The pilot started off kinda slow but picked up halfway through. Poor baby Bruce. And aw, I have a feeling that Jim isn't going to be all wide-eyed and idealistic for long.
Jada Pinkett Smith's character is awesome and I love her. And I want to know more about Renee and Gordon's girlfriend's relationship!
Gotham, did not disappoint it had me from the beginning to the ending, for a minute I thought I was watching a movie, I loved the pacing and the music wonderful, Jada Pinkett rocked it Fish Mooney down right scary, I Loved it now Fox has got to keep it around this show Is a winner!!!
I really enjoyed it, the sets were really impressive, Fish Mooney was amazing but I really liked Penguin and the Riddler, tweeting with the cast was a lot of fun! I'm sold on the show, can't wait for next week!
It was good, not great. I'm in for a few more episodes. I liked the Penguin and Enigma characters and Alfred was good but I like the actor. Bulluck was entertaining but I figured he would be Gordon is good but it's a fine line between Boy Scout and boring, a little development will help.
What really didn't work and felt totally unnecessary were the Selina and Ivy characters, I know this was just the pilot but they really felt unnecessary and only thrown in for Batman/Catwoman and Poison Ivy characters. Was it really necessary to tie Selina to young Bruce Wayne?
Great to look at, high production values and good acting...but it was way too much cop procedural for my tastes, taking itself way too seriously so I'll pass on future episodes. The dark tone of the Chris Nolan Batman films works for a 2 hour theatrical film but sitting through this week after week would be challenging for me.
The truth is this had very lofty expectations. I won't say it's an instant hit but it certainly got my attention. The characters were certainly well cast. I'd say it's worth another 3 episodes. If it's still got my attention then I'd say it worth a full season look.
I think the pilot was amazing and really well acted. The first half was a little bit slow introducing so many character but it picked up nicely. Everybody was perfectly cast.
The guy playing the Penguin was excellent. I thought critics and fans were overhyping his performance but he blew my mind. Jada Pinkett Smith stole the show. I knew it was going to be interesting seeing her as a villain but she was a lot better than I expected.
Sorry but no. You have been hating this show since day 1. I get that you hate everything DC and any superhero stuff that isn't a comedy. It's ok. To each their own.
But you were never going to give this show a fair chance. I wonder if you even watched it.
How the f**k do I hate DC if I'm overly invested in Arrow? Why would it stop me fromgiving a show a fair chance despite not liking a trailer? I freaking hated The Flashs pilot and am still ready to give it a fair chance.
If you need to get down to a personal level of bashing we have nothing to discuss. I'm more than willing to give this show a fair shot, if it fails me now I'll try again later in the season.
Take that freaking stick out of your ass and start accepting that people might be willing to change their views on things. I gave this show a shot to convince me, I'll give it two more.
Not sure if the show was that bad to justify you getting defensive and personal
You really need to chill and stop taking everything so personal. Every time somebody disagrees with you and tries to challenge some of your points you start insulting. Seriously calm down and stop being so defensive.
you just literally questioned my integrity in terms of having watched it, you should be aware that this IS kind of insulting, right? You my friend were the person to state that I was never going to give this show a fair shot (wich is bull) and insituated that I lied about watching it...I won't chill if someone suggests that...it IS insulting and pretty damn hurtful...I didn't sit through this show and held back my judgement just for having some self entitl......*breathes in, breathes out*
Not sure about you but I hate the thought of someone disagreeing and trying to disprove everything someone said by simply suggesitng that this person is straight out lying. I take that personal. If you don't see why people would have a problem with such behaviour you may need to update your capability of interacting with others
I thought it was very interesting! The last Batman movie I watched starred Michael Keaton, so I'm not that familiar w/the mythology but this was interesting. I will watch it again next week!
I have to say it was a lot better and more creative than I thought it would be. I didnt have big expectations for it (I love Shield but the show in the beginning wasn't very good and my expectations for that show's beginning I think affected this one) but it definitely blew them away. I thought the beginning was kinda slow and I mean we all knew the origin we've seen it in a lot of media but it took a big spin half way through and was entertaining it felt like 2 episodes in 1 and it really worked not overcrowding the main characters with people like Ivy and Riddler and just gave them appearances for now to make bigger later. For a pilot, it worked great so I'm ready for more! Still not as good as Arrow but close but better than Shield i have to say. Flash we'll see if it beats Gotham or not but I think it will.
