Although I'm a Olicity shipper, I am really excited about Roy and his new position as a sidekick and how this may change how he and Oliver interact. And of course, I want to know more about Oliver's past.
ALL :) Most looking forward on the list is Oliver past and son and Thea journey. I can see all the other storylines surrounding as well. I want to see Malcolm gets his ass kicked! and want Thea back to nice Thea and with Roy. I can predict Felicity and Oliver will go separate ways, Felix will be with Barry and Oliver may win Laurel over. You know I am ok whatever they do, I just hope it will end or continue nicely. Laurel and Quentin storylines will be a extra blast, especially after Arrow secret let out and I hope Quentin will find out soon... of course Sara will come back!, want to see more of the family bonding!. I think Diggle will always be part of the Arrow team, he may not be a full-time father. He can live a double life but we need Diggle. Like I passionately said I will look forward to all storylines :)

Thea and Sara coming back. Quentin I mostly just want to be around. Felicity and Roy depends on how they handle it. Not excited about Laurel or anything baby-related.
Also looking forward to Sara coming back, learning about Digg's brother and why HIVE wanted him dead, and finding out more about Felicity. I hope Olicity and Laurel's arc are well done, but I'm skeptical given the show's track record. Roy's storyline could go either way. I dread Oliver's kid being brought into the mix as well as what Diggle having a baby on his hands could mean for the show.
The storylines I am most excited to see are Oliver and Felicity's past. Oliver's flashbacks in Hong Kong is going to be great and I have been wanting to see flashbacks of Felicity since the show started. Honorable mentions go to Thea's new journey, Sara coming back, and seeing Roy as Oliver's sidekick.
How about the story line the show is supposed to be about, Oliver as the Arrow? That seems to have gotten lost in all the rest of this relationship stuff.

Not at all. Almost all of these USD polls for Arrow are loaded to the brim with bias and agenda which is why I rarely bother with them. This was an exception.
This is a USD poll. Ofcourse it will be biased according to the person submitted. Its their right to do so. If the options you want is not there, poll on the other option and give your comments.

It's always hilarious and partially hypocritical to read people tell one that they should let others have their opinion as well and in the same sentence degrade their conversation partners opinion as well.

All the options given above and the villains will comprise the journey of Oliver as Arrow. That is the whole point of this show. Or are you saying the options like Thea's journey, Oliver's past, and every other character's journey and god forbid his romantic relationships *gasp* won't affect Oliver's journey as Arrow.
I do thing that Theas new love interest will be more than that though, he may very well be a villain in disguise using Thea (I'm being hopefull though)

the flashback storyline will be dealt with by season 5, if Arrow goes beyond that Connor will be like 13 (if the story evenbends it they could turn him 17).
LOST did flashforwards once, I could see Arrow do that with Connor
Ikr!? This is an action drama series. Romance has its place but id prefer to hear more about the character journeys. Seems the bulk of sneek peak posts have been on relationships. Hope its all balanced well.
Bringing bias about story lines is absolutely fine. Post as much as you want about your dislike about Olicity and Felicity. Its your right. I brought my bias against Laurel here too. But insulting unnecessarily when not even one poster here insulted a Laurel fan or an actress is just juvenile and petty as the horrible shippers you are so against.
This poll had reference to EVERY one of the regular characters and Sara in the show. The person who submitted the poll did not include villains in general and recurring characters like Ray Palmer and Wild Cat. How is that biased. When you talk about Thea's journey it includes Malcolm, when you talk about Felicity it includes Ray Palmer, when you talk about Laurel Lance that includes wild cat, Oliver's past and Sara will include LoA and Ra's Al Ghul.

both of us know what was ment there, the storyline, the villains, the action. Not the drama and googly eyes.
I ask you to remember what this show was about when it began: about a guy hunting villains with bow and arrow. THIS is what I want back. I don't want a promo to indicate that this will all be Olicity time. Sure some Oliver/Felicity scenes ARE cute (I don't deny the chemistry) but HELL IS WANT THE ACTION and villains to be a focus.
All these polls and spoilers are making us non-shippers think is that this show has actually turned into a shipper heaven.
Think of it from a shippes perspective:
- Felicity is left out of a promo completely - no romantic interaction whatsoever is shown or mentioned
how do you think would they react? Desperate to see that their favourite aspect from the show seems to have been scrapped.
My fear might be unreasonable (I don't know) but these polls, these spoilers are seriously turning me against the show
The Arrow writers are woeful at writing romance (IMO). There are many relationships and potential relationships on the show and I don't care a single bit for them (okay, maybe Diggle and Lyla but that's it).
Part of it is genuine (the fear from too much romance) but we all know you can't prove your point better than luring the shippers out of their cage. It's hilarious to see some reactions.
Huh, a flashforward could be interesting. But I think the EP's/Writers would avoid it so as not to set the the future "in stone". Television writers do so love to keep their options open/sit on fences.
But seeing Stephen Amell in the classic Goatee/Van Dyke would be awesome.

