-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Thursday 9/26/13:
ABC: +50, CBS: – 4, CW: -17, NBC: -24, Fox: -33

———-

Note: The following labels are based on the household overnights and are subject to change given the availability of other pending data streams. As always, these overnights are your first look at the ratings and a precursor to what could lie ahead. And we take into account additional benchmarks including the expected Live + Same Day demographic ratings, potential DVR usage, the critical acclaim (or lack of) and the social media presence.

———-

-Winners:
“Thursday Night Football” (CBS), “Grey’s Anatomy” (ABC), “Scandal” (ABC), “How To Get Away With Murder” (ABC)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
“The Biggest Loser” (NBC), “Parenthood” (NBC)

———-

-Ratings Breakdown:
The New York Giants vs. the Washington Redskins on “Thursday Night Football” led CBS to Thursday overnight victory, with an estimated 9.1 rating/15 share in the household overnights from 8:30-11:30 p.m. Comparably, this was 34 percent above the sluggish week-ago match-up between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Atlanta Falcons (6.8/12 on Sept. 18). And that translated (with coverage on the NFLN) to 11.88 million viewers and a 4.5 rating/16 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data. In other words, expect in the vicinity of 16-17 million viewers for last night’s match-up (which is still not the force “Sunday Night Football” is on NBC).

Earlier in the evening on the Eye net was the Football Kick-Off at a 5.3/10 (#2) in the 8 p.m. half-hour. As always, overnight results for any live sporting evening are always approximate.

Proof that more than one network entry can successfully co-exist in a time period was ABC’s drama line-up of “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and “How To Get Away With Murder.” Veteran “Grey’s Anatomy” opened season No. 11 (yes…time flies!), now in the Thursday 8 p.m. hour, with a very respectable 7.0/12 in households (#2) from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, that was six percent above its year-ago season-premiere (6.6/11 on 9/26/13 at 9 p.m.), which is particularly impressive given that “Grey’s” moved to 8 p.m. Next was the fourth season-premiere of “Scandal,” now in the Thursday 9 p.m. hour, at an 8.6/14, which built from the 8:30 p.m. portion of “Grey’s Anatomy” (7.1/11) by 21 percent and increased from its year-ago season-opener (7.9/14 on 10/03/13 at 10 p.m.) by nine percent.

In series-premiere news, ABC’s “How to Get Away With Murder” debuted at a dominant 9.7/16 in the overnights at 10 p.m., which increased from the second half of the two-hour year-ago “Grey’s Anatomy” season-opener (6.6/11) by a hefty 47 percent. And it grew from the 9:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “Scandal” (8.6/14) by 13 percent. Needless to say, Shonda Rhimes, the creator of all three ABC series, will be very pleased today.

To anyone wondering if Shonda Rhimes is the first producer to populate an entire evening in primetime, that honor actually goes to the legendary Aaron Spelling when ABC filled Saturday nights from 1982 to 1984 with “T.J. Hooker,” “The Love Boat” and “Fantasy Island;” and 1984 to 1985 with “T.J. Hooker,” “The Love Boat” and short-lived “Finder of Lost Loves.”

Elsewhere, the results were limited opposite football and the ABC dramas. Two more hours of “The Biggest Loser” on NBC scored a slim 2.9/ 5 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m., which was 12 percent below the already diluted 3.3/ 6 one week earlier (which translated into a 1.3/ 5 among adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data). And it led into the sixth – and final – season of drama “Parenthood” at a distant third-place 2.7/ 5 at 10 p.m., which was 18 percent below the already sluggish 3.3/ 6 season-premiere on the year-ago evening. Given that “Parenthood” has never attracted much interest in the traditional ratings, you have to give NBC credit for giving it a final season to wrap up all the storylines.

