Family Guy - The Simpsons Guy - Review: "When The Griffins came to Springfield"
Sep 29, 2014
Family Guy ReviewsPlease note: I will not be doing weekly reviews of the show , only occasional ones for specials , crossovers etc.
Peter starts creating an article for a newspaper called for Pete's sake. His "Pete's sake" cartoons are deemed unfunny and sexist by woman, which obviously because it is Peter they are. The woman of Cohog rally outside the Griffins home shouting "You're sexist" at him. This forces the Griffins to leave town in a matter of urgency. So they set off and finally stumble across a little old town called Springfield.
I was first a bit skeptical going into the episode , thinking if they would pull it off. The crossover did both worlds justice and provided us with many gags to take away with us. It does slow down in some places , but there are some nice easter eggs on both sides, to more than make up for it.I did prefer the Family Guy jokes over The Simpsons ones though probably because I watch Family Guy a lot more and I am used to there type of humor , although both shows pulled off some equally good laughs and there were times when I thought The Simpsons characters told the better joke in some scenes. There was a nice touch at the beginning of the episode when they were talking about how crossovers never work , how they don't feel natural, the expectation was very low from a viewer standpoint , but the show didn't fail to deliver one of the most memorable episodes ever. Each of the Griffins befriended a counterpart from The Simpsons. They each had their own unique jokes , partically Peter and Homer, who were the stand out pair in the episode as you would expect. Lots of crazy things happen , they throw insults back and forth at one another and even have one the best fights Family Guy has offered... which seemed to last forever. They even went into space before ultimately landing flat on their faces back on earth.
Here are a few of my favorite moments from the episode
The car wash scene is indescribable you have to really see it for yourself in order to get the full experience of what happened there. When Peter and Homer put on a show for the drive by customers. It certainly was a show I felt as if I was watching Grown Ups 2 again when the men were rubbing themselves against the windows of the cars and hitting one another with their wet sponges. It was a montage of soapy greatness for the two unsexy characters trying to act flirty and sexy, I was like Fat Tony , I despised it , it was extremely cringe worthy. The Simpsons "car wash" panned out like the Grown ups 2 "car wash scene" , although the image was slightly worse, which will probably stick with me for a while.
Who could forget the epic 10 minute fight scene which seemed to last a whole 9 minutes more than it should have. I liked it when they looked like Green Lantern and they that were fighting in the air , I thought that they did have so many great ideas jammed into one fight sequence which was really entertaining to watch. The different ways to try and kill one another was quite creative, although some may argue the fight scene was a little graphic with the eyeball sockets nearly getting pulled out and when they were almost near death in the canyon. The fight first started at The Simpsons home where it continued on a bus , the power plant , in a spaceship where we even had Roger from American Dad pop in for a visit and it even continued into the canyon. It was a brilliant fight sequence that was very spectacular , and also offered us some jokes throughout it.
I liked the scene when they were all eating at the table and Marge questions Brian's desire to sit at the table , he has to eat in the kitchen like a real dog much to Brian's dismay. He tries to befriend Santa's little helper , which doesn't turn out successful at first. I liked how Brian thought he was superior, even though he still drinks out of the toilet and acts like a normal dog. They started off on a rough patch , but soon became to like one another as the episode progressed which was nice to see.
I am pretty sure that Matt Groening was in the episode at one point sitting behind Joe and Bonnie , I am not sure if Seth Mcfarlene was shown in the episode , I know I didn't see him.If you did see him let me know in the comments. I was keeping my eyes glued to the screen trying to find him. I wonder what he would look like in Family Guy form.
Favorite Quotes
“I took Apu.”
“Oh, I was under the impression that you were a dog. … Have you ever drunk out of a toilet?
"Lets just agree to stay half an hour away from each other , with a pile of garbage between us"
"Eh guys have I got a lee-ky bum"
"Hey its not a rip off from duff , it may have been inspired by duff , but I like to think it goes in a different direction"
Summary
The Crossover was one the best crossovers I have seen and was a barrel of laughs. In a few weeks there will be a Simpsons - Futarama Crossover coming so I hope that will be as good as this was or maybe better.
As always , thank you for reading! Let me know in the comments what you thought of the episode!

You preferred the Family Guy jokes over the The Simpsons jokes? ´Nuff said.
