  1. Awesome! How can there only be two episodes left for the season?!! :O

  2. That was great! Poor dude who got tortured and Claire. But I'm thrilled Claire and Jamie are getting married.

  3. There's not. It's just a long hiatus.

  4. Thank you, I know. I just meant till the end of the season (not the series, thank goodness) :)

  5. WOW ! what an episode ! I loved it ! I love that they allow long scenes where you can really get into it. Jamie's flogging ! the worst visual scene i've ever scene by worst I mean BEST but horrifying ! Jack Randall is such an asshole ! I'm reading the book and it's really nice to see some scenes come to life even though they change things a bit.... can't wait to see next week's episode with the wedding and the sex scene (let's not lie people ! you all wanna see it !! :D LOL)

  6. Lol no you don't know. Season 1 has 16 episodes, it's devided in two. 8 episodes now and the rest after the hiatus though we don't know when yet. Probably around January-February.

  7. What a brutal episode and yet so so so good.

  8. Wow.

I kept holding my breath...I'm not even certain I moved...during that entire sequence when Claire was alone with Black Jack Randall.

    Wow.

The location for St. Ninian's pond....was breathtakingly beautiful.

Several people have missed Jamie in this section...and tonight I felt it. I still haven't re-read the book yet, but I have this memory of Claire and Jamie's talks and I'm missing that. I felt like last week, like their conversation (after Dougal and Jamie have the argument about Dougal using him to garner larger donations) was cut short and I felt the same thing tonight.

Even feeling like that...an awesome episode!

  9. which flat out angered me when they announced it. We have DVRs now. I can handle the start of the fall season and not miss a single episode of Outlander. Honestly, at this point it is the top ranked of my shows.

  10. Yes! Somehow I expected them to back off a little on the flogging scene. But they went for it. And that fact justifies the faith I have put in Ron Moore to tell this story. Man, I was cringing at that flogging scene. Performances. Make up.

  11. Still trying to determine how I feel about this ep, yes, I know the acting was terrific, the visual effects were outstanding, the plot line was essential to the story but I just dont know. Defo more gore than had to be and hardly any Jamie, boo, hiss

  12. And then the whining would be about that why they haven't got 24 episodes and how long an eight month hiatus is?

IMHO they did the best what with careful planning could have been done. In September-October everything will be about the new shows, and some news about the returning ones and Outlander has not have the audience numbers to be able to stay in the news. This way they have a relatively short hiatus during which people will not forget completely where they left the show and then in the midseason they can come back with another two months run against the weaker midseason shows. This will also shorten the gap between the finale and the new season as well.

It doesn't mean I wouldn't like to watch the rest now, but a TV show is a product which they want to sell and want to sell not only once.

  13. "And then the whining would be about that why they haven't got 24 episodes and how long an eight month hiatus is?" LOL Maybe, but I doubt it given that they're doing the entire first book in season one. I suspect that many of the people who are upset about the spilt are upset because she have to stop in the middle of a story. It would be different if it were an episodic show but for some I'd guess that it will fill like their little sister hid the book just when they got to the good part. :-) For me personally, I reacted as I did more because they changed the initial schedule than the fact that they were going to split the season. (I suspect the change was affect in the change of start date.)

I completely understand the logic of the decision. The bulk of the American cable channels that air scripted shows air them off the Broadcast Network schedule. ( I don't get to play video games much these summers because there's good tv to watch.) Add to that the fact that it was an untested product it makes perfect sense not to put a struggling show up against all of the broadcast premieres. Luckily, I don't think the show is struggling (and already has a second season order...a magnificent salve to the hiatus.) but I haven't been watching the ratings like I used to.

  14. Luckily the show isn't struggling regarding the next season, though its ratings could be better. I think that in this case it's not a lucky situation that the show needs to fight with two prejudices.

Starz was formerly associated with the blood-gore-nudity genre: those who expected this from Outlander had left very quickly, but IMHO despite the generally positive reviews everywhere, it didn't manage to pick the attention of the wider audience.

The other prejudice is that the books are considered as a girly, bodice-ripper series, which also rejects Starz mostly male audience. I must admit that I started the book when I heard about the show, but stopped reading - it was not my style. IMHO the show while (up till now) sticks to the book very closely, it has a different "mood", or general tone than the book has and - at least to me and my taste - it is a huge advantage.