In more season-premiere news, veteran Fox drama “Bones” opened season 10 with a third-place 4.0/ 7 at 8 p.m., which was 20 percent below the 5.0/ 8 it opened with last season in the Monday 8 p.m. hour (on 9/06/13). Next on the troubled network was an encore telecast of the “Sleepy Hollow” season premiere at a sleepy (and fourth-place) 1.5/ 2 at 9 p.m.

The CW, which has ducked the competition this week with predominantly repeats, aired encores of “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals” each with a 0.5/ 1.

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Greys was up in a new time slot!!! (and its in the 11th season)
Scandal was up and so was HTGAWM
ABC JUST GOT THEIR BEST NIGHT
    TWO words: SHONDA RULES

    ReplyDelete
  2. Those ratings for HTGAWM are fantastic. Even Greys in an earlier timeslot.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Go shonda Rhimes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  4. Wow! Murder's going to be in the 4s for sure, pleasantly surprised!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Wow, wonderful ratings for the ABC shows

    ReplyDelete
  6. Wow this is great for ABC! HTGAWM premiered great!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Wow, great for TGIT line up, especially for HTGAWM.
Lol at The Biggest Loser in the losers category.

    ReplyDelete
  8. According to Sitcoms online, Scandal debuted to a 4.4 in the top25 markets and so did aHtgawm. Greys returned to a 3.2.

Is official: ABC rules Thurdays as of now.

    ReplyDelete
  9. OMG AMAZING.
I'm glad Shonda's Shows are doing so well! I love all of them and also the already cancelled one.

ABC should order more Shonda shows and make a Tuesday Shonda-Night besides the Thursday one haha

    ReplyDelete
  10. Now that's how you DOMINATE a NIGHT boy!!! Yes Shondaland rocked it!!!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Parenthood was great last night. . But being its the last season I guess the ratings don't matter much anymore. Still like to see it end on a high note

    ReplyDelete
  12. PER SITCOMS ONLINE

    #TGIT opens huge! Top 25 mkts1849 rtg #Greys 3.2 #Scandal 4.4 #HTGAWM 4.4.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Bones :( Hopefully it's not quite as bad as it looks.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yep, we already added those above the table.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Wow at TGIT!! I am particularly impressed by Grey's Anatomy! As usual, we need to see the demo numbers but this looks to be very very good. Crossing fingers the demo numbers don't disappoint!

And by the way, the last time I came online and saw this much positive reaction about a new drama was probably when The Blacklist premiered and even then I am not sure.

    ReplyDelete
  16. agree even in its 11th season its still delivers amazing ratings

    ReplyDelete
  17. Lady Grey may be old but she always delivers when it counts!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Shonda Rhimes is not the creator of HTGAWM, Marc needs to do his research.

    ReplyDelete
  19. It's rumored to be the last season, wonder if they'll announce it officially anytime soon or not.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Wonder how much it will drop when TBBT returns. Surely it will have some effect, despite GA being female skewing.

    ReplyDelete
  21. She is involved enough with it to not be "wrong" to say she is I think. Besides, I don't really blame Marc on this one. ABC and the entire media has been selling Murder as being from her the entire summer .And she doesn't deny it on interviews (I've seen videos), when people ask her how it is to have an entire lineup and stuff like that.

    ReplyDelete
  22. True, the creator is Peter Nowalk who was formerly with Scandal. But the show is a ShondaLand production and she is the executive producer.

    ReplyDelete
  23. not too much
I mean it faced football yesterday which does 4s and TBBT does 5s plus TBBT is only for a half-hour

    ReplyDelete
  24. Bones premiered to a 2.3 last year, so a 20% drop would put it around a 1.8-1.9, that would actually be amazing for FOX and for Bones considering how it ended the season. Bones stands a very good shot at being the highest rated show on FOX not airing on Sunday or Monday which would make it more valuable than ever for the sad network that FOX is now.

    ReplyDelete
  25. wow at how to get away with murder and scandal did not expect that.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well she is the producer so it is kinda her show, but the point is not the one who came up with the show.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Wow!
    Incredible numbers for ShondaLand Thursdays!!
All three shows were awesome last night too!

