A weekly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great scenes that we've seen recently on TV.
DOCTOR WHO, "Robot of Sherwood", September 6, 2014, Actors: Peter Capaldi, Tom Riley
The Scene: The Doctor and Robin Hood say goodbye
Justyna Kubica: I should start with the fact that Robin Hood is one of my all-time favorite characters and I loved seeing another version of his story on Doctor Who. Definitely with Clara on that. He and the Doctor had some great moments in the episode but my favorite scene has to be when they say goodbye. First Clara's farewell to Robin, then the Doctor's and finally the lovely reunion with Marian was a great way to end the episode. The thing about the heroes is that they don't really see themselves as heroes but their actions inspire others and the stories about them, the legends have a power to give hope to all those who hear them. And isn't it really the point? Two great people, despite their many differences, found this quiet respect for each other at the end. Twelve's emotional side is slowly being revealed and I can't wait to see more of that.
Sandi wich: A tough choice this week as it was such a great episode filled with superb scenes to pick from. I'm going to go for the Doctor and Robin Hood saying goodbye to each other though as it was beautifully crafted piece of dialogue about their shared mythological and legendary status. After their banter and rivalry throughout the episode it was good to see that they actually admired each other in their own way, so much so that the Doctor even reunited Hood with Marion... Twelve is far more caring than he lets on. And: A special shout out to the photo of Patrick Troughton as Robin Hood from the BBC's 1953 series of Robin Hood. Just a nice little nod to one of my favourite Doctors, and boy didn't he look dashing!
MISTRESSES, "'Til Death Do Us Part", September 1, 2014, Actors: Jes Macallan, Brett Tucker
The Scenes: Joss realises Harry is the one & Harry confesses he's in love with Joss
Gavin Hetherington: The entire 'Joss realises Harry is the one sequence' from the balcony moment, when Joss is looking down at him and the shot is gorgeous, to Joss running down the beach to him. The relationship is controversial, definitely, but there's no denying the moment was beautifully shot and had some emotional impact.
Klutzy girl: The scene on the beach where Harry finally confesses he's in love with Joss and they start kissing. I started shipping them for fun last season because I noticed their chemistry but I never once expected this to actually happen. I'm still excited about it, and I can't wait to see what happens next season. However, if the show is cancelled, that was a perfect note to end on.
OUTLANDER, "Rent", September 6, 2014, Actors: Caitriona Balfe and more
The Scene: Claire realizes she's misjudged clan McKenzie (picked by Darth Locke)
RAY DONOVAN, "Sunny", August 31, 2014, Actors: Omar Dorsey, Kerris Dorsey and more
The Scene: Cookie kills Marvin and his father
Darth Locke: Cookie kills Marvin and his father, while Bridget hides in the back seat!
TEEN WOLF, "A Promise to the Dead", September 1, 2014, Actors: Ryan Kelley, J.R. Bourne, The Scene: Parrish encourages Chris to keep fighting
Justyna Kubica: I don't think I realized just how much I actually missed Allison until this scene. When Chris told Parrish that he has nothing left, nothing that makes him want to fight to stay alive, I remembered how lonely he must feel and how much I would love to see Allison looking out for her dad like she used to. Such a sad scene, beautifully acted by J.R. Bourne. And a great chance for a relatively new character like Parrish to show what a great guy he can be. It usually takes a while for me to really like and care about new people on the show but this Deputy keeps on making a truly good impression on everyone and he's quickly growing on me. And now it seems like he saved the life of one of my favorites by giving him a reason to fight, to survive and keeping him from bleeding out. If only to help those his daughter loved and face his dangerous sister. After all the craziness of the season I don't know what to expect from the finale but I'm really excited to see how the things are gonna end for everyone. Hopefully better than last time (meaning no deaths like in season 3, clearly still not over Allison). Kudos!
THE BRIDGE, "Rakshasa", September 3, 2014, Actors: Diane Kruger and more
The Scene: End scene with Sonya returning home
DarkUFO: End scene with Sonya returning home with the contract killer waiting for her in the dark.

Not a lot of things I watch on TV lately. So I'm re-watching some of my old shows or catching up with the ones I missed. Currently finished Arrow and Smallville (8-10), now watching ER (9-15) and Grey's Anatomy seasons 2, 3 and 5, and Buffy season 2.
ReplyDeleteAnd this week's honorable mentions:
Teen Wolf - Sheriff offers to take Stiles and Malia for dinner
Doctor Who - The Best Archer contest & The three shoot an arrow together
Yep! Claire misjudging the scots isn't as clear in the book. I mean, you get it, but without this aha moment like it's shown in this episode.
ReplyDeletedefinitely a memorable moment!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm really loving Parrish on Teen Wolf :) Ryan Kelley is doing a fantastic job playing him as well.
ReplyDeleteThe Bridge: The massacre at Red Ridge.
ReplyDeleteI voted for the Teen Wolf scene, which was really my favorite out of the list, and I also voted for the scene from Mistresses where Joss realizes Harry's "the one." I stumbled onto the Mistresses scene and I really liked how well-written and filmed it was.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't able to watch every Teen Wolf episode when I was catching up before watching Season 4, but from what I saw, I didn't consider Allison a very likable character. I'm probably not the only person who was relieved to see the end of any drama surrounding her. She was Scott's first love and she was a hunter, but that's it. I'm glad the Teen Wolf writers are brave enough to kill off a major character when the character has served their purpose on the show. A lot of TV producers fear internet backlash too much, particularly on Twitter. It's good to know that not everyone answers completely to fans and shippers. It means that there will always be surprises and the show remains suspenseful. The only issue now is Chris. He's sort of aimless now that his sister is a werepanther or something and the rest of his family is dead. It's at a point where he might go bad, die fighting, or leave town after a series of very unfortunate events. The upcoming episode is probably elongated because there will be significant plot twists and changes in characters and storylines, and no one wants to end the season on too big of a cliffhanger.
I also loved when Stiles' dad offered to take Stiles and Malia to dinner. It was something very normal in the middle of a chaotic point in the season. I have to give kudos to these writers.
ReplyDeleteMy two favorite scenes as well :)
ReplyDeleteHeartbreaking, bittersweet and beautifully acted!
I'm super behind on almost everything! (which is why I have sadly been lacking in scenes lately), but I'm trying to catch up on The Leftovers and the The Strain this week! I just finsihed rewatching Boardwalk Empire in time for the new (and final) season!!!
ReplyDeleteI voted for "Mistresses". I loved Harry's confession of love at the end.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving EVERY scene of Outlander, picking a single one is quite hard. But as said before--the "Ah-HA!" moment on screen is perfect! Love it!
ReplyDeleteWhen Claire trips over Jamie who's sleeping outside her door at the Inn---and the subsequent dialogue...the eyes, oh the eyes.....