I get that. My problem more stems from the fact that I feel they're shoving so many villains and origin stories in at once that it just feels contrived. That and not a huge fan of procedurals. The tone doesn't really bug me a ton though because I expected it, but a joke or two would be nice.
pretty good ep, not quite great as yet as there was something in the pacing to me that made things feel rushed in introducing the characters, the layers of the bureaucracy and corruption that detracted from my enjoyment but that is something that will settle out more than likely. as for the casting, I really enjoyed Fish, Bullock and Gordon the most. Lots of potential here and I'll be sampling for a few eps more to see how things will progress, but this was a good start
Excellent start to this new series (No Spoilers)! - Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) was outstanding...............more please! - the alley scene was direct and to the point. Very ruthless.........very realistic. - the character who will become the Penguin is a worm.............with sharp teeth and lots of ambition. - the character who will become the Riddler is the "Odd - Ball" forensic examiner that no one likes. - Gotham is dark, but not Batman dark.......yet. It's like the city that will one day become Gotham. The acting, dialog, cinematography, and the wardrobe were excellent........the Nolan influence is clear. I don't know about the rest of you but I was really waiting for the "shooter" to say to little Bruce Wayne, "Ha, kid...........if ever dance with the Devil in the pale moonlight?" 4 A DARK KNIGHT IN GOTHAM, I am Nobody
I couldn't wait to watch it but...it wasn't all that great. I'm not sure if it's because I've been so hyped up for it. it sure didn't deliver. :/ I'll give it a few episodes
I often watch shows and live-action movies about comic-book characters even though I don't read comic books. I think you can enjoy them without really knowing that much about them. I do sometimes google some of the characters/villains just to get an idea of who they are because I'm often not that familiar with them. I recently watched Arrow and the Green Arrow is a character I knew really nothing about going into the show but I was still able to enjoy it.
I liked the Christopher Nolan movies. I've never really watched the Adam West stuff - I've seen some clips and it just looks too dated for me to really enjoy.
I thought it was a pretty good pilot. I'm hoping it will pick up over the next few episodes - a lot of shows start of kind of slow and take a few episode for me to really get invested in the show (AoS took me half a season to get into so I'm hoping it won't take that long). I'm not sure how little Bruce Wayne is going to fit in as a main character though.
loved it, the most compelling actor for me that got me is david especially that last scene, very chilling and that scene with montoya and barbara WAS very homerotic, that was a hell of a way to end the pilot with cobbelpot, that look that nygma gave gordon when he figured out the riddle right away was very telling or maybe it's just me, love seeing selina on rooftops and i like the way she moves like a cat even the head tilt in the opening, i'm sorry for saying this but alfred's kind of a douchebag, it never really hit until tonight but the fact that we're seeing a show where the hero won't win in the end makes me depressed
- I can see this working week-to-week straight out of the Pilot.
- The casting for the villains is superb
- Production quality was top notch. Way better than SHIELD's Pilot.
Cons:
- The actor and character of Gordon is so generic right now. I was hoping for less "Scowly McScowl" than we got.
- The dialogue. My god was the dialogue bad. Not even Donal Logue, who I love, could save those lines. Even when the lines weren't so bad they were very rushed. Nothing had time to breathe.
- For a show called "Gotham" they sure didn't showcase the city very much.
I'm tempted to list all the canon character introductions as a Con because they were so overt and heavy-handed but I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Hopefully they only shoved all of that in there to get it out of the way ASAP.
The second episode will be very make or break for me.
Unfortunately this didn't live up to my expectations at all. With the exception of the Penguin none of the characters stood out for me. It felt like something I could see in any crime procedural, this just had batman characters name thrown in. I'll give it another few episodes and hope it approves.
I personally found a few of the scenes funny but I guess we all have different tastes. anyways it's all good, shame that you didn't like it. Hope you give it at least another try.
I couldn't agree more, I absolutely loved it. I felt like I was almost watching a movie. There are plenty interesting plot lines, well at least to me, to keep me going. I really loved JPS as Fish and enjoyed the guy who played Pengiun. I was very impressed with Mckenzie's take on Gordon. I also thought Bullock was perfectly cast.
