WOW ! what an episode !! I can't believe what I just saw ! That was soooo HOT ! And i'm really happy that there's equal male/female nudity and that it's not just one way ! It was tastefully done... Both of them ....Beautiful bodies lol...In the back of my mind i still wonder how actors can shoot scenes like this and stay serious/in character ! It was amazing....
During the first scene, especially when Claire was sitting in front of the mirror I couldn’t help but think how uncomfortable that corset looked. I mean it just didn’t look like it what it was doing to her breasts was comfortable. I was having sympathy pains.
I was taken aback at the approach to the episode. I thought it was successful I just expected it to play out exactly as it did in the book. I was not disappointed in the least.
Every time I start to like Dougal he does something that makes me was to pop him upside the head.
I did like (was that Rupert or Angus?) reaction to Claire thanking him for the ring.
This was beyond amazing! The chemistry they both have is flawless and every scene was just fantastic. I loved the sex scenes, they were hot, sensual, full of passion and yet so sweet. And they both have such great bodies! a little treat for every taste, I think. But I have to say that what I was waiting the most was for the wedding bows (of course I didn't cry, why would I?). Claire looked just beautiful even with that breast-compressing-torture-device she was wearing and Jamie looked as magnificent as the book described. Every week I'm more and more excited about this show!
I really appreciate that they went for equal opportunity ogling. I was worried about this scene (and another one which happens later in the book) but they handled it very, very well. Count me in as having been very distracted by Claire's squeezy dress, though.
Seems like it will work for this way, that I read the corresponding chapters after the episode, if I feel the need.
I think Starz can be proud. The channel was considered to be the home of gore-and-tits shows, where often seemed as if a few naked women was obligatory to be written into every episodes. Now they have managed to make one of the best sex scene I can remember.
IMHO the way two people love each other, what they let the other one see about themselves when there is nothing to hide behind, how awkward, tender or violent they are together is one of the most powerful way of depicting a character. It's very sad that usually these scenes are reduced just showing some flesh, ooohs and aaaahs.
I know, the book was a good foundation, but yet the track record of the channel and the general approach of sexuality or nudity on the American TV (either blackout after a kiss or copying softcore porn) made me worry. As I said above, I was wrong. Huge congratulation to Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan, it's not easy to make a meaningful love scene when there is more than just a few close ups of of two naked bodies.
Shallow note: that dress must have been extremely uncomfortable indeed :)
Wow! One the first times I felt I saw equal treatment in the bed room on screen! And as most have you have said, Bear's score has been so so wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!
OMG! So awesome! Just watched it. The chemistry between Jamie/Sam and Claire/Cait is so great and their scenes are so well done. Not only the sex scenes, but also their conversations. This episode is full of great scenes... Ned and Rupert/Angus and Willie/Dougal on their missions made me laugh; the wedding, the vows and their very first kiss made me sigh; Murtagh and the "sweetest smile" in remembrance of Jamie's mother almost brought tears to my eyes. And at the end I was tempted to hit Dougal where it hurts most. :D
I want to re-read the book so very badly. I've been wondering if I do start maybe I can stop myself when I hit the point of the mid-season break. I'm not known for my personal restraint so I am hesitating to try that. :-)
I think you hit the nail on the head of why the scene worked so well. There was such a balance that is indeed very rare. I think that balance pushed the scene into more than just a sex scene. It moved the character story forward. Far too frequently the sex scenes can be eliminated and the story (if there is one) suffers. Of the top of my head I can only think of one movie that was diminished by the elimination of the sex scene.
Here, this scene was about Jamie and Claire getting to know each other - since their friendship was relatively casual prior to their marriage. It also spoke to what kind of marriage it would be (respect, equality, etc.) and gave us a hint to who this new character (Jamie and Claire as a couple) would be through the rest of the series.
I couldn't quantify that until I read your comment. Thanks. :-)

