SYFY’S NEW ZOMBIE SERIES Z NATION BITES OFF 1.6 MILLION VIEWERS DURING SEPTEMBER 12 PREMIERE

#1 IN TIME PERIOD AMONG TOTAL VIEWERS AND ADULTS 25-54

SYFY’S HIGHEST RATED ACQUIRED SCRIPTED SERIES DEBUT SINCE DR. WHO IN 2006

MOST SOCIAL ACQUISITION EVER

NEW YORK – September 15, 2014 – Syfy’s new zombie series Z Nation bit 1.6 million total viewers during its Friday, September 12 premiere at 10PM (ET/PT), becoming the channel’s highest rated acquired scripted series premiere since Dr. Who in 2006.

The dynamic action-drama from The Asylum (producers of the Sharknado franchise) also chomped on 695K Adults 18-49 and 853K Adults 25-54.

Z Nation was #1 in the 10PM time period among total viewers, Adults 25-54, Men 25-54, Women 25-54 as well as #2 among Adults 18-49.

In the past week, more L+SD total viewers fell victim to Z Nation than the most recent telecasts of The Leftovers on HBO, Teen Wolf on MTV and Doctor Who on BBCA.

Z Nation was also Syfy’s most social acquired scripted series premiere ever across all social metrics (tweets, unique authors, and tweets per unique). For the night, Z Nation ranked as the #4 entertainment program in tweets in both broadcast and cable.

In Z Nation, three years have passed since the zombie virus has gutted the country, and a team of everyday heroes must transport the only known survivor of the plague from New York to California, where the last functioning viral lab waits for his blood. Although the antibodies he carries are the world’s last, best hope for a vaccine, he hides a dark secret that threatens them all. With humankind’s survival at stake, the ragtag band embarks on a journey of survival across three thousand miles of rusted-out post-apocalyptic America. Z Nation stars Harold Perrineau (Oz, Lost) Tom Everett Scott (Southland, Beauty and the Beast), DJ Qualls (Supernatural), Michael Welch (Twilight trilogy), Kellita Smith (The Bernie Mac Show) Anastasia Baranova (The Darkness II) as Addy, Russell Hodgkinson (Big Fish) as Doc and Keith Allan (Rise of the Zombies) as Murphy.

Karl Schaefer (Eerie Indiana, Eureka, The Dead Zone) serves as executive producer and showrunner. Acclaimed action director John Hyams (Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning) directed the pilot. The series is produced by The Asylum and sold internationally by Dynamic Television.

  1. It's a action focused zombie show, unlike TWD wich is stretching itself into the drama category this more of a straight forward zombie/action hybrid.

Fun to watch and certainly good to pass the time while TWD is on hiatus. It would be incredibly dumb to have both compete against each other

  2. I'd rather watch the worst tv soap opera than this sh*t...cheap special effects, bad acting...actually calling that bad acting is too nice. Not having the walking dead on air right now doesn't mean that I'll watch any other zombie show just for the sake of it. I want good quality tv with or withous zombies.

  3. I weep for humanity...

  4. Walking Dead? Quality TV? lol!

  5. "I want good quality tv with or withous zombies"

And if The walking dead isnt good quality tv then z nation is...what?
The Walking dead might have gotten worse when it comes to the story but at least there's good acting.

  6. I don't know why people have so many problems with that show. Last year 'everybody' was grinning during watching Under the dome and suddenly everyone is pointing bad taste to others. Yes, Z nation has it's faults, but at least it isn't pretending that's it's made for anything other than entertainment.

  7. I gave it a try,will not watch again.

    ReplyDelete
  8. What if it's renewed for season 2 would you watch then lol

    ReplyDelete
  9. If i don't intent on watching it now why would i watch season 2

    ReplyDelete
  10. It was pretty bad and ridiculous at times, as I told you I thought it could be. But in a really funny way. I hope they keep going on the comical side (even if it's unintentionally, something that still I'm not totally sure)

  11. Usually ppl who give up on a show decides to watch after hearing it first season success lol

    ReplyDelete
  12. exactly, it was a fun ride. Short and dumb. Just how I like my crappy B-movies :D

    ReplyDelete
  13. now let's get one thing straight: Z-Nation is NOT a show that takes itself serious. It's made by a studio that produces intentionally bad movies like Sharknado. It comes down to liking it or not.

