The Big 3 were neck-and-neck for overnight household dominance, with ABC (which included the New England/Kansas City football match-up pre-empting its regularly scheduled line-up in Boston and Kansas City) one-tenth of a household rating point ahead of both CBS and NBC. But the home of “The Voice” and “The Blacklist,” NBC, is poised for victory in adults 18-49 (and the other key young adult demos). And CBS is the most improved.
“The Big Bang Theory” on CBS topped the evening, with a 10.8 rating/16 share in the household overnights at 8 p.m. And it led into an encore telecast of “Big Bang” at a third-place 7.8.11 at 8:30 p.m.
Very promising for CBS was episode two of drama “Scorpion” at an 8.7/13 from 9-10 p.m. (#2t), which was just two-tenths of a rating point (or two percent) below last week’s 8.9/13 debut (which translated into 13.83 million viewers and a 3.2 rating/9 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same Day data). “Scorpion” built from the “Big Bang Theory” encore lead-in by 12 percent (versus dropping by 20 percent last week from the 11.1/17 for an original edition at 8:30 p.m.). “Scorpion” also increased from year-ago sitcoms “2 Broke Girls” (5.2/ 8 on 9/30/13) and “Mom” (4.9/ 7) by an average of 72 percent. And positive DVR usage based on the Live + 3 Day data last week (+4.12 million viewers and 1.4 rating points in adults 18-49) means that breaking up the perennial two-hour Monday sitcom block might not have been such a bad idea after all. Note to BH…keep smiling!

And “NCIS: Los Angeles” trailed its year-ago season-opener (9.8/15 on Tuesday 9/24/13 out of “NCIS”) by 39 percent. But this was still 46 percent above failed year-ago occupant “Hostages” (4.1/ 7), and there is every reason to believe “NCIS: Los Angeles” will have an advantage in the young demos opposite “Castle” on ABC.
“Castle” opened its seventh season with an approximate (and first place) 7.1/12 at 10 p.m., which held 82 percent of the 9:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “Dancing With the Stars” (8.7/13). And “Castle” beat competing “The Blacklist” on NBC (6.8/11) and aforementioned “NCIS: Los Angeles” on CBS (6.0/10) by 4 percent and 18 percent, respectively. The year-ago season-opener was a 7.4/12 on 9/24/13. But “The Blacklist” will have the advantage demographically, of course. And “Castle’s” overnight rating could be inflated due to the two markets airing football.
Earlier in the evening on ABC was “Dancing With the Stars” at an estimated 8.5/13 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m., which was an approximate nine percent below the 9.3/14 one year earlier. Remember, those two ABC affiliates carrying football, Boston and Kansas City, are included.
Over at NBC, two hours of “The Voice” was successfully on the overnight map with an 8.6/13 from 8-10 p.m., peaking at a first-place 8.9/13 at 9:30 p.m. Year-to-year, “The Voice” dipped by only three percent (vs. an 8.9/13 on 9/30/13). And it led into aforementioned demo dominant “The Blacklist” at a second-place 6.8/11 at 10 p.m., which opposite the season premieres on ABC and CBS dipped by 13 percent from the 7.8/13 season-opener one week earlier. Regardless, the 10 p.m. hour last night does prove there is room for three very different dramas.
In other episode two news, Fox drama “Gotham” maintained 93 percent of its week-ago overnight debut with a 5.3/ 8 (#4) from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, this is 10 percent above year-ago occupant “Bones” (4.8/ 7 on 9/30/13). And an increase of 1.8 rating points among adults 18-49 last week (to a 5.0 rating, based on the Live + 3 Day data) means “Gotham” could very well be the demographic hit the network was hoping for. Two episodes in and “Gotham” looks like a keeper.
Far less impressive on Fox was sophomore lead-out “Sleepy Hollow” at a 3.4/ 5 in the overnights from 9-10 p.m., which was down by 11 percent from its already diluted season-opener one week earlier (3.8/ 6 on Sept. 22) and down by 35 percent from the 5.2/ 8 on the year-ago evening.
Capping off the evening (and still hiding from the early season competition) was CW special, “The iHeartradio Music Festival” at a mere 0.6/ 1 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m.