I 100% agree! It was a great scene, because it was truly an intimate scene where it was about two people getting to know each other/explore each other on a much deeper level. It wasn't just sex with nothing behind it--very rare to see indeed. :)
I was disappointed. Mostly because of how poorly the sex scenes were filmed. After the oral sex scene in the pilot i expected more open-minded treatment of women's sexuality. 1 only Jamie's face was shown during orgasms. Female's pleasure is still something of a taboo on screen. 2 the first time he dropped on top of her, he thrusted inside her once, twice, three times and later she confessed she LIKED it? WTF? As a woman i guarantee you, we don't come after 5 thrusts. She had a bland face the whole time he panted, and i kept expecting her to admit to him he was inexperienced and she didn't enjoyed and then show him how, but instead she LIKED it. *rolls eyes* 3 she pleasured him but didn't ask the same in return. instead she was rewarded a pearl necklace. A bit stereotypical isn't it? a woman does her duty and gets a material thing in return. 4 second time he fucked her even harder. pushing in like he was stabbing something. And she yelled and mewled even louder and then came. Maybe some innocent teen girls will truly believe that it's all takes for a woman to come, but grown up women know better. I loled and was both outraged then she rolled on top of him and said he was great. Overall it felt like someone filmed a scene from Beatrice Small novel, where women orgasm when a man simply strokes them, and tried to pass it for progressive sex scene like the one with the oral sex in the pilot. i read a short description of the books and in it, it said that Claire was surprised by how rudimentary jamie's understanding of love making was and she fixed it and taught him better. i didn't see any of that, all i saw was a load of steaming crap straight out of soap opera.
The moments i liked as usual were the moments with the rest of the clan. when they searched for dress. and made ring and the priest)) etc. i love the clan's men so much. Great casting, great characters.
Yeah, the "I like it" was the one time I was a little bit stumped, but I think they made it clear that while the first time was okay the second time around was much better because they took their time, there was a lot of foreplay and Clair was leading Jamie somewhat (I'm glad that they didn't linger too long on the details...it's still supposed to be a TV show, not a porno). What I did like was the "woman don't like it" line because of what it implies....that all those stupid man never got what Jamie got because they either never bothered to ask their partner how they felt and what they wanted, or because there were two inexperienced people in bed imitating animals.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Ooh, the wedding sex was great and I approve. LOL. And Jamie and Claire are really cute together. God, I need to read the books.

ReplyDeleteWhat an episode, woohooo
ReplyDeleteOther than the scenes that made this show trend #OutlanderWedding I thought Claire made a beautiful bride and looked stunning in her wedding dress :)
ReplyDeleteAlso I really need the score because Bear McCreary is a genius :)
Oh yeah true ! The score was perfect ! and the dress was Beautiful ! With the silver leaves at the bottom...magnifique....
ReplyDeletePretty sure I just watched the best sex scene (scenes?) I’ve ever seen… ever…in a tv show!!! So well done!!!

It was a so beautifully done episode.
ReplyDeleteWhat an episode, I have never seen such an honest, natural and gritty depiction of sexuality on TV. A+.
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate that they went for equal opportunity ogling.

It was so well done.
ReplyDeleteI felt that it was not as good as the book. It was tepid for me....the book focused more on Claire's guilt and then her eventual acceptance.....
ReplyDeletewhat a beautiful episode!! Loved the tension, the sex, the conversations....everything was so well done!
ReplyDeleteSo much chemistry!
ReplyDeletethe actors need some serious recognition!
ReplyDeleteOne of the best scores on TV
ReplyDeleteStarz should be proud, indeed.
ReplyDeleteWow! One the first times I felt I saw equal treatment in the bed room on screen! And as most have you have said, Bear's score has been so so wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYa. I too was thinking that dress has to be so uncomfortable. I have to wonder if woman really "stayed in" with the breast line being so low?!
ReplyDeleteAnd ditto to Dougal! What an Arse!!

ReplyDeleteScience... of course... LOL
ReplyDeleteLol... what else would it be !? ;)
ReplyDeleteWhen I re-watched the wedding scene later that night. It looked like she was to losing a nipple. :-)

Aww, do it! I'm re-reading Outlander myself, and enjoying it even more this time!

An enabler! I was thinking..if I keep the parts that won't be aired until the second half of the season OFF of my iPod....I could do it.
ReplyDeleteNot bad, but a different style.
