Agents of SHIELD - Robert Downey. Jr. open to appearing

7 Oct 2014

Avengers star and generally awesome person Robert Downey, Jr. participated in a reddit AMA Tuesday afternoon to promote his new film The Judge with Robert Duvall.

But the biggest news to come out of the question and answer session is that Downey, who has played popular Marvel character Tony Stark since the first Iron Man film in 2008, said he would be willing to guest-star on the Marvel TV series, ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

When asked by another reddit user if there was any chance he'd drop by this season, Downey said, "Nothing is impossible. But there might be a fair amount of red tape involved in something like that." He continued, "I love Clark Gregg, and am pleased the show is doing so well."

  1. Yes, somebody make this happen! I just need the Avengers/SHIELD/GoTG groups to hang out and have fun.

And LOL, Chloe's reaction is my own.

  2. This could actually save AoS ratings

  3. I'll love if Robert Downey, Jr. participates from Agents Of Shield.

  4. it would be so awesome if he guest starred

  5. I can't even tell you how much I would love that! NO WORDS!

  6. The same way Liam Neeson was open to play Ra's Al Guhl on Arrow

    Willing: yes
    affordable? let`s hope so guys

I was always hoping for big time actors that star on franchises with television spin-offs to be signed on for episodes as part of the promotional campaigs (every actor does a promo tour, they could make a stop at the AoS set). If Disney managed to build in an obligatory TV appearance/cameo in every contract...that'd be awesome

  7. Well, that would certainly be the only episode I'd watch this season.

  8. What?! Is Fury can pop up twice Tony can pop in. MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

    ReplyDelete
  9. If Disney can't make this happen, no one can. C'mon Disney! Lets do this!!!

  10. Well Arrow is a different story isn't it? Marvel's movies have a huge following i can see it happening even if it is a 10 seconds scene although RDJ is probably the least possible guy to get to AOS. But i think it's not at all impossible.

    ReplyDelete
  11. not entirely different, Arrow could have needed the same kind of casting dedication.

The only REAL difference I see there is the budget availability. How much are you willing to pay an actor for appearing? Even if he wants to he has to be paid

  12. I will be so damn ecstatic if this actually happens! :D

  13. OMG I squealed when I saw this! Marvel HQ get on this and make this happen!!!! This would be out of this world if it happened.

  14. I thought he didn't hear the question? I was sure that the reporter said to him would you willing to reappear as Ra's and he said yes then posed the Arrow question in a quiet voice or something and Nesson didn't hear.
I may be very wrong but that's what I thought I read about that whole deal.

  15. If Robert Downey Jr. this happens will be in a possible season 3, because I think the Avengers will learn about Coulson after they destroy Ultron.

Right, I never liked more than reading her tweet. So cute!

  17. Coulson needs to come back to movies bc if by the end of this season he rebuilds S.H.I.E.L.D he's gonna need to come forward and despite Joss Whedon claiming Coulson won't appear in Age of Ultron. I believe it's a misdirect for us fans and wouldn't be surprised when in the final moments of the movie one of the avengers would ask nick fury who is the new director and bam! Coulson steps out!.

Once the team learns of this then Season 3 of RDJ appearing would make sense.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Exactly, I say this after they destroy Ultron a.k.a "in Avengers 3", so I agree with all you said.

    ReplyDelete
  19. If they weren't gonna bring him back why make him the director in the first place lol

    ReplyDelete
  20. Now you make a real good point hahahaha

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yup. I wonder if anyone else started piecing together the puzzle lol. If they didnt want him back they would of clearly made May the director lol

    ReplyDelete
  22. If someone discover will be Black Widow or Hawkeye maybe. I agree after all Coulson always will be a great character for MCU.

    ReplyDelete
  23. How would they discover it lol

    ReplyDelete
  24. While it's far from likely that he'll appear on the show, this actually has a couple of significant differences from the Arrow situation, like the fact that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is part of the same story universe as the movies that Robert Downey Jr. has starred in, and that they've already had Samuel L. Jackson appear on the show twice.

  25. Add "generally awesome person" to RDJ's list of characteristics, please. Alongside genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist.
    Please and thank you.

  26. No offense but I hate comments like this. It's no different from Liam Neeson's "Oh yeah, I would totally play Ra's al Ghul on Arrow." Yeah, it's great to sound all cool and like you don't mind doing smaller TV projects when it's all talking in theory. There's no need to add an "As long as they pay me (insert the budget for the entire season)" disclaimer.

If I actually see RDJ in an episode, *

  28. You are missing out, then. Last nights episode was the first one ever I gave an outstanding without even thinking about it. AoS has really picked up pace, and if they keep it up...well, then I would put it over Arrow and Flash. But time will tell.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Natasha discover a lot of things in Cap 2, so for her would be easy, now for Bart I think would be more complicate, but super spies always get of they want.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Sorry, but I don't think I'm missing out. When they can give the season-long baddie such a horrible and campy death as they did with Garrett, they obviously have no idea what they're even doing, or Whedon lost his touch when it has come to TV.

