———-

Note: The following labels are based on the household overnights and are subject to change given the availability of other pending data streams. As always, these overnights are your first look at the ratings and a precursor to what could lie ahead. And we take into account other benchmarks including the expected demographic ratings, potential DVR usage, the critical acclaim (or lack of) and the social media presence.

———-

-Winners:
“America’s Got Talent” (NBC), “Big Brother” (CBS), “The Mysteries of Laura” (NBC)

-Disappointing Initial Sampling:
“Red Band Society” (Fox)

-Summer Fizzle:
“Extant” (CBS)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
Nothing…we are giving “Red Band Society” the benefit of the doubt until we see the demos, the DVR usage and the Twitter tallies.

Ratings Breakdown:
Led by the live two-hour season-finale of summer favorite “America’s Got Talent,” it was an easy midweek overnight victory for NBC. “America’s Got Talent” concluded with a 7.9 rating/13 share in households from 8-10 p.m., which was 11 percent above the 7.1/12 for the year-ago season-ender (on 9/18/13), which translated into 11.49 million viewers and a 2.3 rating/7 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data.

Lifted, no doubt, by the hefty lead-in support, NBC drama “The Mysteries of Laura,” headlined by Emmy winner Debra Messing, previewed with a dominant 6.6/12 at 10 p.m. (by half-hour: 7.1/12 – 6.1/11). Comparably, “The Mysteries of Laura” outdelivered the season (or series) finale of competing CBS drama “Extant” (#2: 3.7/ 6) by 78 percent. And retention for “The Mysteries of Laura” out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “America’s Got Talent” (8.6/14) was adequate at 77 percent.

While “The Mysteries of Laura” was clearly sampled (and congratulations to NBC for the wise programming maneuver), debuting as the Wednesday 8 p.m. anchor next week (opposite the season-premiere episodes of “Survivor” on CBS, and “The Middle” and “The Goldbergs” on ABC) will be no easy task. Translation: Expect considerable erosion from the protected preview (but hope for an improvement from year-ago occupant “Revolution”).

The other new series premiere last night was Fox drama “Red Band Society,” which is difficult to judge without examining the young adult demos. “Red Band Society,” headlined by Oscar winner Octavia Spencer, opened with a quiet 2.9/ 5 in the household overnights (#3) at 9 p.m. While a third-place time period finish is nothing to boast about, the immediate positive was full retention out of lead-in “Hell’s Kitchen.” But “Hell’s Kitchen” last Wednesday (with a 3.2/ 5 in the overnights) translated into only a 1.5/ 5 among adults 18-49 (based on the Live + Same Day data). The year-ago time period occupant – “The X Factor” – was much stronger at a 5.0/ 8 in the hour. And the highly promoted “Red Band Society” did face encore telecasts of “Criminal Minds” on CBS (#2: 3.3/ 8) and “Modern Family” on ABC (two episodes: avg. #3, 2.9/ 5).

Since most new series drop in the vicinity of 10 to 20 percent in week two (and the competition will be all original next week), consider the debut of “Red Band Society” a definite disappointment.

Earlier in the evening was “Big Brother” on CBS at a consistent 4.3/ 7 (#2) from 8-9 p.m., which will likely translate into about a 2.3 rating among adults 18-49, and encores of “The Middle” (#4: 2.8/ 5) and “The Goldbergs” (#4; 2.4/ 4) on ABC at typical non-original levels. ABC capped off the night with a repeat of drama “Nashville,” which did not necessarily deserve its third season renewal, at a 1.6/ 3 (#3) at 10 p.m.

Elsewhere, “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” on The CW (#5: 1.2/ 2 at 8 p.m.) led into a 0.5/ 1 (#5) for a repeat of drama “The 100” at 9 p.m. Week-to-week, “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” slipped by 14 percent (versus a 1.4/ 2 on Sept. 10).

  1. I'm surprised Laura did so well, but again people miss the simple family dramas and that could be a thing for the show. I read people didn't hated it to much as predicted so it could hold steady.

  2. Noo :( i wanted great ratings for Red Band Society and bad ratings for Laura. But in reality exact opposite happend :(

Let's wait and see the demo for RBS ...

    ReplyDelete
  4. I hope both Red Band and Laura did well in viewers and demo for their premieres and I hope both do well in the coming weeks. People really loved both shows on Twitter, especially Red Band Society as it's still trending right now. I can't wait for premiere week!

    ReplyDelete
  5. I think TMoL will have a huge drop next week. Will wait for demos for RBS but it doesn't look good.

    ReplyDelete
  6. AGT finale as a lead-in helped. For all we know, it could have skewed really old, though.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Didn't know it had that Talent as a lead in, that surely helped. But they are fairly compatible in the target audience, at least I think.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I'm expecting a drop à la Intelligence.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Le sigh on Red Band Society...

    ReplyDelete
  10. If RBS pulls a New Girl- little viewership but good demos- it will be fine, but I surely thought it would draw more of an audience overall considering how successful "The Fault on our Stars" was

    ReplyDelete
  11. I guess our predictions were kind of wrong. Still I can see Laura dropping next week. I thought RBS was going to do better.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I do hope RBS does decently in the Demo.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I wouldn't make much of whatever Laura does today in terms of its survival prospects. Remember Intelligence and Believe? Besides, I am not even sure if Laura will perform that well, it has potential to skew VERY old!

