Witches of East End - Poe Way Out - Review

Sep 30, 2014

This week's Witches of East End found Joanna leading Wendy and Freya on a journey back in time that also led Freya down memory lane in some unexpected ways.  Elsewhere, Ingrid showed her true feelings about her grandfather while Dash's dalliance with Raven continued and Killian took a bold and irreversible step to reunite with Freya.

I absolutely loved the story of Joanna going back in time to retrieve a magical box as she'd known for many years she would one day do, without knowing why or when.  Time travel twists such as that are always delightful, and the scene of the two Joannas interacting was perfectly haunting and accepting in its execution.  Ingrid's plotline with the king was also terrific, and she probably had plenty of us going, thinking she really was going to take his side, given her track record and Joanna's quip that Ingrid had always had a connection with her grandfather.  However, as Ingrid later revealed to Dash, her true intention is to string her grandfather along, letting him trust her and believe her to be loyal, so she can find out his wicked plan and thwart it.  Excellent!  I did think it was too suspicious that Ingrid would be so unconcerned about her grandfather's highjacking of Tommy's body.  Also, Ingrid's reunion with Dash was nice, and it was cool to see them working together again.  It reminded me of how promising "Dashing" was earlier in the season, before Dash started to slide too far downhill morally for them to feasibly work.
Killian's story was also quite compelling, as he let Eva's lookalike relative and her friend create a potion that would guarantee he could be with Freya in the next lifetime, uncrossing their cursed stars.  However, it also meant that Killian had to die in this life once he drank the potion, which unfortunately, he did near the end of the hour, right when Dash was trying to call and alert him that Freya was still alive!  Ahhh, so frustrating.  And when Ingrid was claiming that she and Dash had bigger problems than telling Killian about Freya still being among the living, I wanted to shout at her, "no, that's not true!"  Killian's desperation to be with his soulmate was obviously a major threat to his survival.  Now Frillian are in a Romeo and Juliet scenario where a misunderstanding has led to Killian's demise just as Freya has arisen from seeming-death.  This probably intentional homage reconfirms just how deeply doomed the Freya/Killian romance seems to be, despite their most devoted efforts to thwart that doom.  And it's certainly one of the most fiercely poignant and suspenseful aspects to the show.

Although Raven is investigating the murders in town, she hasn't overtly stated that she has reason to suspect Dash's hand in the two he pulled off (I'm not counting his patient whose life he traded for that of a child, since I'm assuming that's undetectable), although it does seem a bit coincidental that she chose Dash's medical expertise to consult and then snooped around his house after another roll in the hay.  Is Raven merely sexually smitten and eager to spend more time with Dash, or has she started to catch on to his criminal ways?  Or could it be both?  Time will tell.
As for the flashback tale of past Freya falling in love with past Killian, who turned out to be Edgar Allan Poe, that part was a bit of a mixed bag.  I know there's no reason why the characters who live multiple lifetimes could not have been famous historical people, but for some reason this reveal seemed rather cheesy to me.  The best part of this aspect of the episode was Wendy pulling Joanna out of an opium-induced stupor to figure out a solution once Freya had (rather foolishly - past Freya and Ingrid often seem so incredibly naive compared to their present incarnations) summoned an evil spirit and become murderously possessed.  Seeing Wendy and Joanna join forces to solve this problem, although they were forced, heartbreakingly, to kill Freya in the process, was fascinating and exciting, especially when it culminated in future Joanna's appearance.

Now that almost all of the other Beauchamps are prepared to face off with the king and a returned-to-duty Tarkoff, (Freddie needs to stop vacillating and just join the right side of the fight completely) the stakes are set high for the two hour season finale.  With all of the tricky witchery, time travel, deception, manipulation, and romantic possibilities whipped up into a frenzy at this point, I can't wait to see how it all plays out and what crazy cliffhanger may await us at the end of the finale.

What did you think of this episode?  Share your thoughts in the comments!  And don't forget to catch the two hour season finale next Sunday on Lifetime at 9/8c!

  1. Great review. I definitely think there's more to Raven than meets the eye. I do like her though, she's very promiscuous. I don't think she's going to last though, Dash will probably kill her. I hope he doesn't but I can see it happen.

