Ratings Breakdown:
On your mark, get set…go! CBS dominated this first night of the 2014-15 television season in the household overnights, inching past the home of “The Voice” and “The Blacklist,” NBC, by two-tenths of a rating point (or two percent). One year earlier, the Eye net opened third overall (behind ABC and NBC, which tied for No. 1). ABC and Fox were also on the map (despite less than stellar results for “Forever” and “Sleepy Hollow”) while The CW ducked with its combination of two encore episodes of “Whose Line is it Anyway?” (#5: avg. 0.6 rating/1 share from 8-9 p.m.) and the very tired “America’s Next Top Model” (#5: 0.9/ 1).
Tops in the 8-9 p.m. time period (and for the evening overall) were two episodes of “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS, with an 11.3/18 for the season-premiere at 8 p.m. and an 11.1/17 for a second episode at 8:30 p.m. Comparably, this was just seven percent below the 12.1/20 for the two-episode opener last season (on Thursday, 9/26/13). And those two episodes translated into 19.71 million viewers and a 5.8 rating/18 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data. Note to CBS: Smart move locking the actors in for the next three seasons.
With support of this magnitude (yes…lead-in still matters), the debut of CBS drama “Scorpion,” no doubt an unusual choice for the Monday 9 p.m. hour, was clearly sampled at a dominant 8.9/13 in the overnights from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, this was a hefty 55 percent above the year-ago “2 Broke Girls” (6.0/ 9 on 9/23/13) and Mom” (5.5/ 8) openers, and it led into a 5.0/ 8 (#3) for the season (or series) finale of summer drama Under the Dome” at 10 p.m. (5.0/ 8).
Proof there is room for more than one hit network show per time period was the season-premiere of singing competition “The Voice” on NBC, which resonated with an 8.5/13 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, that was just eight percent below the 9.2/14 year-ago season-opener (and that translated into 14.98 million viewers and a 5.1/13 among adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data).
At 10 p.m., NBC’s the season-premiere of sophomore “The Blacklist” led with ease at a 7.8/13, which was just two percent below the 8.0/13 series-opener on the year-ago evening. Let’s see what happens next week when relocated “NCIS: Los Angeles” on CBS steps into the time period and “Castle” on ABC returns.
Over at ABC, “Dancing With the Stars” is down, but not out with a 7.9/12 from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, that slipped by 16 percent from the 9.4/14 in the overnights on the year-ago evening and 17 percent from the week-ago season-premiere (9.5/15 on Sept. 15). And that 9.5/15 translated into 13.64 million viewers and a 2.4/ 7 among adults 18-49.
At 10 p.m. on ABC was the series premiere/preview of drama “Forever” at a second-place 5.2/ 9, which was a hefty 30 percent below the season-premiere of year-ago time period occupant “Castle” (7.4/12 on 9/23/13). And retention for “Forever,” which opens in its regularly scheduled Tuesday 10 p.m. hour tonight, was only 65 percent out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “Dancing With the Stars” (8.0/12). Rule of thumb: Most new shows drop in the vicinity of 10 to 20 percent in week two.
Given the hype for new drama “Gotham” on Fox, you might have assumed it would have opened stronger than a 5.7/ 9 in the household overnights at 8 p.m. (which finished fourth in the hour). But the strength of “Gotham,” which falls within the young adult demos, is definitely expected to resonate. Its social media presence is already huge. And this 5.7 rating was 19 percent above year-ago occupant “Bones” (4.8/ 7 on 9/23/13). Consider this a positive (albeit non-spectacular) start for “Gotham” in the overnights.
“Gotham” lead-out “Sleepy Hollow,” however, was very disappointing with the second season-opener at a 3.8/ 6 at 9 p.m. (#4), which was 33 percent below the 5.7/ 8 on the year-ago evening. And that 5.7 translated into 8.59 million viewers and a 3.1/ 8 in adults 18-49 (based on the Live + Same Day data). Comparably, retention for “Sleepy Hollow” out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of “Gotham” (5.7/ 9) was sluggish at 67 percent.
And there you have it…night one of the new TV season!

