The seventh season of Castle started exactly where the sixth season left off, with the image of the burning wreckage of Richard Castle’s car. It wasn’t a shock when Kate finally discovered that the man she was about to marry wasn’t in the car, thus beginning the search, no, the hunt, for Richard Castle.
It’s no surprise that Beckett does a complete 180, within the first minutes of “Driven,” from heartbroken fiancé to detective with a purpose. She doesn’t need to be told twice, to ditch her soaked out wedding dress. (It must have been so heavy!) When there’s a treat on the people she loves, she’s in no matter what, and if it were me, I’d get out of her way. Doesn’t take no for an answer, she HAS to do something. She’s driven; it’s one of the adjective that best describes her. Castle’s one of their own, an integral part of their family, and it’s up to Kate and the boys to find him. He’s alive, and he needs their help. The search seems promising when the FBI manages to remotely activate Castle’s phone, leading our trio to a scrap yard, where we witness the Escalade being crushed. How many fake Castle deaths can they throw at us?
After a flying squirrel jump on the perp, and beating the crap out of him, Kate isn’t getting the answers she wants, the answers she needs, because he’s afraid of someone, someone scarier than Beckett on a mission. That’s scary.
We are able to witness, once again, the evolution of the Gates/Beckett relationship. I was half expecting Gates to give Beckett the boot off the case, she’s emotional. It probably contradicts dozens of protocols to let a detective work on her fiancé’s kidnapping, but Gates, isn’t the stuck-up, carrier-driven women she used to be when they introduced her to us 3 years ago. Over the years, she has come to know Kate, even care for her and she knew that the detective would only continue her search off the record if she was taken off the case. The fact that she cares enough to understand that shows how much more a part of the gang she now is.
Everything seems to be going well-ish until evidence surfaces that puts everything they know into perspective, and divides the team. It begs one question. Was Castle in on it? Vincent “The Scar” Cardano makes his return on “Castle”, tying into the kidnapping and giving them a solid lead. He was paid by a third party to get rid of the SUV in the scrap yard.
When the surveillance footage incriminates Castle, it doesn’t take more than a couple of seconds for Esposito to come to the conclusion that Castle planned the whole thing. But, just because he wasn't under any duress on camera, doesn't mean they didn't threaten his family. As always, Ryan is on the softer side of things and doesn’t jump to the same conclusions. He gives people the benefit of the doubt, believes people are fundamentally good and stands behind his certitude that there must be an explanation, because come on, Espo, you’ve known the man for 7 years now. You were going to be part of his wedding party, just give him a chance. Kate receives the new like a ton of brick and tows with the idea that maybe; he was in over his head and planned the whole thing. It made me so mad that they would doubt him, especially Kate, even for a minute. After everything he’s done, everything he’s proven to her, she still doesn’t believe in him, in them. He stood by her side for 7 years, 7 years where she did her best to push him away, and he was there for her, always. How is it possible for her to believe that, on the verge of their wedding, he would run away from his life, away from her?
“Well, that’s ridiculous. Why on earth would he do such a thing?” - Martha
Exactly. Spot on, Martha. There has to be an explanation, an explanation we won’t be getting during this episode, but an explanation we’ll be getting nonetheless. Even IF Castle wanted out, faking your kidnapping seems a bit much. Come on, Kate’s scary, but faking all of this, just to get out of marrying her, it seems a little extreme. They have history of being framed for crimes they didn’t commit, she believed in him when he was being framed in the 3xk killings, what’s so different now?
The facts and the evidence are making her doubt, but her feelings are making her have faith. Beckett we know, she always follows her gut, her feelings, her intuition. When the leads stop cold, doubts or no doubts, Beckett still desperately searches for Castle.
Kate Beckett had a clean window pane, now that her mother’s murder was solved. But that window didn’t stay clear for very long. For two months she searches for everything, anything that could lead her to Castle, all in vain, until one day, the man she loves is spotted by a ship, drifting helplessly, severely dehydrated, but alive, in the middle of the Atlantic. It’s the best news she’s heard in a while, because she never thought she’d see him again. Everything isn’t rainbows and unicorns just yet, because he still hasn’t woken up yet, hasn’t explained, hasn’t told her what she desperately wants to hear. That he didn’t choose this, that he would choose her, always.