As for Red Band, FOX shows rarely perform well in overnights due to their young skew so it's even more important than usual to wait for the actual demo numbers. The 18-34s numbers could also be key here, as they are for Mindy & New Girl.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Fox is turning into the new CW with all this young skewing reliance. Sad for RBS loved it so I hope it just remains consistent. Laura wasn't so bad and I don't get why people want it to fail. It's upsetting to see fellow tv addicts root for a halfway decent show to fail. There are worse worse shows with bad plot lines. Laura is well above that.

    ReplyDelete
  15. They did release the pilot of Red Band Society early to US viewers , so that could have an effect on final ratings. (maybe)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Nashville deserves the third season renewal it got.
Marc you're biased against a lot of shows.

    ReplyDelete
  17. RBS dead by December. Thankfully.

    ReplyDelete
  18. They released the pilot of MANY shows early, is that going to be the go-to excuse?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Glee trends on Twitter when it airs and it does poorly. It means nothing,

    ReplyDelete
  20. What about Flash & Constantine? Those pilot got leaked and are available on line.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Don't pay attention to what Marc says. When he hates a show he will try everything to make the show look bad no matter the ratings it gets.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think i need to prepare myself since people will be talking more about Marcs phrasing that the ratings once again.

    ReplyDelete
  23. People should just ignore his comments. He has always been biased and that's not going to change.

    ReplyDelete
  24. It's just annoying; I will once again roll my eyes when he starts diminishing Revenge

    ReplyDelete
  25. Laura did well, but it may bomb next week.
Very low for RBS. FOX is having a veeery bad season already

    ReplyDelete
  26. no it didn't deserve a 3rd season.

    ReplyDelete
  27. So have plenty of other shows and they still premiere well.

    ReplyDelete
  28. No it didn't, which was why abc didn't want to renew it for a full 3rd season.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I agree. I thought RBS was going to get Laura's numbers and Laura's numbers were going to be that low.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I guess 1.3 is not very good :( But is it bad enough for them to cancel it immediately like what happen with Lucky 7 last year ?

    ReplyDelete
  31. I expected higher numbers for Red Band Society and lower ones for Laura. Oh well, I guess I'm just gonna enjoy RBS while it lasts.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I do know they have released many pilots. I am just saying it may well be a contributing factor , or it might not be.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think they will air all 13 eps...

    ReplyDelete
  34. I was just saying it could be a contributing factor.

    ReplyDelete
  35. FOX has proven lately to be more patient, I mean, they haven't pulled Utopia yet

    ReplyDelete
  36. FOX's Tuesday and Wednesday's look DOA

    ReplyDelete
  37. After having such a bad reaction to MoL, I just can't fathom the fact that id did that decently.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Red band society was so good, the ratings really surprised me.Mysteries of laura,on the other hand, was supposed to be DOA!Wow! Guess this fall will be full of surprises!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Wow...those ratings for RBS and MOL should be swapped imo, RBS was fantastic.

    ReplyDelete
  40. wow i expected the opposite didnt watch either but RBS looked much better

    ReplyDelete
  41. Ouch for RBS, I expected it to premiere better.
TMoL will definitely crash next week,

    ReplyDelete
  42. I thought RBS would perform badly

    ReplyDelete
  43. MOL will bomb next week

  45. in half-hours Laura had big drop and RBS even increased so i hope it won't fall next week

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm so glad for MOL because everybody predicted it to be DOA. I'll continue to watch it, it's not brilliant show, but it's fun and enjoyable. I don't watch RBS, it seems boring to me, but it's a shame because a lot of people seem to like it.

    ReplyDelete
  47. more competition next week. ABC with their whole comedy line up, Survivor comes back .NBC is all new.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yep. MOL is a show that's just trying to be entertaining and relatable. Few shows have perfect pilots but the vitriol aimed at this one is OTT. I'm happy to see it get a chance. It may not be my exact cup of tea but that doesn't mean I need it to "crash" to validate my POV.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Damn! Those ratings for Red Band Society seem DOA already! Which is a shame since I liked the pilot so much. Hopefully word of mouth helps the show.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I would wait for next week when it doesn't have a lead in before I declare MOL a rating winner

    ReplyDelete
  51. Joe Adalian @TVMoJoe · 2m

The fault was with the olds: Among teen girls 12-17, #RedBandSociety was b'cast TV's No. 1 primetime show Wed., with a 1.8 rating.

    Joe AdalianVerified account ‏@TVMoJoe 57s

RED BAND also has a huge gender gap: Its ratings among all female demos 2x that of its male demo ratings. Very ABC-like in that regard.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I don't get all the excitement about several people declaring TMOL a 'hit.' It will NEVER have that kind of lead-in again and it won't have a low-rated Extant and non-existent "Nashville (R)" to face. If it manages a 1.3 next week, I'll be surprised.

    ReplyDelete
  53. No lead in, time slot move, more competition, viewers leaving, viewers moving it to DVR watch list. I'm thinking 1.4 for next week.

    ReplyDelete
  54. If it did well in the 18-34 demo it has hope, but 12-17 is not really what FOX is looking for

    ReplyDelete
  55. Joe Adalian @TVMoJoe · 41s

Fox is projecting Red Band Society will see its debut numbers rise 46% in L3 (to a 1.9) and 62% in L7 (to a 2.1).

    ReplyDelete
  56. it could be even lower

    ReplyDelete
  57. how can you possibly predict a raise on DVR?

    ReplyDelete
  58. RBS. please be up next week i have hopes for you but then the next week all the big programs will start their new season. I dont see it going up e.e

    ReplyDelete
  59. Yeah, I will never understand people...

    ReplyDelete
  60. I didn't know RBS was coming on until two hours before the premiere.