Oh I've missed this.
ReplyDeleteGreat for Scorpion, TBBT and The Blacklist.
ReplyDeleteWill wait for demos for the other three dramas.
I know right? It will be fun translating these numbers to the actual demos :)
ReplyDeleteGotham did decent considering what it was up against. Shame about Sleepy Hollow being down quite a bit.
ReplyDeleteVery good for The Blacklist and TBBT.
ReplyDeleteI think CBS and NBC clearly did very well and it also seems safe to assume that Forever didn't (since its strength would be on the old skew anyway). However, I will reserve judgment on FOX until actual numbers; as the youngest skewing network, those are particularly relevant there.
ReplyDeletePreliminary speaking, I am extremely impressed that the blacklist came back that strong.
CBS would have had a stronger night if they would have ended failure Under the Dome last week and premiere NCIS: LA last night.
ReplyDeleteOUCH at Sleepy Hollow lol.
That has to be a series low for a Monday edition of DWTS.
Great for The Blacklist, The Voice and TBBT. Good for Gotham as well, because the competition last night was rough. I think we'll have to wait to see where Gotham will go because in 3 weeks there will be no more TBBT on Mondays.
ReplyDelete5 weeks.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the correct information!!!!
ReplyDeleteWill we get early top 25 18-49 demos again like the start of last season? Great return for The Blacklist!
ReplyDeleteYeah....Let the battles begin!!!!
ReplyDeletewhere is TBBT going ????
ReplyDeleteBack to Thursday
ReplyDeleteBack to Thursday.
ReplyDeleteughhh the voice is back
ReplyDeleteBack to Thursday on October 39th.
ReplyDeleteNot looking good for Sleep Hallow or Forever
ReplyDeleteThis looks like one of the lower Voice premieres (in at least total viewers)
The Blacklist did good but will have more competition next week
Gotham did ok, not great and will fall in the coming weeks (FOX is in for a rough season)
And we're back! I've really missed this!
ReplyDeleteThe Blacklist will still have great ratings throughout but Castle's season premiere ratings may be better than expected due to the cliffhanger from May.
ReplyDeleteI honestly don't think nbc should be moving the blacklist ( I cant see anything performing as well in that slot)
ReplyDeleteAre you sure? That date doesn't exist!
ReplyDeleteIts 29th LOL he just mis-typed it
ReplyDeleteEarly markets - Gotham = high 3s. Scorpion and Blacklist = mid 3s.
ReplyDeleteAll good but no breakout hits
ReplyDeleteyou cant declare a show a breakout hit after one episode.
ReplyDeleteI'm really sad for Sleepy Hollow. The show is so good, it deserved way better. As much as I like Forever I don't think it will be competition against the shows it goes up against (not on Monday and not on its real night Tuesday). It's a shame the idea was interesting and the cast pretty good.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad for The Blacklist but its competition wasn't on last night so we'll only know next week how well it will really do.
I'm not sure yet about Gotham and Monday nights. Like others said we need to see how it will fare once TBBT is back on Thursday...
What about TBBT?
ReplyDeleteAre those actual A18-49 or your estimates? Scorpion seems rather high given drama skews older on CBS generally...
ReplyDeleteAw,come on Sleepy Hollow!
ReplyDeleteGood to see The Blacklist just as strong as last years premiere,or almost as.
I watched the best lineup yesterday of Gotham, Scorpion and then Blacklist! It was amazing! Amazing for The Voice and TBBT only being down a few percent from their last premieres, especially considering they were going up against each other. Great for The Blacklist being as high as last year, guess all the promotion and Netflix paid off. Sucks for Sleepy Hollow and Forever!
ReplyDeleteHigh 5s.
ReplyDeleteActual early market numbers.
ReplyDeletewhere?
ReplyDeleteI think these are Top 25 markets ratings.
ReplyDeleteSeriously? Wow that's amazing!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeletewhy don't you post the actual rating?
ReplyDeleteThe Blacklist did good like usual and Gotham did fine with the viewers. Good demo helps Gotham
ReplyDeleteAt this point low 2s is s mega hit for FOX, even if it drops off big time from a higher lead in
ReplyDeleteSane here, I thought Blacklist would cone back strong, but not that much!
