Buffy, Sun and others: includes Christina Yang from Grey's Anatomy, Leslie Knope from Parcs and Rec, and Olivia Pope from Scandal.
ReplyDeleteBuffy, Xena, & Diana
ReplyDeleteDaenarys, Beckett and Sara Lance from the list.
ReplyDeleteOther: Cosima, Alison and Sarah from Orphan Black, Abbie Mills from Sleepy Hollow, Octavia and Clarke from The 100 and Claire from Outlander.
1..2..3... Watch Kate beckett win lol.
ReplyDeleteDaenerys and Emily Thorne.
ReplyDeleteDaenerys Targaryen from the list! Other: Sarah Walker, CHUCK
ReplyDeleteTERESA LISBON, THE MENTALIST
ReplyDeleteSpecial shout-out to the female characters who get labeled a "bitch" because she cries. Or gets angry. Or gets captured. Or hurt. Or has a different opinion. Or doesn't do what she's told. Or occasionally needs to be saved. Those who are constantly knocked down, but still don't let those experiences keep her down for long. The Andreas (The Walking Dead), the Laurel Lances, the Tara Thorntons, the Sookie Stackhouses, the Allison Argents, etc. Each and every single one of them deserve way more than they get/got. Their stories are the most common in real life, but they get appreciated the least. For some reason people forget how hard it can be to get back up and keep going.
ReplyDeleteJane Rizzoli from Rizzoli & Isles would be on this list had I made it!
ReplyDeleteNikita, Sara and Sun. Also other: Juliet Burke, Ziva David and Clarke Griffin.
ReplyDeleteSarah Walker from Chuck
ReplyDeleteI love Katherine from TVD, even though she was a bit** :P And also Buffy and Nikita.
ReplyDeleteis there a forum somewhere where castle fans posts links to every insignificant poll on the internet that mentions kate beckett so they can flood it with votes?! because it is getting seriously annoying, and it undermines the spirit of these polls. this is not some fandom war where your favourite character HAS to win, this is just a fun poll where people get to talk about what shows and characters they like. please let it be what it is.
ReplyDeleteDenarys, Buffy and Olivia from the list. Others: Christina Yang from GA, Olivia Pope from Scandal, Alicia Florrick from The Good Wife, Elizabeth Burke from The White Collar.
ReplyDeleteI like Kate, but she really isn't the most empowered female on this list.
ReplyDeleteScully is and Stella (The Fall, coincidence that they are played by the same actress) and maybe Brooke Davis was. And Xena and Gabrielle... there are empowered females, but Kate, Buffy and Veronica certainly aren't on the top of the list. Just my opinion.
Regina OUAT
ReplyDeleteWanted to pick quite a few. But the first three would be Buffy, Starbuck, and Olivia (Fringe)
ReplyDeleteAnnie Walker from Covert Affairs.
ReplyDeleteOn the list: Sara Lance, Sydney Bristow and Buffy.
ReplyDeleteOther:
Jessica: Suits
Audrey: Haven
Arya Stark: Game of Thrones
Alicia Florick, The Good Wife
Abbie: Sleepy Hollow
Watson: Elementary
Olivia Pope, Scandal
Trubel: Grimm
Felicity: Arrow
from list: Buffy, Veronica mars, michonne, daenerys, kate beckett, nikita, emily and katherine pierce
ReplyDeletenot from the list :allison argent - teen wolf, sarah walker - chuck and regina mills -ouat
Actually 'get the word out about a poll to motivate the fandom of a particular show or character' is kind of the ENTIRE point of these polls. That said, I feel the same way when Supernatural wins so much of everything, so I feel your pain.
ReplyDeleteAnd I voted for Veronica Mars, Daenerys, and Nikita. Would've gone for more but I ran out of options. ;)
(Also, that Walking Dead game ad that takes up the whole page and doesn't close until it feels like closing is seriously annoying)
Sarah Walker from Chuck
ReplyDeleteThis one is easy.............Olivia Benson - Law & Order: SVU. Liv has been kicking @$$ and taking names of "scumbags" for sixteen seasons and counting (347 total episodes within the L&O franchise)!
ReplyDelete4 SOME LAW AND MORE ORDER, I am Nobody!!!