The dingy he was found in, leads Beckett, Ryan and Esposito to a trailer house, where they discover where Castle has been camping, hiding. It makes absolutely no sense that he would be camping.(And I was thinking that before the whole, Tropical Storm explanation) But finding the tent, his things just laying there, it’s the last straw for Kate, the drop that makes the cup overflow. She stops believing in him. He chose to stay hidden, he didn’t want to be found. Rick deliberately left and she wants to know why.
“I mean, tell me what happened.” – Kate
But he doesn’t remember. Rick wakes up, asking for Kate, but they’re further apart than we’ve ever seen them. He doesn’t understand, thinking he had just gotten into the car crash, so it seems, like everyone else, we will have to wait to get an explanation on his whereabouts. She's mad, she's hurt, and at this point, there is really nothing he can do or say to make it better, but hugs do seem to help.
They'll find their way back, they always do.
“Driven” was fairly good, and I like the direction they’re taking, but I still think it could have been better. Maybe I was hoping Castle would be the lead on this one, I really don’t know. We already know Kate Beckett is a badass; I’m still waiting for Rick Castle to kick some butt. The season premier was tense and mysterious and it actually managed to surprise me. Only, there was a lot less Castle in Castle than I expected. Don’t get me wrong I love the rest of the cast, but Castle is the most under used character, ever. I just hope the new, incredibly confusing, mythology will give him an actual storyline, it actually looks promising. I’m kind of digging the amnesia storyline here, kind of a Hangover/Castle crossover, where we’re going to be retracing his steps until the whole story is uncovered.
Side note: I would have loved to see Kate Beckett pull out her gun on the night janitor for moving Castle’s chair!
Because I’m very confused, let’s have our own murder board here and put down everything we know about Castle's two month absence. I still don't know if Castle is completly in the dark on this one or if he's hiding something for the greater good. Feel free to add anything I forgot in the comments!
-Castle’s run off the road by a black SUV.
-His car is dumped a ditch and his limp (maybe drugged or concussed) body is dragged out of the car by two people.
-Vinny "The Scar" is asked to dispose of the black SUV.
-Richard Castle pays for for the demolition, with the money meant for his honeymoon.
-Castle disappears for two months.
-During that time he contracted Dengue Fever, a tropical disease.
-He was shot weeks ago.
-The boat he was found on had bullet holes.
-He is found in a boat, after drifting for 4-5 days
-There was a key stamped “38”sown in the lining of his jeans.
-Someone faked being Henry Jenkins to lead Espo, Ryan and Beckett to Castle's tent.
Any speculations?
I found this new mythology rather lame.
ReplyDeleteI personally loved the episode. The whole episode puts their relationship under a whole different light now! Can't wait till all the missing links are revealed over the course of season.Stana nailed this episode.Every expression of hers-the fear,desperation,anger,heartbreak,frustration,despair-she portrayed it pitch-perfect.She's an amazing actress,i can watch castle without castle being present if she's in it!
ReplyDeleteI was disappointed with Kate ever believing that Castle faked his own death. Even if she thought he would do that to her, she had to know he would never do that to Alexis. Even after he is found sunburned and dehydrated 80 miles from shore with a healed bullet graze on his side and bullet holes in the dinghy, she accepts that he did this himself. Ridiculous. The timeline from his rescue until he was released was medically wrong. You don't recover from severe dehydration overnight. His severe sunburn also disappeared overnight without any signs of peeling skin. He would have been there with Kate. I expected more from the Castle writing staff than that.
ReplyDeleteI just can't understand why everyone stopped believe in Castle. Why on earth should he fake his on kidnapping just to get out of a relationship? And leaving his mother and, most important, his daughter behind? That makes absolutely no sense and I was really mad (especially at Espo! and Kate) that they really believed this bullshit.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a big fan of amnesia as a plot device. So, please, don't let this last very long! I'm with Nina as well - why the really fast disbelief. Maybe Espo - him I can forgive for being quick to jump to conclusions as he always seems to believe the worst, but Ryan giving in and even Kate seeming so in doubt of Castle's love for her just seemed so out of character.