ReplyDeleteConsidering Sleepy Hollow did a 3.1 with thise numbers last year Gotham could easily be over 3
ReplyDeleteI think Ivy will end up in an orphanage. I assume Gordon will feel responsible for her in some way. But she'll probably feature the least of all the big characters we've seen so far.
ReplyDeleteYeah i had a feeling. Too bad shes one of my favorite bat villains..
ReplyDeleteSo most of the villains in Gotham have some 30+ years on Batman? That makes it even less credible that they'd escape him time and time again.
ReplyDeleteSleepy Hollow:( was hoping for more...
ReplyDeleteActual Premiere Ratings
ReplyDeleteGotham-3.2 and 8 mill. viewers
Scorpion-3.3 and 14 mill. viewers
Sleepy Hollow-2.0 and 5 mill. viewers
The Blacklist-3.4 and 12 mill. viewers
TBBT-5.4 and 17 mill. viewers
Forever-1.5 and 8 mill. viewers
UTD-1.8 and 7 mill. viewers
Great Number for Gotham and Scorpion!!! Really enjoyed the pilots! Also lol TBBT is a hit no matter what night it's on! Sad for sleep hollow! Needs to get bigger! Also yay for The Blacklist!!! Came back strong
ReplyDeletePenguin, Riddler, Catwoman and Ivy are definitely not 30+ years older than Bruce Wayne here.
ReplyDeleteI really really loved Scorpion! I hope it gets renewed, and then renewed again and again! This will be my first procedural, I hope it isn't cancelled :P
ReplyDeleteNot surprised Gotham and The Blacklist got excellent ratings! But I'm absolutely shocked Sleepy Hollow returned so low. What happened?! :(
ReplyDeleteFOX must be jumping for joy with these numbers for Gotham! If these numbers keep up for The Blacklist then a 3rd season is all but assured!
ReplyDeleteHopefully Gotham and Scorpion don't decline too much. Overall great night of TV I might say, with the exception of ABC lol.
ReplyDeleteToo long a hiatus.
ReplyDeleteSleepy Hollow bombed in its return with a series low!
ReplyDeleteGood start for TBBT, Gotham and The Blackilst!
ReplyDeleteAt least Sleepy Hollow is over 2s, but it is still disappointing considering its lead in, but the competition was brutal so... it's fine, besides its way up from everything else on FOX
For FOX standards it's still good
ReplyDeleteThankfully they up the episode order from 13 to 18. Just hoping it builds up or at least stays consistent. Gotham and Sleepy are just not compatible
ReplyDeleteI'd say Bruce is about 10-12 here, Penguin and Riddler would probably be 25-30 so it's not that implausable. Penguin could actually probably be older given how old he usually looks in comics.
ReplyDeleteHere are the 1/2 hr Breakdowns

Jesus, that's a bit of a jolt up for Under the Dome. Great for Scorpion, Blacklist and Gotham.
ReplyDeletePretty sharp drop for The Voice vs. last fall (3.9 vs. 5.1) but not out yet!
ReplyDeleteAwesome start for Scorpion(3.3), I so hope it doesn't fall too much.
ReplyDeleteHuge drop for blacklist in 1/2 hrs
ReplyDeleteWow dwts still in the 2s not bad
I think people are just tired with reality in general
ReplyDeleteThe Blacklist was inflated by The Voice thats why it dropped so much. It had a one minute overrun.
ReplyDeleteI was almost spot on with my Voice prediction! Off by one tenth. Low, but understandable considering the TBBT and Gotham competition.
ReplyDeleteThe retention from The Blacklist is outstanding! NBC must be very happy.
My take:
ReplyDeleteBiggest Winner: The Blacklist, by far far far
Did very well: The Big Bang Theory, Scorpion, Gotham
Very underwhelming: The Voice, Dancing with the Stars, Sleepy Hollow
Biggest Looser: Forever
I am shocked at the blacklist, I did not think it would come back this strong. NBC will be thrilled.