All my trolling aside, I love the show but hate how shippers have taken over the fandom and romance has become a driving factor in the marketing. Seeing some shippers act superior to other fans and accusing them of quite some weird acts is both hillarious...and sad
if it was their official last season that would be a great way to end things though.
Knowing theCWs habbit of wrapping shows up (Nikita, BatB and HoD) I could see a final season of Arrow in the future that could pull something like that
recently binged season 1 again, it's amazing to see how TWD has changed over the seasons, as much as I disliked season 3 I have to say it's a well moving show (could possibly need some more fast paced sequences though)

They could prefer one story line over other just like you prefer Malcolm and Ra's Al Ghul over Oliver's past since you put that on number 4. That is your bias. I am a non-shipper, as most anyone here knows. I don't belittle, insult or "rage" against all things Olicity or any other fandom's favorite ships. I state my opinion (that fan service and ships ruin certain shows, while taking focus away from the main story) and move on. Valid, constructive criticism is not argumentative, hypocritical and insulting at the same time. You say you have the right to your opinion while bashing others for sharing or believing in theirs. I do not ship couples, I roll my eyes a lot at some, I get frustrated with my shows and stories but I understand why those who ship, do. I don't agree with most but I understand.
The funny thing mac is the people who have replied to your post are not shippers. Its just people who like good discussions about the show. Shippers are not reacting my friend.

I don't know if you're a shipper or are just riding high that your favourite character gets so much love from the fandom through that ship while you least favourite (Laurel) is getting bashed multiple times? RIGHT?!
Its not the fans fault that Laurel is the most boring character on the show, I didn't like her from the start, episode 1 2 and 3 witch did not have any Felicity or Olicity.
And what is wrong with a beautiful love story WE can have it All.
As much as I love Oliver/Felicity, I really want them to take their time even if I have to wait for the final episode of the show. I just want them to be endgame so right now I'm more excited about "sarah coming back" (and Nyssa pleeeeease) and "thea'new journey" (I so want her to become dark and be in a sort of evil team with her father. It would be twisted and wrong but so amazing).
Of course you are. But on every Arrow post at this point all you do is kinda just make fun of some people's opinions, and make paranoid or even negative comments about season 3. It sort of makes it really hard to even discuss Arrow with you.

A voters attention span usually makes it down to the middle of a poll. the rest is either ignored or half heartedly crossed
There have been enough scandals in europe and the US about certain parties actually buying their ways to the first mention on a poll.
Thing is...we all knew how this would end, I do find it pathetic having to put a ship first and the MAIN CHARACTERS journey third (or fourth, I really have no intention to look back up)
When this show started that is season 1 a major story line was Oliver pining for Laurel and Laurel juggling Oliver and Tommy. Romance was always a big focal point of this show. I agree season 3 promotion was Olicity heavy. Never disagreed to that. I also agree if not treated correctly and done sparingly it could ruin the show.
But take a look at the comments down here mac and honestly tell me how many people here in the comments section has said their first preference is Olicity? Even the hardcore shippers here have opted for other things as their first preference. Poll results are different. People who come as guests can also vote there. Both of you guys act like no other option was given on this poll other than Oliver and Felicity....
it's not hard, just don't ride a high horse. Thing is that a lot of people just loooooooooove to degrade opinions they don't agree with.
I tend to do the same but try to control myself. I might be paranoid about the shows direction but no one is giving me a reason not to be (minus you but you`re a whole other story)
I agreed on your first paragraph, disliked her in her first episodes and most of season 1 as she was pretty flat. She grew in season 2 as her character gained depth through her issues
the second part I simply have to disagree on, this show is NOT a romantic show like you seem to suggest.
My take on romance in non-romantic fiction:
it is needed, it serves as motivation for the main character but should never take a bigger part than any other plot element.
You don't promote the Resident Evil flicks as the romantic journey of Carlos and Alice, you don't promote The Dark Knight as the love story between Bruce and Rachel and you shouldn't promote Arrow as the love story between Oliver and Felicity (they did though).
Nah.. Seriously I don't care about Olicity. They can fridge it after episode 1. I don't mind Olicity if it is in the background. I disliked several of their scenes last season. I like the idea of Oliver not bed hopping one season and sticking to one love interest. Also its better they are going the Olicity way this season than keep on teasing fans for years like they did last season. If this crash and burns this time we all can move on. I am super excited for Thea and Felicity's back story. I would be pissed if Ray is only there to facilitate Olicity. I hate triangles. Felicity can be a nun as long as she gets good storylines. I don't even actually talk about Olicity much.
Now regarding Laurel I have no love lost for her. I dislike the character and the actress's portrayal of the same. I hope it changes this season but don't see it happening. Unless people insult the actress (not acting) in person I don't see any harm in saying they dislike the character or her actions.
I would like Laurel fans to write more about what they like in the character than unnecessarily talking about shippers (unless provoked like Olicity greater than Laurel or something like that). It only increases Olicity chatter you know.

