Note: The following labels are based on the household overnights and are subject to change given the availability of other pending data streams. The overnights, of course, are your first look at what to potentially expect when the other results come in. And we always take into account other benchmarks including the expected demographic ratings, potential DVR usage, the critical acclaim (or lack of) and the social media presence.

-Winners:
“Sunday Night Football” (NBC), “60 Minutes” (CBS), “Madam Secretary” (CBS)

-Honorable Mention:
“The Good Wife” (CBS)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
Nothing – ABC and Fox aired all repeats.

Ratings Breakdown:
Ignited by an approximate 64-minute primetime football overrun on the East Coast, CBS closed the 2013-14 TV season on a winning overnight note, besting the home of “Sunday Night Football” – NBC – by an estimated 38 percent in households. Football on CBS in the 7 p.m. hour scored a hefty 19.4 rating/34 share, and it led into the late start for the season-premiere of granddaddy “60 Minutes” at an approximate (and dominant) 12.6/20 from 8-9 p.m. We stress approximate because the first four minutes of the 8 p.m. hour was populated with football.

In series-premiere news, CBS drama “Madam Secretary,” starring Tea Leoni, was adequately sampled at an estimated second-place 10.3/16 in the 9 p.m. hour (which included the final four minutes of “60 Minutes”). While the initial audience base for “Madam Secretary” will be very respectable (hence the label of “winner”), the audience skew for the show is expected to be older. Next on the Eye net was the sixth season-premiere of critically acclaimed “The Good Wife” at an also estimated (and also second-place) 8.2/14 from 10-11 p.m. (which included the final four minutes of “Madam Secreatary”).

On NBC’s “Sunday Night Football,” the match-up was the Pittsburgh Steelers at the Carolina Panthers, and the overnight performance was an approximate 12.3/20 from 8:30-11:30 p.m. Results for all live sporting events are, of course, estimated. Earlier in the evening on NBC was pre-game “Football Night in America” at a 1.5/ 3 (#4) at 7 p.m., a 1.6/ 3 at 7:30 p.m., and a 7.5/12 (#2) in the 8 p.m. half-hour.

Elsewhere, Fox’s distant No. 3 finish was a result of repeats of animated “Bob’s Burgers” (#3t, 1.5/ 3), two episodes of “The Simpsons” (#3, avg. 2.0/ 3) and two episodes of “Family Guy” (#3: 2.0/ 3) from 7-9:30 p.m., and the final original episode of “American Dad” (#3: 2.0/ 3 at 9:30 p.m.) on the network. “American Dad” will continue on TBS, with 15 new episodes ordered for 2015.

Last was ABC’s repeat rotation of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” (#3: 2.6/ 4) and dramas “Once Upon a Time” (#4: 1.6/ 2), “Resurrection” (#4: 1.5/ 2) and “Revenge” (#3: 1.6/ 3).

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). 1. And we're baaaack!

No way of making anything out of these because MS is expected to skew very old so I don't know how this will translate into an actual demo.

  2. Will wait for the demos as always, but it doesn't seem too bad for Madam Secretary just yet. At least it doesn't seem to premiere DOA.

Very good start for Madame S.
Nice sampling for TGW S6 premiere.
Anyway ... let's see the final demos later.

  4. The Good Wife did well in total viewers, and correct me if I am completely off the mark but doesn't an 8.2 HH rating roughly translate as about 11-12 million viewers???
And I'm hoping for somewhere in or around a 1.5-1.8 even a 2.0 (but that could be a long shot), if those HH ratings look right.

  5. Not necessarily a bad thing, if the audience is wealthy and educated. Sure, younger won't hurt, but if it can't get that, older but wealthy and educated is a nice alternative.

  6. Looking pretty strong for Madam Secretary, but we have to wait and see the demos. I expect something over 2s, which would be a good start. If the demo is even higher, all the better

    ReplyDelete
  7. It seems Madam Secretary did well.....so far.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Unless 60 Minutes did >3.5 I would be kind of shocked with Madam doing more than a 2.0. I was expecting mid to high 1s. We shall see.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I was the same, but after seeing these high households rating, they can't be all over 50, right? Well, they could, but I expect a 1.9 at this point.
    We shall see

    ReplyDelete
  10. What do you consider 'so old'?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I was right in the money! 1.9!

    ReplyDelete
  12. 1.9 you got ;) Though 60 Minutes had an overrun so it might adjust in finals!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Madam Secretary looks good even though it skewed old. Let's see how it holds up next week, and let's hope there are no downwars adjustments.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I guess between 20 and 30... LOL

    ReplyDelete
  15. he he he, I was right in the money...! For now anyway xD

  16. urgh... I predicted MS to be the first show to get cancelled........ double urgh.

  18. It's a bit sad to see that animation rerus do almost the same as FOX regular episodes. They'll be missing American Dad, I don't really think Mulaney can hold off Family Guy's audience

    ReplyDelete
  19. The Good Wife did worse than I thought. It should have been able to premiere at least to a 1.5 IMO, since it had no other drama competition apart from Ray Donovan and that its lead-in wasn't even that weak. It should only get worse from here, competition and lead-in wise.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Well, at least the show makes lots of money on syndication, so even with the terrible numbers it is not likely to get the axe right away

    ReplyDelete
  21. True but I do believe if and when it gets renewed for season 7, it will be the final season as the producers have planned it

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yeah, I think so too. No need to drag it beyond that, even more so considering the producers want to end it in season 7 and it's no rating juggernaut

    ReplyDelete
  23. Knowing they Madame Secretary didn't DOA, I'll be able to watch the pilot later with some peace of mind if ever I end up liking it.

    ReplyDelete
  24. That's pretty damn good for Madam Secretary.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Surprised that the good wife premiered so low but what can u expect from a show on its 6th season

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh I agree. I think the show will get its seventh final season unless it goes into unsustainable territory. I wouldn't be surprised to see it being a short one though a la The Mentalist this year. We shall see. Lots of variables yet to be known.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Due to the nature of live sports coverage, ratings for CBS & NBC (NFL Football) are preliminary and likely to change in the final ratings. Due to the NFL overrun, CBS' primetime lineup was delayed in the Eastern and Central Time Zones, with 60 Minutes starting at 8:04, Madam Secretary at 9:04 and The Good Wife at 10:04. Ratings for CBS are tentative and likely to change in the final ratings.

  28. I went with Laura but the preview after AGT left me dubious (although those really aren't worth much). Maybe ABC will bite first with MHS after all.

    To me it's beween:
    - The Mysteries of Laura
    - Madam Secretary
    - Manhattan Love Story
    - Forever
    - Red Band Society (I don't really think so but well)

    ReplyDelete
  29. A lot of people are hating on Black-ish because of its name.. but with Modern Family as lead-in....
Forgot that Madam Secretary was after 60 minutes. I guess it'll be lower next week.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Madam Secretary has now been updated to a 2.0 according to Deadline and TVbytheNumbers. Official final ratings will come in later.

    ReplyDelete
  31. American Dad starts on TBS in October not in 2015. Marc with another mistake. His first one this season.