Loved the time travel too and the scene with both Joannas. It was very well done and I enjoyed the backstory to Freya being involved with Edgar Allan Poe, which is sooo cool as I was studying his short stories in college last year, such as the Black Cat. Now I'm going to think it actually was a nod to Aunt Wendy though I know it's not true haha. Looking forward to 2 episodes next week. You'll have quite a chore next week to cover both episodes Virginia :P

  2. Thanks! I agree with your suspicions about Raven and what Dash's intentions towards her may soon be. It would be pretty cool if Raven turned out to be a witch or just a plain old badass and defeated Dash if he does attack her. Yeah, next week's review is going to have a lot of material to cover...I bet the finale is going to be awesome, so it should be easy to talk about, I hope! :)

  5. I loved the Edgar Allen Poe twist with Killian & Freya's past life. Since I've been deprived of seeing them together in present day for most of the season I've enjoyed seeing the lives we've been told about even though they've ended in tragedy. It really shows how much the two characters love each other and belong together. Plus Daniel has been killing it with his performance. The look on his face as he saw Freya on the table and held her when she was dead crushed me! Seeing him trying to deal with her death has just been heartbreaking. I wanted to slap Ingrid upside the head for telling Dash they had bigger problems than Killian learning that Freya was alive! That was just cruel!!! I wonder how she would feel if she knew how Dash responded to her death! He hopped in the sack with the first girl that came along the same night it happened!!! Yeah he really cares about Ingrid!! From next weeks photos it looks like Ingrid gets there in time to save the day with Killian. Fingers crossed!

Killian and Dash are both from Asgard too. Did I miss the king telling Ingrid that? Are the brothers under the same curse as the Beauchamps? Killian is responsible for Frederick betraying the family? I wonder if they will explain any of this in the finale? I want to know what happened between Killian and Freya in Asgard that sent them on this path of tragedy. He and Frederick were apparently enemies. This show better get renewed!! They have too many things that are going to be left unanswered and it looks like we will be left with a big cliffhanger!!!

  6. Severely disappointed with the creative downturn the show has taken in the past two episodes. I wondered how the writers could possibly outdo themselves after "Smells Like King Spirit" but it seems my pessimism was warranted. I felt like I was watching a really badly written episode of
Poltergeist: The Legacy and kept thinking if any of the producers of
Penny Dreadful happened to catch this installment by accident, they
    would be rolling with laughter.

Time travel is a nice sci-fi trope when utilized properly, but this whole story of Ambrose Bancroft and Killian as Poe was so random and poorly executed.

I've heard of "keeping it in the family," but prostitution as family business? What kind of mother encourages her two daughters to follow suit? They made a clear point of establishing that
Freya was not merely a bar wench but an "entertainer" as well. Gross.

Daniel Di Tomasso was the only one who even attempted an old timey American accent. Isn't that something they would go over at the table read? The amalgam of accents make no sense
considering their common origin in Asgard and the fact that they continued to live with one another.

Also, why is Dash sleeping in the attic when he has an entire mansion to inhabit? His bedroom set does not even remotely resemble his sleeping quarters from season one.

  7. I think the Beauchamps knew that Dash and Killian's were from Asgard, perhaps I'm assuming that Joanna and Wendy must have told the girls that, or Freddie since he knew Killian then, but I don't remember if there was a scene telling Freya and Ingrid this. I'm curious about the reasons for Freddie's hatred of Killian from back in the day as well. I agree on wanting answers to the many mysteries of the show! :)

  8. I did indeed find the Poe element to be a bit much; Freya's possession was a little better pulled off. The anachronisms were aplenty, especially with past Wendy's dialogue. The prostitution aspect was a little weird, I agree, especially since hey could have just run a bar and inn and done their fortune telling on the side. As for Dash, I wonder if he doesn't feel comfortable sleeping in June house proper for some reason, after all the problems with his family. Hmm, interesting.

  9. I was right on point with Ingrid last week. I feel so smart hehehe but yeah. I find it kinda creepy though that she kept wearing that white burial dress for nearly an entire day overnight.

  10. Good call, and haha, I agree about the dress. Ingrid needs to work on time management. She had time to change and time to tell Killian that Freya is still alive!