This won't be Olicity all the time. He's up against merlyn, Cupid, Komodo, and Ra's Al Ghul to say the least. And again in the first episode there is literally an massive action scene in the first few minutes. Plus there's also going to be Sara stuff, Malcolm and Thea and Ted Grant training and helping Laurel to become Black Canary: not to mention a Flash Arrow crossover in episode 8 (that's bound to have to tons of action in it). Even then have you need seen the comic con promos or high speed chase, they showcase tons of action. I get it Mac you hate the idea of Arrow becoming a shipping show in every way (as do I), but you can't keep taking the marketing as representative of the show since it has nothing to do with it. Not to mention season 1 had the incredibly obnoxious storyline of a triangle between Oliver, Laurel and Tommy and was still great. At this point you're just being really paranoid and fearful and it's unfounded. But really if the spoilers and polls bother you then just stop paying attention to them, it's just simple.
See I really hope that Olicity crashes and burns as well.
And just to clarify: I'm not a Laurel fan. I appreciate the way they wrote her in season 2 (wich I considered HBO worthy writing) but she is by far not my favourite.
I do like Felicity more (not Olicity...HUGE DIFFERENCE) but it IS weird to see people being interested in her backstory that could very well turn out to be 'worse' than Laurels arc in s2 was

Why are we back on this? MAC. COME ON. You saw the episode description for the 2nd episode, you KNOW it's not going to be all romance all the time.
-Oliver and Felicity won't engage in anything romantic after the first episode, I thought all the spoilers made that clear. So in a sense, it will be like season 1 (something you didn't have a problem with)
-Oliver/Felicity's story is different than Laurel/Oliver's story so you can't just say how the fans will react to their romance. Considering more people love Oliver/Felicity WAY more than Laurel/Oliver, it's safe to say that you can't compare the two.
-Promotion for the other characters sucked, I agree. But then again, you're acting as though everything we see in the promos is exactly what will happen on the show. You're wrong. Promos are generally misleading, promos are done by the people who AREN'T in charge of the show and its content. So I don't get your point.
-So in the promos where there was a maximum of 10-15 seconds of romance out of 3 minutes, you would think it was a romantic drama? Mac, we all know you're exaggerating here.

"Fiction mirrors our deepest desires and tells us of our real hopes and wishes". The same way I consider abusive fictional ships to be disturbing in the real world I do consider option placing in polls about fictional characters as disturbing. Not as disturbing as supporting a fictional abusive relationship (what usually leads psychiatrists to at least note a mention of possible abuse acceptance in the past of a persons life) but certainly as mildly disturbing
I'm perfectly aware that whoever put this poll together did not have the intention to seem biased, it may have even been written with a completely positive outlook on the character of Laurel but the point is that our subconcious desire to see OUR opinion as the highes ranking of them all must not be achieved through any manipulative actions. it isn't a moralic choice.

You're literally said they don't have the attention span to view the entire pol that's insulting them. Second you're complaining about a poll have an Olicity option, which would be valid except for all the non-shipper options. So it's not a shipper poll. It's a Arrow poll.
Sadly this is the case, Oliver/Felicity would probably win anyway as the interested voters actually came!
The poll wouldn't have a completely different outcome but various points would be different. GOP has done that for a while now and despite election comissions there are still new election manipulations coming up as well.