The creators said that they would give us a possible Joker throughout different episodes during the season to reflect Joker's mysterious past. (Note: I am not sure of their exact wording but that was basically what they said.)
As someone who is not too immersed in the whole DC thing, it was an enjoyable pilot. Ben McKenzie is decent as the lead and Jada's Fish Mooney is deliciously cartoonish and over the top. More of her please!
That's my big problem as well and you know they won't be able to resist pulling in The Joker...not sure about Ra's Al Ghul since another property got him this year.
I don't hate Nolan, I hate the stamp he pressed onto the DC universe. Loved Prestige though. The thing about TDK is that it's not a bad movie in any shape or form, I went into it with completely off expectations though! Subjectively the movie let me down, objectively it was a solid action thriller (overhyped but good). What do I like comic wise? Literally everything, comics I rarely judge based on their style and tone.
Comic adaption wise? I have yet to hate any Marvel production, I do like Baman Begins (as it is the least Nolanized Batman of his trilogy), Superman 1-2, Batman 1-3 (minus Batman & Robin wich was bad...but so bad it's GOOD dude, I kind of love it...but can't count it as one of my favourites), Smallville, Birds of Prey, Louis and Clark, Justice League Unlimited, basically every cartoon from the late 90s if one asks me what I want for in a Gotham series I can simply give them one example: The Arkham Games.
These have become the definitive adaption for me. I'm usually not that deep into video games but holy shit did these games DELIVER the atmosphere!
note: I don't build hate against Arrow, the show, but rather a ship that has been the marketings sole focus.
I enjoyed Burtons take on Gotham, it really became its own character. It delivered the obscurity that the Batman comics usually hold, to me Burton really managed to translate the spitit of Gotham onto the big screen. As for Nolans version...it was to grounded and bland for me. I know people like realism these days, I just don't want it injected into Batman.
And I agree on the depressing part, it's overly melodramatic.
That being said: it was only the pilot, pilots usually aren't too sure of what they want to become. I'll give it 2 more episodes as we get a pretty good idea of what the show will be in these next episodes :)
All those things are pretty great. (Particularly the DCAu and Arkham games when dealing with Batman) (Batman and Robin though I teeter between hatred and finding it hilarious, unlike the 1966 Barman show which is so beautiful). Regarding the Arrow comment I did jump the gun, but to be fair you did say at one point that you wanted the shoe to fair-granted it was because of overexposure to Olicity but still. But all in all I really have to agree with all those things (well except TDK I love that film).
Not a fan of Joker being involved (story reasons and his while symbolic thing with Batman). Also really hope Ra's isn't brought in. The one thing I hope this series will do in a few years (but doubt) is devote time to Bruce's training and psychological transformation.
I did, I was kind of enraged at that point though, I don't follow as many shows live as I want to (sociallife is becomin overbearing for a media enthusiast like me) but Arrow (and The Originals) are these shows where I specifically say "Stop it guys, got to do something more important right now", it has become one of these things that remind me of growing up: religiously following a show.
I really don't like the way it's being promoted because it's just giving me the fear of becoming something I won't be able to enjoy anymore. I know that I'm most likely wrong on that but I`m just unreasonable if it's about that.
I get that. I fear Arrow ever turning into an Olicity, or Lauroliver (or however it's spelt show). But Arrow isn't TVD or The Originals, the writers clearly don't want a romance to become the focus of the show or take precedent of plot (like in season 2 with Oliver and Sara, it was a thing but a generally subdued one). Not to mention given everything we've seen from the writers in the past and what we know about season 3, the writers clearly respect Green Arrow, DC mythology and want to do it justice. I get why the advertising bugs you at times, but I also feel that you're too paranoid about such things (the advertising is a completely separate department and not in any way done with the writers or producers).
This show need to learn the art of subtly. Seriously starting with young Catwoman stealing milk wasn't a great sign, then annoying dude who tells riddles all the time (jeez I wonder who he might be!) and oh look its Poison Ivy taking care of plants. Seriously. Be a bit less obvious show or its going to get tired really quick.
Things I did like, Sean Pertwee as Alfred. Now obviously he won't be able to beat Michael Caine who is the greatest in that role but I liked what we have seen of his Alfred so far.
Jada Pinkett Smith was really over the top as Fish Mooney but it kind of worked and I liked it.
