HBO Passes on Open

12 Sept 2014

HBO has said no to Ryan Murphy.

More than a year after ordering it to pilot, the premium cable network has opted to not move forward on the Glee and American Horror Story creator's sexuality drama Open, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. "After such a triumphant collaboration with The Normal Heart, everyone felt that Open was not the right next step for all involved," HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said in a statement. "However, we fully expect to work together again in the near future."

Fringe's Anna Torv, Scott Speedman (Felicity), Michelle Monaghan (True Detective) and Wes Bentley (The Hunger Games) starred in the pilot, which was one of four dramas in the works at HBO.

The cabler also passed on David Milch's Money and has a rock drama from Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger as well as high-profile drama Westworld, The Missionary and Laughs Unlimited, among others, still in the works.

  1. Whew! I was afraid Anna Torv would be off the market for the next 4 years. I'd rather see her get involved in something interesting.

  2. I'm honestly happy this wasn't picked up. The premise sounded awful (and Ryan Murphy attached to it wasn't helping the show at all). Hopefully Anna Torv continues to find new projects because I definitely need her back on my TV soon.

  3. Sorry, that was my mistake :( We have so many posts to post.

  4. Yay. This sounded sooo boring and the cast is too good for this. Even if it wasn't boring, so not my thing. Yay again.

  5. I thought the premise was engaging but, like you, didn't think Murphy attached to it was the right choice. He's got too many fingers in too many pies and the quality of his shows is suffering. 'Glee' is a train wreck and 'AHS: Coven', while excellent in terms of acting and production value, left a lot to be desired in the writing department.

  8. I want Anna to have a great cable show but I'm glad it wasn't this one because Ryan Murphy's series usually only have one good season before crashing and burning into rubbish.

  9. Good thing, The New Normal never went on for more than one season then.

  10. Surprised at the original title, as Westworld's pilot hasn't even wrapped production yet.

BTW, They passed on The Missionary LAST September.