ReplyDeletenew mythology: I wouldn't say lame now, but the writers's definitely doesn't have a promising track record and when they feel the need to state in advance that the villain has unlimited resources - to me it means be prepared to the biggest jumping of the sharks you ever seen.
ReplyDeleteLiked: Beckett's face when a coffe mug appears and then when she realised it's just Esposito. Castle's reactions when he tried to came to terms what happened and when he tried to reason why he couldn't camp there.
Instant negative side: they have been living together for two years, Beckett is a capital letter FAN of his books (plus his muse), and they have never ever talked about his works - typical Marlowian characterization. His writing and his thoughts, conflicts with it should have been equally important everyday topics between them at home, but obviously it will be a big surprise, just because the writers only now realised that the show's title is "Castle".
Most hated part: Kate "Fingerbroker" Beckett. "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent" - the last thing I wished to see was an incompetent detective Beckett. It's not badass, it's wrong. There are TV show characters where it works, but if I want to watch Jack Bauer, I watch 24, not Castle.
I know that we will all find out what happened -
ReplyDeleteBut His Friends AND Kate questioning his kidnapping/disappearance is So WRONG ! They all KNOW how Castle feels. Personally if I was Castle - Martha or Alexis I'd be FURIOUS at them for even a moms tarty doubt !
* the tent is ALL wrong ..... Living in a tent on the beach for several weeks - there's no way that tent would look that pristene.....
*
I loved it.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest I hated season 6 finale and I considered it one if not THE worst ep ever.
And I must admit that after six years it's kind of hard to keep the audience interested in you.
So seeing this episode was for me was a new found faith in the show.
I thought they jumped the shark on the finale but they only strayed away a bit.
I hope they get this mythology great because this show never had a normal A story B story C story layers in it. It was usually an A story with a side note B story (Caskett relationship) and the C story always came as an A story (if you get my drift...)
Here is for a great season to top all seasons before her.
So you're still waiting for Castle to "kick some butt?" I'll admit he's not badass as Beckett, but maybe you had your eyes closed during "Knockdown" or your ears plugged during "Target?"
ReplyDeleteGosh I have no clue where this is going, but I liked it a lot and will continue with everyone else to figure it out. I keep coming back to the Dengue Fever, so lost here
ReplyDeleteI didn´t, I still have no idea what the mythology is, I´m intrigued, so...goal achieved!
ReplyDeleteI don´t think this is amnesia, my take is that he was drugged with something that makes you lose the notion of time and space! I mean, he didn´t forget anyone or anything, he just doesn´t know where he was and that time had gone by...
ReplyDeleteShe's always great, yes ;)
ReplyDeleteBut plot-wise, Castle isn't Castle, without Castle. Ouff lthat was a lot of Castles!
I know, it's like they saw some evidence, and suddenly, everything they know about Castle flies out the window! I hadn't even thought about his mother or Alexis. Shame on them (and on me)
ReplyDeleteHe did manage to recover pretty quickly, I'll give you that, but is the timeline really one day later?
Esposito was the worse, but he's always been ubber protective of Kate, maybe that was where it was coming from. I don't know, but I was mad too! :P
ReplyDeleteI feel like he was on autopilot the whole time. Or drunk out of his mind for 2 months, but yeah, it's not amnesia as much as a blackout. A very big blackout, most probably drug induced.
ReplyDeleteBut maybe he isn't as much in the dark as he led on, I don't think he planned the kidnapping, doesn't mean he doesn't remember anything about his two months. He could be remembering bits and pieces, everything out of context and ashamed of what they made him do. But then again, I just don't think he'd keep it from Kate.
Sorry for my rambling!
Yeah, I mean, he can protect her but assuming that her financé (who should be her husband to this point, actually) ran off just because he wanted to break up with her or whatever, will definitely not help her. I actually think he just made it worse because she got doubts, which she shouldn't get at this point anymore.
ReplyDeleteIt seemed like one day with my re-watch of the episode. Even if it was two or three, that's still too short a time to rehydrate him and get his electrolytes rebalanced or just for his sunburn to subside. My husband was in ICU 4 days because of severe dehydration, and he wasn't found unconscious after 4 or 5 days in a dinghy. All summer I was waiting for a great reunion scene, and we didn't get anything close to that. Very disappointed.
