Resurrection - Revelations - Review: "It's Not You"

29 Sept 2014

We have all seen or, at least, heard of apocalyptic shows on TV. They seem to be everywhere now and on every channel. Actually, they are my favorite kind of entertainment. I love seeing or reading about how people react in situations like that. It's why some of my favorite programs are The Walking Dead and The Leftovers. What would you do? How do you think you could survive? Well, what if the revers were true? What if, instead of ninety percent of the population turning into flesh-eating Zombies (By the way, I'm starting a movement where everyone should capitalize the word 'Zombie') or 2% of the global population vanishing into thin air for some unknown reason, the people we loved and cared about came back...just as they appeared when the left? It's the anti-apocalypse story. It's a great premise and one that Resurrection tackles creatively, uniquely and in an extremely fun way.

Resurrection returned Sunday night with a great season two premiere. Season one ended with a major cliffhanger as it was revealed that Marty is actually the child with the crescent shaped birthmark. A family - a returned family - told a story last season of their baby that went missing long ago in a flood. The only description they could give is that their child had a crescent shaped birthmark on its neck and it is one of the last images we see before the season ended.

There are few answers given each week in contrast to the litany of questions presented. I enjoy seeing the twists and turns that each episode goes through and ends on and the season two premiere ended with a great one. Of course, with more questions comes more answers. Where did Caleb vanish to? Where do the returned go to between their living states? And so on and so forth. Like most programs, it is not the destination, but the journey.

The season two premiere picks up, seemingly, where the season one finale ended - with Jacob and Marty attempting to escape being captured by the army. We learn that a week has actually passed with Marty attempting to recall that much of his life. We know throughout the episode that he is, in fact, a returned, but we still are a little clueless as to the process they go through. The closest we have come to understanding it is when Rachael, Pastor Tom's old love interest with the puzzling pregnancy, dies and returns by that episode's end. But, like I said, with more answers comes more questions. Where did Marty go for a week? why is there no scar? Why does he have no memory of it? Hopefully this season will answer some of our burning questions regarding the mythology.

I suspect that Caleb will be back at any moment this season, but not exactly sure when. Jacob had some dreams involving him in the first season that I would like to see evolve into something or at least called upon. Jacob also has some sort of power that I'm sure will be, not only addressed like his grandmother did, but fleshed out more. It appears that his dreams or thoughts have a sort of psychic intuition. I t will be neat to see that explored.

To be honest, I thought Resurrection lacked in certain areas when the first season aired. It wasn't until the last quarter of the season that I fell in love with this show and the mysteries we are presented with each week. Season two looks very promising right from the start. The writing seems better than season one already with last season feeling very rushed at times. Now that we have thirteen episodes instead of eight the story get be fleshed out more and the mythology can be examined further.

Thoughts and Discussion

- Did you notice...Jacob and Marty both woke up in a field of short, grass-like foliage when they 'Returned'.

- Both, Jacob and Marty, also wake up with water all around them. Remember water plays a very symbolic part in the series. Last season,Jacob's reflection was seen in the water tank when his childhood best friend, Tom, visits him in the hospital; Caleb's image is seen in the water tank when he vanishes into thin air from his prison cell.

- Did you notice...Red is also a an important plot element as Jacob's grandmother, also a returned, is seen wearing a red shirt.

- What is the relation between the returned and the location they return to?

- Why did Maggie say Rachael is four months along instead of three? Does time work differently wherever they go? Does it, maybe, have something to do with the increase in metabolism of the 'returned'?

- Who is the mysterious government agency that are quarantining the 'returned'? What do they know and how are they involved? Do you think Agent Bellamy will help them? I think he should, at least, say he will, but really not. One thing he should definitely NOT do is keep it from Maggie, Lol, that will be bad.

- Michelle Fairley, as Catelyn Stark...I mean, Lady Margaret...as Margaret Langston is exceptional. She is such a great actress and she did a wonderful job as the matriarch of the Langston Family in the premiere. P.S. Does anyone else think she is hiding something?

- Do you think Fred will side with good guys now that his Mom is also one of the 'returned'?