Also liked the main man himself Ben McKenzie as Gordon though I do have a soft spot for Ben because of Southland.
It wasn't a terrible pilot and if it can fix its constant need to make big neon signs which announce HEY LOOK ITS A FUTURE VILLAIN then I think it could be pretty good, great even.
Solid episode 8/10. I think they are going to have 2 main plots (and a lot of secondary ones). Gordon fighting corruption and the mob, being the first one. Bruce and Selina developing, into the people they'll become as adults, being the other main plot. I wonder if they will develop a friendship, seems like that's were the writers are headed.
Yeah they should of just concentrated, on Penguin, Cat Woman, and the Mob. I understand why they added Ivy this early (though they should of waited), but Riddler at this point was over the top.
I think the show has potential, but it has a sever identity problem. It did not have the charm, action or humor I tend to see in comic-based series, but it also did not have the grit and darkness I would associate with a town in peril. It felt like it was straddling the fence on many stylistic and substantive aspects.
The villains felt awkward to me. They were not grounded enough to be taken seriously as realistic bad guys in a drama, but they were not entertaining enough to be comic-book villains to me either. It felt like two competing teams of writers fought for aspects and the end result was nothing being great, nothing being on point. *shrug*
The pilot did have a strong visual impact though.
I will give it a couple more episode to see if the show can find its footing ans decide what type of series it wants to be. If not, I'm out.
Woa! It was great! Really entertaining, with a lot of characters of huge importance: Selina, Nygma and Penguin were incredible! And what about Pinkett Smith's Fish... She was amazing!
Also loved to have Ben on my TV again, i'm a huge O.C. fan but Suthland never caught my eye! This one surely did!
PS: I WANT AN ARROW/GOTHAM CROSSOVER LIKE RIGHT NOW! These two universe could work like chocolate and dulce de leche! :P
As a film noir piece mob...about a good cop in a corrupt city... It worked for me. The performances were, over all really good. The guy playing James Gordon was too strident for me. Other performances were very good.
All the comic book character references came off as excess baggage. I don't really care about Ivy or Bruce Wayneas a pre-teens. Not even enough to see how they could possibly be relevant to the story. However, the writing and performances were good enough that I will check out the second ep to see if it grabs me.
I liked it. The acting was good and it was a good setup pilot. I felt like I had seen most of it in the promo´s, so I wasn´t so surpriced with any of it. I doubt it will be my new favorite show, but I´ll watch a few more episodes for sure.
The Penguin's performance stood out for me also, as did Selina with the little she's done so far, they have some great younger talent on the show, which is a good sign for it succeeding imo.
I liked it very much! More than I thought I would. I don't know if I like their Alfred, though, that much. He seems more like a thug than a sophisticated butler and mentor to Wayne.
Not good, not bad. The acting was quite good although I didn't like Logue acting. I think the wrong actor Bullock's role. Who starred Butch Gilzean? He was good.
The opening was so dumb, the selina kyle segment just silly, the killing of Bruce's parents, dumb, all just dumb...the cinematography, acting, writing, directing, terrible. Efter like half of the ep. it got better, when they tried to be fun instead of serious, it worked, better. Not sure yet, but I will give it a few more Eps.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
It was ok. Need more, still not hyped about it. But it was watchable. Can't give a full comment now. Sleepy Hollow now!!!
ReplyDeletedark and awesome !! the perfect companion with sleepy hollow.

ReplyDeleteInteresting pilot, enough for me to take a look at the next episode.
ReplyDeleteBetter than I expected- agree that it was movie quality.
ReplyDeleteI think you need a few more exclamation points to really sell it. ;)
ReplyDeleteLol, great point:)!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat to look at, high production values and good acting...but it was way too much cop procedural for my tastes, taking itself way too seriously so I'll pass on future episodes. ReplyDeleteNot hating, disliking. Hate looks different (Reign knows what I mean)
ReplyDeleteThat being said I'm still not hot on hating it,doesen't mean I won't
Loved it !!!!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the 'guy' who shot Bruce's parents will end up turning into the Joker.
Do yourself a favor and watch the last Nolan Batman movie. It has nothing to do with this, but it's an excellent ending to the trilogy.

ReplyDeleteYou gotta see the Nolan Batman trilogy. Not to understand this, but just to see how well made it is.