ReplyDeletecastle probably paid fake jenkins, i really don't rust castle right now
ReplyDeletetrust
ReplyDeleteI got hooked coz of her.Nathan does nothing for me sadly. He's the reason i couldn't watch firefly!!
ReplyDeleteI liked rust better. :)
ReplyDeleteI might be drugs or it may be selective amnesia or Castle remembers everything and protecting the ones he loves. Only thing I know I love the new mythology so far. The premiere set it up nicely.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what to make of any of this, as a fan of Castle I'm really intrigued as to where all of this is going, and I'm happy that at the end Beckett did regain her senses somewhat, I get that they are cops, but with all the bad guys they've put away how could they even remotely doubt Castle, he'd just walk away from his mom and daughter, and even the woman he'd chased for six years, I didn't like they didn't have faith in the man, I'm just anxiously waiting on answers!!!
ReplyDeleteMan I think they went way too far. Castle's always been a bit unrealistic, it's what makes it fun, but that was a lot more soap opera than procedural. Amnesia? Really?
ReplyDeleteTho I can't say I'm not intrigued, I really wish they'd taken this into a different direction. I don't know exactly who wrote this episode, but I'm not really a fan of his/her style. A lot of things were overlooked to make sure the viewer's had no clue of the timeline until Beckett told Castle two months had passed. The result was confusing and, even though it did preserve the element of surprise, annoying. In my personal opinion, the shock effect could've been sacrificed. Something else I did not like was the way Martha and Alexis were completely sidelined even though Castle had apparently disappeared for two months, I think their reactions to that should've been shown.
Stana killed it, as usual, her portrayal of Beckett couldn't have been any more spot on. I heard a lot of criticism on Beckett's attitude in the ep, accusing her of turning against Castle too quickly, but honestly I think her reaction was quite accurate. She spent two months without seeing or hearing from the guy, searching for him but unsure if she was ever gonna see hiim again. After those two months of having Castle only in her own memory, she lost touch with who Castle really was, she could no longer tell apart what had truly happened to what she imagined had happened. She was confused, and, once presented with some incredibly convincing evidence (photos,DNA samples, prints, even a witness), she obviously didn't know what to believe anymore. That was the one thing I think both the writers and the stunning Stana Katic captured perfectly.
As for Castle's mystery...I bet his secret CIA dad's got something to do with it.
I Was disappointed with this episode. Don't by the amnesia thing. The lack of Martha & Alexis presence, emotion and wanting to know what happened, since they always want to know everything ( very out of character). Castle doing this just not to get married? He could have let Becket stayed married to that bum from College. SMH
ReplyDeleteI loved your "Violence" quote, completely agree with that. Who's this from? Or am I completely clueless for not knowing?
ReplyDeleteThe book, your reffering to is Tropical Storm, right? I think it was a book he started pre-Beckett and Nikki Heat and thought was awful, and stopped writing. Why would you assume Beckett should know about it? Or am I missing something?
Like you pointed out, I also hate that the villans in this show are always so powerful, that way they can to just about anything and get away with it.
Liked the coffee scene, but I while watching it, I was like "Why? Why Espo?"
Haha, the tent WAS all wrong and living in a tent like this for two months is wrong. There was no fire, no water, it really didn't seem like aybody was living there!
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure they threatened his family and friends, it's the only thing that would "make sense"
But during these episodes he was still either following Kate, or his father's lead. What I meant was I was hoping he'd be on his own a bit so we'd be able to see what he can do without them!
ReplyDeleteBut yeah, he was great in those episodes.
Haha, I'm not sure I'm getting your A/B/C story line drift here.
ReplyDeleteBut cheers to a great season!
Why??
ReplyDeleteI read on another article someone mentionned Pi kidnapping Castle to explain the fever, and I just loved it, so I'm sticking with that theory until proven wrong! ;)
ReplyDeleteYou and I are in the same bought here! Anxiously awaiting!
ReplyDeleteNot defending anyone here, but the viewers could know how much time had past by the newspaper clippings Beckett was hanging on her window.
ReplyDeleteYes, Martha and Alexis were severly under used in this episode and seemed way too keen to sweep everything under the rug.
You think his dad is one of the good guys or one of the bad guys?