That said: Walking Dead is an okay show that takes itself for more than it is, it`s a melancholic soapfest. If TWD has turned into anything it is a soap.

I enjoy both but really hate the classic TWD fans on their high horse damning everything that is not similar to TWD

    ReplyDelete
  14. especially while Under The Dome pretends to be serious television

    ReplyDelete
  15. for a low budget syfy original that is indeed a good premiere.

Remember: a big budgeted show like Dominion got itself similar ratings

    ReplyDelete
  16. I understand that, it's appealing to a rather specific breed of viewer. Those that...love stupid B-movies. It's not serious television and doesen't pretend to be

    It's like Sharknado ^^

  17. Now let me get one thing straight: Im not a classic TWD fan on my high horse, Its not even on my top 3 favourite show, Im only talking about it because it is the obvious show to compare it to (yes, I like it and I watch it, but I've skipped some episodes or have used my time to watch something else instead of TWD).
Second let's try not to mix the fact that a show doesn't take itself serious with things like bad acting. (For example on Haven sometimes they joke about how silly are the things that are going on but doesnt mean they lower the quality of their performances)
There are shows and there have been shows that havent taken themselves seriously and that didn't automatically mean a bad cast with bad acting skills.
Also another thing, someone said on another post I think, "oh but it is entertaining" but that doesn't make it any good, There was people who said Jersey shore was entertaining but was it good tv? That's what Im not liking about all the z nation posts entertaining tv and good tv are not the same to me. It may even sound confusing.

    ReplyDelete
  18. It doesen't sound cofusing at all, it's not good television. It's good entertainment.

It doesen't have any high quality to brag with, it doesen't need any. It's campy, crappy fun.

As for the acting...believe me if you had seen other movies this studio produced, they were notorious to cast hookers, strippers and failed actors when they began producing. What we have here is a serious upgrade

    ReplyDelete
  19. Not me. I'm not bandwagon material. I'm pretty good at guessing which shows I'll like and I watch it as soon as I can. Usually I watch the Pilot and either continue watching or never go back. I rarely ever dislike a Pilot I watch because I'm getting good at judging trailers.

Once in a while I'll miss a show I'd like and have to catch up later, but it's usually because I know I'll like it and I'm ignoring the show, trying not to watch because I have too many shows already. I usually fail at this.

(I have zero interest in Z Nation).

    ReplyDelete
  20. I don't know why they make it seem like it's a 1.0 and 3 million ratings. 0.5 rating and 1.60 mill is average for Syfy, and that was for the Pilot.

All shows tend to drop in ratings after premieres (people are just checking out the show), so the next few weeks will tell more about the promise or lack of for the show.

    ReplyDelete
  21. the impression u have now on z nation was it the same on Helix? lol

    ReplyDelete
  22. It's that bad? My interest has gone from 0 to −50. :P

    ReplyDelete
  23. I don't watch Helix. Not really a type of show that holds my interests. Animals, spies, supernatural creatures, superheroes, and sometimes space - that's what interests me most, though I do have a few procedural shows (and one medical that doesn't count much cause it has ghosts on it lol - I watch for the ghosts).

    ReplyDelete
  24. lol, it isn't that bad for a production of this range though. Certainly interesting from a production point of view ^^

    ReplyDelete
  25. saving hope isnt it lol

well Helix gotten really better and now season 2 looks more intense :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Syfy channel has been very selective for me. I've never had more than 2 shows on it at once. I only have one right now, and possibly one in the fall. (Though it's my most watched non-network channel for scripted dramas).