ReplyDeleteThe Voice shoot up in the ratings when TBBT didn't air, so maybe it'll perform better once it moves. And yeah, The Blacklist holding on to The Voice rating like this? It's a big win
ReplyDeleteRed Reddinton Rules!
ReplyDeleteI think it's the big bang theory. It went to the 4s in the second hour but the first hour was very limited due to big bang.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see The Blacklist vs Scandal !
ReplyDeleteIt was doing great last year either
ReplyDeleteIt already peaked
Wow Castle 2.0--- I mean, Forever did a fresh start, I see LOL
ReplyDeleteAwesome for The Blacklist, highest rating since the pilot.
ReplyDeleteGreat for TBBT as always.
Gotham did pretty well. I always did say people predicting 4+ were being waaay to optimistic.
Forever is DOA. Could very well be the first cancellation.
No that bad for Forever, I still think has chances, pilot was available for a month already so I for once skipped it, it was also trending on twitter last night people were positive about it and the FB page is growing....good word of mouth will do good for this show. Might not be for the likes of many but it has enough following already.....
ReplyDeleteStrong start for Gotham, looks like the hype did its work. Now the real test begins - how many viewers will it bleed in the next few weeks? I guess it's encouraging that this *is* Fox, meaning it has a loooooooong way to drop before it gets near the danger zone...
ReplyDeleteMy only hope for Sleepy Hollow is that it remains steady: if it holds at 2s or high 1s that's enough for me, I just hope it doesn't free fall. Next week competition will be a little easier (since it's week 2), so I hope it can remain around those numbers, though I wish for higher if possible
ReplyDeleteThe Pilot was out there for a month in different platforms, I skipped last night's, and as me many missed it because of that. But it has a lot of good word of mouth today is the big test, since Tuesday is their actual airing night....we will see!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI think it can remain over 2s; the reaction of the viewers are fairly positive, and nothing like SHIELD last year which got a lot of negative comments coming from the viewers
ReplyDeleteI never buy the "pilot was already available" excuse.
ReplyDeleteWhere are the half hours?
ReplyDeleteBahaha, I meant 30th.
ReplyDeleteWell it happened to me I already watched it, why would I watch it again. Unfortunately I don't have a Nielsen box so I just DVR it but again, I do buy the power of a networking fandom, good word of mouth & DVR. As I said its too soon to DOA it. ;)
ReplyDeletescroll down the page. DarkUFO has them posted below.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree with that. It should get better the next few weeks (even starting next week since TBBT will be half an hour only)
ReplyDeleteIf it does just as badly tonight in its normal slot v POI and Chicago Fire, then I'll agree with you that Forever is DOA.
ReplyDeleteA 2.0 for Sleepy Hollow week 1 is fine, don't forget the show has been off air longer then pretty much everything else in that lineup. You also will have people check out Scorpion this week because its a new show then come back to SH. Im not worried about it as long as it remains steady
ReplyDeleteForever is possibly DOA, but I don't know, it will still have SHIELD as lead in, which is not bad, so I'll wait and see tomorrow ratings. If it underperforms, it's DOA, but if it does mid 1s, it's safe considerin Tuesdays 10PM woes
ReplyDeleteOne of the main issues with last night's episode of Forever is that ABC almost didn't promote it focusing most of the attention on tonight's episode, plus last night's episode was labelled as a "preview" and we all know fewer people bother with previews.
ReplyDeleteForever did bad, but almost on par with OUATIW's numbers last year (and Forever aired at 10, not 8) so I think ABC won't cancel it that quick. It's nowhere near as bad as Lucky 7, so I think that if it manages to stay above (or around) 1s ABC will at least air the first 13 episodes.
I hope it does well tonight as I actually enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteDitto! I think the timeslot and the pilot been out there for a month already. Today will be the real test....
ReplyDeleteThe actor is actually 13.....
ReplyDeleteI'm still yet to watch it (or anything, for that matter). It's up against POI so as long as it gets lesser ratings than POI...