ReplyDeleteIt is quite awesome.
ReplyDeleteWell it is Gotham City, the most corrupt and broken city in all of DC. It's not a fun place to live in.
ReplyDeleteWe get it Mac you hate Nolan.
ReplyDeleteI have to say it was a lot better and more creative than I thought it would be. if one asks me what I want for in a Gotham series I can simply give them one example: The Arkham Games.
These have become the definitive adaption for me.
I'm usually not that deep into video games but holy shit did these games DELIVER the atmosphere!
note: I don't build hate against Arrow, the show, but rather a ship that has been the marketings sole focus.
it was okay. The show surely has good potential but it needs to work on it.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Burtons take on Gotham, it really became its own character.
ReplyDeleteIt delivered the obscurity that the Batman comics usually hold, to me Burton really managed to translate the spitit of Gotham onto the big screen.
ReplyDeleteSorry meant to fail regarding Arrow.
ReplyDelete"Have you ever danced with the Devil in the Pale Moonlight?
ReplyDeleteJack does like to say that, especially b/c he likes the way it sounds. lolol Your a nut!!!
Not a fan of Joker being involved (story reasons and his while symbolic thing with Batman). Also really hope Ra's isn't brought in. The one thing I hope this series will do in a few years (but doubt) is devote time to Bruce's training and psychological transformation.
ReplyDeleteOh and I meant show not shoe (damn iPhone).
ReplyDeleteI did, I was kind of enraged at that point though, I don't follow as many shows live as I want to (sociallife is becomin overbearing for a media enthusiast like me) but Arrow (and The Originals) are these shows where I specifically say "Stop it guys, got to do something more important right now", it has become one of these things that remind me of growing up: religiously following a show.
ReplyDeleteI really don't like the way it's being promoted because it's just giving me the fear of becoming something I won't be able to enjoy anymore.
ReplyDeletetrue, I am paranoid regarding ships (always though, not just Arrow. I'm already dreading Klayley shippers on TO, Delena shippers on TVD and whatnot)
ReplyDeleteLet's just cross our fingers,Arrow is too precious to become a ship-fest
OK so negative stuff first.
ReplyDeleteThis show need to learn the art of subtly.
Was a good first episode , will be watching next week for sure!
ReplyDeleteAgreed. I really hope it never happens to Arrow.
ReplyDeleteIt's really silly and silver age-y. It's not for everyone.
ReplyDeleteSolid episode 8/10.
ReplyDeleteYeah they should of just concentrated, on Penguin, Cat Woman, and the Mob. I understand why they added Ivy this early (though they should of waited), but Riddler at this point was over the top.
ReplyDeleteNot sure how to feel about the premiere....
ReplyDeleteI think the show has potential, but it has a sever identity problem.
Really enjoyed it, wasn't planning on watching (not a comic person) will continue!
ReplyDeleteWoa! It was great! Really entertaining, with a lot of characters of huge importance: Selina, Nygma and Penguin were incredible! And what about Pinkett Smith's Fish... She was amazing!
ReplyDeleteAlso loved to have Ben on my TV again, i'm a huge O.C. fan but Suthland never caught my eye! This one surely did!
PS: I WANT AN ARROW/GOTHAM CROSSOVER LIKE RIGHT NOW! These two universe could work like chocolate and dulce de leche! :P
Hmmmm.
ReplyDeleteAs a film noir piece mob...about a good cop in a corrupt city...
ReplyDeleteI doubt it will be my new favorite show, but I´ll watch a few more episodes for sure.
The Penguin's performance stood out for me also, as did Selina with the little she's done so far, they have some great younger talent on the show, which is a good sign for it succeeding imo.
ReplyDeleteI liked it very much! More than I thought I would. I don't know if I like their Alfred, though, that much. He seems more like a thug than a sophisticated butler and mentor to Wayne.
ReplyDeleteNot good, not bad. The acting was quite good although I didn't like Logue acting. I think the wrong actor Bullock's role. Who starred Butch Gilzean? He was good.
ReplyDeleteThe opening was so dumb, the selina kyle segment just silly, the killing of Bruce's parents, dumb, all just dumb...the cinematography, acting, writing, directing, terrible. Efter like half of the ep. it got better, when they tried to be fun instead of serious, it worked, better. Not sure yet, but I will give it a few more Eps.