It's more that you lump everyone together in their views, generalize the fandom, say they're biased incredibly (which can be true at times, but isn't really earned as while some people here are definite shippers they're generally very polite about their opinions ) or (my case) basically say they have the maturity of a toddler.
No, I'm not interested in being put in that 'special' group where everything negative you have to say doesn't apply to me. If you're going to talk about how shippers are ruining the show, you're talking about me as well because I support their relationship and it's one of the things that keeps me coming back. I do agree there is a lot of Laurel hate due to Olicity love out there. But going with lot of discussions about Laurel here I think lot of Laurel hate will change once she start getting shit done. things like her winning a trial, be less self righteous, actually saving some people and treating her family fairly (which they started by the end of season 2). Then the battle will be between Laurel fans, reformed Laurel fans and people with unnecessary hate.
From what I've seen a lot of the Laurel hate has to do with Laurel being Laurel and nothing to do with Olicity. Even on tumblr from what I've seen, Laurel not being liked has nothing to do with people liking Olicity. You go to the Arrow tags and you see people who just start watching the show and they say "Laurel is annoying me" or whatever, it has nothing to do with how they feel about the [main couple of the show] (heh, pls, let me have this).
People have issues with Laurel by how she's been written and how inconsistent she is. Hell, even the casual viewers I know don't like her because she's so wishy washy, weak, and just comes off the wrong way.
I like the chemistry between Oliver and Felicity and would actually like it if they became romantically involved, but what I'm really curious of is if Slade will be back and where that storyline would be headed to (I really liked the two of them working together btw).
Laurel becoming BC and Thea becoming a badass, hopefully ending up as Oliver's sidekick and not being bad. That and Ra's, but them going for an Aussie has dampened my excitement, so I hope he's amazing in the role.
Unless it's Cheshire, I couldn't care less about Roy's new love interest (or Thea's, she definitely doesn't need one, she has plenty to keep her busy this season).
I agree with you about Laurel dislike. What I am talking about was rabid Laurel hate a small but vocal portion of the shipping fandom has who freak out when one photo is posted of SA and KC. First sentence was about that and rest for Arrow fans who dislike Laurel. The second portion might sway their opinion about Laurel if writing improves and Laurel becomes enjoyable while the first will never change the attitude.
I'm very excited for Oliver and Felicity's storyline. I don't know why everyone is worrying that they'll take over the show based on a couple of promos. They go on one date and it ends badly. Calm down.
I voted for Thea as my second choice because I'm excited about her storyline with Malcolm but I'm pretty much excited for everything. Even Laurel. Well, maybe not excited but I'm interested to see if they can save her character from seeming like surplus to requirements.
I have no interest in Oliver's kid or Diggle as a father though. I really don't want kids on Arrow. Everything else looks great.
God, I was so pissed at the casting, you have no idea. Give me an Arab or at least an Israeli! I can't believe they cast an Aussie for an Arab and an Arab for an Aussie (Captain Boomerang) but I feel like they'll completely change Boomerang's backstory and he won't be an Aussie this time around. God, every time I think of Ra's casting I get even more upset, because they cast a WoC as Nyssa and Manu as Slade, as well as canon minorities like Shado, Katana, Amanda, to name a few, so they're not incapable of casting minorities. So why fail on this iconic character, when they can finally do him justice? They could have cast Abu Nazir from Homeland as Ra's instead of wasting him in one episode last season as a henchman. Or is it that it's ok to whitewash Arab characters, because it's easier to get away with?
Diggle/Lyla (and back in S1 Tommy/Laurel) is the only relationship on the show I like, everything else I don't care about. I'd rather focus on character development and cohesive story telling, which sucked in S2.
I voted for Felicty's past, because the girl is almost an enigma, and Thea's journey, mostly because it involves Merlyn. I'm also really looking forward to Laurel's BC storyline, but I didn't vote for it because I dread it in equal measure.
IDK about you, but Laurel for me is going to be a hard sell. I just don't trust the EPs when they say that we're going to be 'excited' about Laurel's journey because they say it all the time and Laurel always remains to be my least favorite part of Arrow. I know I shouldn't be, but I'll probably be more critical of her actions in season 3. And I honestly hope they find a good use for Laurel and not make others look incompetent so Laurel can 'fit in' with team arrow. Sorry, but that's not how they're going to win people over in regards to Laurel.
I am so looking forward to anything to do with Felicity because she is my most favorite character. After that, I am interesting in Thea and her journey and her relationship with men in her life namely, her bio dad, her brother and her boy friend (former).
Thea's new journey is my most anticipated storyline for the upcoming season. I always found the writing and storyline for Thea for the past two seasons to be the worst and really adds into the "The CW" type of angst, but this idea of Malcolm training Thea to presumably become a villain is something I am definitely eager to see. While her nickname is Speedy, I could see Thea becoming an evil version of Artemis.
Roy being as the sidekick and possibly going solo this season is also something that interests me, as Roy's journey in Young Justice was also one of my favorite arcs on that show. Another one I'd probably add is Laurel training to become Black Canary, but I don't see her actually becoming BC until the fourth season.
Felicity's back story ! I Love that character...And as of now we know practically nothing about her, so it'll be good... Also Oliver and felicity but that's more because as I said I love felicity, so anything related to her, I'm excited for !
The name Ra's Al Ghul itself makes one anticipate an Arab person.Its not like Sin which can be a name for any ethnicity. I would have even settled for a black actor as there are black Arab speaking people. I can just from memory list atleast 5 good Arab actors. Its not like there is a shortage of them. I still don't understand this casting choice.
I get it. My knee jerk reaction when ever I get a Laurel news is completely negative. But I have changed opinions about characters before. None with this passionate reaction as Laurel but still. If Arrow writers are able to make me love Laurel I will give it to them. It's an uphill task. Let's see what happens.
I agree with you on anything but the Laurel and Connor Hawke. While I don't like her, I'm interested in seeing how her training with Ted Grant and becoming Black Canary goes, especially if it makes her more likeable and stronger as a person (and if it goes like the comics makes her better in hand to hand than even Oliver). Regarding Connor Hawke, well he's Connor Hawke so I can't hate that.
Hey about Connor I only dislike it for this season as Connor is just 7. I want the show to tackle it in season 6 or 7 after a time jump. Then a 16 or 17 year old Connor can be introduced who can train with Oliver. As far as I have read Connor is a great character.
Laurel is a wait and see thing for me. I have become excited and then let down by this character repeatedly for 2 years. Now I will believe it when I see it.
LOL, yeah, you think the name (as well as an Arab henchman) would be a dead give away. I would have settled for a blond haired, blue eyed Lebanese, he doesn't have to look like a typical stereotype and yeah, Black Arab would have been fine, though might have been interesting to know the genetic lottery that produced Nyssa. I'm sure I can list some actors as well and I'm sure they'd jump at the chance to play an iconic, Arab villain, rather than just play terrorists, like Hollywood normally does. I just can't with this casting. But I should have known when the casting said 'any ethnicity, as long as they can do an accent' that what they really meant was 'white who can look decent tanned and can do some vague Eastern sounding accent'.
My hope for series finale is Oliver dying and Connor picking up the hood persona in respect to his father. That will be an epic end. I always thought heroes like Batman and Green Arrow will always die in action. I can't see them retiring and living a long life.
Did you watch season 1? It had tons of relationship. Renders your point mute. That and the Ra's al Ghul stuff, Cupid, Komodo, Roy stuff. Really most things.