ReplyDeleteThat's what I think; besides it's on FOX, where most of their shows have been doing terrible, so a 2.0 is actually a sight for sore eyes
ReplyDeletePOI will get better ratings for sure. The only thing I have seen today is Gotham , still haven't watched Sleepy Hollow , TBBT or Scorpion.
ReplyDeleteWhile that is true, the problem is that everytime a show premieres to disapointing expectations people go the route of "if it manages to keep this rating or close it will still be fine", but the truth is that seldom ever happens. If SH really does keep itself at 90% of FOX's drama slate, then for sure it will be fine, but that's not such a likely event IMO, especially because its lead-in is certain to give in some ground as well.
ReplyDeleteI've learned that online buzz can often be very deceiving but yes, I agree with you that the reaction seems to be fairly different.
ReplyDeleteI actually believe that if Scorpion gives a bit, the numbers will go up, SHIELD is a great example, once it fell a ton it held 1.9-2.1 for at least half a season if not more
ReplyDeleteI know shows tends to dip over the following weeks, but I think Sleepy Hollow will be fine; I'd love if it kept the 2s, but it will probably take a Following rout from here, but even if it does it's more than enough for FOX right now
ReplyDeleteHuge drop for Sleepy Hollow and The Blacklist
ReplyDeleteIndeed. All the previous examples show that the pre-aired episodes never hurt the actual viewing, at least not on the measurable level.
ReplyDeleteDOA maybe too soon, but regarding the short posts about the second episode's screener, even those ones who loved the pilot called it a "snoozefest", so I don't have high hopes that they will be able to keep (mainly not to raise) the pilot's audience for the next week.
It's very uncommon for highly serialized veteran shows to inch up post premiere. It's possible but I doubt it. Sure, competition might slow down but lead-in should also slow down, as should hype. We shall see. I hope for the best for the show!
ReplyDeleteIMHO the PoI/CF duo is at least as dangerous to Forever than Blacklist was. PoI has a huge total audience (though relatively low rating), CF has a large audience and at least as high rating as PoI has. Together they are at least as big slice of the pie as the Blacklist/Dome duo was.
ReplyDeleteI think POI is gonna start to ramp it up a bit with the demos this year, or at least I hope it does. But yeah, POI and CF are quite dangerous to Forever.
ReplyDeleteQuite the numbers. I'm not surprised Voice took the biggest hit here, cause people can always rewatch it and switch in nect week when they give up on one of theses shows.
ReplyDeleteGlad Scorpion did solid, will be interesting to see how it'll perform out of Mom next week.
The big thing will be see Gotham perform when The Originals come back. I know it isn't really the same target but again could see some interesting numbers.
Blacklist - whoa, increasing the rating by 0.8 from the finale, that's something you need to bow before.
ReplyDeleteGotham - happy with the strong start, we will see how much they can keep from it.
Scorpion - well, I don't need to like all the popular shows...
Sleepy Hollow - hoped for a better season start, it's not very promising. Can be explained, but a good rating beats the best explanations on any day.
Forever - surprisingly low. Very positive previews, below mediocre premiere numbers. It brings up two questions: A) how will it fare today and mainly on next Tuesday? there are no error margin below these numbers. B) how will Castle fare next Monday? No matter how upset the fandom had been, it is a fandom. (Bones did the same in S5, yet the S6 premiere didn't suffer.) Yet, you can poke the fans only to a limit.
That's not good for Sleepy Hollow, but I will say this: the season premiere wasn't that great to begin with. I think Sleepy Hollow's premiere is something I expected to be really great since I love its pilot and last season finale.
ReplyDeleteBut, that does sound pretty good for Gotham. Hopefully the ratings even rise next week.
Let the fun begins! The Blacklist had a great premiere! o/ . TBBT on it's new night did awesome i wasnt expecting such numbers. mondays have become a tough night
ReplyDeleteNumbers never reflect the actual quality (more precisely, "likeability") of a given episode. Those reflect how good or likeable people expect it to be.
ReplyDelete"I think POI is gonna start to ramp it up a bit with the demos this year, or at least I hope it does."
ReplyDeleteCount me in! :)
It's even more thrilling because Voice was much weaker than a year ago, so it can't be said now that these high numbers are just because of the strong lead-in.