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yep Saving Hope, which I haven't seen past Season 2 episode 7 because I don't live in Canada and refuse to watch it on anything illegal. I watched the first 7 episodes on Season 2 on youtube.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Well videobull.com or primewire.ag isn't illegal lol

    ReplyDelete
  29. True. But for viewers, the cost behind productions don't matter. I wish everything

    ReplyDelete
  30. True, remember Dominion? A fairly good show with brilliant VFX, having worked with visual effects myself for a while now I can tell you that producing something like this ain't cheap. I'm sure that IF Dominion got cancelled (wich is a pretty good guess given that there were no news thrown our way since the season finale) it'll be less about the 0.5 average and more about the giant a** budget this show may have had behind itself.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hell, I watch Dominion. I know it would take a miracle for renewal, like Almost Human, Awake, etc. but nothing can be done.

BTW I wonder if that means Defiance is too? Neither has had news. Not that I watch Defiance.

Syfy doesn't realize it's a 0.5 rating channel now no matter what. Most people I know think Syfy is a cheeseball channel after Sharknado, etc. They don't bother with the channel's shows.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I get a ton of pop-ups though. That's another issue.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh Canada. Might have to get an aunt to buy it. They shop in Canada sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  34. the comical scene in s2 was when they crossed the other side by using the door . and the spinning wheel thingy .

    ReplyDelete
  35. if it becomes more of a hit and gets renewed then critics will go bezerk. lol.
guess bad publicity is also some kinda publicity i guess.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Depends, if it's easy VFX like car movements, explosions (wich are often done through stock footage) or bloodsplats it's easy.
But if you're going for hyper realistic wings like dominion did or huge flying shots....then the whole thing is a lot more expensive by default.

Not sure, I've been meaning to watch Defiance for a while now but I never got around to. I suppose syfy is doing a coin toss between both shows now :/

The problem is that syfy gave up too many chances, syfy original movies (like Sharknado) have always been filler material for open timeslots. These are unique pieces of media that attract a sizable audience.

But the problem is that outside of Haven syfy really has no franchise going for it.

I've been hoping for them doing another Stargate spin-off or with the current reboot a Star Trek series but I'm afraid both franchises are now out of reach for them -,-

I'm still 100% convinced that buying the rights to Buffy from Joss Whedon to produce a spin-off featuring Buffy original characters could save any network if done right.

    ReplyDelete
  37. well it's amazon, they ship to the US as well

    ReplyDelete
  38. Season 2 is a wreck. I watch it out of being curious about who's behind the Dome. But I'm 3 episodes behind now and not sure if I'm going to bother to go back to it, even if I like Barbie and a couple other characters.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Is there any extra costs or anything?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Coin toss...I want tails.

Of course it would be my luck if it's the one time it lands on heads.

    ReplyDelete
  41. certainly but I doubt that'll be too dramatic, the show will be rerun on ION though. So I`m sure it'll make it here on DVD as well

    ReplyDelete
  42. ION I'll have to put add the show to my TV guide watchlist.

    ReplyDelete
  43. use chrome and download adblock plus works like a charm :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'll tune in for a few more episodes, just for the sake of the genre, but I was not impressed with the pilot. Something about it seems off. The acting wasn't very good, nor was the dialogue. And there was hardly any action worth watching.

The Walking Dead is a better show, despite being heavily flawed itself and quickly going going down the shitter with each new season. But at least it's able to blend good action and drama with, most of the time, believable and likable characters that have compelling depth. We got all of that in just the pilot alone. But not with Z Nation. Z Nation is more in line with a bad, low budget zombie flicks you find in bargain bins for $2 .

Z Nation need to improve if I'm going to continue to watch. Considering I enjoy The Walking Dead, I'm really not asking for much. Surely the writing will improve? I feel like I could do better than what was delivered, perhaps I should try if this is the sort of thing getting picked up right now.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Sorry, but this is a lame excuse that I'm tired of seeing. Whenever something does poorly, people always go on the defense saying "It's supposed to be silly/cheesy/quirky/bad. It's not meant to be taken serious. "It's like people are unwilling to accept that something they like might genuinely be of poor quality.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Under The Dome was alright at first. But it got worse with each new episode. I'm surprised I've made it most of season 2. I didn't even pay attention half of last episode. This is the final season for me. I can't continue to strain to watch it any longer.
