitude to build their narrative as they see fit. And, given how quickly they like to advance that narrative, it's certain that Ray Palmer's direction will become evident earlier than later.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping they're just coming in before Ray Palmer gets his powers. Keep in mind that Flash is in the same universe so powers from freak scientific based phenomenon is in the realm of possibility. Considering that Ray Palmer (IIRC) also received his powers via a scientific "accident" it is conceivable that they could be down the road for the character. At least I hope so.
ReplyDeleteWe already say the "canary cry" for BC. That stupid round box thing Sara used when she first came on to the scene. (sorry. It did NOT work for me at all)
ReplyDeleteHow can a guest character take over the show, even if they are there for the whole season, they are just there for a while to tell a story and then will be gone. But then again you are the same group of people who were complaining about Sara taking over the show because she appeared in 5 consecutive episodes. Ironically the complains started about the same time after she hooked up with Oliver. We have Felicity in pretty much every episode, many scenes even if she isnt doing anything useful, but hey noone complains. Seriously some of you people want an Olicity/Felicity show, the show can't even be allowed to showcase another character for a while or get new characters to enrich the show.
ReplyDeleteYou think.
ReplyDeleteYeah there is at least that, he should be fine even if he doesn't become Atom on the show.