    ReplyDelete
  28. ABC got it right! It now owns Thursday nights!

Woah Scandal and Murder! Those are great numbers! 4.4 on early markets?! I predict 3.8-4.0 for both

    ReplyDelete
  29. NBC must be thinking really hard if they really want to put The Blaclist against Scandal with these kind of numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yeah true. It's not about her being the producer but its about the recognition that should go to Peter Nowalk

    ReplyDelete
  31. scandal will easily crush TBL (without the voice its usually in the mid 2s)

    ReplyDelete
  32. ABC's best night. Happy for all great numbers but I wanna see that demos to be sure. Loved HTGAWM and I'm excited for TGIT. I need it to be TGIT everyday. Also do we know if Murder is doing the limited run? I read somewhere over the summer that it was a possibility and if it is somewhat true think the ratings would and should change that

    ReplyDelete
  33. its gonna be 15-16 eps a season only

    ReplyDelete
  34. For some time, I've been amazed NBC hasn't been able to do better with trying to make this show work. It's basically been the only true family drama on the big networks, and it's been very well reviewed. I get they can't force people to watch it, but really, they could have done more--a marathon, perhaps. Instead, they keep if off the air for months on end. Oh well, maybe it will have a nice life in syndication.

    ReplyDelete
  35. They are doing a 16 episode because of Volia Davis's availability.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think Scandal is male skewing, so I hope it can co-exist with Scandal.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ok, what are your predictions for ABC now?
    Mine would be:
    Greys: 3.0
    Scandal: 4.1
    Murder: 4.2

    ReplyDelete
  38. Not necessarily. I can see both doing well, with CBS suffering.
But really, if Scandal does show a lot of strength, I can see NBC blinking and redoing the entire lineup. Not use in wasting a true hit when it could be better used elsewhere. Where, exactly, it would go isn't clear, but NBC can cross that bridge when it gets there.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think The Blacklist will be fine and it will keep NBC in the competitive loop, but it's going to be a firce battle, that's for sure

    ReplyDelete
  40. I loved that Grey's Anatomy actually did better than I thought considering the 8pm Thursday slot has been cursed for ABC since the end of Ugly Petty. What I'm even more impressed with is that Scandal's season 4 premiere hit a series high and that How to Get Away with Murder held very well after Scandal!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I watched Shondaland for the evening. All three shows were awesome. It sucks that FOX moved Bones over to Thursdays. That's a decision that makes no sense. I understand they put Gotham on Mondays but there's no way Bones can compete with TNF and the ABC shows.

    ReplyDelete
  42. It's more female than male skewing, it always has stronger female demos.
I think Blacklist and Scandal con co-exist, I mean TBBT, The Voice, DWTS and Gotham battled each other and all of them rated well, so I see no reason for either show to bomb; maybe they'll dip a little, but they are going to be fine

    ReplyDelete
  43. It'll be interesting to see if it gets a bump next week for the ... fallout episode. Fallout from the premiere's shock ending, that is.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Well Bones is already on it's last legs so makes perfect sense.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I did not know that TBL is more female skewing. That's kinda a surprise for me.

    ReplyDelete
  46. It makes perfect sense if they are planning for this to be its final season.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think it has two more seasons tops.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I meant Scandal xD. The Blacklist is male skewing

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yep, that's what I said in my original comment. So yep, I hope they'll be able to co-exist. Although I couldn't care less about Scandal since I don't watch it, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Bones ep last night... wow...

    ReplyDelete
  51. You just know that right now the ABC executives are likely putting together a massive thank you gift of sorts to Shonda.