Martha and Alexis were definatley missed duing this episode. You think Castle's in on it?
ReplyDeleteThey operate in tv time, but they could have at least kept his face burnt for continuity's sake.
ReplyDeleteYes, no great reunion was a bummer, but I felt how they handled it was true to the characters and the storyline. Don't you?
I sure hope it's resolved quickly, I had intended to tell you how much, I enjoyed reading your review, very well done, unfortunately I just jumped right in on my venting, keep up the great work, I hope we get answers to this insanity soon:)
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeletethe violence quote is one of the most quoted part of Isaac Asimov's book, the first part of the Foundation trilogy. It's a scifi classic, at least as much as his I, the Robot book.
Regarding Tropical Storm: I got that it was an early and very bad book and Beckett not necessarily needed to know about. On the other hand - and this is something what reflexes this whole newly found mystery in Castle's life - they were together since S3. (Not my opinion, that's how Marlowe described their relationship.) There were a lot of occasions even before Always when we saw them going out together. After Always it should be even more frequent, in S6 Beckett practically lived with him.
I think that it's not a far fetched assumption that they TALKED. About each other, about their life before each other, about things what they did or saw and suddenly came into their mind reading a news in the paper, everything. Castle's books saved her life before, she was a huge fan - and she never asked Castle about his work? That TS was a crap, it isn't an explanation - Castle was not shy to self-deprecate himself, it's not a shameful thing that he didn't like some of his works. (Right in the pilot he wondered why did the killer copied his bad ones.)
Anything important what will pop up after six years between them as a big surprise, it's bad. That was one of the reasons I disliked Beckett's marriage plot (beside showing her as an idiot) - Castle has always been extremely excited to learn about her "wild phase" and a drunk trip to Vegas has never been even mentioned? These are two grown ups who can laugh about their young foolishness and both of them like to shock the other one.
This was a better episde than i expected I really like the way the story is headed and they definetly keept me interested as to what will happen next. The only problem I had was that alot of the caracters didnt belive Castle was telling the truth about not rememberin his last 2 months, that was kinda lame and especially Beckett should not doubt him in my opinion
ReplyDeleteI think you weren´t paying much attention while watching...I knew 2 months had passed before Beckett told Castle, it was well shown while she was on the phone looking at folds and folds, one of them even had "six weeks" written! And this surely isn´t amnesia (he just has no idea of time, but knows everything else about his life)!
ReplyDeleteSo, no, I don´t think they went too far...
Gotta say I didn't even try to read the newspaper clippings, but I still feel a lot of things were suppressed in order to keep the episode fast. They shortened those two months into twenty minutes, and because of that we weren't shown a lot of things I wish we'd been able to see, including Martha and Alexis' reactions to all this. Now, this is absolutely a matter of taste here. I didn't think the fast-paced style the episode was written in really was the best way to go, I feel those two months Castle were gone in deserved their own full episode to be explored, not just 20 minutes. Personally, I think it would've been a more interesting approach.
ReplyDeleteAs for the amnesia...there's many types of amnesia. Not all of them include losing all memories. Some types of amnesia account for memory loss of only a shortened period of time. What Castle has seems to be Dissociative Amnesia, in which the victim of something psychologically traumatic can't recall said traumatic events, but I'm not sure that's the direction they're actually heading it. Still, if there's memory loss involved,it's amnesia all the same.
Maybe. The only thing Castle would hide from Becket is his Father. All three of them would, they've done it before. It's just a thought. He would run away for him.
ReplyDeleteAmnesia is like, a daytime soap opera staple. It's lame and overused. There is nothing original here, nothing that hasn't been done before.
ReplyDeleteI still think it´s a case of some drug(s), not amnesia...at least that´s how I´d like it to be!
ReplyDeleteIs there realy something left that isnt overused and original?
ReplyDeleteCastle would pull something off like this for only one thing he has kept her from her before. His Father. Yes, Martha & Alexis would cover for him too. Just a theory.
ReplyDeleteLisbon and Patrick Jane from The Mentalist saved him and Jane hypnotized him to find out what happened, in the mean time Castle's father thought he was in trouble so he "saved" him bum not knowing Castle is still hypnotized so he went around not knowing what he is doing and ended up not remembering anything.
ReplyDelete
