Scene Of The Week - September 14, 2014 - POLL

Sep 15, 2014

A weekly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great scenes that we've seen recently on TV.

BOARDWALK EMPIRE "Golden Days for Boys and Girls", September 7, 2014
The Scene: Opening monologue
Darth Locke:
Opening 1884 Coin Toss/Boys Swimming Underwater with 'honest and true boys' monologue. Very beautiful and well choreographed scene.

DALLAS, "Victims of Love", September 8, 2014, Actors: Antonio Jaramillo, Judith Light and more, The Scene: Luis and some of the drug cartel visit Harris and Judith Ryland
Gavin Hetherington:
When Luis and some of the drug cartel visits Harris and Judith Ryland at their home with a pair of Candace's hands that have been cut off and a live video link to Ann Ewing and Emma tied up. You could hear Judith's heart break when she saw Emma and realised she wasn't as in control as she thought.

DOCTOR WHO, "Listen", September 13, 2014, Actors: Jenna Coleman and more
The Scene: Clara talks to the young Doctor
Justyna Kubica:
We're all afraid of things. But it's how we deal with our fears that really speaks volumes about who we are. In a surprising twist of the episode the TARDIS takes Clara to see a very young and scared Doctor, sleeping alone in a barn, the same barn he visits as the War Doctor with "the Moment". I really loved that little connection and a memory from The Day Of The Doctor. And how wonderful it was to see something from the Doctor's childhood. We know him for so long and still there are so many new things to learn about him. Brilliant. I'm not entirely happy with how deep Clara constantly finds herself in the Doctor's timeline but it was such a great scene that I'm willing to overlook it. In her beautiful speech Clara talks about understanding and accepting the fear, using it as a force for something truly good. And leaves a little boy with a toy soldier without a gun, which feels absolutely right for the Doctor. The theme of the episode is nicely showed here. And the entire montage is so very well done, with all the beautiful words and performances. Kudos to the cast and crew for their great work!
Sandi: The montage while Clara talks to the young Doctor. Yes. The speech itself is a paradox of sorts, but it's one that I can forgive as the gist of it is something many parents have told a child when they are afraid, in the general scheme of things that in itself isn't too important. The John Hurt/barn flashback was a nice tie in to the overall theme of fear that the Doctor feels, and how it can be harnessed for good. Her leaving a broken toy soldier for the young Doctor seemed very right as he has always had trouble with guns, so that was a nice touch. I also liked how it made Clara understand her own fear when it came to Danny and letting her barriers down. As someone who's not into having romance take up too much time in the show, this episode was very effective at getting the couple together without too much fuss.

FINDING CARTER, "The Long Goodbye", September 9, 2014, Actors: Kathryn Prescott, Cynthia Watros, The Scene: Carter and Elizabeth talk in the car
Klutzy girl:
Carter and Elizabeth talk in the car, and she actually calls her "Mom" for the first time. The "I love you" was unexpected too but also pretty adorable. I'm hoping this continues but I doubt it will.

GIRL MEETS WORLD, "Girl Meets Smackle", September 12, 2014, Actor: Danielle Fishel
The Scene: Topanga realizes that she and Cory may have ruined others
Klutzy girl:
Topanga comes to the realization that she and Cory may have ruined others. It was a hilarious - and most likely true - thought. Their love is epic and always will be.

HAVEN, "See No Evil", September 11, 2014
The Scene: The earthquake makes the Lighthouse collapse
Gavin Hetherington:
The earthquake that made the Lighthouse collapse and the runway leading to it. It was pretty good effects for the show, and it was pretty suspenseful too. Was a great start to a new season of Haven.

OUTLANDER, "The Garrison Commander", September 13, 2014, Actors: Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Tobias Menzies, The Scenes: Jonathan Randall discusses his darkness & Claire and Jamie discuss their upcoming marriage
Darth Locke:
Jonathan Randall discusses his darkness scene/Jamie flashback flogging scene.
Nirat Anop: Claire and Jamie sitting in the grass discussing their upcoming marriage.

SONS OF ANARCHY, "Black Widower", September 9, 2014, Actors: Katey Sagal and more
The Scene: Gemma lies about who killed Tara
Sandi:
Katey Sagal is on top of her game, as ever. Gemma's internal struggle against what really happened and what she sincerely wants to believe happened makes her a fascinating character. There has to be a point in this final season where all these house of cards lies that she surrounds herself with have to come tumbling down though, and it's going to be a joy to watch it happen too. I can't wait for Jax to see his mother as she really is, after seeing his terrible revenge in this episode you can't begin to imagine what he will do when he finds out What Gemma Really Did!