ReplyDeleteI actually pressed 9 instead of 0.
ReplyDeleteYou mean the +7 DVR? Yep.
ReplyDeleteI understand this, and my point was simply stating that anyone who passed on Sleepy Hollow even after watching the first fifteen or so minutes, I wouldn't blame them.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen it yet, but if this is the case, it's not a good news.
ReplyDeleteHa! Called Scorpion coming out of the screening at SDCC!
ReplyDeleteBut is it good for Sleepy Hollow standards?
ReplyDeletewell BBT skews younger than 60 Minutes.
ReplyDeleteIt is disappointing? Sure.
ReplyDeleteIs it bad? No.
Is it good for FOX standars? Yes.
I also expected Sleepy Hollow to do better, but it could have been much worse actually
These premiere numbers can be misleading for sure, but at a glance I'd say Blacklist and Scorpion did as well as expected or better.... Sleepy Hollow and Gotham were down from what I expected both in ratings and quality frankly.
ReplyDeleteReally hard to get a good idea of how Forever will do seeing as the pilot has been available for weeks now. Next two weeks will really provide a better idea of how the shows are faring.
Also the drop was quite big for Sleepy Hollow in the half-hours. Yeah FOX might still consider it good rating wise. But this is just the premiere and shows usually don't stay at the level of their premiere ratings.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed that Blacklist stays up!
ReplyDeleteFrom 2.2 to 1.8? That's not a big drop in the half hours. I've seen much, much worse
ReplyDeleteAlso being up against the final season of Sons of Anarchy which is cable ratings monster doesn't bode well for Forever
ReplyDeleteI agree about TO
ReplyDeleteWith Forever being up against not only Person of Interest but also the final season of Sons of Anarchy I'm expecting it to bomb pretty quickly. That's too tough of competition.
ReplyDeleteAh yes, forgot about that.
ReplyDeleteI'm not at all surprised by Forever. It's a good show I knew wouldn't be given much of a chance. But I'll enjoy it while it lasts.
ReplyDeleteNot all that surprised by Sleepy Hollow either. I love the show but saw it dropping. Fox needs to realize they're going down. 5 million is good for their channel now.
Well, I certainly don't want to speak for everyone, but just in my opinion, someone who loved the pilot episode and last season's finale…I didn't think the season premiere was all that great. While Gotham's pilot was sluggish in the beginning but sped up, I felt Sleepy Hollow's season premiere felt sluggish from beginning to end, but then so did some episodes during their first season, too. Sometimes this show has already felt as if some of their episodes is only for explaining this or explaining that and not really showing anything worthwhile.
ReplyDeleteI'm overly anxious now to find out DVR ratings for Sleepy Hollow, hopefully it's good news. :/ The premiere was probably my favorite episode yet.
ReplyDeleteMonday seems like a very competitive night so far. I wonder how Castle and NCIS LA will make it even tougher.
ReplyDeleteIt really is a death slot on the schedule....
ReplyDeleteAww sleepy hollow;(. I rly like the show. I know the ratings more or less fell last season. They kind of were stable in low 2's I think, but it did start out much stronger, yet I figured it gathered a good fan love, decent ratings, and good promotion.
ReplyDeleteI expected much more. Not completely phenomenal, but just a little bit higher ratings. Anyone have an idea what might have caused it? Bad time slot? High competition? ???
but from Sleepy Hollow?
ReplyDeleteWow what a ratings spread at the 8pm hour. I knew that was going to be a crazy hour with The Voice and TBBT battling it out. I really feel sorry for Gotham being where it is. I'm glad it got a 3.2. I really want it to succeed and become a hit, but I wasn't sure what its ratings were going to be airing against those 2 monsters. I didn't know a ratings spread of like that was even possible. For DWTS to still pull out a 2.0 is pretty good considering what it was up against. I'm glad there's enough ratings room for 3 (and kind of 4) shows to air in the same hour with good ratings. Once TBBT moves back to Thursdays after Halloween, Gotham will undoubtedly be the primary benefactor of that. I'm also really hoping Scorpion will make it. Good start for everyone involved.