I guess that's the problem. You have to TRY SO HARD to understand Laurel and get where she's coming at. It's just so taxing when television is supposed to be a more relaxing experience. I don't want to come home from work on a Wednesday in order to work some more at understanding one of the most worst written characters on the show.
I think I've been good at withholding judgment from what we've seen with Laurel about the new season (which really the most minimal amount of spoilers I've seen for a 'lead' character). Then again, I'm nervous because anything I HAVE seen about Laurel just rubs me the wrong way (AKA, Laurel maybe overstepping her boundaries in episode 2, Laurel beating up a guy in a hospital (lord please let it be because lives are at stake and not because Laurel is pissed and impatient)).
well that actually means you dont have your own opinion about the show or the characters and you spend more time dealing with the fans rather that dealing with the characters. THe show's new season havent even started yet for Christ's sake! DEAL WITH THE SHOW!
First its a CW show, the first season was full of romantic stuff and yet managed to deal with Oliver being vigilande. Second season had less romance than previous season and it also manage to deal with vigilande becoming Arrow. So i dont see how third season cant have romance and also deal with Arrows true identity which is being the green Arrow! (well just have to wait and see)
Probably because I don't think you'll find a lot of people complaining about Diggle's position on the poster on this site (there were a few, but it wasn't an overwhelming amount). Also, I think most people don't want to see Diggle solely a father (as the poll suggests), they want to see him out on the field.
I was one of the people who didn't like Diggle was put in the back, but I didn't vote for him on this poll because we're only allowed two votes and I was more excited about Thea and Felicity's past, not Diggle taking on fatherhood. But that's just me.

They are making the show sound like the Felicity show, with Oliver being her love interest. I can predict Felicity and Oliver will go separate ways, Felix will be with Barry and Oliver may win Laurel over. You know I am ok whatever they do, I just hope it will end or continue nicely.
Laurel and Quentin storylines will be a extra blast, especially after Arrow secret let out and I hope Quentin will find out soon... of course Sara will come back!, want to see more of the family bonding!. I think Diggle will always be part of the Arrow team, he may not be a full-time father. He can live a double life but we need Diggle.

I hope Olicity and Laurel's arc are well done, but I'm skeptical given the show's track record. Roy's storyline could go either way. I dread Oliver's kid being brought into the mix as well as what Diggle having a baby on his hands could mean for the show.
The storylines I am most excited to see are Oliver and Felicity's past. Oliver's flashbacks in Hong Kong is going to be great and I have been wanting to see flashbacks of Felicity since the show started. The person who submitted the poll did not include villains in general and recurring characters like Ray Palmer and Wild Cat. How is that biased. When you talk about Thea's journey it includes Malcolm, when you talk about Felicity it includes Ray Palmer, when you talk about Laurel Lance that includes wild cat, Oliver's past and Sara will include LoA and Ra's Al Ghul.
IMO this poll actually is for everyone.

THIS is what I want back. I don't want a promo to indicate that this will all be Olicity time. Sure some Oliver/Felicity scenes ARE cute (I don't deny the chemistry) but HELL IS WANT THE ACTION and villains to be a focus.
All these polls and spoilers are making us non-shippers think is that this show has actually turned into a shipper heaven.
Think of it from a shippes perspective:
- Felicity is left out of a promo completely
- no romantic interaction whatsoever is shown or mentioned
how do you think would they react? Desperate to see that their favourite aspect from the show seems to have been scrapped.

They are allowed to have likes and dislikes too you know. They could prefer one story line over other just like you prefer Malcolm and Ra's Al Ghul over Oliver's past since you put that on number 4. That is your bias. Does that mean Merlyn and new count Vertigo is more important to this show than Oliver's past?

If this poll had no Laurel Lance option and everything else I would have understood this kind of reaction. This I don't. Do what you want.. There is no point to this conversation.
I am a non-shipper, as most anyone here knows. I don't belittle, insult or "rage" against all things Olicity or any other fandom's favorite ships. I state my opinion (that fan service and ships ruin certain shows, while taking focus away from the main story) and move on. Valid, constructive criticism is not argumentative, hypocritical and insulting at the same time. You say you have the right to your opinion while bashing others for sharing or believing in theirs. I do not ship couples, I roll my eyes a lot at some, I get frustrated with my shows and stories but I understand why those who ship, do. I don't agree with most but I understand.