ReplyDeleteYep I did , it is probably because I watch Family Guy more and am used to there type of jokes. I only watch The Simpsons occasionally.
ReplyDeleteYou should (if you haven't) watch classic Simpsons (seasons 1-9) it blows Family Guy away.
ReplyDeleteIs it true that Julie bowen made an apparence as her role on modern family as claire dunphy? And that we see fred flintstone as a judge? :)
ReplyDeleteYes to both. The Modern Family gag is part of the initial crossover that the Griffin's are watching on TV (Modern Family/All in the Family).
ReplyDeleteFred Flintstones appeared as a judge towards the end of the episode where Duff is suing the Griffin's and Pawtucket Pat for copying Duff Beer. He actually makes a great point about all the similarities between Simpsons/Fmily Guy which also tied back to an older Simpson's episode where Lisa points out in court that basically all of the Simpson characters are inspired by The Flintstones and (I want to say) Honeymooner's
I preferred the Family Guy gag's as well.
ReplyDeleteOk, thank you so much. :)))
ReplyDeletethis was an awesome episode...tried getting back into the simpsons but its changed too much from when i use to watch it, the sense of humor at least...family guy is on top for me as well...they both are good though so not downplaying either one
ReplyDeleteI haven't watched all seasons , particularly the early seasons , I am sort of a on off type person with it. I watch it when I can. I may just end up binge watching them next summer since I have 0 TV shows on during that period and have nothing to watch.
ReplyDeleteYes it is , I would explain what they were doing there but , @Morrigan_2575 has kindly told you about it :)
ReplyDeleteYou've got to love Fred Flintstone. I was pleasantly surprised when he showed up , wasn't expecting it.
ReplyDeleteI feel The Simpsons has dragged on a bit too much. The humor isn't the same as it used to be if anything some of the humor gets reused in weekly Simpsons episodes. They are still both funny animated show none the less.
ReplyDeleteThis episode sure deserve an award for the most disturbing scene. I hope I don't get any nightmares.
ReplyDeleteI haven't watched any simpsons episodes in a looong time. I saw your article and I must say I was intrigued.
Overall it was nice, however the huge gap between the simpsons type of and the family guys type of humor still left me with a weird feeling. And the fact that I'm not used to the family guy jokes at all didn't help. Add to the mix private jokes and references that obviously I couldn't always get.
It's funny though, even if the episode point out the similarities of the two shows, I couldn't find them more different.
And I agree with you on the simpsons, it has lost a little but hey, just like Bart had been beaten up by Nelson for more than twenty years, it's sure getting a bit old sometimes.
And my favourite is the "I took Apu".
What scene are you talking about that will give you nightmares? The car wash scene maybe because that was highly disturbing. I too haven't watched any Simpsons episodes in a long time , in fact yesterdays episode was the first time I have watched an episode live in years. It just seems to repetitive now with like you mentioned the whole Nelson beating up Bart. It has lost its effect. I hope Family Guy doesn't drag out for 26 seasons as the jokes on that show are starting to get a bit tiresome.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen The Simpsons or Family Guy in a while, but this episode... It's freacking epic!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, I loved it, I enjoyed it so much, especially the references to Bob Burgers, Cleveland Show and American Dad. And when Homer attacked Peter with the emmys... oh god, I lost my shit there... well I lost my shit several times actually
Ha , the episode was very funny indeed. I loved it also when Homer attacked Peter with the Emmys. Way to rub it in that The Simpsons has more Emmys than Family Guy. Lol. There were so many great moments in the episode. I also liked how Fred Flintstone even made and appearance during it.
ReplyDeleteYeah the car wash scene. It sure was something !
ReplyDeleteWell, can't really say for Family Guy but it's never good when a show drag out for too long. And it's even worse with shows working on jokes.
Honestly I was a bit taken aback by Meg self-consciouness and Peter who find nothing else to do other than dragged her down. I didn't find that funny at all. Sometimes it seems like they want you to laugh at the character rather than with the character.
Yeah Peter does always seem to drag her down , he says "shut up meg" so much as well. (Maybe not a lot in the episode but in the series). That is sort of the idea with Family Guy , they do want you to do both laugh at/laugh with the character. It is part of the shows strange humor.
ReplyDeleteShows should always end when they run out off new ideas , not repeat the same things over and over.