- The cicadas are back! Remember these little insects from season one? There were many theories floating around about them and what they represent. The best one being each cicada is representative of a returned. If you notice Marty passes by a few when running towards town after he wakes up in the field in the beginning of the episode. Maybe we will get a better understanding of their role this season?

Thank you all for checking out my Reviews! It's great to be back talking about Resurrection, I had a lot of fun talking about each episode with everyone last season and look forward with doing it again in Season Two! Plus, now we get 13 episodes instead of 8! Please comment below so we can discuss the episode further!

  1. I didnt knew you review for Resurrection too *feeling kind of a stalker here* *goes to hide in a dark corner* xD.
It was an interesting premiere, he has come back twice, the same number of times as Rachel, so if we saw a kind of advance in Rachel's pregnancy maybe that's why Marty doesnt have the bullet scar on his chest, it's something like "we are going to leave you like you were before kind of thing" but he doesnt remember, not because the goverment did something to him, he doesnt remember cause he died. He might be an unique case like Jacob's, i mean Marty grew up having no memories whatsoever of his previous life (when he died as a child) and he came back the same age he died and grew up to be what he is now.... that leads the questions:
Could there be any more "returned" that doesnt know what they are?.
Does the goverment agency knows Marty was a returned with that test i suspect they take with his blood?.
When the goverment woman talk to Marty she said it was better for him to help if he doesnt want to end up where the others are (i know this is an stupoid question), she said that meaning that noone will claim him, like Jacob's mother said he stayed with them cause they claimed him, so if noone claims Marty he was going to end up there, right?.... but now his family is there and im pretty sure he will go to whatever that place is one way or another xD
Jacob is another thing, he sort of have a connection with everyone, not with Marty cause he didnt felt him when he came back but with some other he does. But he knows Marty is a returned i'm pretty sure of that so why hasnt he told him that yet?, what is he waiting for?.
The grandma is as weird as Caleb, i dont trust her one bit. I expect her to turn into a Zombie and start killing everyone at any moment. She is too good to be true.
I couldnt stop thinking that this is totally oposite to "The Leftovers" and asking myself, how would Nora react if her family came back, same as they went and Nora being 10 years older, i just think the poor woman would die of a heart attack right there!.
Great review as aways and i had no idea about those cicadas things you talked about they are a thing?, i guess i have to pay more attetion to details, tho you always help with those.

  2. Personally, I'm starting to tire of getting strung along by the writers and producers. The same quality is here in the second season, but I need some answers. With their good writing, those could create some more mysteries, and that would be OK, but it seems that they just keep adding more and more mysteries. I'm beginning to wonder if we are ever going to get any answers or if the plan is just to keep the story going like this.

  3. I understand what you mean. I, as well, would love some more answers. Not a lot, but some if they are going for a lengthy series that would be about 5 or 6 seasons. I would be disappointed if this season went the way of Under The Dome, a show I love, despite it's issue of not revealing any answers about the titular Dome.

  4. Thanks Ron, I appreciate the kind words!

Lol, yeah i Review This series too Ron, Glad to see you enjoy this series as well! I look forward to reading your thoughts about each episode! The shows I Review are The Blacklist, The Strain, Resurrection, Sons Of Anarchy, and The Leftovers.

I love that question you posed and it's something I didn't think of, "Are there any other people out there that DON'T know they are 'returned'?
Very good question and I wonder if the writers will explore that in a future arc?

That is not a stupid question at all either...I wonder as well if Marty will go back to save his family from wherever the government is keeping them captive. And I agree with you on the Grandma situation. Something about her just makes me not want to trust her. Maybe she is in on something with Caleb?

Nice to see your comments here also Ron. Remember there are no stupid questions. And you actually bring up some very good points. Have a great week bud!

  5. Have you seen the promo? Apparantly, Rachael's baby is growing twice as fast.

  6. Nice review. i love Resurrection and i love the pace and the stories. I don't mind this 'answers' right now cuz I Think it won't do ay good for the show. I like that is a story about family and people and relationships. Is good to see the actors showing emotions with gestures and stuff. I wish more people could appreciate those things instead of wanting early answers.

  7. I have not seen the Promo, no. I tend to stay away from promo's unless for specific reasons. I don't like the way they create them to make it look like one thing is happening when it's not. But that piece of info is nice to know. Thanks bud