TEEN WOLF, "Smoke and Mirrors", September 8, 2014, Actors: Tyler Posey, Tyler Hoechlin and more, The Scenes: Scott fights Peter & Derek transforms into a wolf
Justyna Kubica:
Derek turns into a True Wolf. I was quite afraid that after all the hints and Derek's story for the last couple of seasons there is a chance that he might actually die and that it was what the writers were preparing us for a while now. Fortunately that was not a case. More than that, Derek's powers were only gone temporary so that he can come back much, much stronger. Not as a werewolf we used to know but as both an actual wolf and a human with enough power to destroy a Berserker with his bare hands. That was such an awesome surprise I have to say. I hope it means that he's going to be winning most of his fights in the future. Would be great not to worry about him and have him actually take care of others, like his mother used to and not always be so close to death. He has grown so much since season 1. Loved the reveal and I'm really excited to see how his journey is going to look in season 5. Oh, the hiatus! Kudos to the cast and crew for their great work in this finale!
Gavin Hetherington: Scott kicks serious ass in the finale. He crushes the Berserker skull with so much strength and then actually goes a bit beserk himself on Peter.
Klutzy girl: Derek transforms into a wolf - like his mother - and basically tells Kate he's better than she ever will be. It was a wonderful moment and I'm excited to see what this means for him next season.

THE BRIDGE, "Eidolon", September 10, 2014, The Scene: The family driving behind the "dead bodies" van gets splattered in blood (picked by Sharon Seymour)

THE LEFTOVERS, "The Prodigal Son Returns", September 7, 2014, Actors: Justin Theroux, Carrie Coon and more, The Scenes: Kevin hears Laurie speak again & Kevin encounters Holy Wayne dying & Kevin reads the Bible on Patti's grave & Kevin makes a wish & Nora sits at the breakfast table with her "family"
Geo N:
Kevin hearing Laurie speak for the first time since she joined the Guilty Remnant, screaming their daughters name, "Jill!", and Kevin's subsequent saving of Jill from the burning GR House was a great scene for the finale.
Sharon Seymour: Nora sitting at the breakfast table with her "family". Very creepy but still made me cry.
DarkUFO: Kevin encounters Holy Wayne dying in the toilets.
Francesco B: Kevin reading the Bible on Patti's grave.
Darth Locke: Kevin makes a wish, as Wayne begins to die.

THE STRAIN, "The Disappeared", September 7, 2014, Actors: Richard Sammel, David Bradley and more, The Scenes: Eichorst is turned by The Master & Setrakian gets his hands crushed by The Master
Geo N:
Although, it was a little less than what most people suspected, I enjoyed the final scene of The Strain where we find out how and when Eichorst was granted eternal life at the same time The Master's face is finally revealed.
Sharon Seymour: Setrakian gets his hands crushed by The Master.
DarkUFO: Eichorst is turned by The Master.

Z NATION, "Puppies and Kittens", September 12, 2014
The Scene: Baby turns Zombie
DarkUFO:
Had to include this as it was so bad it was awesome!

  1. The opening scene to Listen is the best and creepiest setup I have seen in a Doctor Who story in many a long year.

  2. I picked the Girl Meets World scene and the Teen Wolf Scene where Derek transforms into a wolf. Scott's fight with Peter was lame. SOMEONE should have jumped in and killed Peter. The Girl Meets World scene was very nostalgic because while I was too old to be "ruined by the idea of Cory and Topanga," it made me wonder if ABC or Disney got any hate mail over it. That wouldn't have been good, though. I actually think I remember Topanga breaking up with Cory briefly for the same reason that Auggie's little girlfriend stressed him out. I'm not sure, I watched those episodes a long time ago.

  3. Loved Capaldi in that scene, it was so very Doctor like :)

  4. Everything about The Leftovers was amazing. I'd add two scenes to the list:

Kevin getting back in town. The Town's people attacking the GR, and burning the dolls of The Departed.

And Nora coming downstairs, and seeing the dolls of her family, sitting at the table where they departed from. I really thought by her reaction, she was going to blow her brains out.

  5. Outlander and the Leftovers killed it this week!

  6. All of The Leftovers Finale.

  7. Teen Wolf: Yep I thought those 2 scenes were the best as well.

My favorite was Derek turns into a wolf.

  8. Teen Wolf: Derek turns into a full wolf, Sheriff Stilinski brings a bomb to a berserker fight, and Stile's discovers he's chained to a desk. When your son hangs with werewolves and saves lives...your punishment techniques must be creative. :-)

Outlander: Jack Randall tells Claire about his darkness. That was the longest scene I can remember seeing ever....no commercial breaks, just building tension. I was absolutely riveted. If I could only pick one scene this week. This would be it.

Doctor Who: Clara, Rupert Pink and the Doctor face the thing from under the bed that's now sitting on the bed.

  9. Sons of Anarchy and the 2 scenes of The Strain is what I voted for

  10. Both Outlander scenes, but Randal gets the edge for creepiness.

  11. I voted for the Scott/Peter fight in Teen Wolf but it was diminished a lot by Scott not killing Peter...im still sour over that...