Lots of good choices. Picked Nikita, Buffy and Sydney with honorable mentions for Veronica, Emily, Katherine Pierce and maybe Sara Lance. I do think Veronica is a more complex and richly drawn character than Sydney, but I was much more addicted to Alias than VM, so...
ReplyDeleteBrennan (bones) and Regina (ouat)
ReplyDeleteBuffy, Xena and Sidney.
ReplyDeleteI went with Olivia, Dana and Sun.
ReplyDeleteWow tough one!!There are so many many great characters in this list! I voted for Buffy Summers (my whole time favorite), Sydney Bristow and Katherine Pierce, the only petrova worth watching in the TVD verse!
ReplyDeleteVeronica's really great too and I wish I could have picked, Olivia, Dana Scully and Xena as well. As for the others I need to watch the other shows to have an opinion ;) !
Oh and I forgot Catherine de Medici in Reign ;)!
ReplyDeleteClarke Griffin!
ReplyDeleteBuffy, Beckett and Olivia.
ReplyDeleteXena Buffy Veronica Katherine Beckett others: Snow and Regina from OUAT Sarah Cosima Allison from Orphan Black Fiona from Shameless Claire from Outlander Eleanor and Max from Black Sails
ReplyDeletehmmm..Where's Hetty from NCIS Los Angeles? Now that is one strong, empowered female.
ReplyDeleteBuffy was the first strong female character I saw on TV so she's definitely at the top of my list. Then I picked Emily Thorne because she really surprised me, I didn't think I would root for her so much but with just a few episodes I was completely on board with her plan.
ReplyDeleteI voted for Veronica Mars for the same reason, it's always nice to see a female character who doesn't burst into tears every time something happens to her and whose plans don't fall apart all the time.
Cote de Palbio and Pauley Perrette
ReplyDeleteWOW! Well said! :)
ReplyDeleteCatherine Chandler .beauty and thé beast
ReplyDeleteOther: Allison Argent.
ReplyDeleteA shame she's not on that list, then again fandom and critics never did her justice so I'm not surprised. (Neither did the show, sadly.)
From the list: Dana Scully (always first for me ;)), Veronica Mars, Buffy, Olivia, Sydney...
ReplyDeleteOthers: Diana Rigg's Emma Peel from The Avengers and Diana Rigg's Lady Olenna Tyrell from GoT, Fiona from Burn Notice, Ziva from NCIS, Teresa Lisbon from The Mentalist, Kate from Perception...
Arya was my first thought when I saw the poll. Was a bit disappointed to see Daenerys instead.
ReplyDeleteBuffy, Sara Lance, and Sun Kwon.
ReplyDeleteBuffy, Sara Lance, and Sun Kwon. Were my votes. I'd say more, but I'm tired. Lol
ReplyDeleteNikki, Olivia, Daenerys <3 <3 <3
ReplyDeleteNikita. Absolutely no question about it (for me).
ReplyDeleteI haven't ever watched Castle and some of the other shows on the list, so I went with Buffy & Daenerys Targaryen.
ReplyDeleteBuffy, Emily Thorne and other: Teresa Lisbon (Mentalist)
ReplyDeleteThat was really hard but i went with Buffy, Sydney and Olivia.
ReplyDeleteInteresting topic you raise here! I recently described in one of my comments from one of my reviews what I considered a strong woman. Quoting myself, I said (read my original comment on http://www.spoilertv.com/2014/09/the-mysteries-of-laura-pilot-advance.html#comment-1569425371):
ReplyDelete"By strong I don't mean physical strength but more mentally strong. I
mean women that are independent and are not easily manipulated or put
off by others. Women that know what they want and are willing to stand
up for their goals and dreams. Women that know where their strengths
lay, but are also aware of their weaknesses. Crying and asking for help
are absolutely no signs of weakness but in my opinion a sign of their
courage to put themselves in a vulberable place. By the way, all of this
also counts for men equally."
This was just a brief description, but I think good examples of strong women are Olivia Benson from L&O: SVU, Ziva David from NCIS, Juliet Burke from Lost and Clarke Griffin from The 100 (now that I think about it, her mother Abby isn't a weak character either). On this poll, I voted for Sara (but now you made me realize that she isn't that strong after all), Nikita (although she does not always take responsibilities for her actions) and Sun (but I consider Juliet the strongest female on Lost).
