Intruders - The Shepherds and the Fox - Review: "Why hello Rose"

Episode 5 Review Of "The Shepherds and the Fox" (Updated with Promo below)

This was the most revealing episode yet. We first see a flashback to Marcus's past, which gave us an insight on just how evil he is. The flashback is of Marcus 9 years ago. The police storm his home and discover 8 bodies which look like they have decayed; the police soon find more under the floorboards. As there are so many floor boards it made me wonder how many are under there. Marcus was a serial killer back in the past, so who in their right mind would want to bring him back?. I soon realized that after the police stormed Marcus's house that he had disappeared, this is when I think he went to see Shepherd to ask him "to shepherd me of the books" (remember we heard this in episode 3).

It makes the most sense that Shepherd brought him back as Shepherd was the one who triggered Marcus when we first saw him with Madison in episode 1. I believe Shepherd did it for his own greed as later on in the episode he says "You paid me a lot of money to Shepherd you back" I don't know why anyone in their right mind would want to bring someone as nasty and evil as Marcus is back. He must of been paid a hell of a lot. We do also a see another scene of Marcus, he has gone home to where he used to live. At this point it keeps switching between Marcus and Madison. She calls her mother on a stranger's phone after waltzing through the front door. She seems fine until suddenly Marcus has a memory of his knives on the wall. You also see briefly him about to kill a boy. So Marcus killed children. What I don't get is why did nobody catch him, if there was a string of murders in a town surely there would be a huge investigation wouldn't there? Eventually Shepherd tracks him down again to the house. Shepherd ultimately lets Marcus slip through his fingers again after failing to shoot him for the 3rd time. Why does he bother to keep going after him if he can't bring himself to pull the trigger?

We see another scene with Shepherd; he is talking to Frank Shepherd. Rose has ordered Frank to Kill Jack "off the books". I wonder why she seems to be scared of Jack , he is hardly a threat at this point , Gary is more likely to expose them. We find out that Frank recruited Shepherd into quee revirty , and that only certain people are allowed to join this group. I wonder how they choose , what process has to happen for them to pick new recruits and what exactly people like Frank, who recruit them say to the people to make them join?

We see Jack get a phone call from an unknown number to ask to meet up on pier 9. Frank is ready and waiting. Jack could tell by the tone of Franks voice and how he was putting gloves on that it wasn't a friendly chat he was after. The scene produced a nice little fight scene between them where Jack stabbed Frank with a hook. Just as Frank was about to gun down Jack, Shepherd turned up and shot Frank. Why would Shepherd turn on his mentor? Maybe Shepherd is playing on his own team or maybe Rose had a change of heart and wanted Jack to live.

The majority of the episode was spent with Jack again. After the pier attack, he goes to visit Gary at the hotel he is staying at. By the looks of things Gary has become obsessed with Qui Reverti, just like the radio guy. His suspicion wasn't wrong though. We got confirmation on many things during Jack and Gary's conversation. Gary said that Bill Anderson's ghost machine works, after Gary went round to Bill's house months ago to ask him about that check that he didn't want. When no one answered the door Gary went round the back and got exposed to the machine which made him feel queasy and sick. We see this in a series of flashbacks. Could a ghost have gone into him, as it takes 9 years for the ghost to be triggered, so I presume from what I have heard. We see another flashback with Gary and his little girl, he is in the nursery after struggling to sleep due to the illness he has been getting after seeing the machine. He goes over to her and her eyes change, Gary strongly believes that a soul went inside her, and that it was Donna's (the girl from episode 1 blowing out the birthday cake). Maybe this is how they start off they put their soul into a young baby and wait 9 years to be triggered and come back. This probably happened to Madison as well, a ghost/soul went in her and now she has been triggered.

What I don't get is what is the point in taking over children when they have zero authority in the world. Why not use a grown up, someone who can do real damage? Gary later says how the girl didn't kill herself it was another soul inside her which did. This was after Jack questions what Gary is saying. Jack is in denial, he wont open his eyes and look at the bigger picture even though it has been staring him in the face the whole time. Gary tells us how this group believes everybody has two souls and when one dies they can trigger the soul back into consciousness. They can probably do this by using another body which we have seen. I am still not entirely sure what exactly triggers them, maybe the number 9 card? Which we still by the way don't know where it came from or what its purpose is. The group knows how to keep coming back into another body, so effectively they cannot die.

Another thing I have noticed is, how come Shepherd hasn't aged, he seems the same age in all the flashbacks we have seen of him some in the 1900's. I thought the idea was if they die they could come back, not live forever using the same body. After revealing to Jack also that Rose is in the hotel, you could see Jack hoping it was Amy so at least his mind would be at rest Jack puts Gary to bed and is about to leave when he sees Shepherd coming. He runs back into the room and looks through the spy-hole. He sees Shepherd and Rose or should I now say Amy! I knew she was Rose, there was really no other option. I am glad at least we know who is effectively controlling Amy and that she isn't just losing the plot. Rose/Amy seems to be in charge , well the Shepherds seem to take orders from her at least. I do like the idea of a female boss, as in most things the big bad boss is always a man. So it is refreshing for a woman to be in charge (well I think she is in charge, there could be someone else). The last thing we hear is Shepherd saying "we need to talk" probably about Marcus, Shepherd might confess to her that he brought him back if he does I wonder how she will respond.

Summary
I know I say it every week, nearly , but this was the best episode yet. The episode was thrilling right from the start , the pace has really picked up and we have now got many answers. I now understand what is happening and more importantly, how it is happening.We know who Rose is , and we know a brief history about Marcus and why nobody wants him back. The show keeps getting better week by week. Another brilliant episode.
