The New Orleans Saints at the Dallas Cowboys on “Sunday Night Football” lifted NBC to victory with an estimated 13.5 rating/22 share in the household overnights from 8:30-11:30 p.m., which was 10 percent above the Pittsburgh Steelers at the Carolina Panthers match-up one week earlier (12.3/20 on Sept. 21). Earlier in the evening on NBC was pre-game “Football Night in America” at a 1.5/ 3 at 7 p.m. (#4), a 2.6/ 4 at 7:30 p.m. (#4) and an 8.6/14 at 8 p.m. (#2). With football on the agenda, expect NBC to rule Sunday in fourth quarter.
Over at CBS, results are estimated due to an approximate 15-minute late start caused by NFL Football. And the half-hour estimated breakdown is as follows:

In a night of season-premieres, ABC opened with 7 p.m. clips show special “Once Upon a Time: Storybrooke Has Frozen Over” at a 3.1/ 5 (#3) in the household overnights. That led into a 5.5/ 8 (#3) for the fourth season-premiere of “Once Upon a Time” at 8 p.m., which was six percent above the 5.2/ 8 on the year-ago evening (which translated into 8.52 million viewers and a 2.6/ 7 in the demo, based on the Live + Same Day data). And the second season premiere of drama “Resurrection” scored a 4.8/ 7 at 9 p.m., which maintained 86 percent of the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “Once Upon a Time” (5.6/ 8). Comparably, “Resurrection” was nine percent below the 5.3/ 8 for the year-ago season-premiere of former time period occupant “Revenge.”
Season four of “Revenge,” meanwhile, opened with a third-place 3.9/ 7 at 10 p.m., which 11 percent above the series-premiere of failed year-ago time period occupant “Betrayal” (3.5/ 6 on 9/29/13). Comparably, retention for “Revenge” out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “Resurrection” (4.7/ 7) was adequate at 83 percent.
Over at Fox, an estimated 30-minute primetime football overrun (16.1/28 at 7 p.m.) led into a 16.4/27 (#1) for post-game “The OT.” Mirroring CBS, the overnight results for Fox, which was up by double-digit percentages, are approximate due to football.
In season-premiere news, the longest running scripted series in the history of television, animated “The Simpsons,” kicked-off season 26 with a 5.5/ 8 (#3t) in the 8 p.m. half-hour. Compared to the year-ago season-opener (4.4/ 7 on 9/29/13), this is a rise of 25 percent. And it led into the second season premiere of relocated (and critically acclaimed) live action comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” at a 3.8/ 6 at 8:30 p.m. Comparably, this was 27 percent above “Bob’s Burgers” on the year-ago evening (3.0/ 5 on 9/29/13), with retention out of “The Simpsons” of 69 percent.
Next on Fox was the one-hour season-premiere of animated “Family Guy,” featuring the Griffins traveling to Springfield for a visit with the clan called Simpson, at a 5.4/ 8 from 9-10 p.m. (#3). Year-to-year, this was an increase of a hefty 59 percent in the overnights, which could translate into about a 4-rating among adults 18-49. Given the positive results, maybe the Simpsons could visit the Griffins next!

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

ReplyDeleteI wasn't expecting much of a rise for OUAT but that's still disappointing, it was a truly amazing premiere though so I don't see it going down much.
ReplyDeleteI didn't expect any big increase for Once but being up year to year is positive. That is a series low overnight rating for Resurrection. It never went below a 5.0 and never dropped from Once until now. And this is the final season for Revenge.

ReplyDeleteSomeone (can't remember who) said that CBS was apparently giving up on chance the younger crowds and would instead go for the older, wealthier, more educated crowds on Sundays, based on where MS was scheduled. This makes sense, since you can presumably make a lot of money doing that. But still, a 2.0 in the demo ain't terrible, and it looks to be helping TGW, so...

ReplyDeleteIsn't it owned by Disney? Given the number of holes ABC has in its schedule (though, possibly less this season) and the fact that it skews young as well as being owned by Disney, it should be fine.