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

I have no clue because the show has became more and more old skewing as the years go by (so it's harder to grasp something from the overnights) and also because the numbers seem to be messed up by the preemption. So I need demo numbers (possibly final ones) for that one.

ReplyDeleteOh, I know. I expect it to lead in the demo. But NBC has to be hoping for some growth in its live audience, especially if it intends to move it Thursdays.
ReplyDeleteFOX fascinates me this season from a purely academic point of view. I really do not know up until where should we take the "relative ratings only" motto. If we continue to stick by it indefinitely, then I am pretty sure we are at most a year away from starting to treat FOX like the CW (I don't mean that they will have the same raw numbers but that they will be judged in a completely different league than the other nets and not really expected to be competitive with them).
ReplyDeleteIn any case, I doubt Sleepy Hollow is even on FOX's radar. Their entire midweek schedule is chaotic, the only thing remotely looking healthy is 10 year old Bones and that's with a 1.6. Probably the worst that could happen to Sleepy Hollow would be considered unworthy of the Gotham lead-in and moved to a lower priority night (this assuming the ratings don't free fall too much). Remember that they are struggling to pull 1s (or will be very soon) Tuesdays at 8, Tuesdays at 9, Wednesdays at 8 ,Wednesdays at 9, Thursdays at 9 (me guessing), Fridays at 8 and Fridays at 9. That's a lot of schedule to fill!
NCIS: LA seems like the perfect show for Fridays at 8:00. I'm not a move this season is in the cards, but if TAR can't improve, perhaps it'll move there next season. If CBS leaves Scorpion where it is on Mondays, they'll want to use that slot to launch a new drama.

ReplyDeleteFOX have so many problems that SH is still one of their strongest shows even with the currently low demo. I think S3 for SH is pretty much guaranteed at this point.
ReplyDeleteI was talking more in terms of next season. This season I don't see them moving it at all. Maybe there was a remote chance if both it and Gotham were year-round shows (which they should be by the way, FOX is in too bad shape to let go its two best weekday performers just like that), but not with limited orders for both, they have nothing else to premiere during fall that would be worthier of a Gotham lead-in.

ReplyDeleteIt was only preempted in KC and Boston...KC isn't going to have any impact on the ratings and New England was playing so poorly I'm sure many, many, many fans had to change the channel so I'm not really anticipating too much effect.
ReplyDeleteI think it depends on what else the network does. The Mentalist is done, but The Good Wife probably gets one final season (if not more). I figure that at least Stalker or CSI: Cyber will get cancelled. But still, there's just not a lot of room. I figure Criminal Minds will get at least one more season, as would Blue Bloods and Hawaii 5-O. Survivor isn't going anywhere. Madame Secretary will probably have to drop a lot more to not be renewed. And then there's the comedies. Given that a lot of its dramas are old, CBS needs to launch something new. If Scorpion continues to work, will CBS leave it there and use the spot to launch a new drama? Will it move the show to Thursdays, if continues to skew young? Right now, CBS only has three hours of comedy, and it still has a bunch that have yet to premiere.

- The McHarthys cancelled
- The Amazing Race is held for summer post Big Brother or cancelled entirely
- Madam Secretary is cancelled
- No midseason drama is renewed, as usual
- New Orleans, Stalker and Scorpion score renewals
So schedule would be:
Monday: 2 Broke Girls + New Comedy + Scorpion + LA
Tuesday: NCIS + New Orlenas + New Drama
Wednesday: Survivor + Criminal Minds + Stalker
Thursday: Big Bang + New Comedy + Mom + The Millers

Sunday: Elementary + The Good Wife + CSI
Or something of the like.
Sleepy Hollow will probably be fine if it can stay above a 1.5. It's still early days but Red Band Society, The Mindy Project, Utopia and The New Girl are all in much bigger trouble.

