Thanks to GallagherBrothers for the heads up.

*** No more doppelgängers ever. OK. That's not exactly true, but I asked about the rather muddled web of doppelgängers, which at least theoretically was relieved by last season's climax. For now, Dries was reassuring.

"I just finished Episode 10. We haven't said it once in 10 episodes," Dries said. "In the writers' room sometimes we'll be like, "Ugh. Maybe this is a doppelgänger thing' and like, 'Nope. Don't say that word. Somebody think of a different idea.' We've been pretty diligent about that. And I'm pretty sure if we say it, it's just to make fun of it. I really am proud of actually the whole doppelgänger thing, but I get it. It's like, 'We did that story, so moving on...'"

*** It's sophomore year in college and that will be semi-relevant. One of the things that always concerned me with the high school years of "Vampire Diaries" was how little time people spent in class, but how high school remained in the background even when none of them had any good reason to still be attending. Yes, I'm concerned by silly things. Well, college was more relevant for the first chunk of last season and then was largely forgotten in the home-stretch. Well, at least in the premiere, Elena has even gone so far as to choose a major and she's attending several classes.

And the Sophomore Year thing will also tie into the overall theme, particularly with Caroline, who is working overtime to reverse the curse/hex on Mystic Falls to allow our supernatural denizens to return home.

"It's important to her, like the town, it's more of a symbolic thing for her and less of a plot-drive, if that makes sense," Dries explained. "We were like, 'We could make this a storyline where they get a bunch of witches and they try to undo the Traveler Spell,' then we're like 'Then we're having scenes with witches and then we're doing spells and no one cars.' So we were like, 'Let's not make that the main story and let's just make it more of the metaphor for what they can't have, which is the ability to go home and be together and sleep in their own beds and stuff like that.' We've always kinda said it's like the metaphor for when you're in your second year of college and it's like, 'OK. Now I'm in college. My home is now where I go home on Thanksgiving or Christmas vacation.' It stops feeling like home after a little while and like, 'This is my life.'"

  1. Yay, S6 is sounding great to me! I'm looking forward to both Ric's and Caroline's stories which sound awesome and I'm also looking forward to seeing how the show is gonna bring back Bonnie and Damon. And in the meantime, I'm eager to see how Elena's grief arc plays out; I love her and love Delena, so Dries reiterating the show's determination to keep their love story going during his absence was music to my ears! I'm very happy to hear that they're definitely done with the doppelganger mythology; it was one of the more draggy aspects of S5 IMO. And yay, more confirmation that they're slowly doing Steroline! Music to my ears, bring it on!

I'm quoting this in the hopes that people will see it and actually listen to what Dries is saying, because the show said as much in 5x18 and people STILL didn't listen and STILL insisted the triangle was on-going, when it was very clear the show had done with the romantic portion of Stelena:

"I don't really call it a triangle, because Stefan has become more of a soul-friend of Elena's"

I know Stelena shippers aren't gonna want to believe it and that's understandable I guess, but I find it weird that non-shippers who hate all aspects of the triangle and say they want it gone keep ignoring what the show and now the exec producers are telling them: that in romantic terms, it IS over.

  2. they say their is a new triangle, and its going to be between Elena Caroline and Stefan. i cant wait for season 6, and i CANNOT wait for the new villain, they say hes going to be really bad

  3. that's mostly ridiculous though, really. While i do prefer Stelena as it were, it be ridiculous and not believable for them now.

  4. I don't think this is a credible source. More than one credible source put out announcements already and let people know when the crossover was already shot. This is a blogger trying to copy an earlier article from a credible source, but this blogger slightly altered a few details and added some that weren't even there. The many spelling and grammar errors also indicate that someone who is not a professional journalist wrote the blog. I hope shippers don't start fighting over the "Elena and Damon love story" or the "slow build" comment about Stefan and Caroline. There's no point.

  5. At least it confirmed my suspicion that the villain for the 1st half would be kai played by chris wood.As for the triangle,it really is over.Delena and steroline are pretty much endgame looks like,i have to admit that even as a former stelena fan.