Cristina Yang on Grey's Anatomy, Regina from OUaT, Skye, Simmons and May from the later episodes of Agents of Shield. Yes, I do love me some ABC ladies.
ReplyDeleteGOT, X-files and Carrie Mathison (Homeland)
ReplyDeleteElena from The Vampire Diaries ! Really ? There's no Elena here?
ReplyDeleteCote de Pablo ;)
ReplyDeletebut I totally agree! Ziva andy Abby are both great.
Do they have to be good girls? I would choose Nyssa al Ghul over Sara Lance. But from the list I choose past show characters like Buffy.
ReplyDeleteThea Queen!
ReplyDeleteMichonne, Beckett & Starbuck.
ReplyDeleteBo from Lost Girl
ReplyDeleteShowing some "Criminal Minds" love here with the mention of Emily Prentiss, JJ, and Penelope Garcia. Strong, smart, tough, yet vulnerable when need be. I also love that the women on this show support each other and don't devolve into the obnoxious catfight crap that so many women on other shows seem to fall into. Not to say they've never disagreed or gotten upset with each other, but they don't try and compete against each other for men or jobs or whatnot. There's a genuine friendship between them that's so refreshing to see on television.
ReplyDeleteSomeone else here mentioned Abbie from "Sleepy Hollow" and I'll add her to my list, too, along with Jenny. I'd gladly have those women on my side in a tough situation any day.
How about Gail Peck from Rookie Blue, Pam from True Blood and Regina Mills or Emma Swan from Once Upon a Time? As much as I like Daenarys (and I DID vote for her) I think Arya would've been a slightly better choice.
ReplyDeleteGood point, forgot about Alicia! Or Diane or Kalinda for that matter all would've made great choices
ReplyDeleteI think many of these women may be strong but they aren't necessarily empowered, and I completely agree with the person who said that Katherine is not empowered (Elena has issues, but she still would have been a better choice). I think empowerment is a state of mind that allows you to have a sense of independence and self-worth and also gives you control over your own destiny (which is why people often say that knowledge = power).
ReplyDeleteSomeone like Katherine in Vampire Diaries is the antithesis of empowerment. For starters, she relies almost entirely on her supernatural strength and the weakness of others to achieve everything she needs. Someone who consistently has to hurt, threaten, trick or compel others to achieve something is not empowered, because they don't possess the knowledge or interpersonal skills in order to succeed otherwise. Take away her powers and she has nothing, which is why these people usually have a very low sense of self-worth and tend to resent and hate others with the qualities that they lack. For example, Katherine hates Elena because she is able to inspire loyalty from others without using force or compulsion, which is something Katherine cannot do. Empowered people also have accountability for their actions, because they understand that their destiny is in their own hands rather than in the hands of others. Katherine, on the other hand, blames others for every bad outcome in her life and relies on her status as a "victim" to excuse everything she does.
Another questionable person might be Emily Thorne (Revenge), who is empowered in some ways, but not others. She is extremely smart, independent and accomplished, but despite all of these impressive achievements, she still allows anger and resentment to to get in the way of personal happiness. If you spend most of your energy hating someone else, you are never truly free, because you have given that person power over your life.
Emily Thorne.
ReplyDeleteKatherine Pierce, Emily Thorne and Olivia Dunham
ReplyDeleteKate Beckett is the best!
ReplyDeleteAll these girls become empowered females by taking masculine features. Just because your a female that can fight or yell for 8,000 soldiers to kill slavers, doesn't make you anymore empowered than the thousands of characters exactly like that.
ReplyDeleteWhere is Sansa? Where is the nice character that survives through suffering and torment by using intelligence, petiteness, tears and beauty? Yeah she takes my vote.
Victoria Grayson, Cersei Lannister, Catelyn Stark...
ReplyDeleteI like many of these choices, but I narrowed it down to Buffy, Olivia, and of course Michonne. But I would like to suggest also Juliet on Lost.
ReplyDeleteLet's not forget Kensi and Nell. All the NCIS:LA ladies are pretty awesome.
