Love this show! So beautifully filmed and such a great look at history. Like Claire's relationship with Ned! Who know's (except for book readers of course) what Claire is going to say to young red coat and gang!?????
I think Jamie's character has not been developed that well as of yet, but I really like Claire. The strong voice overs (and flashbacks) carry the series. She may look to old for book readers, but the actress is believable as head strong and experienced, other wise I fear it wouldn't seem as realistic that anyone would ever take her seriously...
Claire is a bit older than Jamie in the book too, he is absolutely the perfect Jamie, a younger warrior, principled with a heart of gold for his clan even though he has been badly abused by the English. I guess I can understand why they are holding this series back from the UK.
Both of the actors work wonderfully for me. The actress playing Claire doesn't strike me as too old but I did, while watching tonight, think 'Isn't Jamie supposed to be 21 or 22?'
I think the episode was doing too good a job of imparting an idea of how long they were on the road. I wanted to hit an FF button and get to a couple of much loved bits from this section of the book. (And they changed one of my favorite moments!) The mysterious red coat was new and a surprise. Though I did wonder why, not one of the people out paying their rent mentioned to a clansman in the party that a Red Coat was on site that day. Someone would have given the War Chief of the Clan MacKenzie a heads up about that. The gossip mill and the simple fact that he's the enemy....the idea that no one mentioned it just isn't believable. Smart guy though---'I'm out numbered so I'm getting the heck out of dodge.' I did like the way they handled Claire figuring out what the money raising was really about.
We're coming up on some major plot points and I want to get there now! :-)
The actors are basically the same age, in their mid-30s, but we know how common it is for television to 'de-age' folks ('high schoolers' in their 30s, anyone?). The casting works for me.
I think Caitriona Balfe is awesome as Claire, I haven't read the books but she's perfect to me and incredibly beautiful :) Completely agree with your comment about realism, I really enjoy the flashbacks and voice overs too :)
In the books Jamie is 23 and Claire 27 years old. I too think the actress playing Claire seems bit too old but I guess that's just the hard nature of the 18th century where you don't have beauty sleeps or moisturizing cream.
I loved this episode. Its official, this episode turned me into a full fledged Outlander junkie. "Rent" has been the best episode for me so far, it combined all of the strengths of the series. The pacing, the acting, the production design, the dialogue, the costumes, makeup and hair were all fantastic. The scenery only make the atmosphere feel even more authentic and magical. I love that this show focuses on the stories, the main characters and the society they live in. It talks about politics, religion, feminism, war, etc., and it does so in a way which is both compelling and directly contrasted in its main characters. Critics watched the first six episodes of this show and have said that episode 6 is the highlight, its where the show really steps up its game. After "Rent", I will be waiting in anticipation all week. "Rent" gets an A from me!!!!
Next week is the long awaited and critically praised episode 6(all critics have hailed it as epic and game changing). Its going to be a nail bitter, color me intrigued.
Yes! She is perfect! I think if the actress looked or sounded too young, despite whatever the character's age is, it just would be hard to believe she is capable (has dealt with death and war) in any sense, despite whether or not she is for clan McKenzie and Viewers alike....
Well I just think novel writers can get away easier with characters appearances in terms of believability. compared to how an audience takes someone visually onscreen. I'm sure there are lots of people in war/medical fields in any time period who don't necessarily look or sound as though they have been in war/are in the medical field, but in this case, I think if they want the audience to believe she is a survivor and useful, then maturity (in conduct and appearance) is a necessity for when Claire now is...
i love the ethereal feel of the highland scenes, they feel both dreamlike and real at the same time. kudos to all the designers who are so often unsung- they've created a real world twiceover!
I agree. It is really hard to portray all the young Jamie, "lad" stuff when the guy is mid-30s. It is going to be really awkward to explain why the guy is still a virgin/unmarried. They are just pretending he is book age when he doesn't act or look it.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Could have had a better cast. He is nice looking but is not Jamie Frasier, she is too old for the role.

ReplyDeleteI dont remember this scene in the books. My wild guess is that she will mot betray the Mckenzies.
ReplyDeleteI think both of them quite perfect. Diana Gabaldon thinks so too, so I heard. Maybe you should give them a chance.

ReplyDeleteAgreed. Maybe before the fight in the tavern, but not after.
ReplyDeleteAre they really?
ReplyDeleteI need a promo asap.

True, but she still looked youthful compared to most of the other woman presented in the wool-dyeing part of the episode.
ReplyDeleteYou're right. This last scene isn't in the book.

ReplyDeleteOn the books Claire is 28 years old and if someone takes into consideration that she has been through the hardships of WW2 her looks can be justified.
ReplyDeleteWell there is the vote for Scottish independence coming up soon...

ReplyDeleteFive episodes is a chance.