ReplyDeleteThat's no that bad actually. If it can mantain a rating of 1.2 or higher, it should be fine.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it was somebody from CBS, Les Moonves or Nina Tassler perhaps? I can't remember having heard that statement, but I do remember that Tassler said a while back that Friday nights were more of a total viewers night than the demo. While this is of course Sunday and not Friday, CBS is still the most-watched network so they might go for total viewers on Sunday nights as well.
ReplyDeleteAnd a 2.0 isn't terrible indeed. Madam Secretary will likely have dropped to a 1.6 or a 1.7, but that's still not so bad. Like you said, it seems to be helping The Good Wife also. While its premiere was down in the demo, it actually had its biggest audience since January 22, 2012.
As someone who quit OUAT Frozen didn't make me interested again. Not even Elizabeth Mitchell or Giancarlo Esposito can make want to watch again. The show still has the same problems.
ReplyDeleteMarc made no mention of "granddaddy" CSI! This has to be a first. Anyone know how this compared to last year's Wednesday premier? I had low expectations because: 1) death slot/delays; 2) TGW v CM, which would you rather have as a lead-in! OUAT - good that it's steady - hope demo numbers are solid; MS - CBS will have to hope it is "upper-income" draw, like TGW, if so, they may be willing to sacrifice demos for higher end audience.
ReplyDeleteI think it's safe as long as it keeps a rating higher than 1.2. I know Nashville needs another season for syndication, but I can see the show hitting sub 1.0s this season. As long as they give a proper conclusion to Revenge, I'm fine with it ending this year.

Perspective - ABC knows very well how hard it can be to launch a 10pm show. They remember last year. 1.4 isn't great but they had multiple shows that's premiered to less than that last year.

WOW, Once really deserved this ratings. I hope it continues to be strong, and to hold over a 2.5 for the rest of the season (wishful thinking), but I smell a renewal for it. :)))))

ReplyDeleteno way it gets cancelled by then. It's a veteran show, and they are almost always allowed to run their entire season order. ABC may announce that this is the final season, but it won't pull the plug until it airs every episode

ReplyDeleteI disagree: ABC did promote it, but it should have started early with the promotion. From S2 to S3 they hit the jackpot showing Emily get shot on the first week of August. Promotion for Revenge started near September this time around, and though the promos looked good, there wasn't something really grabbing like Emily being shot. Maybe they could have done some other approach, but we can't say ABC didn't promote it. Their promotion was innefective, that's all

ReplyDeleteI gave up last season when in the midseason finale it got a 1.5 and then it came back to a 1.8 in January with no lead in. And it withstood the Golden Globes and Football. So, who knows? The show has a track of surprising, but this isn't a good sign. Let's pray for better ratings- they may happen

ReplyDeleteWe won't know for sure; last season Revenge held almost all of OUAT premiere (2.6 for OUAT, 2.3 for Revenge) so maybe it would have had better retention that Resurrection, but it's actually impossible to say; it may have bombed either way or not

ReplyDeleteIn another news, I am over the moon with how well B99 and OUAT did. OUAT is such a pleasant surprise. I was expecting it to beat last year's season premiere, but I didn't count on it getting back to the 3s in such a big way! So great!
Not an OUaT fan but... respect. For a show to reach a height it hasn't seen in nearly 2 years is damn impressive.
ReplyDeleteThat being said: all summer, we complained that ABC was focusing all of its promotion on TGIT and OUaT and ignoring everything else. Now look at the ratings. This just proves that if you promote and have a decent hook (like Frozen/Shonda), people WILL watch. Networks need to stop throwing their less-successful shows to the wolves because "yeah, it's doomed anyway".
Sad about Revenge. Its creative ups-and-downs notwithstanding, I have a soft spot for that show. Barring a miracle in the next few weeks, ABC should just announce this the final season and give Sunil Nayar and co. the time needed to write towards a kick-ass, satisfying finale.

ReplyDeleteRevenge is so done and over with. Stick a fork in it already. After s1, it's been heading downhills. David Clarke alive is a joke. And also the one thing Revenge creator and former showrunner did NOT want. Easy to understand why. I don't even like Emily anymore. And I am just plain allergic to Victoria and Daniel. S3 was my finale.