    ReplyDelete
  52. It seems to have done somewhere along the ratings it did on Mondays after its season premiere last year, so that's a win for FOX considering its recent ratings, and it's probably the only show that can withstand the competition on Thursdays. It's a reliable player and it seems to be past the point in which it could be a hit- unless they kept it on Fridays where it was in fact a hit-, so I think it was actually a good choice

    ReplyDelete
  53. Oh, okay. Thanks for explaining. :) I hope that's the case because that'll make me feel better. Well, a little at least.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I hope ABC continues to give Grey's the promotion it deserves. Had they given them the correct promotion last season (especially for the milestone 200th ep) they may have seen better numbers but I'm glad a lot of us fans are still tuning in.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I think Marc wanted to save up words. These are Shonda shows, and that's shorter to say "The two shows that Shonda created plus the one she produced".

    ReplyDelete
  56. I like that Murder even grew from Scandal! I love and watch both shows, but that's kinda impressive

    ReplyDelete
  57. Did did a 4.3 last year on early markets too and ended up with a 3.6 so I am not sure if it has done enough to break a 4.0 this time.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Actually, it did a 4.2 last year but I see your point.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Agreed. It's a certain renewal for next season because: 1) it is a steady performer; 2) it can be slotted anywhere and does OK; 3) only true procedural on FOX; and 4) FOX, even with it's 15 hour schedule, has many, many trouble spots.

    ReplyDelete
  60. ABC: "Thank God We Have Shonda Night!"

    ReplyDelete
  61. I thought TBBT was already back on a new night. It comes on Monday nights now.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I was sure it did a 4.0 in early markets last year. I'll check it out, but if so I'll adjust my predictions a little

    ReplyDelete
  63. I agree with this. Grey's Anatomy is probably getting more promotion than it has seen since its 5th or 6th season. I am glad for the show.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Ahhh I see. Much like Kevin Bacon on The Following. Well I think a shorter season would benefit the story but not sure about ratings since its a longer wait.

    ReplyDelete
  65. http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/10/ratings-news-4th-october-2013-ratings.html

It says 4.3 here. Doesn't matter though. The finals should be in in half an hour or so, let's see!

    ReplyDelete
  66. We both found it at the same time xD. I already adjusted my predictions. Thanks for the heads up!

    ReplyDelete
  67. If BC continues the promotion for TGIT when next summer arrives, it should be fine in the second season.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I think the blacklist will be fine but I don't think they are on the same stratosphere ratings wise, at all, I don't think it will be such a close battle as people are predicting.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Yeah that's true and it did wonders for the premieres. Well I'm just sad since it;s gonna be such a long wait for me but oh well. Hopefully I won't go crazy if they have a major cliffhanger...

    ReplyDelete
  70. Very much so; didn't see it coming. ABC did a stellar job promoting the show. Now if they just had put as much effort in their others show- or even half the effort here- we'd be seeing stellar ratings all around

    ReplyDelete
  71. Thought it was 4.2. Oh well. Pray that it can break a 4!

    ReplyDelete
  72. I don't know, NBC was smart enough to give it exposure in the SB to make sure remember the show is coming back before premiering on Thursdays. Sure, SB didn't make any favors to New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine last year, but I think it will at least make the fans remember that their show is back and that is going to be on Thursdays 9PM. I think The Blacklist will be around mid 2s to low 3s, while Scandal will hover around low and mid 3s, so the ratings won't be that far away from each other

    ReplyDelete
  73. Bones is going to run for as long as FOX can keep it around; in the middle of the disaster state they are, Bones ratings are still decent and essentially a proof that they have more than one show to depend on right now- which would be Gotham... and to some extent Sleepy Hollow

    ReplyDelete
  74. One thing to bear in mind would be those 0.2 upwards adjustments that ABC has had since Sunday! A 3.9 would still give Scandal a very good shot at a 4.0 in finals. In any case, a series high in its 4th season for a highly serialized show is insane, regardless of whether or not it breaks a 4.0

    ReplyDelete
  75. Its 16 episodes. Secrets and Lies takes over when it's done for the Spring.

    ReplyDelete
  76. So far Scandal has defied ratings logic for a while.

    ReplyDelete
  77. A 3.8 is still great for HTGAWM, and it got 2m viewers more than Scandal.