  15. Black Jack is a saddistic!!! The episode was awesome but maybe it wasn't necessary so much detail and realism in the flogging scene!

    ReplyDelete
  16. This episode took this already amazing show to a whole other level! Come Emmy time, this episode will be remembered.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Actually its doing better in the ratings than anything has on Starz since Spartacus. There is so much hype for this show and I am certain that when it comes back in January, the ratings will be significantly up. Its what happened with Game of Thrones, Dexter, the Walking Dead, shows that started with OK season 1 ratings to become huge hits.

  18. You can be right with the numbers, though even with this best performance the show often can't reach the top 100 cable programs on Saturdays. It isn't a problem until it brings the numbers what Starz expects and I hope you will be right with your predictions for the second half of the season.

  19. A season is really about the time of year within any give part of any given story is told, despite on how one choices to look at and/or the writers could conclude, or divide a narrative. So in any context, I made a simple and easy to understand remark that I was sad, because as far as my definition of what a season of TV series is, Outlander will be done after the next two episodes, despite that the novel's story and original 16 episode order has been split into two parts! There will be no Outlander until this time next year, just like every other Cable TV series...

I also figured since most cable shows have 8-13 episode seasons, that it was likely that Outlander's 16 episode order would be split in half. I also suspect that if Starz goes beyond Outlander, they may change the name to match the other books much like with the potential continuation of The White Queen being titled, The White Princess

  20. "Jamie's flogging ! the worst visual scene i've ever scene by worst I mean BEST but horrifying "

Yeah! It was really graphic. I was surprised! :O

  21. And for the record I just want to say that I wasn't complaining, just that ANY of my favorite shows, it's always hard to say goodbye to it whenever it goes on hiatus. It was meant to be a compliment of how good it is. I'm not Outraged, I will just miss it and long for it's return.

  22. Out of curiosity I read the connecting chapters in the book - I stay with the show. Richer, tenser, more vivid, simply better than the raw material.

Eg. Randall's beating and Dougal's "saving the day" appearance lacked the tension in the book, while here it was a sitting on the edge of my chair scene. The same with moving the story of Jamie's flogging to a different part of the events made it even more effective and made the scene between Claire and Dougal tighter.

  23. I have been a fan of the book for years but I completely agree. I think the decisions made by Ron more made the story even more engaging until now.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Tobias Menzies, is phenomenal. I agree best episode. I watched certain parts through my fingers. The ending made me smile. :)

  25. its stars they're not going to hold back on the gore. and it was needed, to show how much of a psychopath black jack is. besides we get to feel extremely sorry for Jamie, hence more in love with him.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yeah, I agree, the books are already pretty good, especially as soon as you get in the flow, but the show has (so far) been even better.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Black Jack Randall, that man is pure evil. In those times, such cruelty to women was frowned upon.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I mostly want to see how they'll handle it. It is one of the more questionable scenes in the book after all.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yes, there were some really good talks with Jamie in both occurrences. Just been rereading Outlander, so it's fresh in my memory.

  30. He definitely is NOT like Frank, and he IS a true sadist!

I recall at the outreach event with Diana there, she said she was really looking forward to the scene with Jamie's flogging and rape--not sure how I felt about her breathlessly awaiting that.... What goes on in that lady? She IS a great writer, but....

Certainly, we do love Jamie and we hate Black Jack for that!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I was scared to start listening to the book again because I feared I would finish before the broadcast finished. Now having been reminded of the hiatus...I'm going to have to wait longer before I re-listen to the book. I don't want my memory so fresh that I find myself constantly comparing specifics.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Despite the reputation, the books are mostly for people who are really into history and love historical romans which are very detailed about the everyday life and culture of the past. Despite the "eternal love story" they are not as romantic as one might expect from the premise.
I think the main difference is that the books can really drag with all the details in it, while the series simply can show the difference without much explanation needed.

  33. Jamie's rape??? 0_0

    ReplyDelete
  34. I know. She kinda freaked me out a little with that comment! Diana is not the person I imagined her to be....quite an unconventional woman!

    ReplyDelete
  35. What I meant is that i haven't read the book. I didn't know that happens to Jamie. Be careful with the spoilers of the book, please.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I haven't seen that episode yet, so maybe they didn't do what they did in the book.