Action + Villains + Heroes & Love
As much as I love Oliver/Felicity, I really want them to take their time even if I have to wait for the final episode of the show. I just want them to be endgame so right now I'm more excited about "sarah coming back" (and Nyssa pleeeeease) and "thea'new journey" (I so want her to become dark and be in a sort of evil team with her father. It would be twisted and wrong but so amazing).

Why do you think that is? Well lemme tell ya (you didn't ask but I'll tell you anyway): it's called influencing outcomes.
A voters attention span usually makes it down to the middle of a poll. the rest is either ignored or half heartedly crossed
There have been enough scandals in europe and the US about certain parties actually buying their ways to the first mention on a poll.
Thing is...we all knew how this would end, I do find it pathetic having to put a ship first and the MAIN CHARACTERS journey third (or fourth, I really have no intention to look back up)
When this show started that is season 1 a major story line was Oliver pining for Laurel and Laurel juggling Oliver and Tommy. Romance was always a big focal point of this show. I agree season 3 promotion was Olicity heavy. Never disagreed to that. I also agree if not treated correctly and done sparingly it could ruin the show.

ReplyDeletethe second part I simply have to disagree on, this show is NOT a romantic show like you seem to suggest.
My take on romance in non-romantic fiction:
it is needed, it serves as motivation for the main character but should never take a bigger part than any other plot element.
You don't promote the Resident Evil flicks as the romantic journey of Carlos and Alice, you don't promote The Dark Knight as the love story between Bruce and Rachel and you shouldn't promote Arrow as the love story between Oliver and Felicity (they did though).
Romance is a backdrop, not a giant arc

If I hadn't started Arrow with it's pilot I would be under the assumption that this is ACTUALLY a romantic drama.
As for the comments, I do read that people opted a lot for "everything but Laurel" and didn't mention the rest

ReplyDeleteNah.. Seriously I don't care about Olicity. They can fridge it after episode 1. I don't mind Olicity if it is in the background. I disliked several of their scenes last season. I like the idea of Oliver not bed hopping one season and sticking to one love interest. Also its better they are going the Olicity way this season than keep on teasing fans for years like they did last season. If this crash and burns this time we all can move on. I am super excited for Thea and Felicity's back story. I would be pissed if Ray is only there to facilitate Olicity. I hate triangles. Felicity can be a nun as long as she gets good storylines. I don't even actually talk about Olicity much.
ReplyDeleteNow regarding Laurel I have no love lost for her. I dislike the character and the actress's portrayal of the same. I hope it changes this season but don't see it happening. Unless people insult the actress (not acting) in person I don't see any harm in saying they dislike the character or her actions.
I would like Laurel fans to write more about what they like in the character than unnecessarily talking about shippers (unless provoked like Olicity greater than Laurel or something like that). It only increases Olicity chatter you know.

This won't be Olicity all the time. He's up against merlyn, Cupid, Komodo, and Ra's Al Ghul to say the least. And again in the first episode there is literally an massive action scene in the first few minutes. Plus there's also going to be Sara stuff, Malcolm and Thea and Ted Grant training and helping Laurel to become Black Canary: not to mention a Flash Arrow crossover in episode 8 (that's bound to have to tons of action in it). Even then have you need seen the comic con promos or high speed chase, they showcase tons of action. I get it Mac you hate the idea of Arrow becoming a shipping show in every way (as do I), but you can't keep taking the marketing as representative of the show since it has nothing to do with it. Not to mention season 1 had the incredibly obnoxious storyline of a triangle between Oliver, Laurel and Tommy and was still great. At this point you're just being really paranoid and fearful and it's unfounded. But really if the spoilers and polls bother you then just stop paying attention to them, it's just simple.

ReplyDelete-Oliver and Felicity won't engage in anything romantic after the first episode, I thought all the spoilers made that clear. So in a sense, it will be like season 1 (something you didn't have a problem with)
-Oliver/Felicity's story is different than Laurel/Oliver's story so you can't just say how the fans will react to their romance. Considering more people love Oliver/Felicity WAY more than Laurel/Oliver, it's safe to say that you can't compare the two.
-Promotion for the other characters sucked, I agree. But then again, you're acting as though everything we see in the promos is exactly what will happen on the show. You're wrong. Promos are generally misleading, promos are done by the people who AREN'T in charge of the show and its content. So I don't get your point.
-So in the promos where there was a maximum of 10-15 seconds of romance out of 3 minutes, you would think it was a romantic drama? Mac, we all know you're exaggerating here.

The same way I consider abusive fictional ships to be disturbing in the real world I do consider option placing in polls about fictional characters as disturbing.
Not as disturbing as supporting a fictional abusive relationship (what usually leads psychiatrists to at least note a mention of possible abuse acceptance in the past of a persons life) but certainly as mildly disturbing
I'm perfectly aware that whoever put this poll together did not have the intention to seem biased, it may have even been written with a completely positive outlook on the character of Laurel but the point is that our subconcious desire to see OUR opinion as the highes ranking of them all must not be achieved through any manipulative actions. it isn't a moralic choice.