  6. Of course it's all music to your ears as long as Stefan/Elena is out of the way of your precious Delena, especially if they're doing Steroline to keep Stefan and Elena far more apart. It's obvious that you're there for the Delena diaries, sorry but I can't take you seriously. The overall response to season 5 was awful and season 6 looks like it's going the same way because all they wanna do is ruin friendships like Stefan and Caroline and cater to Delena fans, when people are sick of their relationship. You're practically saying that you don't care if the show is sh%3 a long as you get Delena and that's sad and obviously to not be taken seriously. Stefan and Elena might be over for now, like all good things related to this show but I wouldn't count on it, they might still want to pull something out of the original triangle and even ruin Stelena's past and/or the bond that they still have.

Check out the comment section on hitfix. 9 out of 10 people hated season 5 and are dreading season 6, it's a fact. And yes, it's because Delena puts people off the show and the writers obsession with ships ruined it. Not to mention how repetitive the non-romantic storyines were.

  7. It's true really. The main problem with delena fandom is they just want their couple together but doesn't care at all if the show go downhill in the process. As long as they get what they want, nothing else matters! And caroline dries being a delena fangirl isn't helping things either! It's a shame!

  8. I haven’t heard anything on Ric’s storyline, but I’m really glad he’s back!! I’m also looking forward to S6. Though I felt some parts of S5 were a big yawn, (doppelganger) there was some really good stuff in there too. Personally, i felt the finale was one of the best! Oh, course I’m concerned for Bonnie and Damon and hope they aren’t seperated from the gang too long, the emotion Damon and Elena delivered was stellar IMO!! I’m not a cryer and I almost cried!! It was RIGHT there!! lol Seriously tho, I felt it was some of the best performances EVER! **sigh**. I hope it’s true that the writers will move away from a love triangle....it’s gotten old. Although I do differ in the opinion of Caroline and Stefan.....I do have my heart set on her with Klaus. The man needs redemption and he’s not gonna be able to do it on his own. He needs someone like Caroline. lol

Almost forgot....I hope Damon and Bonnie come back with a better understanding of each other and will share a special (unromantic) bond. I think that would be refreshing. Damon is pretty much a jerk to everybody until he lets them in.

  9. I really enjoyed S5. I wasn't thrilled with some of the doppelganger stuff either (I love the idea behind it, because exploring identity issues in a season about the characters going to college makes sense to me, but I felt the execution got a bit bogged down and dull) and also, I found Liv and Luke a bit of a snooze. But I thought it was another very good season, particularly considering the show was having to adjust to the loss of the Originals, and I'm really excited for S6. I too LOVED the S5 finale! And I DID cry! I never normally cry at TV and this show has now got me to three times! Anna & Pearl finding peace together, Elena's death in S3, and Bonnie and Damon's deaths at the end of S5!

I believe the writers on the love triangle being dunzo. I felt like S5 was intended to explore the lingering guilt, nostalgia, awkwardness surrounding the Stelena split and draw a line under their romantic history and get them to being, as Dries says, soul-friends instead. As for Klaroline, I confess I enjoyed Klaus with Caroline too! I have my heart set on Steroline (shipping it since S2, so I'm committed LOL!) and do believe that's where the show is headed, but I can understand the appeal of Klaroline.

As for Ric, I think his absence was necessary for S4 and S5 to play out as they did, but I'm sooooo pleased he's back! I love him and IMO the timing is just right for his return! His story is meant to be about him struggling to adjust back to the land of the living and it sounds like it should be a really good arc for him.

ITA about Damon and Bonnie. I always love their scenes together and I'm very excited to see them have this arc together.