Besides, I've said this from the beginning, with Phil Coulson back and alive, it ruins the integrity of The Avengers even becoming a team only for Disney to have something on TV to rival DC's Arrow.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Whedon is barely involved in the show, and Garrett's death was very popular with the audience.
    Well, your loss.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Whedon is an executive producer of the series. That's not being "barely" involved in the show, and if Garrett's death was popular among the audience, I hate to know what the audience demographic is.

Not my loss, but thanks for caring I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Last time I checked he had co-written and directed exactly one episode, and that was the pilot. The guy is way too busy with the next Avenger movie to be overly involved with the show.
I would guess a demographic who was happy to be spared another "the hero were too incompetent to double check their enemy was death" episode, which is way too popular with Comic book shows. It was also a very nice call back to The Avengers...in case you didn't notice, the line Coulson uttered after firing the weapon was exactly the same he used when he was fighting Loki.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Once again, he's an EXECUTIVE PRODUCER. Just writing one episode, the pilot, doesn't mean he doesn't have some say in the series, and I would hope, coming from the guy who brought in some great big bads on Buffy and Angel, that he'd give some insight on how to make Garrett actually awesome instead of being taken down by Deathlok, put on some armor and get killed after giving a maniacal laugh. It was terrible and a complete joke. Makes Aldrich Killian's death look serious.

Also, yes, I got Coulson's last line…which again adds to my other point that Coulson being alive once more ruins the integrity of The Avengers becoming a team.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Which makes me wonder why you even watched it if you are bothered by the very premise.
Honestly, even before I knew about AoS is was sure that Coulson was still alive. I think even if they ever kill of a sympathetic character for real in the MCU, I will expect him to pop up again. That he actually DID die and was rescued by questionable means was quite a surprise for me.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Why wonder? I never watched the entire series. I saw the pilot. I struck around during the 'Winter Soldier' arc with Hydra taking over, only to realize it didn't add much to the films because AoS never adds anything to it, and I saw the season finale, having been told what happened previously with Garrett turning out to be the big bad, then being granted some kind of serum, the same kind S.H.I.E.L.D. gave Coulson and only hung my head in shame with the outcome of Garrett. I never liked the idea that Coulson was brought back to life, but that doesn't exclude me from at least checking out the first season here and there to see if there was any potential, which I found out there wasn't any.

But, Coulson didn't actually DIE….if he's brought back to life, that doesn't mean he really DIED. Stane DIED. Vanko(both of 'em) DIED. Laufey DIED. I can go on and one. Coulson should have DIED and never returned as it would only mean more to The Avengers forming. But, in my mind, the series doesn't exist and Coulson's death was powerful enough as it is for The Avengers to unite and avenge Coulson's death.

If people want to watch it, fine, but to me, it's a terrible series.

    ReplyDelete
  37. No offense, but if you just jumped into the show like this, knowing fully well that Garrett was the one behind the scenes, you were missing out. It's like watching Psycho nowadays, it just doesn't have the same impact if you know exactly what will happen. And a lot of what happened, especially with Ward and Fitz, was kind of a shock, because nobody did see that coming.
Coulson was, in every sense and purpose, dead. And not just for five minutes, but for weeks. Not even Nick Fury knew if the procedure would work, and nobody knows what it actually did to Coulson, long term. So during the time the Avengers united and avenged him, he was death, and I don't think that those feelings which were leading the Avengers (minus the Hulk, who didn't even know Couson or that he died during the fight) were less powerful either way.

    ReplyDelete
  38. HELL YES! BRING ON RDJ I WILL BE WATCHING HE BE AWESOME AND MAKE THE SHOW EVEN BETTER!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Missing out with seeing how bad an awful Garrett's death was? Nah, lol…if Garrett's death was actually something memorable, then I'd actually feel sorry for myself, but a very poor execution doesn't make me feel bad for not knowing what has ever happened throughout the first season when it comes to the Clairvoyant. So, there is no offense taken, lol.

We obviously have different opinions when it comes to DEATH in that whole Marvel universe. Coulson wasn't dead. He returned and that undermined The Avengers forming because they were AVENGING a friend's death, someone that, through Phase 1, got to have these special moments from Tony Stark, Thor and Steve Rodgers. Now he just shows up on the show, totally ruining what really made it something very smart for The Avengers to get together, more than just "hey, we need to stop these aliens now".

    ReplyDelete
  40. I guess technically, if Coulson got rid of Levels it won't matter who finds out he's alive. That being said, I want Loki.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yeah, well, I originally assumed you were one of the "I was excited about it, gave it a try and then gave up on it early on" watchers. In this case the information that it only gets better and better might be helpful. I certainly won't try to coerce you into watching something you couldn't get behind from the get go. That rarely works.
Agents of Shield made big leaps since the mediocre beginning. I can honestly say that I am currently looking more forward to a new episode of it than to a new episode of Arrow, something which I wouldn't have expected only one year ago, when I was all over Arrow.
Though I am currently mostly looking forward to Agent Carter. Can't wait for that pilot.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Nah….I wasn't ever REALLY truly excited about AoS. Agent Carter, on the other hand, is. I love the idea of seeing the beginnings of S.H.I.E.L.D. since the ending of it should've happened in The Winter Soldier, and well, I've said it multiple times of how I feel about a series with Agent Coulson. To be honest, starting with Agent Carter and going into Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage….Marvel has peaked my interest on their television projects for sure.