I think it will get mostly a three tenth drop.
ReplyDelete- Yay for Scorpion! I hope those are legit! It held very well from that repeat rating! LA did about what I expected from it. I thought people were way optimistic about it yesterday. New Orleans only got a 2.5 in the much better slot and for the series premiere. Anything close to a 2.0 here would be a win for CBS and that's what they got.
ReplyDelete- On NBC, The Blacklist came back to earth but it's still doing great business. The Voice shot up some crazy 0.8 as soon as TBBT is over, so I am pretty sure it is just being hurt by it in the first half hour, no long term damage most likely.
- FOX still did ok and Gotham didn't have that big of a drop considering the initial hype.Sleepy Hollow held okayish, but the premiere number wasn't that good to begin with. Still perfeclty safe though of course.
- I will reserve judgement on ABC until finals.
I say it's actually amazing for Scorpion considering the lead-in downgrade. It's a ridiculous huge held coming off such a promoted premiere, even not accounting for the lead-in decline.
ReplyDeleteIf NBC decides to go through with that move, I expect them to use the break to the show's advantage by doing stuff like running a marathon or two leading up to the Superbowl episode.
ReplyDeleteUnless I missed something, the show wasn't on regularly during the summer. It did just start on Netflix, which will definitely be helpful in the coming months, but broadcast is still king.
I thought Gotham was going to get a 2.9 - 3.0 but 2.8 is okay too.
ReplyDeleteI dnt think I've ever seen a .4 adjustment down even with football. Good chance it will stay above two.
ReplyDeleteAlso a request, dnt always be so pessimistic abt Castle. It's ratings are not huge. But It's ratings are fine and stable. So don't be so alarmed all the time.

Castle is the little show that can. It always stays so stable will others drop like a dead body over the course of the season. Sth to be very proud of.
Sleepy Hollow's half hours - 1.8/1.7
ReplyDeleteAs JA said on his Twitter feed, that's the same rating as Hostages last year, but the difference is that NCIS: LA could grow in the coming weeks. So, not all hope is lost for the show.

ReplyDeleteThis is true. Castle is one of the most stable shows around and, I believe, up until around spring, Castle was actually even last year with the year before.
ReplyDeleteI know that in adjustments the half hours don't mean anything, but with DWTS only get a 2.1 in it's 9:30 portion and Castle getting a 2.4 would that mean that it's not inflated? Boston is EST (that's the bigger market, right?) so it shouldn't be because of time zones, correct? I'm figuring it's possible because ratings probably have no logic. lol
ReplyDeleteNCIS itself was down 20% and that was with a timeslot upgrade (no major 4.7 from Shield in the hour). I don't think LA's ~35% is all that bad considering the major timeslot downgrade (lower lead-in, less compatible lead-in, much more drama competition, later hour)

ReplyDeleteScorpion did incredibly well in my opinion. It would already be a very impressive hold without taking into account the massive lead-in downgrade, but it's excellent once we account for it.

Ouch for NCIS: LA. Huge drop since last season's premiere.
OUAT and Resurrection both rose 3 tenths in finals and Revenge one tenth.

Agreed. There's still a lot left to this season, but so far, it's proving to be quite the surprise. As I noted elsewhere, it's even more important for CBS given how old most of its dramas are.

ReplyDeleteDrop for Blacklist, but still pretty great ratings. NCIS LA down 1.1 from its premiere last year. Though, last week it actually premiered during premiere week, which may or may not have had a slight impact. But given that Hostages premiered to a 1.8 last year, it's a Monday 10pm improvement for CBS.
For a 7th season show at 10pm, that's great for Castle, even if it adjuts down.
ReplyDeleteIt was obvious that Gotham would begin to slip after the premiere, but I'm pleased that it's not that big a drop (look at AoS, although that might be an unfair comparison because having premiered much higher than Gotham, it had way more viewers to lose). I hope it stabilizes at 2.5 and up. Once TBBT, the biggest geek magnet on network TV, is gone, that ought to help.
I didn't know NCIS LA move to Monday, have to said they did better than h50 when they were on Monday.

Fox really is getting closer and closer to CW's numbers all the time.I think they will have to judge their shows differently - possibly soon.
ReplyDeleteShows on Friday tend not to do as well, even though there is less competition, so that's not really ideal unless SH really has a fanbase with numbers.
ReplyDeleteWell, to be frank, as a SH viewer, I think it's their fault. Starting this season with that 1 year later dream sequence after such a long break and leaving viewers wondering what was going on for what felt like too many minutes? It almost turned me off, and it probably turned off quite a few of the more casual viewers. It's no surprise to me that the half-hours ratings of that episode were 2.2\1.8..