  10. It's just a TV show and one I enjoy. With all due respect, I don't care whether you or a handful of hitfix commenters do or do not like the current direction of the show. Disliking it is of course your prerogative, just as continuing to enjoy it is mine and that of several million other people. I like the direction S6 looks to be heading in and I'm not going to pretend otherwise just to make you happy. Also please don't imply motives I don't have to my enthusiasm for Steroline; I love them and have done since early S2. IMO they're magic together and I believe they have been the writers plan since early S2, from which point on I believe they've been gradually slow-burning them. And I don't believe the writers need to "do" anything to keep Stefan and Elena apart; the show has transitioned them from lovers to platonic friend and though I'm sure you disagree, I loved how they handled it. We shall have to agree to disagree on Delena putting people off the show, as I don't believe that is the case for the overwhelming majority of the audience at all; quite the reverse, IMO. Since TVD exists to make money and they continue to pursue and foreground Delena, I'd venture to guess that the people making TVD also disagree with you.

"You're practically saying that you don't care if the show is sh%3 a long as you get Delena "

That is completely untrue and I challenge you to find the place in my comment where I implied anything of the sort. I said I was looking forward to S6 and gave several examples of why, only one of which was related to Delena. You are certainly free to disagree with me on the show, but please don't misrepresent my comments.

  11. Please,no more shippers!Im pretty excited about s6 because I think it's gonna have good storylines but I can't stand ships. S1 was incredible and there weren't so many couples. Delena,Stelena,Steroline,Klaroline,Steferine...There are too many!I think Caroline Dries got stuck in her teenager years.

  13. Hitfix has Daniel Fienberg and Alan Sepinwall on their beat, two of the best-regarded television critics there are. This article is by Dan... it's legit.

  14. Anyone else sighing a sigh of relief to the mention of the love triangle being FINALLY over? It took some time for the writers to realize that plot-device was slowly killing their show but they did eventually.
That said, I'm super intrigued about Matt's SL and relationship with Tripp who's apparently not exactly a bad guy? If so, not to brag here - because I'm probably not the first one to have guessed it - but I kinda knew that already. I'm pretty sure he just wants to protect his town from monsters and he's ready to do anything for that because, let's face it the "anti-magic dome" is probably the best thing that's happened to this town in like a thousand years. So yeah he's probably not on board with our heroes' current agenda and there will be "irreconciliable" differences, but boy is he right! Plus, I'm glad Matt will have a storyline that kinda keeps him away from the MF gang for a while even if, it won't last.
As for the new villain being announced here I'm already pumped and intrigued about him, but I'm still careful. I wonder how this one will be able to bring something new in the TVD-verse villain department that's had both Katherine and Klaus. Not counting Silas here, who had potential and was very played kudos to Paul Wesley, but who was a missed opportunity, IMO. So was Quetsyah. But still, he better be good cause his task in being a believable threat to the gang, won't be easy.

  15. I couldn't bring myself to cry or find the Damon/Elena goodbye anything other than liberating, because they are awful to each other as a romantic couple. That and the travelers killed season 5 for me. Plus Nina and Ian's post breakup awkwardness is really palpable when you watch their scenes now. They should get rid of the triangle? Yes, but they should get rid of Delena as well, from what I see around the net and friends, they don't work and the audience despises them (except for long time fans of the pairing). I do agree with you about Steroline! The should stay friends..

  16. I wouldn't count on the triangle being over so soon, especially with at least 44 episodes for the show to go. I remember that during almost 3 seasons people were sure that Lucas and Peyton were over for good on One Tree Hill, and on Lost, when Kate and Sawyer were "together", people though Jack and Kate were done, and what's a better example than Robin and Ted from HIMYM? This is TVD, a couple weeks ago Dries said that the triangles were far from dead, and I personally think that Stefan and Elena will end up together close to the final episodes of the show, that's why they're exploring Damon and Elena so much right now, and they showed that they bring the worst out of each other.

Oh and don't you remember that Stefan made out with "Elena" (Katherine) just 8 episodes ago? He was sure it was Elena and he would still take her back. I also think that Elena still has feelings for Stefan, maybe the Steroline thing is a prop for these feelings. Klaus said that their kind of love never dies after all.

  17. wow, this was a trying interview to read. it was as if I was reading the postscript of a 80s valley girl. "like, like, like, oh my god!" This does not bode well for someone who is suppose to be the head writer of a show. great diction there Ms. Dries.