    ReplyDelete
  78. New season high for Scandal at 3.8!

    ReplyDelete
  79. I'm on fire!
Spot on with Greys and Scandal! :D

    ReplyDelete
  80. u said 3.9 haha u have fail this city

    ReplyDelete
  81. Off by one tenth, still pretty close, plus possible adjust upwards

  86. ABC must be celebrating RN the dead sloth is finally alive and looking good with Grey's there! I dont watch Scandal but it always perform good and HTGAWM premere was awesome and the numbers show it.

  87. OMG. This is even better than I expected yesterday for all three ABC shows. I gotta say though, the one that still impresses me the most is good old GA, those are insane ratings for 8pm.

  88. Shonda won! Wow! Great rating for her!

  89. HTGAWM holds all of Scandal's premiere numbers and builds on it on viewers! Damn! ABC is on fire.

  90. Parenthood doing about as well as expected.

    Scandal on fire as usual.
Grey's defies the time slot curse.
and HTGAWM Does extremely well.(I wasn't sold on the pilot, I'm taking a wait and see approach.)

  91. ABC is probably sending champagne to Shonda's offices right now. That woman is their GOD

  92. Even though I no longer watch, good for GA debuting well in new slot. As we know, the season premier always gets higher than average ratings. If it maintains between 2.3-2.5 for season in the slot, it's a HUGE win for ABC. A bit odd that Scandal dropped almost 10% in demo at half-hours. Looks like Murder drew in additional audience not tied to Scandal - that's a very good thing for ABC.

  93. ABC must be ecstatic THU 8 p.m. isn't a problem anymore. They should have done this years ago. And on top of that, their top comedy and top drama have proven to be great lead-ins this season.

  94. Alongside a bucket full of money. I still can't b live this numbers!

    ReplyDelete
  95. I would bet that Scandal adjusts up, that is a very odd half hour drop there for a veteran show, I doubt it sticks in finals.

  96. wow ABC! amazing! not good for Bones, I expect similar numbers for Castle next Monday. (I wrote last year, this kind of shows doesn't work anymore, imo)

  97. This is awkward, but I'm feeling very proud. LOL
    Well done, Shonda!

  98. I always said they didn't do much for this show, they don't promote it, the put it in the Thursday 10 pm death slot. And yet it still holds its own. Its a great show, the writing the acting the whole thing. I'm just glad it got a 6th and finale season so the fans can get a real ending. And I'm sure this season will be one of the best they've had.

  99. Seems I was right after all. Scandal still manages to grow despite its age

  100. Proving that Scandal skews towards the female demo. As The Blacklist skews male, I think there is a chance they both can co-exist with good ratings

  101. Revenge would have probably scored low 2s at worst and probably mid 2s. Perfect lead in, very compatible and low competition. I always thought that was the right move. Besides, they could have premiered something else out of Resurrection on midseason!
Damn it ABC! If you just had done that!

    ReplyDelete
  102. A little bit later than when it needed to be done, but better later than ever, right?

    ReplyDelete
  103. BBT goes back to Thurs Oct 30

    ReplyDelete
  104. Agreed, Scandal/Revenge really seems to me like it would've been a perfect pairing. ABC screwed the hell up by moving Revenge to Sunday in the first place (it was a hit in Season 1 - if it ain't broke, don't fix it!) and they never bothered to course-correct.
This really bugs me about networks, they're only concerned by pretty, shiny new things. Once a show isn't a hit, they stop putting any effort into promotion and proper scheduling.

  105. Hot Damn! Quite pleased to see those numbers for HTGAWM :-)

    ReplyDelete
  106. You may be correct. My only concern is that every person I know that watches Bones, also watches Grey's. But I guess when DVR +7 numbers are added, it may be a wash.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Oh okay, Well I'm excited for Secrets and Lies so I guess I'll be fine. Damn I need the second ep of HTGAWM Nowwwww