But going with lot of discussions about Laurel here I think lot of Laurel hate will change once she start getting shit done. things like her winning a trial, be less self righteous, actually saving some people and treating her family fairly (which they started by the end of season 2). Then the battle will be between Laurel fans, reformed Laurel fans and people with unnecessary hate.

ReplyDeleteFrom what I've seen a lot of the Laurel hate has to do with Laurel being Laurel and nothing to do with Olicity. Even on tumblr from what I've seen, Laurel not being liked has nothing to do with people liking Olicity. You go to the Arrow tags and you see people who just start watching the show and they say "Laurel is annoying me" or whatever, it has nothing to do with how they feel about the [main couple of the show] (heh, pls, let me have this).

Again, I'm just going by my experience.
I like the chemistry between Oliver and Felicity and would actually like it if they became romantically involved, but what I'm really curious of is if Slade will be back and where that storyline would be headed to (I really liked the two of them working together btw).

What I am talking about was rabid Laurel hate a small but vocal portion of the shipping fandom has who freak out when one photo is posted of SA and KC. First sentence was about that and rest for Arrow fans who dislike Laurel. The second portion might sway their opinion about Laurel if writing improves and Laurel becomes enjoyable while the first will never change the attitude.

ReplyDeleteI voted for Thea as my second choice because I'm excited about her storyline with Malcolm but I'm pretty much excited for everything. Even Laurel. Well, maybe not excited but I'm interested to see if they can save her character from seeming like surplus to requirements.
I have no interest in Oliver's kid or Diggle as a father though. I really don't want kids on Arrow. Everything else looks great.
I agree Matt Nable better kill the role of Ra's Al Ghul. They had so many poc great actors to choose from for such an iconic character.
ReplyDeleteGod, I was so pissed at the casting, you have no idea. Give me an Arab or at least an Israeli! I can't believe they cast an Aussie for an Arab and an Arab for an Aussie (Captain Boomerang) but I feel like they'll completely change Boomerang's backstory and he won't be an Aussie this time around. God, every time I think of Ra's casting I get even more upset, because they cast a WoC as Nyssa and Manu as Slade, as well as canon minorities like Shado, Katana, Amanda, to name a few, so they're not incapable of casting minorities. So why fail on this iconic character, when they can finally do him justice? They could have cast Abu Nazir from Homeland as Ra's instead of wasting him in one episode last season as a henchman. Or is it that it's ok to whitewash Arab characters, because it's easier to get away with?

Diggle/Lyla (and back in S1 Tommy/Laurel) is the only relationship on the show I like, everything else I don't care about. I'd rather focus on character development and cohesive story telling, which sucked in S2.

I just don't trust the EPs when they say that we're going to be 'excited' about Laurel's journey because they say it all the time and Laurel always remains to be my least favorite part of Arrow. I know I shouldn't be, but I'll probably be more critical of her actions in season 3. And I honestly hope they find a good use for Laurel and not make others look incompetent so Laurel can 'fit in' with team arrow. Sorry, but that's not how they're going to win people over in regards to Laurel.

ReplyDeleteThea's new journey is my most anticipated storyline for the upcoming season. I always found the writing and storyline for Thea for the past two seasons to be the worst and really adds into the "The CW" type of angst, but this idea of Malcolm training Thea to presumably become a villain is something I am definitely eager to see. While her nickname is Speedy, I could see Thea becoming an evil version of Artemis.

I would have even settled for a black actor as there are black Arab speaking people. I can just from memory list atleast 5 good Arab actors. Its not like there is a shortage of them. I still don't understand this casting choice.
ReplyDeleteI get it. My knee jerk reaction when ever I get a Laurel news is completely negative. But I have changed opinions about characters before. None with this passionate reaction as Laurel but still. If Arrow writers are able to make me love Laurel I will give it to them. It's an uphill task. Let's see what happens.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on anything but the Laurel and Connor Hawke. While I don't like her, I'm interested in seeing how her training with Ted Grant and becoming Black Canary goes, especially if it makes her more likeable and stronger as a person (and if it goes like the comics makes her better in hand to hand than even Oliver). Regarding Connor Hawke, well he's Connor Hawke so I can't hate that.

ReplyDeleteHey about Connor I only dislike it for this season as Connor is just 7. I want the show to tackle it in season 6 or 7 after a time jump. Then a 16 or 17 year old Connor can be introduced who can train with Oliver. As far as I have read Connor is a great character.
ReplyDeleteLaurel is a wait and see thing for me. I have become excited and then let down by this character repeatedly for 2 years. Now I will believe it when I see it.
LOL, yeah, you think the name (as well as an Arab henchman) would be a dead give away. I would have settled for a blond haired, blue eyed Lebanese, he doesn't have to look like a typical stereotype and yeah, Black Arab would have been fine, though might have been interesting to know the genetic lottery that produced Nyssa. I'm sure I can list some actors as well and I'm sure they'd jump at the chance to play an iconic, Arab villain, rather than just play terrorists, like Hollywood normally does. I just can't with this casting. But I should have known when the casting said 'any ethnicity, as long as they can do an accent' that what they really meant was 'white who can look decent tanned and can do some vague Eastern sounding accent'.
ReplyDeleteMy hope for series finale is Oliver dying and Connor picking up the hood persona in respect to his father. That will be an epic end. I always thought heroes like Batman and Green Arrow will always die in action. I can't see them retiring and living a long life.

