Scorpion followed up its solid pilot with an episode that provided a much deeper look at the main characters, in particular Walter and Sylvester. ‘Single Point of Failure’ was a much better episode than the first, keeping the same intensity from the premiere yet having a slightly different tone due to its character study.As with the pilot, the case seems quite far-fetched, though a quick bit of research proves the idea of ‘biohacking’ to exist – though yet to be perfected to the kind of level illustrated during this episode. I actually liked the case this week. Going in, I wasn’t overly sure how the problem of an actual virus as going to be solved by the Scorpion crew, but I was pleasantly surprised at how they were able to solve the case.

Sylvester’s quirkiness was superb in this episode. I particularly loved the scenes with him and the Vlaxco lab – both before entering and during his time inside the lab. Walter was harsh on Sylvester – it’s not really his fault that his OCD makes him an obsessive cleaner – but it made for entertaining viewing.Speaking of Walter, I really enjoyed learning more about his family, as we saw a plot with his sister. It was interesting to see him get emotional for once, both in his clear upset reading the letter or his anger in taking down the hacker.
Character development like this is crucial in a show such as Scorpion. With the main characters being so sociably awkward, we need to see this development in order to fully connect with them. Without it, they aren’t going to be as enjoyable to watch, which will bring the whole show down.

Toby’s arc was interesting. Having received his first pay check for Scorpion, he attempted to get back with his ex-fiancé. However, this attempt failed quite miserably, and he ended up gambling the money he earned. I’m not really sure how I feel about this. I am, however, surprised that Toby loses his money, given that he should be able to use his skills as a behaviourist to pick up on tells (which he demonstrated towards the end of the episode). Loved Cabe’s backstory too. I’m quite looking forward to seeing what actually happened to his daughter, but I’m guessing that it wasn’t a positive outcome.

Great review! U made great points. The only thing I didn't like was that in the introduction were they stated that Paige isn't like them! " She is normal! " It's just a bad remark, people can have a high IQ but still be socially "acceptable". But they redeemed themselves with the way Paige was being part of the team, and I liked how they didn't made Paige wear less make up, than when she was working as a waitress. I really hope it was intentionally done and not just a mistake.

ReplyDeleteGreat review again this week. I agree with you that this was a better episode. I also like the plot better this week, though it is still far fetched. The character development was the strongest part. I'm interested to see where they go from here. Thanks for your insights.