ReplyDeleteI guess that's the problem. You have to TRY SO HARD to understand Laurel and get where she's coming at. It's just so taxing when television is supposed to be a more relaxing experience. I don't want to come home from work on a Wednesday in order to work some more at understanding one of the most worst written characters on the show.
ReplyDeleteI think I've been good at withholding judgment from what we've seen with Laurel about the new season (which really the most minimal amount of spoilers I've seen for a 'lead' character). Then again, I'm nervous because anything I HAVE seen about Laurel just rubs me the wrong way (AKA, Laurel maybe overstepping her boundaries in episode 2, Laurel beating up a guy in a hospital (lord please let it be because lives are at stake and not because Laurel is pissed and impatient)).
well that actually means you dont have your own opinion about the show or the characters and you spend more time dealing with the fans rather that dealing with the characters. THe show's new season havent even started yet for Christ's sake! DEAL WITH THE SHOW!
ReplyDeleteFirst its a CW show, the first season was full of romantic stuff and yet managed to deal with Oliver being vigilande. Second season had less romance than previous season and it also manage to deal with vigilande becoming Arrow. So i dont see how third season cant have romance and also deal with Arrows true identity which is being the green Arrow! (well just have to wait and see)

ReplyDeleteProbably because I don't think you'll find a lot of people complaining about Diggle's position on the poster on this site (there were a few, but it wasn't an overwhelming amount). Also, I think most people don't want to see Diggle solely a father (as the poll suggests), they want to see him out on the field.
ReplyDeleteI was one of the people who didn't like Diggle was put in the back, but I didn't vote for him on this poll because we're only allowed two votes and I was more excited about Thea and Felicity's past, not Diggle taking on fatherhood. But that's just me.

I doubt the Olicity fans would be so chill and relaxed, they would be war all over social media and message boards. Nah, its because you know they will be Olicity scenes sprinkled all over each episode for the rest of the season for you to enjoy, the so called "slow burn". Oliver and Felicity are pretty much in every scene together, its not like there is much difference on whether they are dating or not lol.

Its not unusual for ship fans who are being pandered to and who have their ship taking over the show, to NOT see that this is happening and ruining the show. I honestly do not care about the antics and behaviour Olicity get up to on the internet, so dont think Im hating on you guys, its the writers/network's fault that they have allowed to be influenced by you and are ruining the show.
Now, on the topic off this poll, I would have loved to see Roy becoming Arsenal. But you know what I cant even allow myself to be excited about that either. Knowing this show they will be little of his own story and he will just become another Olicity cheerleader.
Felicity's Past, Roy as Oliver's sidekick, Oliver's son, Oliver and Felicity and Sara coming back are the things that interest me the most.

Screw it, season 1 disproves that romance will never take over the show, along with the Arsenal stuff, Thea and Meryn stuff, Komodo, Ra's al Ghul, Hong Kong and Waller stuff, etc. This isn't TVD.

What is it to you, if we are being paranoid as you say then leave us with our opinions and interpretations. Unless you know we are telling the truth, seems like its scares Olicity fans somehow. Are you afraid you wont get what you want if more people complain and see the truth for what it really is or that your ship (and you) will be largely accountable for the downfall of this series. Yeah, no one ever want to be accountable when that happens.

You want to know why I don't leave you to your opinions, because I don't like a show I enjoy being compared to the mess of TVD, you have absolutely no proof or evidence, but you continue to proclaim that Olicity is the downfall of the series! Ooh scary. Well except for the fact that we know that the majority of the season will have nothing to do with them as a couple. Yes because I'm in denial. Wow I mean wow. Screw it have fun with paranoia and scare tactics. I'll be enjoying an action filled season 3 with Ra's al Ghul, Malcolm training Thea, Cupid, Komodo, Hong Kong flashbacks and Arsenal. Have fun fearing the "death" of Arrow.

ReplyDeleteAnd I have my opinion about the character, but the writers (along with the fans) are really annoying me. They are making the show sound like the Felicity show, with Oliver being her love interest. I know that it won't actually be like that, but since I'm not watching the show right now and all I hear is Felicity, I'm getting seriously annoyed. I'm so ready for the show to air and for their date to go wrong so people will chill (after making a little drama, obviously).
OK, Im sorry for thinking you are an Olicity fan, if you are not. Yeah I do meet a couple of non Olicity fans online, with this mindset, so not surprised. I treat them just like I treat Olicity fans with this mindset. I disagree and I dont need your/their validation, of what I can clearly see as the truth.
ReplyDeleteOh I will have fun, I have a lot of new shows that I found and will be watching this fall, Arrow is barely a bleep on my radar these days. I know where its going and have prepared myself for better things. Enjoy the show while it last and while its still watchable.
What happens with Oliver and Felicity is my number one, and their journey separately and together.
